For those who are not following the other threads, we are looking at running an event to raise funds for Paul Sawyer, who sadly is terminally ill.
The idea is to host a meet and play event at Firestorm games in Cardiff (Wales, UK), though dates are yet to be set and I am still waiting to hear from the proposed venue.
That said though it would be handy to have some data as expected attendance so I can relay this to the venue.
So for those who are interested in attending please respond to the poll, if you are not interested in playing but would like to turn up anyway then please feel free to!
The initial idea was for this to be LI only but I would like to expand this as much as possible. If all goes well then hopefully we can make this an annual event to raise funds for chosen charities.
Thanks all.

Sorry for the delay in replying, been overseas.
I have heard back from Firestorm about a range of dates that are feasible and they are happy yo give a 50% discount on table hire for the event, they also say they have loads of AoS and 40k terrain but limited LI, though given the paucity of sign ups shown here I cannot imagine that is an issue.

Excellent Ingtaer good to see the ball is rolling with this. Is the plan for a mega/feature game or for a tournament structure multi-game event?
Once we have a format and date confirmed I can help advertise, I know some of the guys from the Advancing Fire podcast and can help promote in some of the FB groups if we need to try and bump up numbers.

We have six people registered interest in LI so far so lets put it to the vote for format.
I am on favour of one 2000pt game followed by a mega battle.

I think you might struggle to fit that into one working day.
I played in an event a few weeks ago that was two games and 2.5k and we just about fit that into a 9-5 day. I didn't finish either of my games and had to play through lunch, and think that was the majority case.
So I would either do 2 standard games (at 2k) or the one big game. You would then have some time for chatting and anything else the day brings. I would also be tempted to label it as a narrative event rather than tournament as the game is inherently unsuitable for tournament/min-maxing.
You're making the effort here in any case to organise though Ingtaer and it is appreciated so ultimately your decision

Post by: ingtaer
I am used to tournaments doing 3 games in a day, one before lunch and 2 after finishing up around 1900hrs. I cant see a big game lasting that long with this few players. If we do a hard dice down for the first game for lunch.
Agreed on the not calling it a tournament, I would hope that for a casual charity event that no one is going to attend to take it seriously and bring 96 bases of missile marines (or equivalent), if anyone does then we can all point and laugh...
I would rather not be the arbiter of what is done and would like for everyone to be happy with the format. How long do we envision a 3v3 game taking?

Heard from the venue again as I asked for clarification on how terrain they had available for LI/AT, turns out they have one specific table and 2 more at 10mm.
So we might need to put out a call for more terrain (if you have some please post here or send me a PM) or cap the numbers for the game.
I am afraid I do not have the time available to make any more as my printers are tied up until January.

I can provide a tables-worth of terrain for the massive game (if that is 12 x 4) or a couple of tables-worth for smaller games, depending on the set table size we are going for.
What dates are we looking at at the moment?
Fingers crossed some more terrain will be offered, otherwise could ask some of the wider Epic community to help out if needed.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
This was the terrain setup we had for a mega presentation battle a year ago - this was a 12x4 table.
I would say max is 3k points per 6 feet of table, so perhaps 6k per side?
Depending on number of attendees or people wanting to take part, we then set the points value for each person - so 1k per person if we had 12 players for example. What do you think?

Sounds good! As long as its at the casual/narrative end of the spectrum rather than a tournament I also don't really mind whether its small games vs mega game type thing.
I don't have any terrain finished at the moment, but I do have a whole load to do - always helps me to have a deadline, so very happy to contribute towards the terrain side of things too.

It definitely will be casual, I have no interest in trying to do this as a competitive event as it is totally against the ethos of the event.
I am still in favour of having a 1v1 game before lunch and then everyone playing together in a mega game for after.
I have booked attendance for between 10-30 people and from 0900-1900hrs, though await confirmation from Firestorm on this.

Would like some input from the LI players attending, I had planned on printing up a Primarch to scale for each player as a participation prize and have the first few done. For SA some kind of cool Legate Commander? The infantry box only comes with one style but there are actually two choices of commander in the game.
Not sure about Mech though, I guess we’ll know more on that front at the weekend.

Post by: ingtaer
Can you give some idea of what a legate commander would look like? Pickings are pretty slim on the sites I visit.
I was toying with the idea of a tank commander in Vanquisher but am having trouble sourcing one that doesn't look mediocre. And the few commission artists I have approached are either busy, too expensive or not interested.

I think sometimes FSG can take a few days to post event updates on their page, perhaps chase with them if it hasn't appeared in a day or two?
For the event item, I'm trying to think of anyone I have known that plays Legions and only has an SA army and not at least some marines in their collection? Maybe just a few. And I'm sure even those might still want a baby Horus or Sanguinius, as who wouldn't?

I would have to check but they said they would be giving us half price on table hire, I do not remember if that was £7.5 a day or half that though off the top of my head. I am dealing with loads of companies at once and so am struggling to recall what is what.

I am covering table costs for up to 10 tables, so hopefully most of that ticket money will be doing directly to the charity.

I know donations is something that will be looked into, as I've made it known to my fellow mod that while I will not be attending, I know he's trying everything he can, from threats of physical and emotional damage (joke's on him, I am already a burnt-out husk ?) to blackmail, in futile attempts to get me to be there, I am planning on running games of my own here in the swamps with the proceeds going to the charity pool.
And oh dear, let's use the AI image as the last ditch resort haha! I do blame the AI's on not being British enough for not being able to get the prompt "Bacon butty & dice" right. Worst case scenario, I'll have a dive into the world of Fiverr and see if someone there can do it justice.

So after some attempts to get some additional ticket sales through FB have to say the results have been more than a little disappointing. Other than attracting some absolute sociopaths who crawled out of the gutters to attack our using AI art (and seemingly completely prepared to ignore the context of this being a charity event to raise money for someone dying of cancer) it's got very little traction.
Does anyone have any other ideas or other groups that they can share the event with?
Considering the cause, the very reasonable ticket prices, and that this is a currently a supported game I was expecting these to be snapped up in short order.

Cheers for leading the charge on that and sorry you had to deal with the crap, its always a delight...
There are a couple of other things that will hopefully drive some more interest like some prize support but that is waiting for the new year when I have the funds to buy it available!
So far despite the polling here we only have LI sign ups and three people have not contacted me to sign up so I do not know what is going on with them.
I am also in contact with a Warcry groups TO/EO about having him run a event concurrently but we have a few logistical issues to sort out before that can be announced formally.
I wonder if the raffle portion needs to be divorced from the physical in order to draw more interest and allow wider participation, so far we have 2 companies and 5 people having pledged to provide stuff for that.

Some real gak guzzlers have crawled out the sewers it seems, its very disappointing. If the real situation wasn't so sad, it would have been amusing seeing all the trash look like this in those threads:
You are more than welcome to promote the event on the 6mm wargaming and terrain facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/266872090170793/.
Stick to advertising the legions/Epic 40k side and it will be ok. (I know you have other games planned on the day, but if the main post is focused for legions, I can slipped it past the crew!)
There's always some crybabies there too, those that get their knickknacks in a twist that Epic and anything GW doesn't belong on the page as they think it should be a historical page, but epic is 100% allowed on the page. There are probably better pages to advertise the event but:
1- As the support on those 'pure' epic pages has been gak, even if only one person takes notice its for a good cause!
2- I'll ban anyone that gaks up the thread there. I'll misuse my admin powers this one time for a good cause quite happily.
3- Almost the entire admin team of the page are Epic 40k or Ex-Epic 40k players.
4- My job has been overly busy and banning people gakking a thread up there over the next day or two would lift some of the tedium and its for a good cause so it would give me good christmas vibes!

All I can say is "sorry!" for providing the AI art, I had hoped to use a favour or two with an artsy contact of mine, but alas, favours apparently have an expiration date. Also they were whining something awful about how "exposure was not enough" or somesuch.. whatever.

I may have accidentally lost my rag with I think the 3rd or 4th person to mention the AI art
Thankfully I think the one site admin banned one of the losers that kept on going on about it (and who also tried to make out that the whole thing was an attempt at a scam). Honestly, it is pretty pathetic, they must sit at home searching through posts to get enraged about.

The Podcast is well worth a listen if you are into Legions, it's a good laugh, very laid back and Tom & team are some of the main community organisers for Legions in the UK so you will always get to hear about events on the page first, as well as in-depth looks at the new releases (the latest is covering the new Mechanicum book).

Follow-up thought ... seems unlikely many (if any) folks will be bring big titans for a 2k game of LI, but wouldn't it look good to have some titans taking part in the mega-game? Is it worth bringing some extra titans for the big game, or if it's easier I wouldn't have a problem with swapping to a Titan maniple based list for the afternoon game (I'm not convinced it'd be much fun to play with/against in a regular 2k game)? Thoughts...?

Well I can say that no one who has signed up and sent me an email has listed their faction as Titans, Knights or either form of Mech. Cannot say as if that means no one is bringing them at all though as I haven't asked for lists...
So, it is entirely upto you! If you think you will have fun with Titans in either format then feel free! I agree that it would look more spectacular but fun should be the first priority.
Which reminds me that I need to email FSG... again.

General Kroll- was there anything in particular you are thinking of? I am keen to use the Tallarn Fog rules for the 1v1 games to avoid the possibility of turn 1 feels bad moments.
Easy E, there have been no further sales.

Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the omission of light at on heavy bolters for marine flyers, there must be other typos and such that we ought to clarify.

I've shared the event around a few places, doesn't seem to have helped drum up much extra support though.
And cool, even if I don't bring any titans in my 2k list I'll bring some along for the afternoon game! (though I might have to use some in my list as I'm not entirely convinced I'm going to get everything painted in time, though I am trying...!)

I am sorry to say that life has taken a turn for the worse for me and my attendance is severely in doubt as I need to go into hospital for surgery the day before the event. I am trying to reschedule it but it seems unlikely.
I would ask that someone please volunteer to take over the running of the event on the day and let me know soonest so that I can get the various bits and bobs I have collected sent to them in time for distribution.
The raffle/auction will also not be happening I am afraid to say, only the tokens and templates I have posted previously will be allowed to be sold as such.
I am really sorry about this and was really looking forward to it (and giving MDG a kicking ;p).
For those I still owe email replies to I will endeavour to get that sorted as soon as I am able as well as contact FSG to let them know when I know who is taking over.
Again, I apologise and hope to see you all next year if we can make this a yearly thing.

Hi folks, have had a quick catch up with Ingtaer and have agreed to handle the running of the event on the day.
So rest assured it will be going ahead as planned.
And importantly Ingtaer gets to look after his health and not worry too much about pushing you soldiers around.

Guys could I make a request, is anyone handy with design to do some simple certificates for the event that we could print off?
Just need something basic referring to Bac-Con or pulling in Easy-E's design on the last page? Perhaps something of either landscape A4 or A5.
We would need:
- Eye of Horus: Best Traitor General
- Fist of the Emperor: Best Loyalist General
- Sportsmanship award
- Best-painted Army

Thanks that is kind of you to offer and will definitely let you know if we do. I have a friend helping with lugging boxes on the day and hopefully getting some help from the Advancing Fire guys and a local club so fingers crossed we are all sorted

1x DM.
1x TS.
1x DA.
2x BA.
2x IF.
And maybe one AL and one SoH.

Sorry to hear about that Ingtaer - hope the surgery goes well and for a quick recovery after.
And thanks for taking it on Pacific, as Gen Kroll says happy to chip in as needed if there is anything I can do to help. Do you still want additional terrain? I've got bits that I'm happy to along if needed.
Graphic design is not my forte, but will have a play around with the certificates idea if nobody has.
Also, pretty unimportant point, but one of those BA armies will almost certainly be Iron Warriors as I was hoping to get my Angels finished this week and that is looking very unlikely to be achieved at the moment...!

Post by: Pacific
Thanks a lot for the offer Piousservant, the award certificates have now been done so we are OK on that score. If you are able to bring any terrain and it's not too much of a bother it certainly won't hurt to have more.
All set with the event/mission pack too which is very much on theme for being light-hearted and ties in with the Bacon narrative
Ingtaer has had an absolutely cracking idea for an attendance gift. There are also some great raffle prizes and as we have said 100% of ticket and raffle money will be going to the Brain Tumour Charity. And there are still tickets available if anyone would like to come and suddenly has a free Saturday.

If anyone ( UK based) would like raffle tickets please send a PM to myself or Ingtaer. £1 per ticket, 100% of proceeds to the Brain Tumor Charity trust. Some great Legions Imperialis-related prizes, we've also had a donation of Star Wars Legion stuff and even some Oldhammer, including a complete Battle for Armageddon (1993) boardgame and Epic Space Marine 1st edition rulebook.
If you're not at Firestorm on the day we'll contact for address details if you do win a prize in the draw.

And the dust settles over the battlefield as the weary players return to their homes for some well earned rest...
I am happy to have made it to the event today and despite not being totally compos mentis, even going so far to forget to give out an entry gift (sorry mate, glad you caught it!), delighted to say that thanks to Pacific's hard work it all seemed to go off without a hitch and was great fun. Everyone who attended looked to be enjoying themselves and we raised a bit of a cash for a very worthwhile charity. It was great to put some faces to usernames and have a chat as well as throw some dice and not die horribly at the same time!
I only took a few pics on the day but here they are for your edification, hopefully other attendees can add some more to the thread;
Massive thanks to all those who attended, donated or just cheered on. If anyone still wishes to make a donation then please PM me for the details (or read back through the thread for my paypal...)
And again, many thanks to Pacific for stepping up and taking up my slack, you rock, did a fantastic job and it was lovely to meet you.
And thanks to Buy the Same Token and Art of War tokens for their contributions as well as every individual who gifted things.
It is fantastic to have this community come together as a community and do something worthwhile, I really hope we can make this a yearly event but larger and broader next time.
I will update the thread in due course when we have our final tally for the donation.

Thanks a lot for the comments guys and was lovely to finally meet some posters from the forum. Great work Ingtaer for doing all of the legwork with the funding and raffle and getting the event to that stage, and was good things managed to go without a hitch - people had tables to play on and someone to play against, which was the base level we were aiming for!
Was great to see some games played in good spirit and the doubles game in the afternoon in particular was a really good laugh. Congratulations to Piousservant for winning the 'Baps of Horus' best Traitor general award, especially in his first games, and I think did General Kroll (if I have got my names matched up correctly) win 'Butty of the Emperor' best Loyalist? Was great to see some good games taking place in any case and I think even the people who had very limited experience of the game seemed to have a good time.
A few photos below of some of the games in action. If there is an appetite, perhaps would be good to make it an annual event and have a go again next year.
Some of the raffle prizes, Ingtaer also added some extra goodies to these including some Legions Imperialis tokens sets and some quite excellent packs of Traitor and Loyalist Primarchs.
Dark Mechanicum (soon to be Dead Mechanicum!) line up against Blood Angels
A classic Iron Warriors vs Imperial Fists match-up.
More Fists, this time against Thousand Sons
Iron Warriors and Night Lords up against Blood Angels and Imperial Fists. Had quite a lot of fun with this between Piousservant and I not wanting to be first to the objective and get mown down, and then a bit of craven cowardice from the Imperial Fists later on! The Traitors did eventually capture it but there were an awful lots of deaths, not least from the Dire Wolf which I think got a fairly hefty kill count.
Dark Mechanicum and Thousand Sons with a pleasingly colour-coordinated Traitor side against Loyalist Solar Auxilia and Imperial Fists. Think General Kroll joked with this one that every time we looked over to this table basically no-one had died! The Traitors did steal the objective, carrying the day for Horus's forces.
To the sound of a 31st millenium rendition of Fortunate Son a Thunderhawk sets the farmland alight. If you look carefully you can see Sanguinius, who unfortunately was gunned down by (I think?) some Sicaran tanks, in a bit of a change from the book!

Yes that was me winning the Butty of the Emperor Here are some of my photos from the event:
The skittering constructs of the Dark Mechanicum seeking cover from the oncoming Blood Angels and Legio Solaria Assault.
The thundering approach of Reaver Titan Dux Mortis of Legio Solaria supported by Land Raiders, and a small but determined contingent of White Scars.
The approach of The Angel and his Sanguinary Guard covered by Missile squads from a nearby rooftop.
Blood Angels Fire Raptors approach under the radar hoping to deploy troops and secure the valuable cover in the centre ground.
The Direwolf lurking and waiting to strike at its targets.
Iron Warriors Rhinos secure the meat wagon for the heretical forces of the Warmaster. While a bemused green skin watches on from his downed Dakka jet.

I has a brilliant idea for raffle prizes.
Headed back to WHW on Sunday, the last day of its Store Anniversary. Which means Exclusives. A bunch of which I’ve picked up.
Models wot can go for silly money thanks to scalpers.
A selection of those. Maybe £100 or so out my sky rocket, but a tempting temptation for raffle prizes.

Raffle wise, it's really not too much of a nause as long as it's for charitable causes - I've been involved with a few for the youth group I help run. Other than it must have physical tickets there really isn't too much to worry about.

It is very early days yet for an event next year, but what are people's thoughts for the format going forward?
Really enjoyed the day and hopefully the attendees did too, and it was great to raise that money for a good cause, but I have to be honest the attendance was not what we were hoping. Considering Firestorm is one of the busiest gaming centres in the UK (I believe they had had an event the weekend before with 100+ attendees), ticket price was very reasonable (with an attendance gift & prizes), it was for an excellent cause and we had absolutely hammered advertising for months leading up to it on social media and forums, I think we should have expected more. A fair few of the people attending were those that Ingtaer and I dragged along on the day!
My thoughts are that the limiting factor might be that Legions Imperialis is not ideal for this sort of day event - it doesn't seem to have yet picked up a tounament community in the same way as Age of Darkness has (anecdotally, another event I know of had 8 attendees which I think is the same as we managed for the game on the day, so it isn't just us!) and people are perhaps playing at home or game club nights instead?
It is not the best sign when an Armageddon event which was an hour down the road in Bristol managed a sell-out with double the attendance, for a game that has been out of production for 20+ years. But perhaps the key point there is I think they have that core community of tournament/event players which turn up for them.
My thoughts on some options for a future Bac-Con event:
- Make it a much more open just 'day of games'. No narrative event or specified format, but keep the charity donations and raffle, could still have 'best painted' and 'sportsmanship awards'.
- Some sort of 'Oldhammer' games day. Perhaps open to a selection of oldhammer war and boardgames, or we focus on one each year and cycle between them each year? You could then tap into some of the other Oldhammer groups (FSG have a bunch of people that turn up to play previous WHFB editions for example) and that could help attendance. There is also an upward trend in popularity of Oldhammer, and would fit nicely with the remembrance of Paul.
- Keep it as an 'Epic games' day but include other Epic versions as well as Legions Imperialis? Might help pull in some of the other Oldhammer Epic groups.
The downside there is it means we potentially wouldn't have the narrative and campaign games as we had for Rynd's World, as it would be difficult to write something that would include 3 or 4 gaming systems.
Any thoughts much appreciated!

Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
Definitely an Open Games Day.
Maybe even open it up to older editions as exhibition matches. For instance, I’ve now a complete set of 2nd Ed books, and the modern models work pretty much fine. An exhibition match or two, honouring Paul Sawyer’s sterling efforts in 2nd Ed’s glory days seems appropriate.
It could work as a take-all-comers type thing, but would require anyone wanting to do a bit of 2nd Ed to have read and digested the rules first?

I'm conscious that this post COULD sound negative - it isn't intended that way.
I thought about coming when it was announced. For me, Epic made it a no. Great as the venue looked, again, for me, a significant distance, and either 1 or 2 overnights. I fully accept this won't be a barrier for others.
40k is Paul Sawyer as much as Epic (in my GW view) and some form of round robin leagues in a day would be more appealing. I'm also fully aware that a host of different options are available with many different preferences. I'm glad everyone had a good time and that the donations remember Paul in a positive way.

Post by: Easy E
I would say do not change, as these type of events need to build momentum year-after-year. The first one you should be happy if anyone turns up. Once you get to the 3-5th annual is when you start to have repeat business and word-of-mouth growth.
If you changed anything, perhaps a Oldhammer/Warhammer 40k using 5th edition (or maybe even older, I don't recall the edition he was mostly the editor of White Dwarf for) to celebrate his contribution to wargaming? I am not aware of him having much of a connection to Legions Imperialis.
84689
Post by: ingtaer
Well as can be seen by the poll in the first post this was never designed to be an LI event, it was open to all games and a quarter of the attendees were playing 40k. It is just that the active conversation and most of the advertising were done for LI for various reasons.
34906
Post by: Pacific
Ingtaer I think initially MDG had come up with the idea for a tribute event for Paul down in the Epic/Legions section of the forum and so that started the ball rolling and evolved from there.
But definitely I think broadening the appeal for next time might work well.
@Stroller - thanks a lot for the feedback. That's a good point about the location of Firestorm and I know a few people from the Epic community that didn't attend voiced similar concerns, unless you are in the west or south-west of the UK its a long trip and possibly an overnighter.
Hopefully as Easy E has said even having a modest attendance is a good start and we can build on that for coming events and if it becomes a yearly thing.
MDG - I really like the idea of some sort of presentation game of Oldhammer 40k. I actually tried one at Firestorm a few years ago for old Epic and had a pretty good turnout. There is also a growing community of Oldhammer 40k events (I have seen them both for 2nd and 3rd edition) that perhaps we could tap into.
At the moment I'm thinking perhaps have a wide umbrella covering Oldhammer of whichever game, perhaps a combination of presentation games or even mini tournament if enough are playing one system? All under the ' Bac-Con' name, and of course bacon-themed narrative created for whichever game people are playing But we have a lot of time to organise and think of ideas, please post below and we can go from there!
8725
Post by: Mad Doc Grotsnik
Also?
As the Loot Meister Öber Goon? I’m quietly building quite the stockpile of rare, in-box and still shrink wrapped minis, ready for a Bac-con related raffle.
So when the next event goes ahead? Hopefully such offerings will help attract extra donations.
I do need to look into the licensing and ratifying and that of an online and offline raffle draw. Because being genuinely legit is important. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, maybe we can tap up suiting YouTube Channels, like Olden Demon to help spread the word and that?
99541
Post by: Piousservant
Pacific - that sounds good! Whilst I'd be willing to play LI again (talk about damned by faint praise... ), I think the "Oldhammer" branding is a pretty great idea. I'd definitely be more keen to do some older Epic (not that I have any experience with that) or an old edition of 40k (3rd for me!) or maybe even dust off some BFG... Nice opportunities for a mix of exhibition/participation games and/or narrative event style tournament rounds.
Even if people are playing different game systems, it probably wouldn't be too hard to have a loose over-arching narrative for 40k, 30k and Fantasy I guess? I always liked the idea of a combined narrative event covering BFG through Epic to 40k, etc...!
And awesome work MDG - that will surely draw extra interest! As I put with a link above, as long as you're just doing offline (e.g. at the event) it's honestly very straight forward to do a charity raffle. Probably trickier if you want to do it online though, not something I've had experience with unfortunately.
84689
Post by: ingtaer
I could certainly be down for a grog revenge event (BFG, Epic the proper, WHFB 6th...) but I sincerely doubt it would do any better on attendance or fund raising than the last event.
If various people are keen I am thinking a mini event at Bristol's BIG in a few months time could be good, nothing major but maybe a game of LI and BFG? Or whatever takes peoples fancy.

Post by: Olthannon
If I could make a mild request that it was somewhere in the middle of the country for a follow up and I could maybe attend
I'd also cast my vote for some sort of 3rd edition 40k event or 6th Fantasy. They being the style of the time during Paul's editorialship.
