LoER Terrain Contest: Round 15: The Trapdoor! Contest results Pg 9 @ 2015/06/29 22:02:23

Post by: inmygravenimage

Welcome to the 15th round of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Competition.
"The Trapdoor"

Welcome, one and all, to the 15th round of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain contest.

For those who have not taken part before, this is a competition about terrain building (as you may have gathered from the title), but it is not strictly limited to pure terrain, dioramas that can be used as table top terrain are allowed (see rules below). To get a feel for how these competitions run and what to expect you may wish look at the 14 previous rounds, linked below.

Each round has a “theme” or other defining attribute(s) that must in some way be applied to the your terrain project, to compete with other modellers for that most prestigious of prizes, membership into The League of Extraordinary Riveters [LoER].

The competition is open to everyone registered on Dakka Dakka, all are welcome to enter regardless of ability, etc.

The main aim of these competitions is to encourage gamers and model-makers alike to go that extra mile when building terrain that can be used for playing your preferred tabletop wargame (or similar pastime - for example, a board game playing piece would be acceptable). Those taking part can expect to receive ideas, inspiration, encouragement and feedback from each other, and at the end each of the participants is "rewarded" with a new piece of terrain for their own use (that's the thing you just built).

The winner of each round hosts the next round, and the cycle continues.
The theme, limitations, rules, judging and prizes are all the responsibility of the host, although he or she can get help from others for some of those things...

For those who are returning once again to compete a most sincere and heartfelt welcome back!

Past Competitions.

Contest #1 "Lids" (dsteingass)
Contest #2 "Cookie Package” (Viktor Von Doom)
Contest #3 "Fightin' Pit!" (MrMerlin)
Contest #4 "For the title of Master Shrubber" (Meade)
Contest #5 "Vehicles!" (Bruticus)
Contest #6 "We're Not Worthy!" (Meade)
Contest #7 "Fire at Will" ( hk1x1)
Contest #8 "All are welcome" (Camkierhi)
Contest #9 “Elementary" (Littletower)
Contest #10 "The Throne" (Camkierhi)
Contest #11 "On The Road" (Red Harvest)
Contest #12 "Wall me up, fence me in " (monkeytroll)
Contest #13 "What went wrong?" (OneManNoodles)
Contest #14 "Making something extraordinary from the ordinary" (Dr H)
... And now onwards to the current competition.

This round's theme is "The Trapdoor".
I want you to interpret this in any way you see fit, but I will share with you the inspiration for this:

A classic British kids tv show from my youth, with a tremendously catchy theme tune, your task for this round should be to somehow create a piece that, in some way, incorporates a trapdoor.

You can be in any scale or any system you like. Ideally, your first WIP photo should what you bits and pieces you are starting with, but I'm aware these things evolve organically. Also, it's about being innovative with what you have lying about or can scavenge - but using a kit part for a totally different purpose, or on a different scale, will also be rewarded.

I like to see how people build their models, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this. So please post as many WIP shots as you can. This can achieve more than just keeping me happy (and you want to do that anyway ): Regular posts in this thread will keep it in the public eye and will allow more people to find this contest. Also, if you post WIP shots, others can give you feedback and ideas before it's too late to change it (this will only help you as a participant and we all learn something new).

However, FINAL pictures should not be shown here. This is important for motivation, we are all our own worst critics, and seeing someone's brilliant work should not put us off but it can. I can't stop you posting in your own threads, but please not in here. PM me with the pictures / links instead when they are ready.

One last note on photographs. Please put as much effort into taking photos of your finished model as you have building it. Poorly lit, out-of-focus, blurred, and low resolution photos can harm your chances in any competition. Remember, If I can't see it in the photo, I can't judge it. Only you can hold the model in your hands and turn it around to see everything. Make sure everything you want me to see is in the photos. Thank you.

Rules:.
1: Talk about fight club the Competition. Tell everyone. Post it in your blogs. Add the banner to your signature.
HTML code for the banner.....
{url=http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/654377.page#7941687]{img]http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/11/8/429237_md-.jpg{/img]{/url]
change all the "{" to "["
It should look and work like this one:

2: Must be completed by the deadline. And when I say "must", I mean "about". There is a fair amount of leeway given in these contests but assume there will be no extensions and we'll cross any problems when it arises.
The Deadline is 10 weeks which makes it midnight BST 12th September
Which I believe is 19:00 EST or 16:00 PST
But anything on that night though to midday will be accepted so that those of you living in the past can keep going until bed time.

3: Your piece should be scratch-built or heavily converted. Model kit parts can be used, especially if used in an unusual way, but you will get more points for something you sculpt yourself, so keep that in mind. Unconventional parts are highly recommended in addition to those you will be using as part of this competition.

4: Your model should be a piece of terrain or a diorama that can be used for gaming purposes. It cannot be a playable model in itself (a crashed tank must stay crashed), but removable models (people) are fine.

5: Any scale, any setting and any gaming system are welcome. A nice mixture of fantasy, sci-fi, historical, or modern will make this contest all the more interesting. If you don't play a game, that's fine too; just make a display piece, but keep rule 4 in mind.

6: The women are right, size doesn't matter. You can make as small or as large a model as you want. Bear in mind the time-scale and don't bite off more than you can chew. We've all made that mistake!

7: Final Entry: Six or more photos of your final entry, showing top, front, both sides, back and all the important parts - not to be posted in this thread. PM me with links to your galleries, albums, etc. As I said above, please take the time to take the best photos that you can.
Together with your photos, I would like a statement of the items (a photo would be ideal) that you used. This is not a must, but would be helpful.

Feel free to include some fluff or an explanation of the model/setting to allow the rest of us to fully appreciate your work.

8: AMBITION: Push yourself. Try something new! Always wanted to use leds? Go for it! Fancied weathering powders? Here's your chance! I'll be looking at your galleries for previous work, entries etc. I want everyone to feel that their best has a fair shot at this.

9: Not so much a rule, but it wouldn't be the League of Extraordinary Riveters if there are no rivets. This also means similar small details are highly valued (rivets are the best example of this level of detailing).

10: Sprue. Find a use for the often discarded wonder material and bonus points will be yours.

11. THE RULE OF COOL trumps all.

If you are unsure of anything just ask away.

Judging:
Modelling: 45 points total.
(10 points) Skill and Techniques - No mould lines, gaps or rough edges (that are not meant to be rough). Show that you know the difference between a hobby knife and a spatula.
(5 points) Originality - You could have built anything, what did you choose?
(10 points) Materials - Choice of Ordinary items (ease of use / ambition / originality). Scratch-building Vs. recycled materials Vs. kit parts.
(5 points) Little details - Rivets and other small details that add realism to the piece.
(5 points) The wonder material - Use of Sprue in is own right not just as a hidden support structure. Good, new and original use of sprue.
(10 points) Design - How well was the idea translated to the model? Layout of the piece; artistically and for playability. Well thought out design for the setting. Does the build fit the theme?

Painting: 40 points total.
(10 points) Between the lines - Crisp and clean paintwork. No slips or brushstrokes. Good
(5 points) Simple but effective - Use of basic techniques (washes, dry-brushing, layering etc.) to a high level. coverage of both the basecoat and final layers.
(10 points) Skill and Techniques - Use of advanced painting techniques such as blending, shading, OSL, weathering, edge highlighting, freehand, etc... And their execution.
(5 points) Thinking outside the box - Use of unusual methods to produce good results. Including the use of printed materials, or unusual media (iridescent paint, etc.).
(10points ) Final product - How does the piece look overall in all its glory.

Bonuses: 15 points total.

(10 points) Coolness: Rule of Cool is always in effect.
(5 points) Ambition: How far have you pushed yourself as a modeller and painter? Is this your usual standard, or have you tried new techniques, processes - or just played it safe?

100 points total.

Yes, there is more emphasis on modelling than painting. And Ambition points are there becuase I want to reward folk who go the extra mile on this.

Prizes:
1st Prize.
Membership to the League of Extraordinary Riveters as top prize. You will be allowed to fly the League's banner and be recognised as a modeller devoted to Rivets.
Also a commission piece of terrain to your specification, made by me, of a medium size (CD sized base ish) plus an assortment of bitz.

2nd Prize.
A small piece of terrain (objective-sized-ish) for the system of your choice. Probably some bitz, too.

3rd Prize
Just a warm glow inside to encourage you to come back next time.

People's choice: As voted for by your fellow Dakkanauts.
More warm feelings inside and the bragging rights that your peers love your work.

Honorary mention: The person that didn't get into the top 3 but received the most votes. Assuming this is different from the People's choice.

And...
Anyone who completes a model for this competition will receive a full, detailed critique of your piece, written by me. This will highlight the good points and the parts I feel need work. I will give advice as to how I would improve the model and suggestions for alternatives. This is purely my opinions and is part of how I judge the pieces. It can be posted in this thread for all to see and learn from, or by PM if you want to see it first.

Ideas are flowing. I have about 10 diorama ideas already each of which I reaaaaally want to do at some point, but think I have come up with a terrain idea. I'm going to let it brew, do some sketches and come back with a target, a plan (and a realistic timetable) soon.

*ponders* - "How big are spaceships????"

Oh right!!!!! Stormtalon?

I meant a real spaceship, or even a Hulk. I am about to take delivery of a 4th ed Space Hulk and I am thinking of building a room for it with a TrapDoor. Was thinking of a 40K/SciFi twist on the dungeon room from the claymation show. Ended up doing a literal 40K concersion of the original and then felt annoyed at myself for not being more creative. Then thought about when you might get that sort of room in a SciFi theme and remembered my Space Hulk purchase and figured you wouldn't want to open THAT trap door, there's definitely something down there!!

Could anyone shed some light on the trap door idea;

I get what a trap door is, but does it have to be a trapdoor as such? or just revolve around the idea; AKA - being lured into something, or being caught out unawares. Would they count?

Haha, great (or twisted) minds think alike. I was thinking of making some wooden gallows. I had a lot of wood gathered in the past to do so, but ended up using several of my splints to light candles.

Well, the idea if the gallows came through deduction...where would a trapdoor happen to be found...
I am still thinking this over as my wife told me to do something involving humor...and a noose seldom has something to do with cracking a smile...

You could have a guardsman, sat on the floor under the trapdoor, noose around his neck, loose rope (as in too long for the height of the drop), and a gang of Orks standing around scratching their head as to why it didn't work?

Good theme, Graven. Love Trapdoor.

I shall be watching from the sidelines this round, I have many other things to be getting on with and I'd like to be able to make suggestions during the contest and not after the fat lady has packed up and gone home for dinner, for a change.

Or you could have the "unlucky" person so large/fat/heavy that they have pulled the gallows over or snapped the pole (as that is funnier than the rope snapping).

A Space Hulk store room with false floor allowing me to place lots of Tyranid eggs under the floor seen through mesh floor panels and escape through an open trap door! Mwah-ha-ha! There are lots more musings in my Terrain blog (see signature strip for link) if anyone wants to be bored for a few minutes

So if I managed to get started and make headway... Here's a terrible sketch of what I wanna do. I guess what the doodle doesn't mention is that the lower 2x2' board will theoretically sit flush upon the first one in the center of the page. If you open the wee trapdoors you'll be able to see whatever is underneath the door on the second level. Although, for game purposes, as soon as the doors are opened and players are at the second level, the top would be detached and floated off in space as a separate 'floor'.

I think if I can get started... I can probably get it done, but I've gotta maintain enthusiasm through a house move and then through a newborn =/ Those will sometimes give you more time than you'd expect but... yeah very possibly the drawing will be all I get done, but I'm hopeful I can get dug in because once it's rolling I should make fair progress.

Congratulations on the newborn. They are awesome in so many ways, especially their crack ability to steal sleep from you but make you smile moments after doing so by doing something cute!! They also eat their parents' time like rabbits eat carrots I know from where you speak, if you get time it would be cool to see your project come to fruition though.

Well it's one thing I noticed when my daughter (now 3, a whole other bag of tricks..) was that age... is that I was constantly exhausted but I found I had a lot of idle time that I didn't expect to have. Now with both of them... probably not as much. And she's still not here yet... but the due date is not but a week or two different from the week we'll get to move lol.. we have bad timing

I think while we have the box truck to move our stuff I'm gonna grab one of those 8x4' sheets of insulation foam so I have plenty of raw materials for future projects.

Also, pretty much everything Cam does is cool so I'd be interested too

I think I am just going to go for a small building. I feel like the last two contests showed that I am bad at delivering and I cannot go outside of my means.

However, I /think/ if I'm inspired enough I can knock out a small project build wise in a day or two. I'm unsure if I am going to enter because that makes me feel shoddy when I don't deliver but, I feel like I deserve a piece of terrain to keep me occupied until I get my first place.

Anyways, I don't suppose any of you are Winter World, Metro 2033, or Fallout fans eh?

Considering I sell sculpts of Fallout-inspired pieces, you could say so.

As for the vault entrance; The definition of a trapdoor that I read said that it is a hatch that is flush to the surface of a floor or ceiling. Your vault entrance could be defined as a hatch, so put it on the ground (as seen in the trailer for Fallout 4) and it could be a trapdoor.

Or, have that in a cliff-face and have a "secret" trapdoor on top of the cliff.

Guuuuuyyysss. I was being sarcastic. (Love all the Fallout stuff on these forums. ) So, I am currently trying to come up with some acronyms for my piece and I think I will be pushing myself by trying out winter for the first time.

Edit: Got two now after brainstorming all day, and I am just going to leave them as hints. Northern American Transit, Rail, and Energy also known as NATRAE, and ATLAS Targeting and Defense.

I may be late to join this one, but I have balls and I have a plan

They are float balls for toilet flushes, I found them in a UK store called Wilko's (used to be called Wilkinson's) for the earth-shattering price of £0.99 each, they seem to be made from acrylic, and I thought what the hell, they'd make awesome gas or fluid containers for an industrial terrain setting. The trap door will be for a ladder to reach a walkway on the top and maybe inspection hatches as well, trapdoors everywhere.

Each ball is 120mm diameter so they are not exactly small, ATM my idea is to make a base with the two balls side-by-side with a connecting block in-between and buttresses to cradle the balls, which will give me some where to add some details. Also the buttresses will serve as supports for a some sort of platform or walkway some 75% up or on the top. I'll have to cover or remove the manufacturers marks and figure a way of making a base that they will sit comfortably and safely on, in this case I'd like my balls to stick.

As far as painting, ground: concrete, Balls: blue, buttresses: Beige, metalwork: rusty.

OMN.

Just two balls, Noodles? They are red though. Better red ones than, oh, say blue ones

Nifty ideas here.

Bear in mind that tanks tend to have escape hatches in the floor. A trap door of sorts, no?

The balls are approximately grapefruit size, each is a sphere of 110mm with a 120mm diameter rim running around them, with a screw on attachment point at the base.

The rim was a bit rough, mold lines, so I've had to clean that up a bit.

Yes only two, I figured I might get funny looks carrying around 3 or 4, plus as it is the base for this little construction is going to be around A4 size.

@ Red harvest: That's a good Idea, I hadn't thought of putting a hatch near the bottom.

Great work Cam

I'm considering breaking down and making something out of these project bricks

They're kind of a large scale for construction materials compared to 28mm models, though they *did* make the pyramids and similar out of pretty enormous blocks...

Seems like a decent start to generic dungeon walls, something to get started with before trying the likely harder natural stone I wanted to work with.

Move, plus new baby.. means more time crunch than usual. In the next couple of weeks I hope to fill out my hobby workspace with the furniture, tools, and supplies that are currently packed away.. then I'll try to build something

Man made (really big) brick/stone structures that is. Underground of course, or they wouldn't be dungeons.. Bah, rambling. Anyway, I'm trying to decide on 2 or 3 bricks high. The first is a little short, but gives you a bit of that 2.5D view angle/photo opportunity. The other option for 3 bricks is almost guaranteed to fit any regular 28mm type heroes, and even some pretty large monsters, though it does seem like space efficiency is important when building underground what with all of the digging and structural integrity stuff. From the five shots below, what do you guys think? 2 high or 3 high? Also I'll probably just cut things off to make flush door openings , rather than stacking them to the side like that. Trapdoor to come later once I've figured out how I want to build my buildings.
Spoiler:

As you say, Grim', 2 high would be good for gaming. Whereas 3 high is better for realism / dioramas.

And it depends on what you plan to do with it.
2 high won't let you add much to the walls, as it's a bit low for wall hangings (be they pictures, tapestries, or people manacled to the walls... "They only hung me the right way up yesterday...").

You could do the inner walls 2 high, and then the perimeter walls 3 high. Or do the corridors (which are narrow to get hands in) 2 high, and the rooms 3 high (to give you space to add decoration).

What are the bricks made out of?

I'm pretty sure good old 'gets melted by more things than you'd think, believe me we've looked into it' styrofoam, with some kind of paint on it. I reckon I'll be airbrushing the pieces as airbrush+terrain=win, so no worries about melting it. Costs 10-15 bucks for 300 of them, gonna put a few pieces together and consider the cost at that point. Easier to game with and less expensive in cost, 2H has it's merits. But I dunno... I like my terrain to look good and so 3H has a strong stance as well.

I think they'd be good for people doing the whole 2.5D stuff too, just a single row high to denote your walls.

The tapestries/prisoners thing really makes me lean towards 3 high

@ Vik, That is looking fantastic bud, amazing start.

@ Grim, I would go 3 high, that way you add details, like Doc said, also if you later add furniture yor wardrobes will look funny sticking up above the walls if they are too low.

@ DM Fantastic, I was getting worried, but you got going, and thats it you will have it done by Monday now....

Bah. My inspiration well has dried up. The tiny baby has become more maintenance-heavy and I keep vacillating between 2.5d and 3d dungeon scenery. I'm not necessarily giving up, but I'm less confident I'll get anything done. Since the whole point of these is to at least somewhat push yourself to new modeling heights, bashing out something junky just to 'get done' seems kind of pointless

Grim, you could always try and get as much done as possible, and then if you have a few in backlog to make a project of it like I am doing? Sure you won't be judged but, at least you get some sick works done.

Good to see some things happening.

To anyone just finding this, or thinking that there is no enough time to complete something; it doesn't have to be a large building, you can make a small diorama, or objective marker.

It only has to include a trapdoor (and fit the other criteria in the OP). You could do a piece of ground, a trapdoor and someone crawling away from some tentacles that are clearly going to drag him/her back into the trapdoor.

You can still put a great deal of "story" into a small base.
And you could always extend it, or fit it into a larger piece of terrain later.

I'll be disappointed if someone doesn't have tentacles coming out of a trapdoor. Where's Monkeytroll when you need him, He'd have tentacles.

Aww crap. I was gonna bow out and then Dr. H had to complain about a distinct lack of tentacles coming out of the current crop of trap doors...

I guess don't count me out just yet, if you guys don't think I'll be insulting the spirit of the competition by bashing something relatively quick and dirty out within the limited remaining time, I won't give up till the last day

I am going to post a wip real soon, doing a march with my cousin this weekend but, no reason not to get the basework done.

I need to figure out how to suspend cork with wires somehow to make it look like the cliff is eroding and waste a ton of time with plants. I'm super bummed I can't really convey what I wanted to though, as I am lacking soft snow flakes. I guess I could find some tutorial on bicarbonate or baking soda... then cover that later with the real deal? I'm trying to make slush. I have realistic water but, as I said no flock.

The white foam will be cliffs eventually, the cork is the ground. I know cork is usually used for rocks but, I'm going to end up covering it in soil, so I am using this to build flat surfaces/height and depth. Furthermore, overhangs and erosion as you would see in a remote mountainous area. I'm having a point of contention, as I am thinking of putting a canopy over this coming from the sides. But it still has to be playable. I am trying to go for the look that the piece ends at the edge of the base but, with it still looking like it belongs on a board.

I still have to add the small power station with the vault door, vents, fauna, vines, erosion, sand, and a metro tunnel at the end of the road. Plus a magnet for the removable figure that is going on the road. I want this piece to be like where I live but, even higher in elevation then I am here. IE: It is summer/fall and the leaves are still on the trees but, slush and snow happens in the night.

I am going to be doing some AoS terrain later though, maybe a vignette showing the reforging process.

Edit; I greenstuffed some new arms on the figure of this piece.

Spoiler:

Ewh, auto append. Not much to post but, I'm trying out the eroding cliffs, I need to do those before the trees, fauna and overgrowth. They're cut up cork panels held together by wires, the wires covered by ivy and dirt.

Eventually I think I will have air between them and make roots out of the wires in some places. I also added a tunnel I need to bulk up and put the figure there to show scale. So much to do but, I've got the time.

Ok, gonna be a bit smaller of a piece and pretty simple... but I think I'll have managed to work in both a trap door (of sorts) and some tentacles before it's over.

Basic rough idea. The frame is 2.5 parts thin cardboardy type stuff (like sandwiched cereal box cardboard or something... I can't find the stuff searching online but I appropriated a fair stock of it at Hobby Lobby on clearance) and 2.5 parts computer power supply case. I was going to use the whole case but I cracked it in half to clean the dust and decided I'd rather have both halves to make two buildings The card was the logical progression to fill in the gaps.

Could have used the sale-sign budget plasticard I keep stocked, but the cardboard stuff is a bit stiffer and doesn't warp as readily when treated with hot-glue.

Traced a base and carved the hole out, leaving it just a bit shy of the lower diameter so I could set the base into the hole upside down and expect it to stay. I'll probably add a washer or some pennies to counterweight it more readily in place for play. I liked the texture on the underside of the base, figured it would give me something to drybrush in a pinch, or potentially add more details to if time permits.

I'm going to install the whole thing onto a base of that same thin cardboard, but only after populating the inside.

I'm thinking this is a building on either a colony world, or possibly inside of a vast spaceship, the kind that have cities in them. Specifically Infinity Nomads stuff, but it will be generic enough to use for whatever. Inside will be seed-pods/spawn-embryos/developing plant monsters. I'm not exactly sure what I want to do with them just yet, but bet that hot glue will be involved. Probably some hot glue n' wire tentacles, and other hot glue for gross alien fluids and or slime I'll probably secure several pods to the walls and have a nest or two of them on the base. I'll probably permanently assemble the building with the base. The interior is meant to be more of a gotcha! or a 'burn it to death' kind of objective, rather than a playable space.

You can see the frame for the door. I may just paint the door on, painted right it will look just as good as a couple of pieces of plasticard stuffed into the space, but we'll see. I'm going to make a control panel but it will be smashed/blasted as the aliens didn't want their spawning soldiers discovered.

Probably some gubbins and or details added to the other sides of the building to give it some kind of sense of purpose. If nothing else, lots of scifi posters, adds, flyers, and graffiti.

Totally forgot about the accessibility and safety stuff. Will be a ladder up at least one side (not that you need them in most games, but for aesthetics) and some kind of railing around the top. Holes on top will be used to secure the railing or filled in. I'll probably do a bent hardware cloth style ladder as that's more scratch-buildy, even though I have a couple dozen deadzone ladders that would serve just fine May try to use some sprue for the railings up top, usually I use hardware cloth for those too but it would be harder to secure it to the metal roof.

TLDR: There will be alien pod people inside the building and lots of graffiti/posters before it's done. Oh, a ladder and some railing up top too.

Good to see some more progress.

Vik; nice woodwork. One thing, if you are going for sun-bleached wood (as the grey-ness seems to imply) take note of where the shadows would be and make the wood wood-coloured where the sun can't reach, fading to grey where the shadow ends. A wash of brown should do the trick for a start.

Stormwall; looks to be a nice layout. Think about hiding the "ball" nature of the expanded PS. A layer of tissue/PVA, "sand", or polyfiller-alike would work. Keep it a thin layer and you keep the random shape of the PS, but hide the balls.

GrimDork; Nice use of the power-supply box. Don't hide the shapes on the top too well, make use of them. Looking forward to tentacles.

So would that make it the 19th with the extension of one week?

So got some more done. I'm thinking of calling it a Taco Mars or something. Will probably just paint that on. Normally I'd do something on the PC and print it out so I guess free hand will be 'stepping out of my comfort zone'.

I used up half of the holes in the roof but 4 remain. I've got 6 total pods cut, need tentacles on 5 yet.

Getting close to ready for paint.

Bit of progress, down to painting and fixins:

Seed pod things need dipped, and I need to make kind of an interior to set in place under the building. Got a lot of tagging and posters to do, as well as the main signs.

So I didn't realize you could be bad at stencils... I'm gonna say it was the lack of professional pride of the owner, wouldn't pay a professional.

Back is the same. Time for some tagging and posters.

Guide lines and measuring the maximum space for letters are important even for stencils.

But an excuse, such as shoddy workmanship in the universe, also works. Make it a feature and add some other "mistakes" to sell that angle (paint runs/spills, etc.)

I see purple tentacles... woo!

So my lovelies, with one week to go, a wee reminder from the rules on your entry pics:

"7: Final Entry: Six or more photos of your final entry, showing top, front, both sides, back and all the important parts - not to be posted in this thread. PM me with links to your galleries, albums, etc. As I said above, please take the time to take the best photos that you can.
Together with your photos, I would like a statement of the items (a photo would be ideal) that you used. This is not a must, but would be helpful.

Feel free to include some fluff or an explanation of the model/setting to allow the rest of us to fully appreciate your work."

The end is in sight team! Get rivetting extraordinarily!

Did a couple of pieces of graffiti and added signs/ads/posters. I need to get some new signs/ads/posters/etc. I guess for my next scifi building.

Not necessarily done here, the signs need weathered and the top of the building looks awful lonely. Not sure I have time to make some scratchbuilt scatter to go up top, but I'm sure I can come up with some kind of crates and barrels. Since the rest of it is scratch built entirely though, I think I'd prefer to not add anything prefab.

Bit of tagging. I would like to do some more of this so I can get better at it. Also a GCPS recruitment banner (they're *all* over the place in this town...) and some wanted posters.

Some warnings/advisements and some more tagging.

If business wasn't bad enough before they tacked the dead body warning sign right on the front door...

Seed pods are also drying and will be sorted out tomorrow. I'd like to weather the paper add-ons and find some scattered bits to spruce up the top before submitting.

Nice work, Grim'.
A couple of things to potentially help;
The posters and graffiti now make the Taco Mars sign look a bit pale in comparison, maybe could do with a bit more on the red/orange to make it brighter.

And maybe some other smaller tags to add to the graffiti-ness.

Good job Cam'. I've seen in the gallery and I can't see anything to add as yet.

Hi guys. Floor coming along:

It's a 3x5 room with obstructions in the form of stair column and trap door.

Need thoughts from you wonderful dakkanauts about the floor though:
A - cool enough?
B - do I need to reinforce floor with a frame beneath? (the mesh will be glued to the underside of a plasticard frame to signify the edge of the board as on real Space Hulk tile pieces) If so, how?
C - (kind of linked to B) any ideas how best to highlight the squares that make up the playing spaces? Paint will look artificial, but am getting caught up on this element. The finished piece was meant to be suitable for use in game so you have to know where to put your pieces.

Cut out the grid you require, glue it with superglue and bi-carb. to the mesh, this will give you a nice rusty effect as well. Then create a sandwich with a base.

Cam has the idea! Kinda like making tiles...it also will make working with the mesh easier as the bigger the piece of mesh, the more rodeo you will need to master...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh. And to A : probably...to B if you can, read time permits and materials flat enough are handy...

Alrighty, got a couple more bits and bobs to add. Still want to do more but I'm lucky to have time to work on this today as it is.

The dumpster -- this will do, it's not perfect, but I couldn't find the same pill sorters that I used for my initial pill sorter dumpsters. A bit tall, and not 100% the traditional shape, but I think it will look fine painted up.

The grease/oil dumpster -- I'm pretty happy with this. It's actually the on/off switch for the power supply that was built into the case that makes up 3/5 of the building. I figured a restaurant needed a grease dumpster.

The HVAC thing -- I've opted to leave the top alone, let it suggest the space/future. Harvesting components off of old motherboards is a pain in the ass, but this piece looked just right. I added some wires/pipes and made a faceplate to cover the rough side where I had to dremel it off the board.

So if I can get these three things painted by the 12th, I'll be happy to say I'm done with the project. If I can add more, I plan to. The backs of the Taco Mars signs are plain, they could use some scribbling like 'for a good time call slutty mcslutterton at ###-#### but maybe ab it more space/future'. And some more tagging up there if time permits.

I'll turn things over to Really Excited Display Monster to cap things off:

THANKS GRIM. LOOK AT THIS STUFF! TWO DUMPSTERS AND SOME THING THAT GOES UP ON THE ROOF! I LOVE ROOFS, YOU CAN JUMP DOWN ON PEOPLE AND THEN EAT THEM! BACK TO YOU GRIM!

Whew, that guy is always excited isn't he folks? More later

Yeah, I don't usually count on getting anything done on Saturdays, the wife and kids tend to make plans for me But we'll see. It may not be as rainy as I was expecting.

I'm gonna add some bottle-cap barrels for some extra scatter value and so the roof actually provides some cover for games like Infinity where you need a certain percentage of your model obscured. Pretty quick stuff, but y'know. May as well glob it on to the entry as it's scratch built and technically (temporarily) attached to the building.

Also a question. What can I do with these holes in the roof? The HVAC/thing uses one up pretty well, but I'm not sure how to utilize the others.

I could cover them up with the barrels as in the second photo, though that's a bit lazy and doesn't solve the problem all the time.

Thoughts?

sorry i'm a little slow on the upswing, but i broke a finger 2 days ago and it hasn't been a barrel of monkeys trying to stay working without pain medication.

great work from everyone--even those who didn't actually finish by the deadline.

having competed and now judged these contests, i can say that judging can be a conundrum, and probably the more difficult of the two.

as an aside, i would suggest to anyone who wants to should post a link to their WIP and/or completed project galleries here, now that the contest is over. the contest page usually gets a lot of traffic - almost 6,000 hits for this contest thread alone - and it's good, free advertising.

looking forward to the next project (and hopefully it's far-in-the-future deadline, so i can heal and compete again!)

Right, well then, this is it!

First thanks to all for participating, and my patient and helpful fellow judges GawdamSumbish and Yggdrasil. It was very tough and there was no small amount of discussion, debate and argument We weren't 100% in agreement but a consensus was reached.

So, onto the order:

Winner
Spoiler:

Viktor Von Domm

Congratulations! In the end, it was the scope, ambition and interpretation of the contest that really swung it for Vik. The judges were particularly impressed with all the little details that went into the build and how Vik pushed himself as a modeller. As a criticism, some of the paintwork on the character models could have been tidier.

Runner-Up
Spoiler:

Camkieri

I cannot stress how close it was between the top 2 - a single point separated them. The judges agreed that, in terms of painting, Cam's was outstanding and certainly the build itself made us all laugh. The hinge mechanism and separate floor were great touches also. Could've used more rivets though

Honorable mention
Spoiler:

Littetower
This was a great build, and probably the most playable of all the pieces. The painting was great, too; where this one fell down was it didn't quite encapsulate the theme in the way the others did.

And the People's Choice:
Spoiler:

Camkieri - very well deserved!

Thanks to all who participated, for making this the most stressful judging experience ever, and all who voted, commented and contributed! To the participants, if you pm we can discuss prizes etc, and specific critiques of your entry if you wish. On to round 16!
Cheers,
graven

I'll be damned, didn't see this coming...

I'm currently too perplexed to come up with something coherent...all I can say is thank you judges, and thanks to my fellow competitors for giving me a good run for my money...

I mostly worked in secret the last days, to keep a lid on the whole z' theme...also...last week I have been a bit quieter due to having started a job...so I guess life is pouring me from a big cornucopia...

I am really floating now^^ gotta see what can be done for a new theme...but I am open for suggestions nevertheless

Again: many thanks to all who have been part of this cool event!

Yours truly, vik

Congratulations sir. Truly well deserved. I felt you really pushed yourself.

Well done LT as well. Though I think all the finalists work was brilliant.

Deputy had a lot going on and considering how short a time he did a great job.

Grims is fantastic. Even looks like a thrown together shack. Excellent work. Loved The extras as well.

LT cracking use of bits. Inspired piece. But I have seen you do better.

And that is why Vik won for me as well. He pushed his own bar up.the weathering and effects are brilliant. Fantatic composition well executed.

Lets see what the next one brings.

Took me some time, but I finally made it back!!

Congrats Vik, well deserved! Packed with action and detail.

Cam, once again, a masterful piece. Nothing to add but more praise to it!

Grim and TP^DC, great pieces both, I'd be proud to have them on my shelf, sorry, table (I don't get to play much, )

Great round, Graven, thanks again!

As for mine, thanks a lot for the votes and comments to all. I indeed went for a playable piece over a full dio or display piece this time; it workes well as such, but that definitively can't match the all-out work of the winning builds!

Paradigm wrote:...Littletower's is probably the one I'd most want on a gaming table as functional terrain, with the raised areas, LoS blocking aspect and the fact it occupies a good space without making it inaccessible.

Went for Littletower's in the end for the reasons above, but congrats to everyone!

Thanks, Paradigm! "the one I'd most want on a gaming table", I can hardly think of higher praise .

GrimDork wrote:Littletower, very playable set-up. You've made the base materials look uniform and functional.

Thank you! Nice build, though I don't think I'd actually want to eat there...

TP^DC Deputy Manager wrote:Littletower - your connecting hubs are really cool and agree that I would definitely pick your's as tabletop terrain.

Ditto. And good job to you too!

Good turn out, nice work everyone, and well done to the judges.

Vik: Congratulations. Your turn to be the "bride" and not the bridesmaid.
It is a lovely piece. Really well made and designed. Nice story-telling too.
Wood (both burnt and not) is good.
Really like the overgrown stones.
Where did the mantrap come from?
Keep working on your painting and bring it up to the level of your modelling. Then you'll be unbeatable.

Cam: Congratulations to you too.
So many nice details and great job on the paintwork.
Can't really add anything. You got my vote for the Monty Python reference.

LT: Really solid and very playable pieces. Great use of the junction boxes.
Short of some scenery bases, I can't think of anything to add.

Grim': Yay for tentacles. Glad my comment inspired you to build.
The tentacle egg things look good, and nice work on the graffiti.
Something that has only just hit me and something to keep in mind for the future; the window could do with a frame, even if it's just painted on around the piece.

TP^DC: Good job. Lots of details.
Nice work on the mesh flooring and under-floor details.
Work on disguising/avoiding your brushstrokes to take it to the next level. I can't really help with this much as I use a different medium, but try when doing "dirty"/streaky washes to add water to the surface alternately to the actual black or brown wash and let it run under gravity and spread via diffusion, rather than trying to spread it with your brush. Almost as if you are trying to wash away the black paint by running water over it. Keep most of your brush movement in the vertical plane to avoid disturbing this look.

Congrats Vik! Really well deserved!

Well done everyone else who finished, it was a really cool selection of things you came up with. I'd love to see video turnarounds of them.

@Dr H - thanks for the advice. I knew that let me down, but was lost as to how to solve it. I'll give your tip a go next time.

Congrats Vik , sorry for the delay in wishing that.

Also does this mean that we will finally have your Lego to tabletop challenge you spoke of a long time ago? Where we first build it in lego and then have to build it from scratch.
