Tomorrow (7th July) is my birthday, and I thought I would do something shamelessly narcissistic and would finally abuse my dakka powers for evil with this thread...

Dakka takes up a very significant amount of my free time to keep things running smoothly. We are approaching the 2 year anniversary of yakface and I taking control and in that time there has been about 10 hours of downtime, 3 server moves, doubling traffic every 6 months, a new forum that kept all the old posts, a fully functional wiki, dakka's great custom gallery and countless other tweaks. We are on version 5.23 (starting at 5.00), and each 0.01 release usually has about 30-50 bug fixes or changes. No profit is ever taken from dakka as we try to stay at operating cost so that dakka doesnt end up as an ad plastered nightmare. Because of this, my only payment is ego boosting and seeing people enjoying themselves.

As such, I thought I'd ask for a birthday present from dakka and would love to see this thread become a dumping ground for things you like about dakka and to be a general dakka group hug. Dont worry about posting feature requests here, I'll be starting some threads in a few months for those when the time is right as I have way too much stuff on my todo list to even think about other things for the moment.

So let's share the love Dakka, give me a nice birthday present to read tomorrow when I wake up

(I'll move this thread to OT after my birthday since that is where it really belongs)

Happy Birthday!

I've only been on the site for a few months, and I mainly lurk and post in a few threads, but I love it. It's easily got to be one of the best, if not the best, Wargaming site on the net! I'm really glad someone showed me the site, and both you and yakface do a brilliant job.

Yea happy bday.
And to keep up with your request, I simply love this site. Theres more tutorials then one sane person could read. The gallery is just a god send. I like that when I need help on something there is always a bunch of ideas coming from everywhere to help out. Dakka is a giant think tank of funny to me.

well, I'll tell ya what dakka means to me. Dakka is one of a slim handful of sites that help me keep sane at work. I work all over the world, and usu. have some kind of limited internet access via satellite where ever I end up. Dakka helps me spend weeks and weeks away from home, working every damn day, and still keep in touch with my hobby and a community of peopl ewho at the very least provided information and different POV's on my hobby as well as entertainment and facepalms galore with their antics. Dakka is a tool, dakka is a point of familiarity, dakka helps me keep it all together when I would otherwise become swamped with ennui.

LB, I appreciate what you have wrought here, make no mistake. Dakka is ever-changing, multi-facted, and fun. The sheer number, quantity, and depth of mental defect exhibited by some of the members; at the very least, provides a psychotic melange that makes Austin look like a population of Joe Normal.

Happy birthday!

Great easy and generally friendly forum, with active moderators to manage the occasional clown.

Possibly the best thing is the active group this place has going to teach hobby & gaming skills, not to mention the amazing hobby artists that frequent this place.

When I decided it was time to join a wargaming site it was no contest. Dakka was easily my top choice since it's:

1. Easy to guide through
2. Great responses
3. Responsible admins

Happy birthday legoburner and thanks for organizing such a great site.

I'll bite. From the new additions, the gallery is far and away the most badass module. Given the time and support I think it will really either 1: take over the mini painting crown from CMoN or 2: force CMoN to use your awesome gallery code.

It's really the best image hosting option for wargaming related pictures on the web (really for any pictures, but limited to wargaming)

Also, I like the ignore button, and the crazy good image system.

I found Dakka a little over a year and a half ago. Lurked a bunch then joined in. Since then this site has been a pretty central thing in my online life.

Even though I don't even have an army right now (painting WHFB, waiting for space wolves) I still come here just to chat and see what's up with the hobby. It's THE BEST hobby forum on the internet. I've rolled around the internet quite a lot and nowhere else have I found a more intelligent, helpful and generally entertainingly quirky community. I love all the personalities here and international community. Great work legoburner, and happy birthday.

Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.

Thanks to both yakface and legoburner. Great job fellas, and Happy Birthday legoburner!

In celebration, I think we should be allow to swear in this thread, link to porn, and post all of our favorite illegal model casting techniques... That would be super awesome. Just a thought.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Happy Birthday.

I like having a gaming site that's on the more mature end of the spectrum, and the fact that you've got a good mix in the community, where gamers aren't necessarily attacked for wanting to solve the game. That, plus the custom code work that allows Dakka to offer a lot more than any of the other forums I've seen.

As someone who has coded and run a hobby site for going on 13 years now, I know that you (and Yak) will never get the kudos you deserve for the time and energy spent working on the site. It's hard sometimes, after you've banged your head against the code for a couple of hours, only to hear about yet another bug. So, for all the work you have put in, and will undoubtedly continue to, thanks. May your shoota never run empty.

What I like best about Dakka isn't just the uptime, or the speedy response on any and every page load, it's the posters. ArchMagosAlchemsys, Snord, Drew Riggio, TASK, KWade, JTS, Barpharanges, Clousseau...

Greetings,

The incorporation of the whole wiki system as a user generated database of Warhammer/40k/other things is a particularly great concept and is, by far, the aspect that first drew me to this site (I remember it vaguely from the bygone days of aught 9) it is also the aspect that drew me to actually register, and perhaps even post here.

Happy day of womb escapage.

Regards,
Thor.

Happy Birthday!

DakkaDakka is the premier fan/player/modeler exchange of 40K, Fantasy and other games on the web. Yes, there are others but this is the one that means the most to me.

I can come here and get ANY question answered regarding so many wargames (whether I like the answer or not).

I can browse the Gallery or troll the P&M threads and be inspired ten times over for my own models.

Speaking of my own models I even have some people admire my crack-pot Ork GW-Wheel hating vehicles which in turn fluffs my own ego.

I can argue for days with people that take themselves FAR too seriously which in turn reminds myself not to take them so seriously.

The threads aren't police-states run by brown-shirts. They are open and warnings seem to be handed down pretty fairly overall. People are allowed to make asses of themselves!

Simply reading these threads and practicing tactics has help me ramp up ahead of so many other players in my vicinity I truly feel like I'm standing on the shoulders of giants.

Heck, I can even bitch about Video games I don't like or rave about ones I do!

I also get to talk about pretty much whatever I want in the DCM realm. Being a DCM allows me to be a part of all of this which allows me to also take some small pride in helping you and Yakface keep this baby going.

Thanks Legoburner, you two have really given us the presents!
