Hey. Just stopped by Fantasy Flight games and saw this announcement for a new revision of WFRP.

Forever alone

In WHFRP, you all roll peasants and die of cholera.

Hopefully not in this version. Looks like fun, and I hope it compares to Dark Heresy well, because it might be why I don't hear much about it.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Looks like it has turned into a dice and card game. What with the 'special' dice, ability cards and cards and tokens and all the other 'gamebordy' crapola. No thanks, they just killed it for me. 2nd Ed. will live on!!

Just from the description, nothing like the mechanics that run DH and upcoming RT. They're purporting a 'new and innovative' system. The 'story dice' just seem to rub me the wrong way.

Wow.

That's bad.

A sad use of the WHFRP property, really.

Is that going to be the ONLY WHFRP game now?

Ugh!

Propiatery dice can be a problem as they're too specific.

I hope they don't do this to Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader, unless it's a different game.

Why would they mess with something that, as far as I can tell, has been working quite well so far?

My gaming group finally adopted WFRP in part because we've tried 4E D&Ds cards and abilities and whatnot and found it to be pretty much junk. We won't be switching back to a system that uses 'character stances, action cards and custom dice'. That's some sort of Descent/4E hybrid - NOT WFRP.

This is a different beast and won't be applied to DH / RT.

While people in my game club love WFRP, I found the fact that you ran away from combat because it was so lethal a downer. What's the point of a role play game if you end up acting like you would in real life?

I agree entirely. If I wanted to play Descent or Warhammer Quest then I would/will.

Guess we will now never see that Ulthuan sourcebook I always wanted.

Or any actual sourcebooks seemingly, just endless new cards and more and more "special" dice. No thanks.

I sure as hell hope those DH looking minis we saw the othe day aren't some grim hint of things to come.

It would seem odd to release RT, a game that works with DH, have all these RT and DH books ready to go... and then go and replace it with a card/miniature game. No, I can't see FFG being that stupid. They're not GW.

And I have Warhammer Quest. Don't need another one.

I sincerely doubt that FFG is going to do the same with DH and RT so soon. Doomsayers be damned for once you fools!

The sink.

I really like 2 edition WFRP. But I'm also really interested to see how this plays out. Sounds like the new edition characters will be more heroic and, hopefully, more capable. If nothing else I have a ton of 2nd edition books, so I'm good to go even if this bombs.

Two things I don't like:

1. Core set is really expensive. Seriously, $100?

2. I'm not sure I like how much this game appears to be influenced by warhammer online. Reminds me too much of the World of Warcraft/ 4 edition DnD comparison.

I'm not sure what everyone's fussing about at the moment. We don't know what the actual mechanics are like. The description of the new combat dice seems to just be a quicker way of showing how well you succeeded/failed. Not too dissimilar to the percentile system when you think about it. Not sure about the other dice yet

To be honest, by shifting skills etc. to cards, it makes no difference to them producing new books, it just makes it easier for multiple players to reference their character information at the same time.
I'm looking forward to seeing how it all works.

Bleh. If I'd want to play heroics I'd pick up D&D. WFRP should be grim, gritty and deadly because that's what Old World is all about. The world is dead, it just keeps on running with momentum - making it anything else takes ways the special factor in WFRP.

I hope they keep the 2nd edition in print. I still have to buy a lot of the new supplement and I don't have the money for those right now. I'd hate to have to hunt them through eBay later when they double in price.

What's the difference between 2nd ed and 1st? I only played first, wayyyyyy back in the day, like 1992-ish, so I assume that was first edition.

2nd & 1st are very similar -- 2nd really just tweaked a few of the weird quirks in 1st, making it a little more logical.

This new version?

It sounds like it will be pants.

(Yes, I just like saying that! Got to love those British sayings! Of course, I really do believe it will be, sadly...)

If something is 'pants' is that good or bad? I mean, 'being pants' is -generally- bad (unless it's not you being pants, then it's hysterical).

When it was first hinted that this might be happening via Graham McNeill's blog a little while ago I was worried.

This news report has done nothing to relieve those worries.

Mainly because I had the misfortune to try Dragonlance's take on adding cards to a RPG.

I just don't see it working, as others have said it starts to feel too much like a boardgame.

Just hope they don't do this to DH/RT, I can probably make do without Warhammer anyway, ...sadly.

Ok, comparing these pics to the mystery pic that has DH stuff on it, I am now convinced that DH is about to have this done to it as well.

I wish we knew more.

Omg, in a horrible sense... its Warhammer Quest without the cool bit.. (the board and figs) Oh well, Warhammer RPG goes bye bye for me.

I doubt DH and RT will get this treatment anytime soon. In all the interviews with FFG about DH and RT they describe the upcoming books for both lines, and not a core rules update. In the D6G interview they were describing books over one year out in time. I'm gonna say a rules update isn't planned until they fulfill those promises, but if this new WFRP system proves successful than we can expect a new version of all the 40k RPGs eventually. I'd say this is testing the water for all their RPG lines. I'm sure they want to convert a lot of their board game customers to their RPG line. I have to believe that the board games sell way better than their RPG games, which have always been a niche market.

I will state that I love WFRP 2nd edition, but a lot of my books only really serve to strengthen my collection of Warhammer lore. Most of the time when I run a game of WFRP, my roleplaying group get turned off by how underpowered they are. Though it is fun to run for the GM. It's refreshing to see the players have to think up alternatives to the usual tactics of hit it with my sword and sort it out later.

Looking at those pics again, it occurs to me how much the box art is like the WaR collectors edition box art.
