Really looking forward to Exterminatus. I'm wondering if we'll just fight Orks, or Chaos as well. Let's scroos our fingers for some Tyranid DLC as well.
Seriously, as much as I love the game and how it portrays the 40k universe, I just wish the maps would be a bit more varied. Something on an ice or jungle world.
As much as i love this game, both SP and MP im almost ready to pull the plug on it.I cant handle the lag issues with the MP and playing from Australia its becoming impossible to play a match without suffering a dangerous rage attack.I know it could be worse but the best connection i ever get is 2 bars and typically (90%) of the time play with 1 red bar.Sometimes its not so bad but the amount of times i get shot through cover, killed by an unswung thunderhammer, or get cut down by an assault marine while im standing behind them watching them attack the area about 10 metres infront of me is starting to take its toll on my sanity.I really hope it gets patched and fixed because any of my australian friends online who were playing have given up and i dont want to aswell.

Its both Chaos and Orks.
I agree on hoping to see some different environments like a jungle or archipelago.

What platform are you on? I haven't had any issues on 360, and apparently the matchmaking on PS3 has also been fixed.

To go off completly into wishfull thinking, wouldn't this game be perfect for recreating some "historical" 40k battles, like Macragge or Armageddon?
Melissia wrote:That seems very, very unlikely to happen. GW wants to keep said battles vague.
That way their easier to retcon down the road
Would be nice if the Mod scene got ahold of this though, some custom maps, 20 SM, 200 Orks type deal, and they we could all gripe as our computers melted

That would be epic. but with how much hell you let loose on the orks, better make that 20 space marines vs 400 orks! more even that way
warboss wrote:I've tried switching up my routines in Space Marine a bit over the last day or two and have totally changed my mind about the storm bolter. While its still crap at medium ranges and beyond, it's pretty darn good right out of the box without any perks at point blank and short ranges. It's pretty darn good combined with the grenade perks for clearing out a command point. Overall, I'm pretty impressed with the majority of the weapons and their balance. There are a few that I still don't find terribly useful in my own hands (like anything with the word plasma) but I do get killed by others wielding them.
GAH!! Me too. The only thing plasma I use alot is the plasma pistol on the assault marine, and thats only barely, like when someone is running away from me and I can get a couple clear shots to their backside. Other then that, I just dont like them. They fire much to slowly for my tastes, and the plasma cannon just pisses me off with how over powered the charge splash is. Its insane. I even read one of those "helpful tips" things that mentioned the plasmacannon has a stronger shot if fired directly at someone then the charge splash. BS! Ive taken a few hits from the RARE person that shoots them directly, and survived plenty of times. The splash damage noob fire into a random area shots, now those I can count on one hand the times Ive survived that, and its alwayss been just barely
I made a hilariously colored CSM just the other day for kicks. So if you see the equivalent of fruit loops mixed with spaceMarine,on PSN, chances are decent it was me

And I found that the Storm Bolter is awesome against Assault Class...I went 17-7 with four captures and three defends on Waste Management last night
I unlocked the helmet just the other day. I LOVE that style helmet, my fav by far. Im still tweeking the stormbolter though. I seem to still do ok, meaning I havnt totally figured out how best to use it. Im thinking when next I play with that, Ill go with that perk that gives you a bunch of grenades, thatll help me out a ton taking down folks, specially those damned Iron halo/FNPdevs

I think the Plasma Gun works great against Devs...hit them with a charged shot, cool down, then rush them while shooting normal shots...or nuke them with the Melta when you get close enough
I agree about the hbolter dev against assault. If Im in the right area, I can kick an assaults ass. Oddly enough, that area I need, has to be a big open area, I need the assault to leap up into the air, then I chuck a couple grenades at the ground and dodge. It works rather well, and if the bastard gets right on me, then I just drop all the grenades Ive got on my feet and let him kill me. I get SO many "glory in death" or revenge kills because they explode just as they are killing me
I even prefer the bolt pistol to the plasma pistol
99% of the time, so do I. It's the only way I have found to make the power axe useful, use the axe to strip their armor, and doubletap them with the pistol. The use I have found for the plasma pistol is stripping the armor off devastators so the chainsword can come down and one/two shot them.
It works rather well, and if the bastard gets right on me, then I just drop all the grenades Ive got on my feet and let him kill me.
Oi! You stop final vengeance devastator-ing right now! You can't use that perk, only WE can use that perk!
Seriously though, I do love it when they land semi-off target, they're recovering while i'm prepping the stomp, and then it comes down and strips their armor just in time to get a pair of bolt pistol rounds ripping through their eyeballs.
I dunno HOW the hell you bolt pistol guys are so damn accurate I think though, I really need a new controller, as I bought mine used its pretty worn out with all the game time Ive put on it since buying my PS3 forever ago. So now the analogs are pretty....loose to say the least.
But yea, I laugh EVERYTIME I kill an assault marine with that, because I just KNOW they are sitting at home going "son of a bitch! That guy gets me with that everytime!"
I'm taking a break until the DLC I think to play Ro2, but I will say, damn if that Bolt Pistol is a tiny little sniper rifle on it's own. At least on the PC. I love using that thing, but it may need a slight accuracy nerf....
I dunno HOW the hell you bolt pistol guys are so damn accurate
I've been doing this a long time, and I play it on PC. Mice make aiming a heck of a lot faster and easier than my 360 joysticks.
Then you land some dude right next to me with a big ol jetpack on his head, a brain full of mad, and hes more or less coming at me in a straight line or standing still...Barring lag/host advantage it's Child's play.
....On the other hand, I am generally on the way to getting drunk (Or have left the Last Outpost of Sobriety long beforehand) or half-<CENSORING> my playing nowadays too...Hm. Perhaps I'd kill more if I stopped that...
I imagine I can scrape one together, got 4 or 5 people on my list that play with a couple more planning on it. Hopefully won't have to join with pubbers but I've actually met a couple really cool people that way.
Is there an upper limit for XP that anyone noticed? I realized you stop ranking up once you hit the number for 41 but it looks like the XP still accumulates. Hopefully the DLC will include a raise of the level cap ala Halo Reach.

I'm 38, and I can't wait for Exterminatus to change things up a bit. These last few levels are starting to turn into a bit of a grind. The main thing keeping me going currently is that Mk 4 armor being dangled like a carrot on a stick.
Sad news that I learned today... I was mistaken that you still accrue XP after reaching 41. You actually are just frozen at the same XP for some odd reason instead of still gaining it from challenges/battles without the leveling.
Im pretty excited for it to drop. I think itll be the only reason I end up putting the coolers on my HBolter, as in a P2P game, that perk is useless
Also, why dont my multi killstreaks count as more then 1 killstreak? It would make getting second perks so much easier, Ill get killstreak x6 or so and it still only counts as 1. WTF?

True that. What do you people think about getting bonuses for killstreaks, like in CoD or Crysis? I mean, wouldn't it be cool to get a 9 killstreak and get an orbital strike on your enemies?

Nope, it's stupid in CoD, and it would be even dumber in this.

Would be very nice, sit at X10 Kill streak and then your like... crap I need to go die
Having a bit more play now under my belt, I'd go with the following issues:
1. Small content - single player was not that long, and Multiplayer is deep in the classes but short on levels/modes
2. Lag - The game really could have used some dedicated servers for it, going straight to other people can really bog down the game, even when you yourself have a good connection (and I'm not sure it always picks the best connection speed when it jumps in, if it's going to force dump you into a game, than at least it might let you select).
Nice things:
Graphics - the graphics are all very good and pretty
Kit customization - You can really tailor your kits and appearance, which is very nice.
I will definitely agree on the host issue. Sometimes the hosts are great, and I have no problems with the game play. Other times, assault marines float in the air, and you've no idea where they are going to attack. Or your shooting at someone, and they magically teleport 50ft that way, and youve been shooting at a wall and not known it.
Infact that happened the other night when my brother and I got to finally play together. The first match we played, the host was so fething terrible, that crap happened everywhere, and to everyone playing. You could tell be cause when the match was done, everyone had really low kills. Then the 2nd match started the same way, but then we got the "migrating to new host" and it froze the game up and we both to (so Im guessing everyone did) reset the game. It was pretty annoying
I'm having the same problem with the hosts. More than once I have been shooting at an Assault Marine only to have him magically appear behind me and kill me with a melee attack. Or been shot to death, despite the fact I was behind cover.
I love playing this game, but the extreme lag is making me go back to Black Ops and Bad Company 2....well, until the DLC comes out
Haven't posted in a while, but felt the need to drop in - really loving the game on the whole. I don't think the single player was too short, but will agree that the multiplayer is in need of more maps and gametypes.
Still, it's nice to finally have a game that makes playing as a Space Marine feel just as awesome as it should. Can't wait for Exterminatus!
I'm hoping that in addition to the new mode and maps for exterminatus, they might toss in a few extra regular maps as well.
At this point, I would say I am VERY familiar with all of the maps, lol. And man, they really need to put some maps in different settings, getting a bit tired of forgeworld brown... need a BLUE SKY! Hell, put a map on a different planet, I don't care!
Agreed. Im to the point that when someone tosses a flashbang.....I know where to run, even when blind. Infact sometimes, Ill just shoot into the white, and score kills I used to run and flail like a noob
Even if the maps had some random....something. I dont care either, just some more change then the 3 maps Im always on
Blind grenades are annoying, but I definitely get hit with them the most as assault as well.
Rolled out the Heavy Bolter for the first time the other night... went 10-0 on my first try with it, I really like that gun!
I kinda wished they'd put executions into Exterminatus, just give Tacs a chain sword, and then maybe make an animation for devs to smash their guns onto the chest/head of their enemy
Im pretty close on the hbolter....but I wanted to work on the other weapons a bit more. And yea, the HBolter is just badass wrapped into a weapon. I you set up a good fire lane, you can just lay opponents down like wheat

Not spoiling anything but the final fight was awesome !!!!!!!!!!!
Fingers crossed on some DLC soon

Some small spoilers...
Spoiler:
While the warboss was definitely the better of the two big boss fights, I had problems with both. I would have preferred an end to the warboss fight with a unique in game engine execution instead of a cutscene (or at least activating the cutscene that way instead of him staying up on the platform for the second half). As for the game ending fight, it was incredibly unsatisfying to have it be just a quick time event button mash. Fighting him first the normal way (as with the warboss) and then QTEs? That I'd have been fine with.
Melissia wrote:The final fight was actually kinda boring.

My thoughts on the end
Spoiler:
Yea the final boss wasnt that badass......I had a much harder time fighting all his minions before hand. I restarted the game the other day and am playing it through on hard, so Im sure that part will piss me off something fierce But that fall fighting bit was kindda cool, it was different for sure
But ya, the Warboss....holy gak that guy was tough. I dunno how many times I hit him with the lascannon and how many bullets I put through him, and how many bombsquigs I blew up at his side, but he was proppa Ork tough.
Some quick thoughts on mutiplayer:
I am about 3-4 kill streaks away from the bolter targeter. It has been a slow, slow process. At this point I am thinkng I should have focused on other weapon perks as I am sick of the bolter now......
Lascannons, and Scoped bolter are my least liked weapons. Never been a fan of hiding in a corner and sniping others. Fail to see the fun in it. Plasma Cannons are lazy too but at least you see them coming.
I agree with you big time. I think the Killstreaks take to damn long, specially with a weapon you arnt so good at. Ive been working on the stormbolter trying to get that up there, and sometimes I get a good killstreak going and it only counts as 1 fething killstreak! I just got a x8 killstreak.....and thats all I get? WTF?! But yea.....what can ya do
I need help - I've been sitting in this damned multiplayer lobby for what must easily be 20 minutes having just bought the game tonight, people are coming and going all the time, both teams getting 8/8 players, it says starting across the top for the whole thing but NOTHING'S FETHING HAPPENING!
Am I missing something? I've button mashed all the way through this just to try and see if I hadn't readied up but there's no option for this...?
What system are you playing on? I know the PS3 crowd anyways, had some issues from the start on getting into games, and did exactly what you mentioned, but they released a patch that you have to download and it fixed it right up
Weirdly, complaining about it to the Dakka community seems to have fixed the issue, now I just need to... get good. Could take a while judging by how badly I just got pwned! 1 kill: 13 deaths? Not good....
KTD isn't as important in SM, infact dying pays off in the way of EXP for certain challenges. Once you get the hang of it you should start get a positive one, but the game is very meat grinderish.
Thats true, sometimes Ive have a higher death ratio then kills, and STILL landed in the top 3 spots. Something that will help you out alot, help capture points, always uncap the enemies objectives whenever you can, and to help you get better at killing people, follow someone. Seriously, just tag along some random team member and when he/she starts shooting things, shoot with them. Itll help you out, AND if you just behind the fellow, you have a better chance of seeing someone dropping on his face. Then youve got a better chance to move back and just shoot at the assault marine
Yeah it's the assault marines that i was struggling with, both using and against - I found that I wasn't hitting things because I wasnt lined up correctly thanks to that naff camera, or theyd just drop in behind me (using Devastator, mostly, that HB rocks).
What a shame, I'll have to get some practice in tonight
I myself just finished the campaign, while the majority of it was pretty good, there was some parts that annoyed me, mainly the final battle.
Spoiler:
I was expecting somethin alot more awesome than, shoulder barrage off the edge into a button mash, Like above a normal fight then the air fight would have made it better.
Oh and I hated the Ork Warboss, not for the fact he was tough but for the fact there was a gakky excecution. I was chanting at my screen for somethin awesome to happen then he just shoots the Warboss in the face. WTF?!

Agreed. I wouldn't have minded a quick-time button mash AFTER a proper fight at the end of the game but not instead of. As for the earlier boss fight, an IN GAME execution followed by a cutscene would have been much preferred. I had more fun bashing normal chaos champions' and nobs' heads in than the final boss fight.

I removed your spoiler tags since you're probably referring to a regular nob battle. The warboss battle ended for me as described in the spoiler tag below.
Spoiler:
You shoot him in the face when he's disabled with your plasma pistol after some verbal banter. This is done in a cutscene and not the in-game engine.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I'd be pleasantly surprised if there were different endings to it though.
I've heard through general in game chatter that the DLC is supposed to drop on October 2nd. Does anyone have a link to where that is officially listed or just reported on a gaming site?
Part of me wants to do the whole "stop buying an Xbox" thing... but the rest of me is terrified of bad juju coming my way for it....so ya...........................
I love the game, it's the equivalent of a popcorn movie, it's light entertainment, there is no thinking involved, definitely good to pass an hour or so.
The single player is stupidly easy, so I'd recommend anyone to do it on hard right from the off, the multiplayer can lag soooo much, it's beyond annoying.
There isn't much depth in the multiplayer modes, and I'd like to see some DLC for it
I bought mine for £25 brand new a few days after it was released, definitely glad I got it that cheap
Funny, I find its multiplayer element far more deep than most FPS or 3PS games. Unless it's something like Nuclear Dawn or other which has its own unique features, Space Marine's addition of the 3-dimensional elements (Whcih really need to be explored more, but be that as it may...) really makes for interesting fights over most games.
Certainly better than more generic games like gears, battlefield, or call of duty. The main problem is lag, really...
For anyone who has held out on buying the game in the US for the console format, the Best Buy ad this week has it on sale for the xbox/ps3 @ $40. YMMV though as I don't know if those types of sales are regional or national.
I'm quite looking forward to the co-op DLC, should get me back into playing this having not been on for a while. I know you can gain XP in Exterminatus, but I wonder if it will count towards armour/weapon challenges.
Fezman wrote:I'm quite looking forward to the co-op DLC, should get me back into playing this having not been on for a while. I know you can gain XP in Exterminatus, but I wonder if it will count towards armour/weapon challenges.
They've said that the XP will count in general but I personally hope the kills themselves don't count towards challenges. Getting killstreaks on generic orks is a heck of alot easier than against flesh and blood players using marines with perks.
That would indeed be a very good reason for co-op not to count towards challenges.
Regarding the Exterminatus mode, I see a lot of potential for expansion there if it keeps getting DLC support. There are so many opportunities to bring in new locations and factions (the main drawback for fans of said factions being that they would be appearing as mere AI enemies - though this is really just a long-winded for me to say they should add Tyranid-infested space hulk and Necron tomb co-op maps).
I'm hoping that there will be additional DLC (paid or free) but frankly I'm not too hopeful. The fact that the game is on sale a few weeks after release for $20 less (even if temporary) usually isn't a good sign. In the US, the NPD data used to tell you what games sold well but I haven't kept up on that in a long while. I guess we'll have to wait a few more weeks as the game came out this month and the NPD reports are monthly IIRC.

Considering that they sold out and had to produce more a week after release says they did pretty good in the eyes of the company.

3D has been explored in games since Duke Nukem and Tribes(?), and the game has very generic weapons compared to other games like Gears of War (Digger, Torque Bow(admitingly stolen from Turok, itself), and Grenade Bag and Tagging say's "Evening, Madam"), but I agree on it's major problem being Lag. Nothing like getting killed by a Power Sword from twelve feet away.

From the Space Marine website, and their twitter account unless I remember wrong..
Demand for Space Marine has been amazing, and we are getting reports that some retailers in the UK are sold out on PC. We can assure you that we’re working hard to make sure that all Battle Brothers get their copy of Space Marine as quickly as possible.
A second wave of Space Marine stock has already made its way to select stores across the UK today and will be available from tomorrow, with a third wave to arrive on Monday. In the meantime, you can download the game today from the THQ UK E-Shopor purchase online from these stores.
Slarg232 wrote:3D has been explored in games since Duke Nukem and Tribes(?)
... you had so many examples and you choose THOSE?
Heck even Quake 3 had more vertical action than those two barring custom maps lol...
But for Space Marine, it's a built in function of one of the classes, not merely a map feature.
Melissia wrote:But for Space Marine, it's a built in function of one of the classes, not merely a map feature.
Tribes 2, every class could fly under their own power. Of course, some less than others, but when you're wearing Terminator sized armour it's probably not a good idea to let the player fly about like a scout, game balance and all that.
Slarg, having played a lot of Space Marine and Gears, the lag I've encountered in Gears is minimal in comparison (but it does show up sometimes). Why this is I don't know, does GoW3 use dedicated servers? P2P is horrible.

Automatically Appended Next Post: But yea, the lag is just eye gougingly annoying. I love ducking behind cover only to be shot to death from magic heat seeking bullets. Or the 20ft sword that has been mentioned. The worst though, I was stabbed to death by a knife from a good 15ft away. That got me annoyed. Or if your spraying someone and they died from lag from another player, you dont even get XP for helping because the bastard was apparently already dead
Melissia wrote:Considering that they sold out and had to produce more a week after release says they did pretty good in the eyes of the company.
Hey that is good to hear, Mel.
I think most of the people who bought it for xbox got it for the campaign though, it didn't even make it into the top 20 of Unique-Users on Xbox Live :(
Weird though, I always get fast matches when I play multiplayer; maybe after the coop DLC.
Yes, GoW3 uses dedicated servers.
Actually it isn't always for sure dedicated, it still has p2p matches as well. I believe ranked competitive matches are weighted higher to actually get space on the dedicated boxes, casual matches and horde games are probably all P2P, especially from my experience with them so far.
daedalus-templarius wrote:I believe ranked competitive matches are weighted higher to actually get space on the dedicated boxes, casual matches and horde games are probably all P2P, especially from my experience with them so far.
Complete opposite for me, though considering I've only played Horde and Beast so far, very rarely with any lag.

Well, their network code is excellent this time around. I haven't had a huge mess of lag issues while playing horde, just a couple times I've had a few hiccups.
So I really love the soundtrack for this game... only problem is, I don't remember anything specific happening during the tracks I'm listening to.
For some other game soundtracks, listening to the music really takes me back to the time when they were playing in the game. I wonder if the music just wasn't loud enough in Space Marine
I didnt realize people were looking forward to the multiplayer so much, I bought the game exclusively for the single player and was rather disappointed with only 4 hours of gameplay time :(
Melissia wrote:I got ten hours out of it. What, did you quit halfway through?
I got about the same. I could see trying to purposely speed through it on easy to gain the achievements/trophies on easy and having it take 4 hours but not a first time story playthrough. Especially with all the damn empty hallways and elevators...
Also, for the first time since I got this game, I was unable to find a single multiplayer seize ground game to play in the US primetime period. Combined with the fact that the game isn't even in the top 20 games played last week doesn't bode well for a new release. :(

Not really. That top twenty list hasnt' changed that much from a similar list I saw five years ago. The only real newcomers here are Dead Island and Red Dead Redemption. For the others, only the numbers changed. The game had good sales regardless, and Relic's DLC sales for Retribution were quite good, so they likely want to try more DLC sales for Space Marine.
It's actually doing fairly decently on Steam, whose own top played lists don't change much either (CS, CS:S, TF2, Civilization, Fallout, Left 4 Dead 1 and 2, Call of Duty, etc are regulars there as well).

While I can't comment on Steam as I only have a single game with them, I do follow the Major Nelson blog weekly. New games that do sell well but don't have an established multiplayer community tend to break that top twenty and then slide off as people finish the campaigns and tire of the limited multiplayer within the first month or so (and occasionally bounce back on if large DLC is released). Either way, we should know if it was in the top 10 selling hardcopy games of September for all platforms in about a week when the NPD data is published.
I'm so pissed off! Have you ever heard of a company not allowing their customers to progress past a certain level unless they BUY a code to allow them to do so?!
I bought a preowned copy and got stuck at level 5 because of this stupid bloody lock they've put on, now I have to spend buy 800 msp in order to get past this?!
Spoke to some woman called Vibeke at THQ Game Support and, honestly, I could punch the b!ch in the face.
For those about to buy, this only applies to pre-owned copies of the game where the elite code has already been applied by the previous owner.
Yes, I'm pissed off on principle as I've still got the game cheaper preowned with having to buy the elite code than had I bought it new with it included. Gggggerrrrrraaraaaaaghggghghghghgh!!!!!
End rant. Sort of. Feel a bit better now. Thank you Dakka.
I understand that, I'm pissed off about them not advertising the fact clearly on the box though - no other games do it (though I know it's been talked about) so I had no need to assume that there'd be hidden costs.

Would you rather they had cut you off from it entirely, like most games do?
Why shoudl they care then? They didn't get any of your money.
You're not their customer.
Complain to gamestop or wherever.
Hell yeah I will.

I've never heard of any other game doing this, can you give examples? Ultimately I don't think it too much to ask for the manufacturer to state on their packaging that they've decided to charge people to play past a certain point if they buy preowned, instead of just adding on a hidden charge. It's THQ that has complete control of that; they make the decision, they design the game & packaging, they have to inform the retailer that this is the case, so why not just a spot of text or something on the case to say so? That's not too much to ask! Like I say, never heard of other games locking you out of content for buying preowned.

Indeed, given Homefront was THQ's big incursion into the FPS genre-- and it sold more than they expected regardless of the misleading things its critics often try to claim-- they'd probably do something similar for Space Marine.
In my experience Gamestation are pretty good at telling you that the code might have been used but I admit I can't remember if they've ever told me what the code is actually for.
Melissia wrote:It's part of buying games used-- you pay less, you get less.
Though it is both funny and amazing how people get up in arms about it sometimes. I mean sure, I'd love it if it were not the case, but that's just how it is. Pre-owned buyers are not the customer, and games developers have found a way to capitalise on that.
"What, if I buy a used book they'll come round and tear half the pages out?!"
"If I watch a preowned DVD it'll cut off before the ending?!"
That kind of thing.
Plus considering a month or two after release the game is often half the price (and in many cases I've seen the same price or -less- than a preowned copy (stupid GAME)), it's not that huge an issue to me.
kitch102 wrote:I understand that, I'm pissed off about them not advertising the fact clearly on the box though - no other games do it (though I know it's been talked about) so I had no need to assume that there'd be hidden costs.
Actually, IIRC Sony first party games like Resistance 3 and the upcoming Uncharted 3 now require you to buy a PSN pass to play multiplayer if you buy used. Also, the second largest publisher (EA) has an online pass that is needed to play at all in their sports games on both console platforms. THQ's version is a bit more lenient than those as it allows you to play as much as you want without paying extra as long as you don't mind progressing in ranks. Like it or not, its fast becoming the industry standard.

That occasionally happens here when there is a sudden new sale price drop that catches Gamestop by surprise. I bought a game during a Christmas sale for $20 (it was normally $40 the week prior) and beat it within a week. Gamestop was having an extra 40% trade in value deal going on so I actually got more for the game than I paid with the two deals. That's obviously the exception rather than the rule, though.

Mate, you cant really expect much help can you!? I mean, im not one to stick up for the big corportation, but, your not giving them any money!
Its like buying a used car off a guy, but when the engine blows up, checking the log book and going to shout at the guy who owned the car proior to the one you bought it off.
I bought it brand new pre-order with Amazon and it was £22.98.
In future, dont be a tight arse and its all tickety boo. As Melissa said, you pay less, you get less.
So I read an interesting article in a PC-Gamer the other day (HAHA, Gaming journalism!), and it was saying that the F2P market may be the next best thing to happen to PC Gaming, due to the fact that it solves Piracy, Used Game Sales, and various other problems that gaming has had for a while. Thoughts on that? Or make it it's own thread?
Free to Play is going to be a big thing, but won't ever take over "normal" game buying.
They do make a ton of money off micro transactions, but normally the game is fairly subpar with a few exceptions. Znyga from Mafia Wars fame realized this early on, simple numbers game has most likely netted them 100's of thousands in dollars.
I see digital copies of games becoming more and more common TBH. It's cheaper on the Devs not having hardcopies, allows them their crazy cheap sales that Steam is famous for, and with nearly everyone having highspeed internet normally means people get their games faster.
I haven't bought a physical copy of a game in months, and when I do it's normally just because I want the CE that has some nifty stuff with it, normally Fallout games.
As for the multi, I'm getting far. HB is a godsend and the bolter is... handy with kraken bolts. Plasma gun is more "fire as fast as your fingers can mash a button" and that usually works. Meltagun as a shotgun = Win. Take that Assault Marines Oh and if you ever find a Lascannon-armed Marine in Hab Block sniping your face off at extreme range, it could be me I got both perks for that thing and haven't used them.
Lag is still an issue on PS3 but at least connecting aint a b!tch anymore since the last patch, where before I had to get my friend to connect and me join his party, which was temporamental thanks to PSN being a b!tch too Oh well, onwards I go to getting more armour. I find it amusing I got more Chaos armour than Imperial
Melissia wrote:I get tons of savior kills and assists, so I got a lot of imperial armors early.
Same, it's the CSM ones that can be sort of a pain to unlock.
Hurry up and release DLC
Grudge kills anyone?
Those are worst. Revenge kills are easy, and I keep playing as Chaos more than Imperial so I've got more kills as Chaos than Imperial. That and CC kills are rewarding.
I usually get one per game on average (sometimes none, other times 2). Just make sure you grab the B on the bridge and spend the game fighting there. Since its the game winning command post generally, alot of players devote their entire game to taking it back. Same goes for the middle command post (or grenade spam central as I like to call it) on the sewer level. The other tip is that people who fancy themselves devastator experts tend to camp the same spots regardless of their getting killed. If you see someone spamming plasma cannon shots onto the middle, it's likely that they'll spend the entire game doing that easy button noob move (the only thing that I think needs to be rebalanced in MP). Take an assault marine and say hello from a different direction.
Grudge can be a huge PITA, I was still working on that one, I seem to do best as Assault for grudge though since the heavies set patterns and their pretty easy to farm.
I get grudge kills every now and then. I think its my play style really. I play REALLY aggressive and try to harass the other teams objectives as much as possible. Something Ive done with good success is when people are hammering on the middle objectives as mentioned before, Ill go and uncap their first objective. This works GREAT because most the team thinks "oh someone will spawn and retake it" so only a small few will actually leave the hard fighting to take the objective, and that nets me some good kills, not to mention to keeps their numbers down so my team can take objectives.
Good times, still waiting for the extermanatus though, havnt played in probably a week, been messing around on fallout NV again
No news as of this morning when I last checked. They had it listed as 30 day DLC on the incorrect Gamestop preorder form (which also had it as a preorder exclusive from them, also since changed). They've been completely mum about any actual firm release date.
Melissia wrote:I got ten hours out of it. What, did you quit halfway through?
No. Played on normal difficulty, spent time exploring all corners collecting all the servo skulls I could find and beat it in 4 hours... maybe you just need to learn how to play 3rd person games . The game is short and simple. I'm not an achievement whore so I have no reason to go back and find all the servo skulls I missed or do missions with specific weapons to get the achievements, I play games for the story.
The 5th hour is because I left the game running while I ran and got dinner :p
The only actual "difficulty" i had in this game was getting killed by enemy fire/rockets while I'm mid way performing an execution on an enemy. That pissed me off a few times.
I very much dislike the fad games are going where achievements become the replay, id rather have a bioware style game where I am able to make decisions and that is based on how the game will end.
Looks like PC users got a 60mb "patch" today which sounds pretty big for just a few connection issues. Anything demonstrably different with the patch for all you PC users? There are reports of less lag and a nerfed plasma cannon but neither were really confirmed on the official forums. I'll be home in a bit and be able to confirm whether or not the xbox got a similar treatment or not (doubtful though as xbox "patches" are generally quite small and take only a few seconds to download... the big changes are usually bundled with DLC)

You are aware the Steam Clock is wrong often .
I spent about 8 hours playing Portal 2, it told me I had done it in 4.
So no, don't start giving yourself a pat on the back quite yet
I've never seen the Steam clock underestimate. It does however say I played 70 hours of Magika because the game didn't close out properly and ran in the background of my PC for 2 days
Itll end well, the rest of the game is really good, why would they drop the ball on a part that they intentionally left out just to make better? Im pretty stoked
Hmmm not the best idea releasing it on the BF3 release date.I know what I'll be doing on the 25th and it doesn't involve Space Marines. What a shame.I've been hanging out for DLC for the last few days too haha

MW is generic Garbage.BF does what it says..revolutionizes online warfare.Obviously its not everyones cup of tea but personally im very into it.I will definetley be getting Exterminatus though, for the times when even BF3 become too generic and repetitive...eg after about 6hrs of rush.Very good change of pace switching between the two games, as i do with Space Marine and BFBC2....Not to mention mixing it up a little with some Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood Of Steel (working on replaying the whole fallout series)

Modern Warfare is NOT generic garbage; You have to remember, MW was what started this current trend of "Insta cool 1337 PWNZORS Shooter", and as such, it technically get's a by because it's not generic as other games are being made to conform to it's standards. However, it really doesn't show any interest in changing.
In Summery: Bozo the Clown may have the most "generic" act, but that's because all the other Clown bastards stole his stuff, drank his milk, and drove off in his tiny car.
You could argue it's better done than CoD, but I'm not even entirely convinced that the series can manage to argue that it really is wholely better-- certainly, for example, black ops for its various flaws had a better leveling system than BFBC2.
But this isn't a topic about battlefield or other generic modern warfare shooters It's a topic about bald screaming old guys encased in huge suits of armor with rocket launchers as primary weapons.
Yes that's right sorry for causing a little off topic stir.Back to the original point, as excited as I am for exterminatus mode I am nervous for Relic because they are releasing it on the same day as BF3 and I do feel that it may detract a lot from it's success. While I am aware that a lot of dedicated players won't even notice the release of BF3 it just seems like the date was either chosen so Space Marine could compete with BF3 release or it's just a coincidence and no one noticed, either way I think it would be better releasing it any other day but that one as I know BF3 will be playing on a massive number of systems worldwide that day and exterminatus may largely fall off the radar for a lot of people.I will be getting it and am still very excited and I wish it success let's just hope it's release isn't overshadowed too much by what, whether you like it or not, will be one of the biggest game releases of the last few years.
P.S I'm not trying to start a "this is better than that because..." argument this is just my opinion about the particular release date of Exterminatus.I'm a huge 40k fan as my presence here might suggest.

I need help, I'm stuck on chapter 13 where you have to "wake the Titan". I've taken out all chaos guys, pwned the chaos champion, and collected the skull in the room to the left, and I now I'm just running round looking for a switch to flick to no avail.
There is a flickering computer screen up a slope that doesn't let me interact with it and a central door that looks like it should open up (ie, it has a red light / green light thing that's red) but I have no way of opening this .
Anyone got any idea what I'm missing as I'm getting numb with nerd rage right now!
cheers

Hmm from what I remember of this part you may be bugged man, try killing your self so it loads a previous save, I think if you stand ontop of 5 vengence rounds it should suicide you.
So does anyone here still play the multiplayer?
I logged on last night for the first time in a week or so. Managed to get in a couple games of Seize Ground

Think alot of us are waiting till the 25th to jump back in if were not still playing.
Yeah, Im mostly the same. I cant wait for Exterminatus, it's the kind of mode I really enjoy playing (DoW2 Last Stand anyone? lol). And yeah, the maps do get a bit old, and sometimes its a bit weird when Im playing for a couple hours, and yet the game never cycles through to one particular map, ever.

Pretty much. Been enjoying the beta playlist in Reach a bit lately... also been sick.

Have you ever actually played Battlefield 2?
Nothing like COD at all, it was all about combined arms and had 64 players on huge maps trying to take control of maps, with veichles like jets, helicopters cars, tanks etc.
All with a focus on team gameplay, where each class has a specific and necessary role in order for your team to win.
So please don't say its generic modern warfare shooter crap, its not about infantry battles in tight corridors which every shooter seems to imitate now, but rather its about wide open battles using everything that an army has to offer

I had the same issue for Chapter 10 - House of Secrets where you have to place the power source into the cradle. I didn't have the cradle, or where the cradle was. Just the objective icon pointing at nothing.

Yes. It's a boring generic modern warfare (as in, the setting, duh) shooter.
And don't act like its vehicle section was somehow special. Other games have done that far better

The same thing fixed mine little error to.
I had a problem early on similar to this, when you blew up the orbital gun. After fighting off all the Orks, the doors to leave didn't open, and I had to redo the waves and waves of Orks again while brother Doucheus McBaggish pushed the melta-bomb'd shell again.

Hope more free DLC fixes that.
Yea thats mainly why I didnt realize there was more then 3 maps. I swear I only EVER play on the same 3 maps....wtf?

My most recent noticeable glitch was where you have to walk on to the Invictus. I walked onto it, went straight through it and plummeted to the ground. Looking up you could see the body of the Titan but its legs had disappeared.
So! I borrowed Space Marine from a friend and managed to get through the first 10 chapters of the game before having to head back to campus (no Xbox in apartment, too bloody distracting).
The game seems to be a resounding 'meh'. There are some fun parts - wading into groups of Orks with a Thunder Hammer, for instance - but other parts are pure aggravating.
The whole 'enemies as health' thing. No. I want to find the guy who thought this was a good idea and drop him from a 20 story building. If it was a 'every enemy you kill gives you back a bit of health' mechanic, it would have been better. But making it so that only a super special 'finishing move' gives you back health doesn't work, especially when you're mostly facing guys with guns and rocket launchers, or goddamn mechanical sentry guns, or when you're down to your last bit of health and you accidentally just killed the last Ork because Captain Derptus swings so slowly.
Completely agree on the health thing, they should have at least made sure that you can't take damage whilst knacking the gak out of something, I've died too many times just by being unable to move whilst trying to replenish health!
My hated it when you were trying to perform the special attack on a Nob, and while performing the looooong attack some rokkit boyz show up and kill you before you finish the attack
The game would be broken if you were invulnerable while executing, because you could just stun+execute constantly and never have to worry about dying.
The health-regen mechanic would have to be completely redone, not just make you invulnerable. But, to be honest, even the campaign on Hard was laughably easy, if you could be invulnerable while executing it would be even more of a joke. I think I died about twice on hard, mostly because I was being stupid and screwing around. Face-crushingly difficult it was not.
Hm, fair point... I think the way around that would be to have more Nobs in that you can't just stun and destroy, so you'd have to make sure that you had some normal orks left over for you to replenish your health from during a nob fight.
I actually think the execution mechanic was WHY the game worked. The fact that it had a health bar put it well above games like CoD or battlefield for me. Yes, I know, UI elements, but frankly I'm an old school FPS gamer. Give me my health bars.
And the enemies functioned as mobile health packs that you had to earn, so that was also remniscent of older games too.
I did enjoy the health bar...I'm getting tired of every game having auto-regenerating a la CoD...I was just saying it was frustrating to get killed while doing the health-gaining kill moves
I enjoyed the health mechanic, but it would break the game to make you invul during the executions. I also learned, no you can't stun then execute a bomb squig I was hoping I'd get an animation where I kicked it in the ass back towards the orks or something. I did hate it when I'd go to stun the last ork around, I have no health and then my stun attack kills him. I just sorta stood there looking at the corpse wondering "what have I done?!"
They need more enemies first If they do Orks again. We can easily assume they're considering a sequel with Heretic Titus the Confused and throwing Chaos at us again. But the game should get more enemies, such as:
- Bloodcrushers
- Alternate-weaponed CSM's
- Raptors
- The odd tank or two perhaps
If they chose Orks again I'd pray very hard for less Tankbustas. Those shouldn't be spammed, or be so accurate. That was a big concern of mine for Orks actually - the shooty units were too damn accurate. I know you're a giant killing machine and therefore a massive target but Orks can't aim at all. Why must we die so fast to Ork fire? If anything the CSM's should've been super accurate and capable of killing you with every damn shot regardless of weapon. That needs fixing...
I too liked the health mechanic. Funny enough, I play p2p so much, Id forget that I couldnt stand around waiting for my health to increase . Yes it did get annoying at times trying to refill health and your being swarmed by attackers, but that just makes the game challenging. If you dont like a challenge, then just play GTA with health/ammo cheats or hack the game. Those people also dont like challenges

So it looks like exterminatus is out on the PS3 and PC from reports but not for the 360 (my chosen platform). Anyone get it yet? What does it actually have? Any level cap increase?

Some weapons need a beef up and other weapons need to be less OP.
The campaign is a success but i wish you could use the autocannon in multiplayer, that thing is sick
Needs more multiplayer content and not to mention it takes forever to level up unless you do almost every challenge and even then the challenges are ridiculous.
