I am new to the game for several years, I quit at third. I've been playing some games at my FLGS and well playing several people I've noticed some "bending" of the rules as well as just people generally out and out cheating. The biggest thing I see as movement. People constantly and consistently move models more than their 6 inch movement.

Another is people not having their codex's saying certain models getting X number of attacks then you reading it and it turning out that this is not true at all ( a good examp of this was a champion of some sort getting 6 attacks!!).

Generally what are some good prevention methods, I know knowing the rules is one of them and standing up for yourself, but how do you deal with just casual things.

What are your opinions of it, although it may not be out and out cheating it still is annoying.

The only tip I have is shooting with pistols to check charge range or rapid fire weapons. " Helping the opponent move by placing a finger where the first model goes to "speed up" gameplay.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

every time one of my regular opponents finds himself with a case of elastic tape measure i throw something at him, the bigger his infraction, the heavier the object.

s'working quite well so far. Got him down to the standard random half inch of "really can't be arsed to worry about it too much"

Familiariase yourself with other codexes so that you know when something isn't right. Don't be afraid to call someone on something, remember they may have made an honest mistake.

Watching out for people cheating on movement and the like, well you can either have it out with them or refuse to play in future.

I don't have a huge problem with it, since a cheater won't last long in my FLGS. People will hear about it, they will wach him like a hawk in games so's to form their own opinion about it, and they will call him on anything that looks fishy. Me? I'm not afraid to call someone on soemthing. You can question what someone is doing without being a Richard. However, in some cases of temporary insanity, it's just best to let it go. Take a look at what they are trying to achieve, and see how much of an impact that it will have on the game as a whole.

Had this one guy who had some kind of breakdown while playing. He rolled a scatter die for a battlecannon shot, and the arrow pointed dead in line with the length of the board. He measured his scatter, instead of toward the short edge, toward the LONG edge toward me. I pointed at his die. He insisted that it was pointed toward me. He hadn't moved it, or anything, it's just that we were looking at the same thing and seeing two different things. It was wierd. I brought over a couple of other long-time players. I showed them what was going on. I stayed cool, but shouting ensued. I ended up shooing my buds away so they could go cool off, have a coke and a smile. I let the guy take the shot. I whipped his ass anyway. I mean, I never did figure it out, why he was doing it. Wierd.

I've never really had a case where someone was blatantly cheating up a storm, and I couldn't get around them. My reactions really depend on what I want to do.

Here is a tip: don't play against cheaters! Mistake ok, but as soon as it becomes clear they are cheating you should simply stop the game and tell them to f themselves!

Depends on the situation. Stretchy Tape Measures can be an honest mistake, particularly in Fantasy where wheeling etc is unlikely to be 100% accurate.

I tend to see far more blatant cheating, such as rolling to hit, then quickly grabbing as many dice as you can, and regardless of result claiming they hit. Of course, done fast enough, there is no way either you or your opponent could possibly have known for sure....

Attacks can get complicated, which is why I find being friendly helps. Example? In a challenge against my opponents Dwarf Lord, my Savage Orc Warboss got 8 Attacks at S8. How? Shagga's Screamin' Sword, Frenzy, 4 attacks basic, and 3 enemy characters within 12". Opponent asked, and I explained showing him the items entry in the Army Book. All was fine.

Another one, which is all too common in Fantasy, are the amazing, invincible Dispel Scrolls. No matter how many have been used, whichever Wizards' head you kick in always seems to be the one to have exhausted their supply. Funny that! Is easily overlooked and innocent enough, but a real pain in the bahookie when you are trying to weed them out of your opponents hand. All this takes is some kind of token next to each Mage, or a simple declaration!

the way I would do it would be to get a pic then make a poster of sorts (something like an old western wanted pic) with accusations listed in ye olde print. Put a few up around the store or give to players and the offender will soon get the point. Of course better make sure it was actually cheating and not just an honest mistake or it makes you look like a bit of an ass.

That's why you pick up the misses instead. Anyone picking up hits is either trying to
play fast, or trying to blow smoke in your face.

I dunno malf, a lot of new players do that. I did the same thing my first game, and picking up misses was the first bit of gaming etiquette I ever learned. Especially if you have a bunch of people who don't have vets to shepherd them, a gaming group can pick up some wierd habits.

it cheating.

Now that I think about it, I know the best way to beat cheaters. Did it once, discovered it by mistake. Was taught how to play, in part, by this one ass who thought cheating was the way to teach people. He always won, and loved it. All 5 games I played before I realized what was going on. Anyway, I changed shops to one not populated by Richards, and went on playing. Learned "proper". Tourney comes up, and it's wierd that there is no capacity for a draw. Win or lose, strictly victory points. I played that ass, and beat him by 13 points. I didn't rub it in, no need to. He was livid.

While true, jokergod; most people who feel a need to cheat at such a thing are trying very hard to escape reality in the first place. Self- examination, I would think, would not fit in very well with that much escapism.

Thats just sad and illegal. Just take his dice, getting overly worked up over a game just shows how lacking your real life is.

First and foremost... know the rules yourself and have all the armies quick reference sheets on hand. The reference sheets are freely available on the GW site. Or if you're lazy go here... http://pitoftheoni.blogspot.com/2008/07/5th-edition-faqs-reference-sheets.html

I tend to just assume that it's a mistake and correct them. Once they've realized that you know better they typically stop because they're embarrassed, but if it continues than I tend to get a little more stern in voice when correcting them.

I would hope everyone would be courteous in assuming it's a mistake before calling it cheating. We all make mistakes time to time and if you say you don't than you're not a cheater, you're a liar.

How'd the jail time go?

They let you play 40k in jail?

I wonder if they let you play with little dolls too.

Probably would, given you'd be wearing a dress...

Hmm they probably won't let you bring in the models in the cell so you would have to sneak them in using those unmentionable places. Good luck with hiding a monolith up...youch...

I can tell you people rarely make the mistake of cheating plus you could drink booze there as well... Not a good mix for gaming.

Life is really too short to play with cheaters. Cheating is just a way of getting around the rules. If you lay down more conditions, the cheater will just find ways to get around that as well. Sadly, getting a cheater to reform is only something the cheater himself can decide to do. And why would he if people keep on playing with them?

Take a page from the Amish and shun cheaters for games.
That's my take on it!

Here are some common causes and " cheating" or "misremembering"

Usually it is in line with "this guy has X number of Attacks"

Do you wanna straight up be like "Yeah, I don't think that is true at all" or do you wanna try a diplomatic approach.

I'm a new player I have had players outright try and cheat me, now wether it was "intentional" or to their benefit I don't know.

Now fotunately, I read the rules I know them very well and I played 2nd edition.

I just see a lot of common "misreadings" etc.. on who has what.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

What's nice is when you have the ability and opportunity to "cheat" back. Once the start down that road, they have no basis to complain when you do the same...

"Oh, I'm just playing the way that you're playing."
