Welcome all to the 57th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For those who haven't seen the challenge before, it is a community-focused friendly competition open to anyone on the site, regardless of your skill level or experience. Every round contributes towards a League table, which ultimately means nothing but is a lot of fun to keep an eye on and jockey for position with Dakka's other painters.
This month, the theme is Heroes and Villains, so we're looking for the paragons of good and evil, those whose mighty deeds earn them glory and renown or infamy and dread. From heroic commanders pulling victory from the jaws of defeat to the dastardly assassins dispatched to slide a blade between their ribs, there's a whole spectrum of options for this theme, so off we go!
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in. The overall winner of the League for this year will receive a set of Dakka Dice.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of November and will end at midnight UK time on the 30th of November. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
Well, just got into DCUniverse miniature game, so heroes and villains? I’ve already started my Lexcorp army, but I just assembled my Justice league Dark models. I may have to pick 5 of them out to be my challenge for the month.
Proof pic. JLD assembled with other stuff, messy work area .
Not sure which of the JLD I’ll do just yet, and I think I’ll do the three Lexcorp troopers who are primed in the picture to be the villains.
Midget Gems wrote: Nice Progress Jamie. Watch out for Arrows to the knee that might stop your painting career
Going for something different this month a recent model and hopefully just in time of the SOB release, just going to try and focus on painting it well
Sister Superior Amalia Novena Proof
Midget Gems,
Looks like we are going to have a duel as I am doing the same model. Although you will have the advantage as I am mounting her on a regular 25mm base instead of the display one.
Spoiler:
Pistols or swords?
I have not built a GW plastic of a new model in ages...and I have to admit I was impressed by the small detail. Last GW plastics I have constructed have been tanks and aircraft from 10 year old sculpts...and they were all pretty simple.
Tossing my hat in the ring with these 2. Working on a lord discordant too but started him in October, hoping this challenge will get me to finish him and both of these.
Hi everyone! Been lurking on DakkaDakka for nearly 2 1/2 years now without posting
But I'm very much enjoying these painting comp threads and thought this would be a good opportunity to start posting at least little. I'll submit my Primaris Lt. and the Primaris Ancient.
I can enter the Ancient because he has only one color (besides priming silver) on him, did I understand that right in the rules?
Greetings folks!
I would like to try to to paint these guys for the challenge, a herforge model (the hero) and some models from the dark souls board game, and that huge base from i think forge world, hope that the base dosnet count as a model XD
oh well here goes nothing

Well done for finishing so soon ShadowsAndDust I can only dream of painting that quickly.
Welcome back hotshot a nice variety of poses to your models
and also Welcome Viterbi, yep both those models are good to enter, well done for final taking the plunge and joining us, I'm looking forward to see how you paint them.

Yeah most of my stuff is older, there does seem to be rather a lot of small details on this model so quite impressed with it. I welcome a dual
Swords! *he says when slowing reaching for his pistol*
For the latest in my series of "This month's painting challenge is a convenient excuse to finally paint...", I shall use this challenge theme as an excuse to finally paint...
Gregor Eisenhorn.
Hero or villain? Depends what sort of inquisitorial philosophy you adhere to.
Thanks for the warm welcome @Paradigm and @Midget Gems!
Progress of last night, LT got his washes for the armour and both models the gold armour details and basecoated the banner. Next step is blocking in pouches and purity seals with white for their contrast paint treatment.
Well if it’s okay I want to change my plan. I downloaded rules for a game called Rumbleslam from ttcombat.com. It’s a miniature wrestling game , while I won’t be using their models I’m going to try it out with my son this week. Figured I’ll just use some bones models that I picked up last night. Started painting and realized I hadn’t taken a picture yet . Hopefully you can see it’s not even a full base coat yet. So the hero vs Gillian will be in the squared circle.
Got some painting done on the two bones figs.
Guess I should paint some pants on the “Female” figure even though her boobs are just out there . Not done with them yet, but feeling good about the change of direction. Now to find some flunkies to go with them.
Jadenim wrote: That’s a nice colour and, silly as it sounds, excellent gold.
Thx, but I believe the light is doing half the work for me And would be cool, if you find the time for Eisenhorn, would love to see a showdown with Bellerophon. I painted the model last year, it is a fun one.
My experience with this contest is that lightning is half the battle; I’ve had some great looking models (imho!) that I’ve really struggled to get decent photos of (and I know I’m not alone in this).
Got the bases ready for snow and finished the beige on the dragon today. I used stippling for the first time on the wings and my usual thin layer approach for the body working from zandri dust, to ushabti bone and then pallid Wych flesh. I'm pretty happy with it but let me know what you think.
Small Update, mostly little stuff like pouches (which you can't see from this angle ), purity seals, cleaning and shading the Ancient's gun and stuff like that.
Figured I'd enter with this ghost I've recently aquired. Figured I'd paint him as a villian hunting unfortunate souls travling through a lost graveyard.
I want to take this opportunity to practice lighting and glow effects, something I've always wanted to get good at. (I'm terrible atm.)
And, in one of my quicker paintjobs, I'm done. Here are my final photos of Celestine, The Living Saint (and her faithful Geminae Superia):
This is one of the more fun projects I've ever done, and very satisfying somehow as well. Just in time for the release of a whole army of plastic Sisters too. I look forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with for the month!
Thanks dudes. I wanted to evoke a ww1 feel, but not just build a trench with sandbags and duck board base. I found a photo of a forest with all the trees destroyed by artillery and was inspired by that. Added the snow for a bastogne feel and to contrast the duller tones of the horse.
I'm almost finished now, need to wait for the snow paste to dry then I will add some snow flock. Also need a colour for the dragons tongue if anyone has any suggestions.
Sister is looking very nice Captain Brown! I also envy people, who are able to paint eyes, I never seem to manage it and always botch up their face, if I try .
Viterbi: My personal method (that I picked up here) is to lay down the skin color, go back in and do the eyes with an acceptance of sloppiness, and then clean up again with the skin color because there's more room there for error, then do shading
James shred: looking nice. I'd suggest maybe a mauve/magentaish for the tounge?
Vejut wrote: Viterbi: My personal method (that I picked up here) is to lay down the skin color, go back in and do the eyes with an acceptance of sloppiness, and then clean up again with the skin color because there's more room there for error, then do shading
Thanks, may give that a try, when painting the next character. Troops won't get eyes, otherwise I get probably mad
Proof pic. I have some mold lines and gaps to fill on him, and then I should be able to start painting him this week/weekend. Going to be a nice palette cleanser in between Necron pieces!
Some great looking models coming along. Nice Eisenhorn - love the skull on the staff expecially.
Also love the definition on the back muscles, DV8 - looking good.
I'm almost finished on Gotrek and decided to expand his base a bit, using a couple of extra models.
Proof.
WIP pic. Need to do some edges, clean up and the cape. Probably going to do a lot of the touch up work after assembly.
Just as a friendly reminder to people like myself who rely on next month’s vote going up to light the fire and get moving: December is the wildcard, so there is no vote. So get cracking!
Nmatters - Hello and Welcome to Dakka and the challenge, a very ethereal feel to your model, the sword was worth the effort its come out very well with a good rusty effect.
Well done for finishing your entries Zerg, Rybrook, Viterbi, Yorkright, Bellerophon, Jamie Shred, Jadenim. Solid entries all around.
queen_annes_revenge good luck with the eye surgery, your better than most of us even without it
Captain Brown - Nice work, looks like you are winning the race so far
I'm getting absolutely hammered at work working 12 - 14 hours a day and some extra over the weekend. 1 year old was throwing up all this weekend as well so no time for painting.
Just dropping in to remind folks that December will be the usual open round, so while the usual rules all still apply, there is no theme so you can paint whatever you like.
Lovely stuff as always everyone. Nice to see a few names I don't recognise as well!
I'm going to paint a villain - Boba Fett from Star Wars Legion.
I'm very late entering, but I actually took the proof pic a few days ago but have only got round to uploading it today. I've started painting him and made some progress. Two things to observe - Fantasy Flight miniatures are terrible for mould lines. The mould lines themselves are no worse than most companies, but the kind of plastic they use makes them incredibly difficult to remove. There are a couple I simply could not get rid of, so look out for them in the finished piece! Also, Boba is a really detailed model, more so than you think when you watch the films. His armour is a real hodge-podge of differently-coloured panels - green, red, grey, yellow, blue...
feltmonkey wrote: Also, Boba is a really detailed model, more so than you think when you watch the films. His armour is a real hodge-podge of differently-coloured panels - green, red, grey, yellow, blue...
Yup! Even the greens on his armor are inconsistent. The cheek plates are a different green from the rest of the helmet, which is a different green from his chest pieces!
So I thought I'd finished my commissar but I've noticed parts I've missed, so this is still a WIP photo. Will finish him up tonight most likely and get finished photos tomorrow.
A tentative entry from me. I may have something better by the end of the month, but in case that doesn't arrive in time, I'll match (in theme, if not in quality! ) Feltmonkey's villainous Boba Fett with the archetypal Hero-In-The-End, Han Solo.
Pretty pleased with how he's come out, certainly a change of pace after a month of painting nothing but DC stuff to go back to Heroic Scale minis (his head is the size of the torso of the Robin I just painted! ) but I'm happy enough with it, especially the shirt and the face (it's not the best likeness, but it'll certainly do). Still not sure why they decided to sculpt him in the Endor trench coat that he wears for half of one film rather than his iconic jacket that he dons far more often.
I'll get the OP updated with everyone's entries tomorrow.
A late entry from me! I've already started a bit, and have a few days off here before the end of the month, so hopefully I'll get it done.
From the world of Infinity, a Hero (if you're part of the independent space-faring Nomads) or a Villain (if you're part of the powers that be) the Reverend Superior Cassandra Kusanagi
Proof pic:
I've just got the base to do on Boba after spending most of my day off painting fiddly weathering onto tiny armour panels. I'm at that phase where you genuinely can't tell if it's any good or not. I've been staring at it too long. I keep showing my wife and asking "does this look like battered old metal?" while she's in the middle of something more important.
Some really lovely stuff on this page, by the way. QAR, I think your commissar is going to be one of my favorites this month. The model really suits your style, and the desaturated colours you use.
Para - Did you find Han's eyes to be an absolute nightmare? They're just holes in that sculpt, aren't they? I think your approach of just painting them black is better than my attempt to paint eyes into the void.
Viterbi - Very nice! I love the banner. I know you're not happy with the lettering, but it's cool anyway. Regarding the lettering, I've been learning how to do gothic script over the last few months, reading and watching quite a few guides, so I hope you don't mind me passing on what I've learnt. It is possible to do passable gothic script without needing superhuman skills. You can find apps and websites that will convert what you want into a variety of gothic typefaces, so first use one of those to make yourself a reference to copy. Then you need to plan it out by starting - quite counter-intuitively - in the middle. use really thinned paint and a thin brush with a very good point. I personally think pens are a bit of a trap as although they are arguably easier to control, they only give you one shot at it. Using the thinned paint and starting in the middle, sketch out the script. Then you go over and over it with the thinned paint, letting it dry inbetween and building it up in layers. The thinned paint helps it look neater in the final version, as you will hit the right areas more than the wrong ones, and the mistakes will be a single bit of thinned paint and be harder to spot. That's the theory, at least.
Yeah, the eyes are weird... To be honest, I didn't even try and paint them, I more focused on darkening the socket/under the brow to hide the fact there's nothing there and focused on getting the rest of the face to look right so they didn't really stand out...
My progress after today's work, just a few tweaks with GS away from paint. Damn I hope I'll have time to get some color on him before the 30th. If not it was still a fun project, even tho some areas got a bit rushed. If I don't find time before the 30th., you can follow the process here https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/782865.page
"Burn them all, The God-Emperor will know His own"
Grand Master Stibor Lazaerek was the reigning Chapter Master of the Fire Hawks when he, along with the entire Chapter, were lost to the warp in 963.M41. More warrior than general, and sadly both as petty and cruel as he was arrogant, Stibor had at that point led his Knight-Astartes through more than 500 years of conflict. Overseeing both triumph and failure during those long years, his last known actions led to what was undoubtably the once great chapter's darkest hours.
Driven by his resentment and rivalry with Lufgt Huron of the Astral Claws, the bitter old man had a solid hand in escalating the Badab Schism into full out civil war, plunging his forces into the conflict. Unfortunately, his bombastic strategies and the frontal fighting traditions of the Fire Hawks were no match for the tactical ingenuity of the Mantis Warriors, nor the cold hearted logic of the Tyrant of Badab. Driven back, suffering horrendous casualties and worse still, loosing the overall command of the loyalist forces, Lazaerek was humiliated and exposed, choosing to let his anger loose on undeserving civilian populations, bombing planets from orbit and committing uncalled for atrocities.
On the battlefield however, Stibor still made a magnificent figure. Aged by untold wounds and conflict through the centuries, the old knight couldn't match his former provers, but even then he was a formidable opponent. Clad in the chapters most precious piece of equipment; an ancient suit of tactical dreadnought armour, build around the fabled Mk1, and incorporating a prototype assault cannon, the suit was said to have been blessed by Sebastian Thor himself after the victory over Vandire in the Age of Apostasy. In addition to the incoporated twin powerfist of the suit, the Grand Master also wielded his personal power glaive. A massive weapon, boldly captured in his youth during a raid on an unknown renegade chapter.

Thanks feltmonkey! I'll probably try again with the banner in the course of the next year and will try out your advice.

Thanks! That's the feel I wanted for this guy.
And seconded on the freehand technique. That's exactly how I do my gothic freehand. Can't remember the exact site but it's a font conversion site. Just type blackletter font generator in Google.
So I came on to post my finals but realised I haven't uploaded my proof yet Hoping its still okay, took this photo at the beginning of the month or end of last but not sure which. If this is no bueno no problem!
Some absolutely amazing work this month from everybody, its going to be a very tightly contested poll!
So, while he's technically 'finished', I'm really disappointed with how the tiefling came out, and the cyborg and avatar are even worse, so I'd kinda like to change my entry? Doing up an Harbringer of Horus, Aspect of the Avenger from WarGods.
back in april, but never really got to him until this month:
How he was around midmonth, when I used him for some army painter tone experiments:
and how he is today:
Just gotta let the plaster base dry so I can make it look less junky...
With contrast paints and a free day, one day might be enough!
Here is my take on a wight king using the wargames atlantic skeleton warriors sprue
Proof
Pretty happy with how he came out. Slight build issue on one wrist, but from a distance it’s not that bad. Experiment with a printed shoulder pad. Clean up was a bear, and it’s a little rough on some points. But again, arm’s length it’s fine. The layered shoulder is one of the hallmarks of the champions, and I wanted him to have one. Getting the torso halves to line up took a bit of knife work, and then finding a pair of legs that fit between the cape and petuges had a lot of trials.
But he’s ready for battle now, to uphold the honour of the chapter and blender his way through any foes that challenge the might of the Ultramarines.
I'm almost certainly not going to finish. I;m not getting the effect I want on a couple of things and I have very little time left today in which painting's an option. Shame, I may finish over the next couple of days.
I'm really close to finishing but probably going to take one more day. Fingers crossed there is a 24hr amnesty even though I don't deserve it and have no excuse.
Gettign this in now before I forget that November ends tonight!
Presenting - First Lieutenant Camael, Blood Ravens, Second Company
One of my favourite ever sculpts so I decided to go the extra distance do a NMM Aquila and Skull on the banner. First time doing NMM so I'm quite pleased with the reason, even if its not as good as I would like. I think my big drawback was that my colour palette for the NMM gold is the same palette as the background so it looses the effect quickly.
A long-serving veteran of the Blood Ravens, Camael was blooded on Kaurava against the undead warriors of the Necron. Since rising to the rank of Lieutenant, heir to Second Company, he has adopted a Necron skull into his personal heraldry as the company has done with their company standard. Camael dedicates himself to the study and destruction of the ancient Xenos race, and has clashed with them many times over the centuries.
Gee willickers! This is the latest I've ever posted. The mini was finished days ago but life has just been crazy!
I tried to experiment with 'light' and modelling this month. I'm happy with how the base turned out - I reckon it looks like it all fits together pretty well. I'm happy if I reckon it looks like you've done nothing and it just came out of the box that way. The skaven are from a really old Warhammer box and from the newer skaven underworlds warband. The timber is just plasticard decorated with bits of leftover skaven.
The light really should have been more exaggerated but I was a bit chicken. Some of the other models I painted this month are more effective because I was more brave with them!
The skaven are all painted in desaturated tones to contrast with the bright, warm tones of Gotrek but the photos really wash out the contrast and make it all look really flat. The orange coming from Gotrek's axe looks all one colour and highlights on the scenery and skaven themselves are almost invisible. I really need to practise my photography skills a lot more...
Anyhow, here is my extended base Gotrek.
Good luck everyone! See you all in 'Open' month...I hate this month, there are always too many choices!
Great work guys and to everyone thats finished so far.
Woks been kicking my ass the last 2 weeks so not done much, have done about 2 hours this evening to get it to at least an ok standard. Will post the pics in the morning now its late here.
Final Pics as Promised for Sister Superior Amalia Novena, very much a rushed job with still a basic painting job and mistakes but an entry none the less, wasn't even sure I would be able to get anything done in time up to last night.
Viterbi wrote: Nice Sister @Midget Gems can't believe that's a rush job, especially the face.
Thanks for the comment Viterbi I'm glad you like it, I wasn't sure on the face, thought id turned her a bit undead and needed some more life in it but if one person is happy thats a win for me
I'll endeavour to get the poll up ASAP, I've been a bit ill (just a rough cold, nothing serious!) the last few days and completely forgot. Apologies for the delay.
Resurrecting this thread as I wanted to show everyone that I did eventually finish my entry. Was only going to be a few days late due to issues with the robes, but that got scotched by an infection in my good eye (the other one is ok for daily life, but everything's a bit too fuzzy around the edges for painting) and then there were the holidays and seemingly spending every day travelling somewhere or other followed by a loss of motivation...
Anyway, massively late, but the necromancer is complete:
