Dakka Painting Challenge Round 65 July 2020: Objective Secured! @ 2020/07/01 10:08:01

Post by: Paradigm

Welcome all to the 65th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.

This month, the theme is Objective Secured. Your entry should feature models who possess the gear, skills,or sheer tenacity and hardiness,to hold, vital strategic points, or press forward and wrest soch locations from the enemy's grasp. Alternatively, objective markers or pivotal terrain features that reflect such locations are also valid entries.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to five models as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of July and will end at midnight UK time on the 31st of July. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Battle Sisters from the army box, still on sprue. I'll try to paint all ten and then just pick the 5 most representative

I'm going with the varanguard, rank and file of the everchosen himself. I tend to batch spray with my airbrush when I use it, so much like the marauders last month I have already sprayed on a coat of bronze, but as that is only two minutes work and just a base layer I'm hoping it's ok.

Proof;

It's a really long time since I've entered one of these. Great to see lots of the same names here, and a bunch of new ones too!

I really fancied any of the other subjects because my plan for July is Eisenhorn and Cherubael. Could the Malus Codicium be the objective? Eisenhorn has definitely secured that

No problem if that's too tenuous, I'll be painting him either way.

I am going to enter an Eldar Phoenix Lord...because that is all I have left to paint. Perhaps an objective marker that I build from scratch to go with him.

Cheers,

I've not entered one of these before, but this one ticks a number of boxes and helps push me along the route to my new army for 9th. I'll be going for a squad of Tallarn desert raiders that just came off the 3d printer. I'll pick whichever are the best 5 nearer the end

Mind saying what those models actually are? They look like they might make for an interesting cultists of Tzeentch or Slaanesh squad. Or a "counts as" Tomb Kings spears squad.

Nevelon won't be the only one entering with Infiltrators this month. I'll be painting these up for my Dark Angels army. Here's the proof pic:

I'm kind of on a little project to get as much of my Primaris stuff done as possible before the new box set drops, so this will help with that goal.

Why not lotr? They have plenty of generic massed infantry to choose from.

... also, doesn't basically every second scene in lotr/hobbit involve someone holding a vital strategic point? Guess you could pick any random named lotr character and some plot point where they're securing some kind of objective would come to mind

They're mildly reposed and weapon swapped Basti Skirmishers from Crocodile Games, for their WarGods of Aegyptus game, like most of the weird pseudo-egyptian things I post.

I'm putting together an ad-hoc multi-craftworld force in order to select Ynnari/Rhana Dandra kill teams from. Focussing on guardians this month, so here are (nearly) all of the guardian defenders and storm guardians I'm painting. Some of them are obviously painted beyond base colours (two are actually complete) so they obviously don't qualify. There are also custom heads and unorthodox loadouts in there to make things a bit more interesting. I'll select 5 that qualify from the whole lot, and maybe the eldar pillar as an objective, too.

The craftworlds are as follows -

Back row from left: Saim Hann, Biel Tan, Mymeara, Yme-Loc
Middle row: Iyanden, Alaitoc, Altansar, Mymeara, Ulthwe
Front row: Arach-Qin, Iybraesil, Stel-Uit

I've also got a couple of Il Kaithe and a couple of Kaelor built, but I ran out of white primer, so if I decide to enter any of them I'll add proof photos for them later.

My entry should be colourful at the very least!

Thanks! Perhaps a whole pseudo-Egyptian cultist following for my eventual Thousand Sons army. I have one old squad from the previous sculpt era and I always did like their pseudo-Egyptian aesthetic. I hope they can still be used with a normal Chaos Undivided army as Elites though, since I'll probably never buy enough of the actual models for more than a small patrol size. I do really want a squad of those Scarab Cult Terms though. I've wanted Thousand Sons themed Terms since I started playing back in 4th Ed.

Ah right, I plan to enter 5 Kasrkin as my entry for this month. Didn't get to last months for a number of reasons, but I've gained some drive. Helps that the other half the squad was finished 7+ years ago... It does not help that all the original paints are dead and I do not have close replacements for the one I used for lenses and the one I used for the sensors. Oh well, I'll hopefully make it work somehow. I should have proofs by tomorrow.

These are 6mm scale Regult Tactical Battlepods for Robotech RPG Tactics. They are nimble and well-armed, and their rocket nozzles allow them to double as space fighters. They are, however, very poorly-armored. They are the standard infantry mecha of the Zentraedi. I'll see how many I can paint in the time allotted.

Rather than the guys to secure the objective, I've decided to paint up the obejctive to be secured:

I put together the transporter platform using a container for camembert cheese, with some bits from the Maelstrom's Edge terrain sprue. I'll add some pieces from the Sedition Wars terrain set to be control panels, power sources and such.

I will probably paint up something from my Combined. Just nailed the color scheme on a "test" Worm (which I realize in hindsight are supposed to be support models?)

No clue yet which ones I'll pick; we'll see what I manage to get done this month. Will update this post with proof pic later.

Alright, I'm gonna try something crazy, but I'm working with what I got.

I'm going to try painting this squad of guardsmen (please ignore the failed attempt at an ice world flurry camo on three, I will be painting right over it for this):

Using only these paints (hopefully all the Citadel paints still work right after so long):

If this fails miserably, I will be painting the five unpainted Kasrkin behind them and attempting to match the 7+ year old color scheme on the five painted ones using some of the same paints and the red and blue Grumbacher in the picture because that's what I've got for those two colors.

Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.

The first coat of white has gone surprisingly well! The paint on the first model was dry before I even finished the fifth. It's even doing a decent job covering the previous paint on the three.

Haha Freya good to see I'm not the only one on Dakka who binged BNA this weekend. The color scheme on the guns looks interesting, are you sticking with the Space Wolves for the rest of the armour scheme? Does kinda fit in with BNA, heh.

Here's my first sister, still lots of details missing but I think I'll work on the others now. Also they're getting seapunk/grunge hair because why not.

Did you link the wrong picture? Neither appear to have anything to do with the webway or the ObSec theme.

Although I guess if you stretch the theme a bit and take some interpretational liberties, I suppose you could say any character model "possess the gear, skills,or sheer tenacity and hardiness,to hold, vital strategic points, or press forward and wrest soch locations from the enemy's grasp."

It does seem a bit sneaky of the coordinator to change the theme description after voting, since most people are going off of the original description: "Battles are won by more often than not by holding vital ground, key strategic locations., and it generally falls to the rank and file of an army to take such positions. Your entry should consist of such troops, be they mindless minion, conscripted masses or simply those whose role it os to take and hold the line."

I honestly didn't even notice they had done that until I went looking just now to see how those three would fit in.

But maybe you are right.actually szeras is not suit the theme.

I love your sister. The armor is so hard to do. I still can't do white armor lol!

I'm planning to do a little bit of a diverging theme. Have some colorshift metalics coming in... but the armor color will just be the standard colors. Primaris are so much less interesting to paint than any spacewolves model and it makes me bored. I need to do something interesting!!!!

The models are from Reptilian Overlords with some guns from Thingiverse. The Elegoo Mars is a great investment if you want an infantry heavy force. Those 10 cost about £1.10 in resin to print

Thanks! That's incredibly cheap for 10 guys compared to most normal models. I don't have a printer right now as I said, and I probably won't have the money for a decent one in the near future, but I know a place in town that has printers available. About how much time does a ten man squad normally take to print?

To clarify, the wording of the theme is never meant to be restrictive, it's always 100% open to interpretation with the initial title and description just meant as guidelines to spark ideas. In the 65 rounds so far I've only ever turned maybe 3 entries away for being so far from the theme that they're not at all relevant. in general the rule of thumb is that if you think your entry fits, it almost certainly does! Apologies for the confusion, I forget sometimes that every month we get new people joining who might not be familiar with how we generally do things and so these bits go unmentioned.

Fair enough. I'm usually one of those people that overanalyzes and has a strong tendency of adherence to given rules with some bend for ease of access and fun, so seeing them changed after the group decision was a bit of a take back. I understand the desire to be more inclusive through allowing vague interpretation of the descriptions like this, it's just in my nature to feel off about it when it comes to competitions like this, even friendly ones.

Of course, I have to question why there's even a theme at all if you're just going to stretch it to allow almost anything to be entered. If you don't have a theme, no one can complain. They choose their own model entry so they can't feel snubbed if they pick something significantly harder than anyone else, no one feels forced out if they don't have any models that fit the "theme" or want to paint something else from their list, and no one has to come up with a stretched explanation of how their choice "fits" somehow. If everyone can just paint what they want you'll probably get more participation in the end and you'll get to see a much wider variety of cool models.

I think the theme is there as an inspiration, and possibly a measure to prevent submissions that are ripped pictures from web or previously painted models.

Having a theme also helps give a little structure to the voting. I’ve voted for technically less well done models over better paint, just because them embodied the theme a lot better.

It also helps to gently stretch our comfort zones for what we paint. There is stuff I entered that would still be gracing the pile of shame if not for this contest. By keeping the theme open, we ensure that most people can probably find something in their backlog that fits. Or give them an excuse to pick up something fun and new.

It keeps things fresh. If it was just enter something random every month, I doubt we would still be going strong.

While a competition, this is more about community and improving ourselves as painters. If someone is stretching the theme to enter, it’s not because they are gaming the system to win, it’s because they want to join us and play, and that’s what they have that (kinda) fits the theme. Our goal is to be inclusive, not exclusive.

Exactly!
If not for the contest I wouldn't of resumed my DE. Theme makes you think and pull out unfinished backlog pile.

Some progress of mine.
Each body part painted prior to gluing for ease of brush access.
But wanted arms to be together with the torso during assembly, so I can play with dynamic poses.

This month's theme was a bit tricky for me, since I don't have any army-scale projects on the go, and I was struggling to find enthusiasm for the figures I picked. However I'm happy enough with how they're progressing to throw my hat into the ring again.

Proof Picture...

All sorts of Dune quotes could be appropriate for that showdown.

Finished:

Quite happy with how these guys turned out. I’d done a couple of their squad mates in this scheme to test, but this is the first time I’d sat down and batch painted a squad of them. I think there is one guy from the full kit in there, the rest are from the monobuild SC box. One perk of the fixed builds is that it lets you get the poses down better.

I found a suitable entry after all.
Who better to capture an objective than a bunch of your everyday kriegsmen, and who better to hold it than two of them with an autocannon.

Just the one team, as I only have one of them. Bought it for a display project, but it never made the final version. Now is as good time as any to finally paint it.

Two kriegsmen and an autocannon, sounds like an into line to a WWXVIIII film.
For decoration I ran into these jewelers glass beads, look like large caliber shells.

Varnish should not mess with the pigment. It may just darken it. Do a test to be sure

I'm planning on doing some gradients on the right shoulder. I find the space wolf colors to be a bit boring when left in a simple gradient like they are. Might airbrush the color transition this time... not sure.
As to the eyes... one word. Retardant. If you don't use any kind of paint retardant your paint will dry before it ever hits the model especially for eyes.

Thanks Mothsniper. It started as a way to differentiate the primaris units in my SW army from the old guard. I've really enjoyed painting this scheme though.

First time completing something for a Dakka contest. First time creating fake snow for the base. Not as great as some of the stuff in this thread, but I'm happy with it, as it's a big improvement over my first few models!

Another way to tackle eyes is to use a bigger brush than you'd think, but spend time getting a good point on it. More paint will be held in the bristles, meaning that it won't dry out on you.

Yeah. On a fresh and well pointed synthetic, or with a W&N series 7, I can do at least basic eyes with the same #1 I use for doing the rest of the general work on the model and even not have cleanup to do most of the time.

Depends on the circumstances really. I use a big brush generally speaking but on a hot day it doesn't matter how much paint I have in it, the tip will dry out fast. Besides... if you wanna have creamy blends you need retardant so may as well buy some and use it to make life easier.

I have retardants, flow aids, and thinners of all kinds. I don't use them for eyes, but in the UK we rarely get days that go above 30 Celsius, and most days are far more temperate than that anyway, so probably isn't as necessary. I do use those them for other things though.

Also depends on what paints you use though. 30 Celsius is still rather hot and will make some paints harder to use. What paints do you use?

A mix of citadel, Vallejo, revell and recently gsw. I've started using a wet palette too to help keep the paint moist for longer. It rarely hits 30 here though, most days are between 19 and 24, so pretty good on average for painting.

Hobby time seems to have vanished into the warp last coup!e of months, but my main reason for doing the challenge was to ensure I got some things finished, so don't want to miss a month.

So much awesome work done by so many - great lighting effects, great colour fades, great conversions...I love this thread!

I am going to enter these guys - I reckon half of the game is all about securing objectives.

Dig it!

Further WIP on barbs. I wanted to give the effect of a riot situation, so I went for a flaming item for the osl source. I'll add more detritus to the base to increase this effect later on.

Josh,

Nice objective. You found a use for those four power relay things from the old boxed set. Mine have been sitting painted like my downed Aquila lander doing nothing for ages.

Cheers,

Is time to start categories for August? Given what’s happening this weekend, I propose “New hotness”; this could cover the latest release, just the newest model you own or a model that represents a rookie or new recruit in your army/gang.

Yep, throw out some ideas and I'll sort a poll later.

As I mentioned in June's thread last night, I'm looking for volunteers to run the vote for this month, and August's round as as a whole, as my eyesight is having way more trouble than I thought and the screen time involved in running these is a bit much for me at the moment. Anyone up for stepping in for a bit?

For years I thought about putting together a light box. After all, you can get good results from a few desk lamps and a box with holes cut out and some parchment paper to difuse the light. Never got around to making one. One year my not-yet-Ex got me a nice one from LimoStudios. Under $50, folds up nice, comes with 2 high output LEDS. Would solidly recommend it to everyone. Helped my photography immensely.

I’d also reccoment a basic photo editing tool like Photoscape X. Free, does things like cropping and white balance, and lets you make nice collages.

It’s made a huge difference in how I showcase minis.

If I understood that correctly, I think it should help if you change ISO and shutter speed when taking the photo. I get the black stripes when either of those are too high.

Absolutely stunning work so far! Good job everyone and good luck for finishing all your entries!

Calling my entry finished now. Leaving for a trip the day after tomorrow, so don't have much time to touch it up anyway.

Went with muted colors, that fit the color scheme with the rest of my army.
I decided against doing OSL for the muzzle effect nor any other fancy techniques, as I had only a week or so to build and paint this entry.
There are some tracks amidst the frozen mud I did using the wheels from the turret carriage, but they are not very visible as there's so much stuff in the base

Awesome work on that gunner team, really tells a story just in the base details, let alone the great paintjob.

Going similarly Kriegy for my entry this month with this DKoK bust I 3d printed . Needed alot of cleanup (even more after the proof pic highlighted some supports I missed) but I've made a start on it tonight and it's coming along very nicely now. Messy Oldmarine for scale, it's around 70mm tall to the top of the helmet .

@paradigm I've had the file for that bust for a while; I must have made half a dozen different slices and still not convinced I'd get a clean print on it. Did you do it all in one piece, or helmet and plinth separate?

Also, hope the eyesight is improving.

One piece print for the torso and head, not sold on the plinth file it comes with so I may find something else to eventually mount it on..Took around 10 hours at 0.12 layer height on an Ender 3, and there was a ton of cleanup in terms of supports, but underneath it's nice and clean, no malformed or broken parts.,

Won't clog this thread with printer talk, but if you want I can PM you with a full breakdown of the settings I used for it.

I now can't decide which 5 of the 40+ guard I've painted this month get photographed for this. Does a weapons team count as 1 model because it is 1 base, or 2 because there are 2 figures on it?

Well, I think a base of rippers or scarabs would be considered one model, and guard are just a step above that. Sounds fine to me.

Whaaaaa that is tiny! respect!
I just got interested in the dropzone recently, and was checking out their armies.
So the pods are huge, but at 6mm, so next to the dropzone vehicles they would look quite comparable.

Never owned anything smaller than historical 72nds though.

Got to paint an entirely new guardian body to go with the arms/weapon (flamer) I've selected because the arms don't fit the body I've painted. Finished Eisenhorn and Cherubael

Eisenhorn's actually my first resin model, and it turns out I'm not really a fan of resin. I didn't do a great job cleaning it up and that didn't become clear until I was painting it. I've got the same problem with the chaplain that was in my proof pic. I'm part way through painting him and still seeing bits of resin I've not cleaned up. I guess I've learned to be more careful if I get another resin model! But hopefully it doesn't show too much in the finished model.

There's some great finished entries so far. Looking forward to voting. And it's been nice doing this again for the first time in maybe 2+ years!

Gutted, but I'm not going to get mine finished.

Today was my last day at work due to covid related redundancies, and I'm just not in a frame of mind to do even mediocre work - which to be fair was all I was expecting this month.

Better start planning next month's mastermind to ensure I only miss one month (luckily being more of the chaotic persuasion means Nevelon's threat of failing the false emperor rolls off my back.... )

Shot for a mix of texture work and a more painterly style evocative of a lot of 40k art, not quite Blanchitsu but heading in that sort of direction.

Good luck everyone!

Sorry, images are huge on dakka dakka when I take them on my S20Ultra.

Friking awesome. I know the gradients are cool , but man those eyes and faces.

Thank you! I'm still really just starting to learn advanced techniques. I also used so much glitter I think i'll never free my workspace of it... those bases are covered in glitter... blurred in the photos but you can almost see.

@Freya, yeah these bases look great as far as I can imagine them behind the blur ... what are the larger crystals, tho? I've been looking for something like this but haven't found anything yet.

(Gradients also turned out super nice!!)

I’ll be putting together the vote thread at some point tomorrow, so you have the time zones working for you. Unless Para wants to crack down and close it, I’m fine stretching things out a bit.

Gutted, but I'm not going to get mine finished.

Today was my last day at work due to covid related redundancies, and I'm just not in a frame of mind to do even mediocre work - which to be fair was all I was expecting this month.

I'm not surprised that you've lost motivation after that, I hope you find something suitable quickly.

Loads of cracking entries again. It's a really high standard once again from everyone.

Slipping these in on the final day. This month has been hectic; home stretch of the MBA (just finished! woo) plus getting my Instagram and YouTube channels up and running (learning Premiere is a pain) has taken up the majority of my time.

These two were to test my Infinity schemes before I painted up something actually ObSec for this contest, but alas didn't manage to get any other models done this month, so they'll have to do.

Proof pic. It's an older one but it'll do.

I mean I don't know much about Infinity, but these guys can take objectives, right?

Is it okay if I post photos tomorrow also? Painting is just about done, but photos aren't going to get done tonight. I can't promise first thing as I have to work around a crazy seven year old. I'll get on it tomorrow and keep you up to date if that is okay?

Please don't go without me!

Given we've had a fair few extension requests, I think we'll just say that any time tomorrow is good, and call it officially to a close on Sunday.

New round will go up tomorrow as usual, but might be a bit later due to time zone differences, so dob't panic if it's not there first thing.

Crystals are from greenstuff world and I used glitter flakes under a 'ardcoat layer. As to the blur, I'm working on getting an actual camera lol. They look so much better in person that it's actually upsetting.

So much great work from so many!

I love those gradients, Freya - I am definitely going to steal that idea some time in the future.

And Modock! Come on, man....give the rest of us a break, huh? That piece is awesome...the graffiti and 3d-printed additions are crazy...it seriously looks like box art material - take that, Angel Giraldez!

I did manage to get finished this month (though half the warband is only blocked in), so here are my Cyper dudes. I love these sculpts so much that I ordered two more boxes of them to try in different colour schemes - something I don't think I have ever done before given the mountain of grey shame I already have in the shed...

Anyhow, here they are...see everyone next month!

Good luck everyone and thanks to Para, MG and Nev for all of their usual hard work!

Well, that was stressful. Had to paint a new model almost from scratch in one day because of my earlier mistake. Didn't get anywhere near doing the terrain piece, and there's loads of stuff I still intend to do on the models in the photos, but this will have to do for now. Multi-craftworld kill team. Craftworlds from the left are: Saim Hann, Stel-Uit, Altansar, Iybraesil and Arach-Qin. All the models have had some conversion, even the saim hann one, although that was just filing off the Ulthwe eye symbol from the helmet. The Altansar one, I actually drilled out the side of the head and modelled the shattered face plate and face underneath. Hope it comes across okay...

Aaaand now I can collapse.

Okay, sorry about the delay. Here are the final photos of my Assault Intercessors.

These sculpts are fantastic, really dramatic and cinematic, and they would probably be a lot of fun to paint if you aren't battling a deadline and up until 3am finishing them like I was. I like how, in the photos, it looks like they're running back and forth in all directions.
