Welcome all to the 113th round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.
This month the topic is: Footslogger - Sometimes the best way to get somewhere is putting one foot in front of the other. No fancy bikes or tanks. No fancy horses or winged monsters. Just the poor infantry with a good pair of boots. Getting where you need to go and getting things done. Taking ground and holding it. These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do...
How To Enter
- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You may enter at any time during the month, up to the last minute. We do encourage people to enter early, as to be part of the community, but if you can’t start until the 11th hour, that’s OK.
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of July and will end at midnight EST on July 31st. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Keeping on the female theme above, I think I have an old metal Howling Banshee Exarch to prime and paint.
Cheers,

PS: Then I remembered I had an extra Dark Reaper Exarch...so I figured I would take advantage of the contrast of black and white.

Can I ask your indulgence good people of Dakka?
I got these dilapidated plastic dwarves off eBay like this and I don’t want to bother stripping them or over-spraying them. Can I just call this primed and set about trying to make these guys look worthy of the painting challenge? Or is this just setting a bad precedent for future challenges?
Alternatively I could also find a female biped.

The question is how much of that is going to be in the finished product?
If you intend just to paint over the whole mini, so none of the pre-exisiting paint will show (or like 90% of it) just not strip/prime, it would be fine. What you start with is not a head start for the finished product, as it’s going to be all replaced.
If you are going to clean up/touch up/refine what’s there, I think that is a little too far away from “primed one color” which should be the baseline.

I’m not loving the blue and yellow vibe but the flesh and the metal on the weapons probably are more touch-up areas. I’ll maybe just entered something else anyway. I’ll see how I go.
It’s kinda more that I need to get these painted soonish.

My entry for this month will be Solar Auxilia infantry, painted as a French army from steampunk WW I to accompany my french Sentinel from the "Nice ride" contest. I'm still thinking if they would look better in light blue uniforms, or with the famous red pants from the beginning of the war.

Acceptable?
I actually had the blue bits based in Fenris grey but then the blue ink just blued them back up. It’s for a skirmish game rather than an army game so the rest will be all sorts of individual colours.
Fun fact, Dwarfs didn’t actually wear helmets with horns on. That was just something GW did to give them more character.

All entries should be 5 models. I assume that if people are paining more then that they are going to choose the best 5 for the final entry.
The model cap is one we occasionally waive. And little accessories (like mascots or teleport homers and the like) while technically another model get a free pass.

In that case I'll only enter the ones actually on foot, cutting the squigrider and the one composed of two grots standing on top of eachother as one of them technically isn't on foot when being carried by another either.
I want to always stay as close to the theme as possible.

If you have the minis, and nothing else fits the theme, and you can prime them . . .
Maybe you can paint . . . the A-Team.
Been a while since I've entered a comp., but I'll through my hat in the ring with these models from Crooked Dice.
I also bought a resin version of B.A.'s van, but it's not exactly the right scale for the models (about 80-90% big enough), and then they wouldn't be on foot either.

Those are just the basic 'Barbed Bracken' GW does. Good little set, they're very thin but the plastic is flexible and springy, I can't see them taking damage from anything that wouldn't just pulverise the miniature anyway. The website says to use superglue on them, but I hadn't bothered checking that when I assembled the mini and just used plastic cement, and they seem pretty firmly anchored. It's pricey of course, but I'm too lazy to go looking for cheaper options online, and since I'm only using it for one-offs like this, not a whole army, the four sprues in the box are probably going to last the rest of my hobby life.

Setaris Ravagers- not so much footsloggers as tail / wing sloggers! Nasty scavenging alien Dinos, from Brimstone but also ideal for 2000AD, Stargrave, you name it.
And having found a bit of mojo, some colour!

Halfway through the month, but I can see quite a few others are only just starting too, so I reckon I've got no excuses not to join in...
I was planning to finally put together some Death Korps veterans for Kill Team, but I looked at the sprues, and how many pieces they were in, and basically lost the will to live. So I've put them back on the shelf.
I've dug out an old 1/35th scale Maschinen Kreiger SAFS toy instead. I saw these at Salute a while back, when South London Warlords ran a big display game using loads of them. So I bought some, and, like 99% of my planned projects, put them in a box and ignored them.
But I've found one, and it was a bit broken, but fixable.
I chopped it up a bit, to repose the legs, to give it a bit of movement:
Then I glued on a few bits and bobs, and slapped on some putty:
I always think of SAFS as being fairly slow, plodding, lumbering things, so hopefully it fits the 'Footsloggers' theme OK. Now I just have to decide on a colour scheme, and go crazy with over-the-top weathering!
cheers,
Michael

Great work, Captain Brown! Love that axe-head!
That Tomb King's looking good too, Zergsmasher - classic colours! I feel maybe a pale blue-grey wash would go well on the flesh, and help tie it into the rest of the colourscheme?
I've been cracking on well with the SAFS thingy... I'm trying a new weathering technique, where you basically do all the rust first, then paint over it. We'll see how it goes!
Basecoated with black, then oversprayed with a tan brown. I figured that'd be a good base for the rust.
Then I just went crazy with the rust paints!
Hopefully the next stage will tone it down a bit...

Michael

If it's suggestion time, I've got a couple (that totally aren't things I've assembled but haven't started painting yet so it'd be convenient):
I Understood That Reference! - Something about this mini and/or how it's painted is a nod to something else. It might be built in from the start like Sly Marbo or Mad Donna, homemade like an Ork Flyboy wearing aviators because he feels da need fer speed, or just take your word for it like a scout with a shotgun he calls his Boomstick or a Wych with blond hair because this Barbie is queen of the fighting pits. Dakkadakka, their brushes ready.
Beep Boop - Villains who are more machine than man, or your plastic pal who's fun to be with (unless he's feeling very depressed). Doesn't have to be bleeding-edge quantum computing in a body made from pure unobtainium, to our distant descendants on feral worlds clockwork and a steam engine could've been enough to turn a hunk of scrap into a metal beast. Robots, cyborgs, labour-saving devices or smart weapons.

Normally I don’t like topics that are genre locked. “Can this be fantasy/modern/sci-fi?” Is a yardstick I apply to everything. Beep boop is a little hard to get into fantasy. We could widen it out in the description to silly little things making silly little noises, which could catch familers, animal companions, fey things. But that’s a bit pf a stretch.
That said, it seems to be getting traction, so I’ll put it in the poll. Which I’m going to try to get up after work today, so keep the ideas coming.

Footslogger matches my army theme better than any other comp theme ever, but somehow, I spent the first week of this month groping for inspiration.
Then I left town for a week. In the day that I had back at home, lightning struck and I assembled this guy.
Then I left town for another week. I finished up the greenstuffing (this is more of a conversion than a kitbash, since these two kits don't really bash) last night and primed him today. So I'm in but with precious little hobby time left in the month with which to paint him.
At least he's a real "foot"slogger (unlike you feetsloggers):

Face is about 80% of the way there. Looks good enough on the table and any improvements from here on out will require serious time commitment.
B. A. is partly done, Hannibal and Murdock are barely more than base coated. I'm hoping taking some pictures motivates me a little.
And then there's the whole problem of bases . . .

Right I’m happy with this fella. Got a whole ton of Deathwing to tackle at some point in the future (after various other projects) so thought I would try out my general ideas on this guy; a ‘mini of the month’ from my local GW store not long ago.
Very happy with the result to be honest. It was primarily achieved with layering ultra thin paint with a stippling technique and I found the whole process super relaxing and easy to achieve. The weathering was done with sponge chipping and the odd hand painted scratch and from then on it was simply a case of painting in the details; which was by far the most time consuming part.

Sorry guys I've not been around much to comment on things, its been a busy few months.
I started this month by making and undercoating some Witch Hunters for this challenge as they always seem to be on foot but part way through the month I had a change of heart and quickly knocked out a few Bretonnia Peasant Bowmen after randomly watching the Kenneth Branagh Henry V Saint Crispin's Day speech, I thought they fitted the theme better (both them footslogging around after the nobility and also in an Agincourt type sense with some muddy battlefields firing volleys into the incoming men at arms) and I was interested in painting them on a long base.
and here they are, a happy few.

A little close, but done, some Oathsworn Miniatures critters from Lovejoy's latest kickstarter:
Proof:
And finished:
Didn't figure out what the little bit on the shield below the hourglass is, (maybe its holding strap?), and not painted up to Lovejoy's standards for here, but still fun to get back to the line all the same.

While running out, still some time left. Time to wrap up the procrastination and get to work! Grab some good pics to make sure you have the best angle in good light.
If anyone needs an extension let me know.

I dunno, I might be done in time. It's very hot here at the moment and I have no air conditioning, so painting is a bit of a struggle.

No problem, extension granted. So everyone has until the end of the first. Or more realistically when I’m at my computer early on the 2nd having my coffee before work.
Stay frosty!

Thanks - I was going to ask as well. I have a research paper for a class for my Master's degree due tomorrow. I've been giving myself painting breaks when I achieve progress, but I have to knuckle down and write another ~1500 words. Not going to be much painting in the next 36 hours.

I wonder how long an essay you can write on purity seals? Some models have a lot of real estate. Or for the more chaoticly minded, you could enscribe your thesis on a word bearers land raider or titan.
Academic needs are no excuse to stop painting!

Ahem! Landraider would not fit the theme of foot slogger (though you could probably argue for a titan and have plenty of room for that thesis on the pauldrons )

Sorry, got caught up in the idea for using miniatures as a writing medium. LRs are right out. Titans it is.

I’ve switched my entry. The A-Team is too much to chew in the time crunch. I want to do them the service they deserve, and I am still struggling to figure out the bases and I want it to be good. The only thing I’ve figured out is I’m putting a box of Trash Bags! on Murdock’s base.
I’ll post a proof pic soonish. It’s a bit out of the box, but I think it’s going to work out. I’m not writing my paper on the model, but I am going to put something in there about it. I like the way you think, Nevelon.

Hey Nev, this is looking really good. Is that Scale 75 Decayed Metal you've used on the aquila?

Nope.
Mechanicum standard grey base
Leadbelcher drybrush
Nuln oil wash
Little touchup highlighting with the leadbelcher (sometimes I’ll use a brighter silver if I have it open)

Grey first with a leadbelcher drybrush? Interesting...
I usually paint leadbelcher, then Nuln and then a light leadbelcher drybrush.
I'm gonna have to try your technique just to see the results firsthand, Nevelon.

I have a few ways I do silvers.
Black with silver drybrush, no wash (bolters, guns, marine belts)
Grey/silver drybrush/wash (trooper skulls aqilas, terminator honors)
Silver with wash (eldar infantry weapons, DW arms and shoulderpads)
The results are similar, but a little different. Not sure if I have a model with all 3 teqniques.

I'll tell you a simple metallic that looks good, i was doing some chainmail on Chaos Knight barding and just painted it a dark muddy brown then one light drybrush of Gun-metal. It looks 400x better than it has any right to and chainmail in particular is now a solved issue for me.
Also well shoot looks like i'm going to have to miss this one. I made some decent progress early on but i've been giving basing, weathering and some minor scheme elements a rethink for the force as a whole and don't want to progress the unit past where they are. Also i am waiting on a couple paints/basing products.

Decided to do a last minute entry with a few Hunters from the Bloodborne boardgame.
I have tried to enter these models for a challenge some months / half a year ago. Rather, I did post a proof picture back then, but did not manage to get them done.
So here's another go.
This time I painted the three hunters that only had the primer on and left the two that had some paint on them untouched (and left them out of the final pictures).
Proof from my messy "on the go" setup from our gaming room. The ones I painted are the rightmost three.
Edit: the proof picture is two weeks old (the most keen eyed of you can see the "Centerpiece" entry in the works there). Most of the painting was done during a couple of remote meetings and over the last few nights.
Final pictures.
"Spartans of the Church". The foot soldiers of the Healing Church, fighting against the Beast Scourge on the streets of Yharnam.
I was a bit conflicted with these models.
Bloodborne is maybe my favorite video game of all time, but the details on these were a bit fuzzy at times. Quite fun to paint though!

Honestly, I'm just happy I managed to get this painted in time. That was an achievement in itself.
Well done everyone!

So I got one guy done. Better then zero. Lost a week to vacation, and life is up to its tricks again. I put him and his mates together for the prior edition. He was the recon/scout guy. Hence the auspex, pointing out targets, and the phobos shoulderpad.
Anyway, done now.

More flies and moths, though... my fan seems to be keeping them away for the moment, fortunately.
However, I'm a bit stymied. I'm trying to come up with a logo to freehand onto some shields. It's for an Order aligned warband, who I was intending to call the Bloodbound. I was going to just use a bloody handprint style logo, but I've gone off that idea. Thing is, I can't seem to come up with anything else.
The idea behind the warband is that they come from all different factions (though the three I'm painting right now are all freeguild) and are tied together by fate - and possibly some higher power pulling strings. All of the members have had visions of their own deaths while fighting alongside their warband comrades, so they all think they're in this warband just to die at some important time - though some are actively trying to change their fate.
The logo needs to be pretty simple as I need to be able to free hand it quickly. Something to do with blood/fate/death etc. Automatically Appended Next Post: Okay, I've given up. If possible, I'd love a second extra day to get them finished, but if not, don't worry, I'll bow out of this month.

Alright. I managed to finish an entry.
Proof:
It was base coated with a black wash. Hopefully that doesn't go too far past the "primed or coated a single colour" rule of the competition. Do the rust effects and freehand graffiti push it far enough along to ignore the wash?
I'm submitting a piece of terrain. How is this a footslogger you ask? Well, take a look.
Foot:
Slog:
-Ers:
Also, the other side:
From an angle:
It doesn't have any purity seals, or lots of text on the hull, but the names and tags that aren't specifically theme related are sources/authors I referenced in my paper.

Just finished painting, didn't manage to do any freehand on the shields. Just need to whack some grass tufts on the bases, but I need to go eat...
Here's a proof of completion, I'll get proper pics up later tonight.

No worries. I’ll be spending most of tomorrow on the road anyway, so the vote thread is going to be a few days out anyway.
Great work all, now go get beep-booping.
