I thought they said if you were a subscriber you got both figures but if you bought the White Dwarf in the store it was one mini included.
I could have misread it though.

Actually, you're right.

So, an even worse deal!

Stick with the new 40K Starter set for a better deal.

Or, put another way, if I offered you a cup of for $5, and a barrel of for $20, you'd buy the barrel because you get more per dollar, ignoring the fact that it's still ?

I don't think I'll be getting Black Reach. I want multi-pose Tacticals, have enough Dreads, and don't want Orks. So paying $60 to buy stuff I don't want instead of $35 for stuff I do just doesn't make sense.

OTOH, I'll probably buy a Battalion as I get more SM Tacticals, a Razorback, and Assault Marines - stuff I can actually use!

I hear you John. Free stuff is great, but the plastic Terminators looks silly stiff. Makes me think of the ''parade'' marines we got back in 2nd edition.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

Have you seen the B4M and B4BR Marines? With their cocked shoulders and heads staring straight ahead, it's like they've all go scoliosis and wear back braces.

I like my Marines square-shouldered and looking down their gun barrels.

Hey, I love the BfM models. They're a little stiff, but they look just fine filling out squads for big games and the like. The last 2 guys in a dev squad, the last four guys in a las/plas squad, that sort of thing. I also have a few squads of termies that now need an extra storm bolter model to replace the AC.

I totally understand why people aren't into it, I just see myself using it. Of course, I tought BfsP was going to kick start an O&G army (that's long been ebayed) and possibly a converted Chaos Dwarf army (never even got to the drawing board, let alone off of it).

I guess I see the starter boxes as being a good price on brisket: it's a good deal if anything will do, but it's of little good if you only eat sirloin.

The BfM nobs are the worst models in there. Their expressions are goofy and under-detailed, the poses are horrible, and the just have the general look of cardboard cut-outs about them (someone mention 2ed marines...). The deffcoptas, dread, warboss and captain all look great though.

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one and they all stink.

I love those Deffkoptas. The nobs look worse than the boys which is unfortunate.

Um, right, OK.

My point was going back to the OP stating that we should rush out and buy 10 issues of the upcoming WD.

I am not a huge fan of the BfM or the BfBR marines, for the same reasons already mentioned (and if they were going to do 'limited' posing, they should have tried for something closet to the 2nd edition plastics).

But, I'm tempted by the Orks, especially the Koptas!

I agree on the nobz being lacking since they're not Nelson models

As far as free models go I can't see much to complain about there... especially since they give you a termie and nob instead of two grunt models.

Static poses? I solve those with a jewelers saw, a bitz box and some glue.

Heh. They're only free if you'd normally buy White Dwarf. For me, a free nob and terminator probably aren't going to be enough.

But, it's OK. They'll get their backs even more bent and screwed up in order to fit into Terminator armor.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for them as free figs, that's ace. But in the BfM set where they are, whilst admitedly very cheap, not free, the nobs are horrid. But, they will be useful conversion bases. I'm genuinley pleased about free figs in white dwarf though.

seriously, complaining about free stuff? None of this is making anyone rush out and buy a magazine they weren't going to buy in the first place.

Marketing tactics like this are not about making people buy the magazine, they are about making people who are already buying it or have a subscription feel better about doing so.

What's wrong with the BfBR? I think the Marines are a step up from the BfM (which IMHO weren't that bad), the commander is probably one of my favourites, the Termies are free and plastic, and the Dread is practically the same.

The Orks are, with the possible exception of the nobs, looking good. Though I would've preferred Shootas... I don't mind keeping the Slugga Boyz, I'll eventually need them.

I want at least two boxes!

Well said Blood Angel. A free sprue can't detract from the fact that WD is a compelete wreck of a magazine.

I love the fact that those members here who obviously aren't going to buy the Black Reach box set are complaining about it.

It's a starter kit people, come on.

It's for beginners to gain some familiarity with tabletop wargaming, so they get a lot of easy to put together minis and can play the game. If they like the game enough then after that they can actually buy the real deal fully poseable models.

I'm buying the set because I think the miniatures look fine. I'd have no problems running a vanilla marine army made entirely of the Black Reach marines. I probably won't do that though.

I think the Nobz look OK, as honestly, I wasn't impressed with the Metal Nobz set I just bought (other than the Waaaghh Banner and Bosspoles you get which were cool) anyway. The snap together Nobz do sort of look like boyz, but with the proper paint and maybe some extra bits I can make 'em look different enough from regular boyz.

I'll second that. Speaking from a modeler's perspective, that entire box is fodder for conversions. Plastic Koptas, boys, nobs, and a looooong overdue plastic warboss? Yes please! Static poses? Nothing a knife can't fix!

As for the freebies in WD, who doesn't like free stuff? While we can all agree the rag has slipped from monthly hobby compendium to monthly 6 dollar catalog, but really, free minis are icing!

I am going to buy WD, not because of ther free models, but because of the habit. I also want to mention that IMHO the last two whitedwarfs where a step in the right direction with the contents. I actually like the articles and the Battle rep in there. Also the tale of four gamers (However short it may be) has great potential. I am going to follow it. Also the extra datasheets for apoc are nice, maybe not nescesary, but nice...

Just wanted to point this out, as everyone and their mother bashes WD, but I think they are improving a bit now...

I'll be getting it anyway and the models if nothing else will allow me try out paint schemes like I did with my free gobbo when the new WHFB box game was released.

I'll be buying the box set anyway if only for the rulebook and deffkoptas. Everything else will be sold on to recoup costs.

I agree Lord Rav, but a step in the right direction is long overdue.

The last issue was fine; plenty of stuff for Dark Elf players, which is only fair. Still groan whenever I see more than for pages of LOTR. I hate this game, and its increasingly outlandish attempts at progress. Does anyone actually care? I know it's popular with the kids but please... put out a supplement or something.

The recent 'Eavy Metal articles are insprired. Comprehensive and clear, they are a true boon. Worryingly absent from the last issue.

Standard Bearer is a joke! He's like a boring teacher that takes three pages to state a sentence. In the words of Gollum, ''go away... and never come back!''.

Battle reports seem simplified these days. I'm sure this is reflected in the rules somewhat, so I can stomach it. I'd like to see more variation in the armies. More Tyranids, Necrons, Inquisition anyone? Studio armies are dull, we see them in the avalanche of adverts that soak the magazine. I'd like to see real peoples armies regularly.

Tale of four gamers? The original was fun; I liked the set budgets, and different styles of writing. It'll be cool for 40k but again the armies are DULL. Marines and Orks? How convienient. It's not like they're going to be out of the limelight soon. Eldar good, but spice it up with some real originality, like a Monstrous Creature 'Nid list, Armoured Company's, Kroot Mecenaries etc. Again, I know it's ''for the new kids'', but this being written by seasoned gamers in a mature style.

There's all the usual subjective nonsense there too. If one month you suddenly decide that your bases are lacking, lucky you! For most other people, making decent bases is a piece of cake. Cue half a dozen wasted pages. Terrain is stock. I like the painting showcases, seeing those killer paintjobs is stirring stuff.

The thing needs to be streamlined. Chop Jervis, LOTR, endless marine armies, Apocalypse (please! A brainless flash in the pan if ever I saw one). More induviduality, honesty, and excitement.

Anti-Mag braces himself for a broadside from indignant LOTR players, Jervis Johnson die-hards, and an entire legion of Space Marine players

I really should be spending my time more constructively.
