A short review of the new GW box.
The first thing i look for in new Skaven is how well they rank up. The storm vermin are a fatter than the plaguemonks, but only a little, and rank up ok, but you still have to be careful. Next are the tails that are very thin but are not as brittle as i had feared, so far ive removed and glued half of the 20 and no problems. I cant say the same for the blades on the helmet crests, so be carefull taking the heads off the spru.
Flash, and press lines from the molds are good with very little cleaning required, there are a few places where you get the GW 'it happens' flash but thankfully only in one or 2 places and isnt recurring on all the peices.
There are a good few peices in the box, but nothing overwhelming, and the wight of the new box is even less than the old clan rats box, so the price is typical GW Idiocy, there is no way 'NO WAY' this box is woth the 38 euro its priced at.
Moving on to how the minis fit together, the arms are ball and sockett type , so alot of potential for posing just the way you want it. Some of the heads have less fur on one side of the head so the head has to be turned a certain way, but thats no problem.
the sheilds and the recomendation that they be on the back or hanging from the belt is just rediculus, and there is no resonable way most can fit in any place thats appealing so GW dropped the ball on this. My greatest problem with the kit is that the main boddy tail and feet all come in 2 peices that divider the body in half. this isnt a problem for the lower half of the body, but the skirt, and armour where the 2 peices meet looks terible on some and the shoulders leading over the back where the 2 halves meet can have a sizable gap, if your not careful which is just silly. So some good points and bad, but nothing a little green stuff wont fix in a snap.
On to the coolness effect: As each Stormvermin can be posed differently and there are a limited amount of options for doing this id say you could make some really dynamic Skaven so A+. Command also has a far bit you could do with it, but (and i really hatee this one cause it woud have been cool) the pointing hand on the champ and the cool Axe are both left handed, there are some options for the right but i would have prefered two axes (left and right)
Rules: each comes in at 7 points and is no longer 0-1 choice, they are the best armoured and over all best skaven unit stats wise, so if you need something to push that bell these are your boys.
Wrap up:
Well if your die hard skaven, then this WILL be a box you need, and drool over, if not i cant recomend it, its just too expensive for a casual collector, sure it has some cool stuff, new innovations in assembly, and is about the best quality GW has put out in a long time ( i always critique GW harshly in this), but 38 €? no, no way.

Badum tish!
On topic, what´s the height of them? are they taller than clan rats? And would it be possible to stretch them (I´m thinking with GS, but not too much work..?)
Oh, and since noone else has mentioned this, you could just get them from Maelstrom, I hear their prices are rather better?

I do, however, hope this thread won't devolve into yet another " GW prices are too high!" We all get it. They're high. Having every other thread change into a b!tch fest about GW's prices won't change that...

For some reason the price doesn't bother me too much...I guess since it's a 20 model box set I'm not quite as put off by it.
And would it be possible to stretch them
Doesn't that count as animal cruelty?

Stormvermin are literally head and shoulders over Clanrats in terms of height.
Ranking up is indeed good, but still requires a little forward planning. For example, the Standard Bearer will require a Halberd being held 'at ease' behind it.
Arms line up nicely, as they have a 'nick' for want of a better word, ensuring they sit in more of less the right position. Biggest problem so far is Queek having to go in the corner of the unit, due to the Standard Bearer once again.

The pic isnt good or anything but it does give a pretty good scale of an old clanrat and the new storm vermin.
Also in response to the Aduro the old clanrat box i belive had even more bits, but you cant realy go by the bit ratio as the new clanrats all have the heads preattached, and it really does look like a Gnobler kit, IE: just the bare minumum. And as ive said there is no weight to the new stormvermine a plague monks box weighs more.
One other point of note comparing the WD to the actual box, on the UK one, page 17 there is a champion with a axe and pistol. my question is where in the helll is the pistol? its not included in the box. any way sharp phonecall i think tomarrow to complain, but aside from that heres that scale comparison pic.

The army book says that that stormvermin with the pistol is a conversion unfortunately. My biggest problem with the whole skaven release is that there is not a single generic lord or character release (only SC). The stormvermin do look quite cool but as previously mentioned, queek does not rank up too well with them (or anyone)

Id suggest kit bashing a warlord from bits, you get 2 of each stormvermin head, and 2 of the command stuff so kit bashing is simple. i was already thinking of using a storm vermin body for my new warlord, but i agree, a generic hero box or a lord box would have rocked. And thanks for the clarification on the conversion, in the WD there is no such statement.
Off Topic: has any one else notices that the new army book only contained the minis for the skaven's first wave of releases? where are the pics of the dang mortors catapult and all the rest of the juicy things.

The biggest letdown for me, was that they didn´t make new globadiers.... I mean those guys are ancient! And also, the older ones actually looked better... :S
Thanks for the scale shot, That´s the last thing I needed, so I´m gonna go get some Stormvermin tomorrow.

Agreed with the globadiers, although I feel the same about the warpfire throwers, I was hoping for a plastic clan skyre box with all the attached weapon options (like the ig heavy weapons teams but skaven).

A discount on a overly priced item still makes it over priced.

And once again, I feel the need to point out that the Stormvermin are the same price overall as the other recent Heavy Infantry boxes.
Black Orcs. 10 for £15
Dwarf Miners. 10 for £15
And so on, until Stormvermin where you get 20 for £30. And considering they are Skaven, why would you want any less than 20 in a unit?

Someone has brought this point up in another thread .
"A discount , doesnt automatically make something cheap. It just makes it cheaper"
Why would you want to field less then 20? You wont.
But would you only field 20? not really , maybe 30.
If box of 20 is no cheaper than 2 box of 10 for £15 ,
i rather they split them into 10s.

OK, it's still not cheap, but it's still cheaper. Would you rather pay the full price from GW?

Trouble is, then they become cheaper on a per-set basis than Clanrats, and one could argue sales of Clanrats would suffer by comparison.
I quite fancy a unit of 40 to shove the Screaming Bell around. Tip some Skavenbrew down their throat, hope for a 5/6 results (Death Frenzy) then give the bell a toll, cross your fingers and look for a 13.... Do you fancy 120 WS4, S4 attack on your unit? I bloody don't!

K semi question ,
Dont the bell go infront of the unit pushing it? How many out of the 40 storm vermin actually get into base contact with enemy?

Doesn't matter when you ring a 13 up.
Every model in the unit gets to attack, regardless of btb contact etc.

If it lands on that i guess.
But if it doesnt , then you have 40 storm vermin babysitting a bell -_-

And I cannot think of a better unit to do so.
Clanrats might well be cheaper, but you get less oomph when you get the favourable roll. Stormvermin hit a damned sight harder.
I think the Bell comes on a Chariot base (not sure, but will find out Friday next week!) so I reckon I'll have 4 Vermin either side of it.
Chuck in the Banner of Clan Superiority (+D3 combat res) and a BSB with War Banner (+1 Combat Res) and you have a unit more than capable of massacring any and all opposition, no matter how hard they are. Star Dragons, even in the Flank or Rear, have some way to go to win the combat (all going well, even without Ranks I'll have a static res of 6, with a minimum of 4). Hell, with Ranks my basic Res is 9, and thats before I even get to hit anything.

Mad Doc: a bell does indead come on a chariot base, and i agree that there is no finer unit than the Stormvermin to push it.
however your never going to convince me that the price on the storm vermin is anything but idiotic, compared to this or that, the fact remains the price IS Expensive IMO for what you get. (compare a plague monk box) Its a rip off, and a blatant one as well.
Nuff said.

Until you hit my oldblood with blade of realities and unit of 11 saurus with spears.
Oldblood vs bell- 3-4 leadership tests (Bell has Ld of 0) and auto die with 6 wounds gone, no ward, regen or armour saves.
Then the saurus go to work on the no longer unbreakable rank and file.
