Rumors brought to the community by Warseer's Brimstone and MoonlightSonata

Hi all, there is some Necron Scuttlebutt floating about out there.

Early word is that Necrons may be slated for the Q2-09 40k release slot. There is another codex scheduled ahead of them but there is conflicting data on what it is (currently bouncing around between IG, Space Wolves, Dark Eldar). The info reported so far is:

* Removal of the C'tan from the Codex as fieldable units (they are still in the fluff).

* The C'tan are to be moved over to Apocalypse where they will make an appearance as much more powerful single figures (possibly with attendant new oversized Forgeworld minis).

* The big new HQ replacement for them will be entirely new tiered-level Necron Lords. Read the Apocalypse Necron background page for insight into what may be coming, but there is talk of Bronze, Silver, Gold, possibly even Platinum Lords.
Lords are said to have multiple special abilities and options, and certtain levels of Lords may re-arrange the Force Org chart for certain units, making different army builds possible. An example of an option was an advanced necrodermis, allowing the Lord to mimic his C,tan masters (and conveniently allow for the use of the existing C'Tan minis).

* There will be Necron Lord named characters.

* The rest of the army is described as getting a small number of new units, and having several existing units rearranged by Force Org category.

* In general, the Necron army is desribed as being somewhat "buffed".

~Interesting if true, and these would seem to dovetail nicely with the last set of Necron rumors we heard several months ago. A Q2 release slot seems odd unless there is some issue with mini or codex development with several of the other codices which are older (Wolves and Dark Eldar mainly). Still I would applaud the move if only to rid the game of the wonkiness and arguments that We'll Be Back can generate. As usual, Caveat emptor folks.

Sweet. I'm glad I held onto my Necrons (that I never put together).

To be honest with you, I felt that GeeW would yank the C'Tans with this possible new codex. But, at least they are going to include them in some fashion. Here's to hoping that we might see the Dragon.

I can see the Lords changing around the Force Org. will be like how some of the Special Characters can. Flayers as troops, more Destroyers, etc.

So, any guesses as to what the new units might be? You know what they say, "You throw enough crap at the wall, some of it will stick." Maybe GeeW will see what we post and takes some ideas? (yeah right)

Speculate away.

I myself have always thought thatthe tomb spider was way to small of a model to be concidered a mocterous creature. I imagine it being almost as big as a defiler. that and the model kinda sucked.

Changes I'm hoping for include:

Remove current Phase Out rule (incompatible with 5th edition mission objectives)
Re-institute Phase Out in a better way (units that route phase out?)
Make the Necron rule include Stubborn, so that Defensive Crons can return.
Improve Necron CC units (wraiths/pariahs/tomb spyders/flayed ones)
Weaken Necron anti-infantry shooting (immortals/destroyers)
Improve Necron anti-tank (I know, an odd request, but 5th necessitates it)

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

I just realized. The new dial a trait structure with a special character insures special character sales (I know a duh moment to everyone else). So these rumors seem quite certain.

The new lords sound really interesting, i am curious to hear more about this. And the ctan removal at first sounded crappy but now that you can basically use them in the same way albeit with different fluff is cool. If forgeworld does real ctan modela ala the greater deamons, i am really excited!

i cant wait to hear more rumors, i always wanted to make a cron army as it would be so easy to get one together and have them look nice too. Plus i really dig the models, apart form the crappy tomb spider. that model has so much potential to be awesome but what we have is really terrible.

It sounds like Necron Lords/C'tan will work a little like they do in Dawn of War.

If these rumours turn out to be true I might end up getting a necron or two. Sounds like they're in for a better, more customisable force.

I'll be interested to see what kind of "named character" Lords they come up with. I mean, it always seemed to me that both 'Nids and 'Crons didn't really have a societal system that encouraged that sort of thing...but maybe they'll have "Lord 010001110111001001100101011001010110111" or "Lord X51STFU".

I think that calling it "HeroHammer" is riding that pendulum swing all the way over to the other side. Considering that the Necron codex had about as much personality as a bowl of oatmeal sans raisins, cinnamon, brown sugar, and well, anything else to make it interesting, I welcome some HQ upgrades for this army.

As far as the Nids go, those names come from an Imperial perspective. With the Necrons though, those who became Lords were allowed to keep much of their personality. I can see them keeping their names or coming up with new ones, though it might still come down to Imperial perspective again.

I just hope WBB is replaced with FNP. That would go toward somewhat buffing them. As long as they get a buff in personality, I'll be happy. There is a reason I never collected more than 1k of them.

Oh, and gimme my suicide scarabs back!

My problem is not adding character to a slightly flavourless army, it's making high-priced heroes the de facto choice for an army build. I didn't like it in WFB (Major hero on flying mount FTW), I don't like it in 40k.

Most (or all) of these rumors are from the thread on Warseer, I believe.

I'm hoping Phil Kelly's involved with Necrons...his skill set is perfect for what the codex needs. But since we haven't heard anything about him working on it, I'm afraid we're going to get Alessio's more cookie-cutter approach to list design.

I'm at least glad to hear that units are moving in the FOC. That's one of the primary problems with the current codex...too many units butting heads in some slots, while other slots have defacto choices.

Im really curious to see what the new units they add into the codex will be, that would really help spice things up so long as they were useful, the crons have options now its just that a lot of them are unusable.

And I could be wrong, but I don't think we'll be seeing a renaissance of that in 40k, at least not in solid competitive lists. Troops play too important of a role in 5E for folks to rely on their high-priced hero to table their opponents. Will we be seeing more high-priced heroes in Codices? I imagine we will. Will we see them on the battlefield? Quite possibly. But will it be because they are HtH or shooty monsters? No. I see the trend of high-priced characters being taken because they allow you to configure your army in ways that you otherwise wouldn't be able to do - Sammael and Belial, already, and the rumored new SM characters. Seems to me that the new Necron lords fall right in line with this.

personally I'm hoping for a change to the basic Warrior stats, so that they're less like MEQs.

I agree with above posters that tomb spiders would be great to make over - turn them into a new plastic kit, about rhino sized, with some weird game effects (not just the usual transport and shooting like other 'vehicles'), e.g. force fields (perhaps a forcefield which disrupts enemy shooting?) or generating whole squads of scarabs, destroying terrain, or something equally unusual

I hope you're right. I also have a problem with GW encouraging people to invest more in special characters by giving them these somewhat over the top personal special abilities, it just smacks (once again) of pushing people toward expensive toys and then wondering why they still get beat. I do think that with SM, they've found a neat middle ground between removing traits altogether and leaving them in, by allowing SC's to 'unlock' traits after a fashion. But I'm worried it's going to turn into an expansion on the "all Eldrad, all the time" theme.

Bringing it back to Necrons, it just seems that the current list relies on Lords and Liths to be viable at present. Rather than making Lords more lordly, can we not see some better or rather, more well designed, troops choices?

Nah, I can certainly agree with you there. It would be nice to see more interesting units that are the core of the army.

I like the Lord info, as it sounds like a more official version of what I've been using. Deciding which ones were bronze and silver. I was going to make a gold lord which I used the C'Tan rules for but never finished him. Been using "Herald of the" names for them as well, Awakening, Resurrection and Storm being the three I have now.

I don't terribly mind the codex I have now, but I would be all for one that gives me more flexibility and options to play around with. Not to mention cool new Lords I can model up.

As far as new units... I'd like to see the Tomb Spider made Carnifex sized and given Dreadnought rules. I can't really think of anything else new I would make off hand.
