Are there any models, or units that you would like to see update/back? @ 2020/09/05 05:42:07

Post by: Oborosen

I don't know what it is about thinking on this, but I've been going over a few items in the past few days and realized that GW has pretty much left so many in the past. That it's rather hard to come to terms with what it was that I really wanted to put up here.

Though I can think of one. Seeing as I started back to playing in 6th, after being away in the military. The very first army I picked up was a Chaos war band of Red Corsairs. With Blackheart being my first character at the time. Who was already being primed up for the release of 7th and even though I'd seen stats for his Astral Claws build. I was really interested in building a fast attack group at the time, with bikes and missile launchers. Using what little I could acquire for myself at the time and only when a hobby shop open almost an hour away. I was finaly able to actually outfit my army with some farm more powerful models.

I would love to see Huron be recast and get a stat update. Because he was such a powerful unit when it came to his Astral Claws variant and now he just seems rather gimped. Despite being a lord in his own right and supposedly Abbadon's greatest completion, besides Typhus.

As a Guard player: Rough Riders. Provides an inexpensive (compared to Kreig) Cavalry/early World War I itch whilst providing an inexpensive Fast Attack option that also gives more utility than the Turret/Blocker that current Sentinels give.

Invictus is "dead" but I'd like to see rules for Agemman especially now that there is a Plasma Blaster to kit bash with.

I liked Telion better as a Scout Squad upgrade rather than an IC.

I liked the Command Squads as 1 choice that maybe didn't even cost a FOC better than as 3+ Elites FOC's that always do. Letting a Command Squad type play FOC games with Champions, Apothecaries, or (some) other Elite choice single model infantry might solve that.

Sapphon should make a comeback.

Uriel Ventris. For that matter, any "character" in a Black library Novel that would/could have an entry in the codex, should have a datasheet in the back of the novel. So the Ultramarines squads should have an entry, but the Everyman miner from the world being over run who proves his mettle but isn't a guardsman or even a squad shouldn't.

Nor should they necessarily be materially different from what you could make if you guessed right about what each person had/did or have special rules.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
One added thought, I'd like to see a new Captain Tycho. The guy "died" before the first Primaris Marine hit the field. They need a new captain that won't give people continuity headaches if he's on the field with a Primaris marine.

Another thumbs up for Rough Riders - always regretted not having some in my army back in the 90s.

Also, Squats. Seriously, WTF has happened to 40k in the last 25 years?? I bought some from Macrocosm recently and they're fantastic.

Ork cyborks!! They used to be the bodyguard for the painboy in 3rd edition, which was an HQ.

T5 1W 5++ like they were in 3rd, they could have their niche in the elites section.

Named characters like Zogworth, Wazzdakka and Nazdreg would be amazing as well and orks are currently lacking named psykers, bikers and warbosses that aren't primarch sized anyway.

Minderz! I loved the idea of two orks dragging around a Weirdboy who wanted nothing more than getting the hell out of there.

GW are bringing back alot of older models and even races so its a good time to hope.

Necromunda Scavs, Muties and Ratskins - seem to be all still curent in the lore going by the recent Kal Jerico novel.
All the missing Dark Elder characters
Cyborks and Cyboars would be fun
I still have my Tinboyz so that would be a bit of laugh.

Love to see it but "no model, no rules" BS - except where it doesn;t - see Grandmaster Baby Carrier.

Well, I'll start with the 3 that affect me the most....
1) Squats - for the past 20 years my squats have been biding their time, serving as another Guard regiment in my collection. 8th though provided me the option of souping in SM to make (more) proper use of my exo-armour & bikes/trikes. One of these days though a true squat army will return....

2) I'd really like my Las/plas Razorback turrets returned.

3) Rough Riders

After that? Anything from FW that I own that doesn't currently have rules. I have some Tyranid terrain that comes to mind, but I'm sure I've got some Guard vehicles that've faded away.

I'd like to see the old crazy rules for Orks return. Once upon a time Orks had a good dose of random effects. Over the editions Orks have gotten blander & blander, suffereing mightily for it.

Battlefleet Gothic, Mordheim, a proper version of Man O' War, a proper version of Epic, Warmaster, Inquisitor (at either "28mm" or the original 54mm scale).

There may be others, but those spring to mind as missing Specialist Games.

Tyranids - updates to the Pyrovore and Biovore into plastic (likely as a 3 models in one box duel kit)

Deathleaper and Lictor in plastic - again a duel kit with 3 in one box.

Spikerifles and such for gaunts - also a good excuse to update the gaunt sprue so that we no longer have split in half heads!!

As for models lost to the depths of time, even though I don't play them, Rough Riders! I'm still surprised GW removed and didn't replace these!

Also bring back most of those Forgeworld fantasy models that got dropped. Magama Dragon, Wolfrats, Warpfire Dragon. So many great models were lost this last Christmas :(

There are a lot of classic kits I’d like to see re-cut and updated, instead of having more new stuff added.

The Banshee’s were a nice start, but the other aspects need an update. They look fine, but need to be in plastic. The grav tanks could all be consolidated into one box with how they do sprues these days. Design doesn’t need to change, but the detail is soft and you tell the mold is aging.

Marine box dreadnoughts is another one. I don’t need a new potbellied overgunned dread that kills it’s pilot. Angry. Washing. Machine. Again, they could probably consolidate a number of boxes with modern tech. And if you are going to keep one kit from the non primaris range, the dread should be it from a lore perspective. Flesh and blood will either die in combat or cross the rubicon, but the walking dead endure.

Space Marine Commander. The kit is old. But it let you make your commander. Not some monopose guy that’s leading every army. with so many options. I want him updated (even if it’s to primaris) because if they bring him up to date, that would be a sign they are getting rid of the no model no rules nonsense that’s a damper on the hobby side.

There is a huge amount of finecast that just needs a port to plastic. We don’t want replacements with some new unit that does something kinda similar. We want the classics in a material that doesn’t suck.

I've been thinking about this a bit lately. The reason I haven't started Orks, Guard or Eldar (again) is because of the ancient models. Especially when it comes to troops. Why oh why can't GW just do a full set of infantry boxes like the Necromunda sets for the main guard regiments? Or get the damned Pheonix Lords and Aspect warriors updated. Some of those models are more than a quarter of a century-old!!!

A fleshed out noise marine model line. I am not a chaos supporter, but i would get, say 500-750p of noise marines if they existed. a few 3rd party models exists i know, but you know GW; if it aint made by us, dont eve think about it

Yes! Or at least a damn upgrade kit that we can get, like back with the space wolves, or vanguard selections.

Hell, I'm going to make an addendum to my thread.

I want to see Defilers get their specific upgrades.

Debasers, Slaughterfiends, Deceivers and Desecrators.

I think it's because GW wants to pass off their AOS merchandise as some form of upgrade, or direct conversion kit. Because that's all that I've ever seen run as possible Berserker units.

That's a nice idea. Imagine going out and picking up a box of guardsman, that numbers more than 20, or at least has some more reasonable options.
When GW started popping out 5 man boxes of Cultist and Guard. My first thought was that it was an extremely unnecessary move... and stupid.

Who want's to buy a box that contains only a partial measure of your squad?
Doubly so for cultist. Especially when you could have over 40 units in a squad.

Yes, give the remaining Chaos God devoted Legions their favored troops in modern sculpts.

And then something for the Undivided Legions: give us Chosen. Make them look like true Veterans of The Long War, not renegades who just signed up to the Black Legion last week. Put them in Mark III, IV, and V armour, maybe even Mark II. Make them look like ancient warriors, whose armour is stained with the blood of a thousand worlds, who have sailed the seas of hell, who saw the Gates of Terra shake before them. Give us True Legionnaires!

And, of course, give them conversion kits for each of the Undivided Legions.

Nope. Can't say it.
I never liked the DOWNgrade kit they got, so as far as I'm concerned they haven't had models since the awesome 2nd ed metals (the recent "reboot" mini is amazing, but hardly usable for an entire squad).

Hah! I love the visual. Not sure how viable that'd be on the tabletop, though. They'd be more expensive than your average Guardsman, but still with just lasguns... hmm. Maybe jump-pack Tempestus Scions, or similar...?

The guy at the back clearly also has a plasmagun.

Besides, Guard don't need jump packs as long as their officers can shout at normal troopers to run faster than aircraft

Some of the ork superheavies from Epic would be wonderful to see in 40K. So many fun, silly options that would let them fill the heavy vehicle gap that's currently in the ork lineup. If they're dead set on making the stompa garbage.

That said, the difference between the new warriors and the raveners (or the old warriors) is not very much. Mostly just a super crappy paint job.

I mean those are a given...box exclusive minis are the worst business practice ever.
I'm still waiting for those 3 big chunky boys from the Kill Team Rogue Trader and the Chaos Ogryn from Blackstone Fortress Traitor Guard sets, as there is nothing comparable out there.
I also only bought the CSM start collecting box BECAUSE of the exclusives, even though it turns out that I am happy with the whole purchase, but that is a coincidence and wouldn't apply to the other mentioned boxes here.

Speaking of Nids, I'm going to give a controversial one -- upscaled Hive Tyrants/Carnifexes. Those two models are incredibly iconic and bada** staples of the army, and size creep has left them looking less intimidating than they should. I guess I'd be okay if they kept the scale the same, but amped them up in the rules... either way, both need to be truly frightening.

Then of course, there are some Nids with perfectly beautiful sculpts that are nowhere near as scary as they need to be... but we don't need to talk about that...

I think it would be nice to see update in size termintor models. But other armies need their stuff update more, so I am in no rush for new stuff.

if GW made a personal teleporter interceptor character, it would be really cool, but for that GW would need 2 years developing it and making a new GK codex .

For Orks:

Looted wagons. I want russes, I want grav-tanks, i want all of 'em! It would be perfectly sensible to let them run as orks, for the same points, with ork ballistic skill and no special rules. sell more codexes, get more cool ork models, it's all winning.

Battlefortresses. Again, GW's sales team obviously didn't notice the drop in sales for baneblades when Orks lost their skullhammas, battlefortesses and the like. seriously guys, Ork players will build it all out of your kits anyway, just give us some rules!

Stompas need a hefty price adjustment and rules going-over.

Squigs, Squiggoths, and all the other lovely monsters! Orks should be breeding the biggest, scariest beasties from any world they find, and using it to kill dem 'oomies! I'd love to see a Feral Orks section for Orks which would add some squiggoth variants, and maybe some other beasties being ridden, Ork Dok Experiments of modified Orks. Perhaps call it an "Ork Outkasts" supplement with mad doks, deranged meks, cyborks, squigoths, cybork squiggoths, super-orks, etc.

I don't really want to see upscaled - Tyranids are a nightmare to pack as it is with all the big things

That said one thing I do see as a potential opening for future revamps of the Tyranids is the size of arms and limbs. I've really noticed how chunky scything talons and such are. Compared to many blades and swords from other races the Tyranids are running around with railroad metal rather than scything blades. I could see them get a huge reworking whereby Gaunts become thinner and more, well, gaunt; whilst some of the more chunky would then appear properly "thick and big" without even much of a size update.

Personally I reckon Hive Tyrants and Carnifexes SHOULD get a size boost. But I'd be happy to see other things like Exocrines or Haruspexs shrink to counter it.
As mentioned, they really should be the scariest things the force can put on the table.

This might be my bias to old Epic scale showing, but I disagree - Exocrines and Haruspex were larger than both the 'fex and the Tyrant back in t'day, and should stay that way.

Pretty happy with the Tyrant's size myself. For the carnifex, the size isn't really the issue, its more the pose and overall look.

Its time to accept that its a bottom-tier monster, so should be one of the smaller ones. But the current design is... eh. Though a lot of the newer designs are worse, imo. GW rarely makes tentacles and squiggly bits that aren't giggle-worthy.

I agree, the Carnifex used to be the biggest, but then again the Dreadnought also used to be the biggest. I don't think they need scaling up because we already have those bigger things. Instead we have two models that are smaller, but shine because they can be jacks of any trade rather than the bigger beasts that tend to specialise far more so.

When you put a fex on the table people fear it; but they should be cowering when you put an exocrine or haurspex down.

I love the size of my Hive Tyrant right now, it fits into the image of a compact, extremely dangerous, commander figure that 'lurks' on the battlefield but is still monstrous enough to rip a man apart without a second thought. Stuff that gets big starts to feel more brutish.

Also, bigger size means bigger base, probably more powerful melee weapons and wounds count. It would be harder to maneuver and cost more points.

How about this. Keep the current Tyranid monster at their level, but included a new "pimaris carnifex" to serve as a larger, size brute-style close combat monster. We could even re-use the term Screemer-Killer for these.

But we have those already.
Haurspex, Exoctine, Malceptor, Toxicrene, Ravener etc....
Those are the big "primaris" style upgrades of the carnifex. Granted they sacrifice some of its versatility for a more focused weapon loadout, but they offer bigger size and more power. If you push the Carny into that realm too then one of the two has to take a step out - either the specialists or the generalist. Otherwise its needless duplication.

Back when the Carnifex was the "biggest", it was the Land Raider that was the "biggest". The Dreadnought was great though.

Imo the Carnifex isn't scary enough. But that doesn't require a model change, just a stat/ability boost. Make it T8, 2+ 10+W and S8. Add an optional regeneration ability and then we're getting somewhere.

I'd like to see all of the finecast replaced with pewter again, I keep having to rely on Ebay for the cooler parts of my secondary armies (Kommandos and Tankbusts come to mind). If I ever collect an Eldar army, I reckon it'll mostly be secondhand from Ebay

The Juan Diaz Daemons all look much better than all of the current lesser Daemon models, though those models are much more customizable nowadays. If we could get the Diaz models in plastic with posable waists, arms and heads that would be awesome.

Also most of the Forgeworld OOP stuff should come back too, but that'll never happen.

One of the main thing I really want to see updated is the size of Ork Nobz/MegaNobz and Warbosses.

It is kind of sad to see Primaris being bigger than a Warboss, who should be a 3 metre tall monstrosity.

IMO there's nothing wrong with the size of the Carnifex model, it just needs better rules. A couple of attacks at S6 is nothing compared to the your-tank-dies-instantly mangling that the Carnifex of old could dish out. It's still a plenty chunky model; if you want a LoW or Knight equivalent, that's what the Hierodule is for.

Another vote here for the return of Rough Riders. It was another choice to help break up the monotony of Guard, added a rare melee option, rounded out the Fast Attack slot (seriously, Hellhound variants and Sentinel variants is not a lot of variety), and was a nice option for infantry-focused armies.

Also, it might not be what OP is after, but I'd love to see a return of Lost And The Damned or Renegades & Heretics. They were both fun lists that provided the sorely-missing 'Chaos minions' force.

I have to confess that I'm actually a bit scared of rules updates to existing minis because that will probably lead to more monopose and higher prices. And especially for more horde-y units, that will look awful with a dozen of the same guy/gribbly in the same dynamic pose.

But we do need our Rough Riders back!

Battlefleet Gothic, Mordheim, a proper version of Man O' War, a proper version of Epic, Warmaster, Inquisitor (at either "28mm" or the original 54mm scale).

There may be others, but those spring to mind as missing Specialist Games.

You forgot Dreadfleet. Don't worry, everyone else did too. I only remembered it because I still have a Dreadfleet poster I got for free .

I was thinking of Dreadfleet as a one-and-done boxed set, rather than a full-fledged Specialist Game with expansions. I mean, I didn't include Space Hulk, which would fall into the same category (though I want an expansion for it with the WD campaigns from when I first started with GW, so ~WD190 and onwards).

I did miss Gorkamorka, though you can argue that's a variant setting for Necromunda.

I want to get an actual "Sniper" unit in the game that isn't an assassin. Give the IG sniper rifle S6 and make it D2 damage, with character targeting rules. The SM sniper rifles are already d3 or d3 depending on the type, and have character targeting. Hell, make it a strat. But I would love for my Tanith themed Sniper Teams with Larkin to be viable for once, and I think S6 guns with character targeting would be great.

Tbh Huron's model wasn't even great when he was released si I understand it didn't age well... compared to the sweet FW Huron that is as beautiful as ever.

Otherwise Pariah necrons, obviously.
And elysian guards.

Ill second rough riders. They could even be cheap and base it on the Genestealer motorbike unit.

For me I would love to have a big multiguard greatcoat kit. Based on the amazing Battle Sisters box I can definitely see them making a greatcoat infantry box with heads for Steel Legion, Valhallans, and Vostroyans with lots of weapons.

Additionally you could EASILY make a new box for basic infantry that is Cadian based that can have alternate heads for a new regiment or even one with simpler body needs (like tallarn, I.E. a head with scarf that goes over the shoulders lego style) as well as Veterans heads and weapon options.

My only problem with them is they don't have character Targeting. Let me just say this, I wish it was easier to Role-play a character sniper in game.

Honestly, I play Custodes, and the only unit in a faction of literal tactical and strategic geniuses that can shoot a character is the Terminators. Somehow Valarian and Trajaan missed out on the lesson where shooting the guy with the big shiny rank and silly hat turns the table of the fight drastically. Hell, shouldn't every "Elite" be able to snipe important characters? I hate how for some reason the 9 foot ork shouting orders to the relatively smaller orks is somehow not targetable unless you kill every ork in the vicinity.

Those are more of an antimateriel rifle than a sniper rifle.

Anyway, the problem with sniper rifles is probably a problem with characters. Because of character's general profiles of having a lot of wound, a weapon that can kill a character is also a pretty good AT weapon.

I think that if we want to see effective sniper team units, there'd have to be a serious look at the relationship the game has with hero units first.

One of my cousins has his entire Cadian force use Sniper Rifles as their Special Weapon, so:
Infantry Squad - Sergeant with Laspistol, 6 Lasguns, Sniper Rifle, Heavy Weapons team.
Special Weapons Squad - 3 Lasguns, 3 Sniper Rifles
Command Squad - 4 Sniper Rifles
Veterans - Sergeant with Laspistol, 3 Sniper Rifles, Heavy Weapons team

You know how irritating it is to play against all those damn Sniper Rifles? Especially if they reroll 1's with the Cadian trait (and the squads with 3 or more getting ordered: Take Aim! to get full hit rerolls).

For a 2pt upgrade they sure are paying for themselves easily!

I wanna run that, but swapping sniper rifles for flamers, loaded up in Chimeras with max flamers.

My answer is and will always be Cato Sicarius.

The resin one is awesome, main reason I chose Ultramarines. I've gotten a lot better at painting since I picked him up originally and I'd love to get a newer one to paint

Maybe updated OG marines, specifically a new multipart beaky kit.

Hmm.. a relic kit maybe?

comes with enough parts to modify a full tactical squad and make it all mark 3 gear, or around that same collection.

They do have character targeting.

And yea, i agree that character targeting is dumb.

On topic: i'd like to see the Mechanicum units ported to 40k

Doomrider... Bike HQ's for Chaos space marines... Noise Marines... I actually liked the old possessed models more than the new ones, and if they could just make Gal Vorbak from the horus heresy into the possessed of 40k that would be amazing... From model design all the way to performance on the table top.

meh as someone that rewrote the R&H index.. it's a bit more then that, and some fringe occaisons need to be looked at for balance reasons, but it'd be a job of about 2 days tops, in ruleswriting and about a week of dedicated playtesting?

Then you didn't see the 7th Corsairs book b.c it LITERALLY ALREADY HAD TRAITS AND WAS SET UP LIKE 8TH CODICES. There are something like 20 fan made codices out right now (I even have one) b.c most of it was already set up, basically the art and story is all that is needed and converting the stats that DE/CWE already did.

How has this managed to reach 4 pages without anybody mentioning The Avatar of Khaine.

He should rightly be the most important unit in an Eldar Armylist.

Give him the same steroids that GW juiced the Greater Daemons with, a couple of weapons options (spear/sword/maybe something new) and let him go to town.

Sure the Forgeworld one is nice but the Sword version is now OOP; i wouldn't be suprised if the same thing happens to the Spear option. As for his metal/finecast release, the sculpt is fast approaching 30 years old. He arguably needs a new plastic model more than any other unit in the game.

I think it's because he's gotten so many other options from a conversion standpoint than anyone else at this point. You have about three options from AOS and even the FW model is still in production as well.

If he did get a new plastic model. I really hope they drop several new variations on him, other then the Wailing Doom.
He's also seen some more play in the last two editions, especially 7th & 8th.

On the premise of giving the old boy some new, much needed life. I'll wholeheartedly second giving him that boost.

At that point. I think it becomes more of an issue on what's supported by GW and openly run by the fan base.
I myself am all for fan-run rules, so long as they are accepted by the players. Because I would never have survived through some editions in those exact same cases.

But for me, when it comes to DE. I'd like to see a few more models get their overhauls done. Because the Craft worlds got most of their own units updated and even with the Ynnari getting such a large release. Most people just felt that the DE got shafted on what they could field. No real power to the Archons, iffy, or entirely pigeonholed troops. Though their poisoned weapons have always been a nice strength. I can name more than a few time that I've been put against a Dark Eldar player and their toughness would fail them more often than it should have.

Maybe a rework of POP, or Combat Drugs perhaps?

Give me his 4th edition model any day. I don't know what it is, but I utterly hate banners on my models. Unless it's a Warboss, or some other big gaudy thing like that. I usually tend to keep them off and use them for spares somewhere else. But in his case, it was also his sword being so close to his body and the fact that he was still holding his helmet at the time.

He always looked more at home being a display model and not a war-game model.

Why was this unit discontinued? It is a beautiful sculpt.

That is indeed an amazing model. I'm somewhat comforted by the fact that it can still make for a suitable Farseer, though (minus the issue of not having a visible witch weapon without conversion).
I suspect the reason for its discontinuation is that it really didn't do that much on the tabletop compared to Farseers, Warlocks and Spiritseers - hence, I don't see an awful lot of Eldar players having picked one up.

I know, one should still take a look at it though but that is because i have seemingly higher standard expectations to what drivel GW releases...

And corsairs would make an amazing faction regardless, heck one could even include other fringe elements to that faction from eldar society and get a really nice faction that would certainly fill in better then what GW did with ynnari..

I really hope that the Avatar gets the same treatment as the Greater Daemons.

I mean, if the damned Vermin Lord can get 13 variants in the same box, we can get one giant Avatar of Khaine to smash things up.

I don't know about general release, but it did go through a M2O cycle when they did one for Eldar - I picked one up as a birthday or Christmas present for a friend of mine who plays Eldar.

I was always under the impression it was online only. But because this was circa mid 2000's GW, it never sold that well due to the internet still being dark and spooky to them at that point; plus its lack of rules, despite it being perfectly serviceable as literally any Eldar psyker.

I seem to recall it being released around the same time as a load of other "display" type minis, like the Squig chase and the Empire Warrior Priest blessing the handgun, all of which disappeared PDQ too.

EDIT- Yes, it was Webstore only. The Army Box mini was this Autarch

The Bonesinger becomes an interesting option should we see Eldar terrain become a thing.

Mind you, they've always had a role as a "repair vehicles/constructs" character, when you think about it.

Maybe they should receive a few utility abilities for wraith-both constructs?

Re-rolls on misses, d3 wounds instead of just the 1, or even allowing them to move and fire at full BS. It doesn't matter, so long as they can do a few more things and their points represents that. Even throwing in a few CPs that could be taken with them would be a nice touch.

The Tech-marine has always been rather lackluster in much the same way and now that the conversion beamer has been lost to a few of them. You don't see such units fielded as much anymore.

I don't play nids but I really think they should get shrikes back with a statline like warriors that must pick a set of either ranged or special melee weapons in exchange for fly and a 12" movement range, could be made into a biker or jump pack analogue that could be good this edition for flying out fast to take objectives and ignoring obstacles while being tougher to kill then units like gargoyles

I run a bonesinger regularly in 8th (before dang legends..)

He is a nifty little character thats not a HQ(yay) that could either smite or heal D3 wounds to stuff.. And then consider two of these zipping around healing wave serpents
Unfortunately legends put an end to that... :(

Indeed Bonesinger is a perfect unit to get some love. Really hope they re-introduce him and he could have some unique utility.

I did mention the AOK. The problem is I think it would have to be superior to the FW verion which is going to be tricky to pull off.

It's no surprise that GW is going to nearly force everyone who plays Eldar. To purchase that FW model, just to have a certain model in their army.

Almost everyone has gotten more than enough love over the last two releases, especially daemons, and now even Necrons are getting into the mix.

How about I toss in requesting a conversion kit, so that my dread knights don't look like Baby Carriers of doom?
