So, we all know that some armies will always be part of the 40k stable - Eldar, Guard, Orks, CSM and of course SPESS MARIENZ!!!
Others, however, get much less love. Inquisition and Dark Eldar forces haven't had an update for years, Tau and Necrons are so badly nerfed by current rules (and the current meta) as to be almost unplayable (note, I said almost, I don't need a detailed critique of how they can be used if you want to) and the much loved LatD now exists only from FW in Siege of Vraks. Add in the many armies that have been referenced in the fluff and never produced (Eldar Exodites, Skitarii, Demiurg/Nicassar, Knight Households etc) and you have a whole slew of possibilities that will never see the light of day.
So the question is this - knowing that GW will never produce them all, what would you be prepared to 'Squat' (eaten by nids, disappeared into the warp, bravely ran away-away to another galaxy or simply retconned out of existence) in order to ensure that the one you want will someday be made?

I'd squat:
Dark Angels
Blood Angels
Black Templars
Space Wolves
and I'd fold Inquisition into one book.
I'd probably also fold Daemons and Chaos Space Marines into one book.

Probably the various marine chapters and make them one book with proper rules and fluff a course. Otherwise I don't think any other army deserves to be squatted.

I would Squat them all for a chance to start over.
Right now GW seems stuck in a loop of trying to catch up with themselves. I think maybe a fresh start with a reworking of rules and codices.
Then maybe we could have combined codices without the loss of fluff or flavor.

I would not squat armies so much as roll them up. One super-big Codex for all Imperium (Space Marines, Sisters, Guard, maybe even Adeptus Mechanicus), one super-big Codex for all Chaos (Space Marines, Guard, Mutants, Cultists, etc), all-Eldar (Craftworlders, Harlequins, Corsairs, Exodites, maybe Dark Eldar). Tau could take all the smaller armies into the Greater Good allowing people to field Hrudd, Demiurg, whatever. This leaves Necron and Nids. Squad the Cron, I guess, and diversity the Nids

Totally agree. Start over, switch to 10 sided dice to give us more variations for everything without the need for so many special rules, reintroduce movement characteristics, give us codexes with all unit info and rules on one page (not 3).
Actually, that's just about it. I'd be willing to permanently squat DE for the above.

I'd squat all marine chapters into one massive codex with separate army lists for each; merge chaos and CSM into a "Chaos" codex (with different army lists); and merge daemonhunters and witchhunters into an single inquisition codex with separate army lists. In exchange, everyone gets current-gen codex updates within 18 months of each new edition of the main game that are more "updates" rather than massive rewrites of their rules where new stuff is awesome, old stuff is crappy, and they play radically different than they used to play. As an ork player, I would like more clan-themed army list options and more/better troops choices (including the return of my namesake Skarboyz).

OK, OK, unfair question. The OP has a good point, shelf space, budgets, production facilities are all limited so expanding the line means dropping something else.
The marine varients don't count since they take up very little shelf space, you'd have to kill all 4 of them to make room for a new army. Or 1 for a varient army like Death Guard.
Dark Eldar similarly don't count since they're not at this time on shelves.
So now we have a tougher question, one that really requires sacrifice.
I really want Lost and Damned/Chaos Cults/Traitor guard. I'd give up Daemons for them, then Necrons.

Its not all models though. Its time spent to turn all those space marine wet dreams into a jillion codexes. I really wouldnt mind if marines got a bigger codex, with some extra space for special "X chapter only" units. That might even work for Orks and chaos. IG could have their own codex, they're sufficiently different. maybe merge eldar and DE in a same fashion? Then give the other races smaller codexes to match their (whats the word?) lack of variation.

I'd squat Daemons for LatD, like Kyoto. I'd squat the special marines (throw them into the main codex) for quicker codex updates. I'd probably try and merge the Inquisition codices, and throw in AdMech. I'd squat the C'Tan out of the universe because they suck.

Squat:
1. Dark Eldar - unloved and unnecessary, never met player expectations
2. Ultramarines - boring and redundant base version when we have far superior Spiky / Monk / Knight / Viking / Winged versions
Add:
1. Traitor Guard - Mutants, Traitors, & Cultists (oh, my!)
2. Ad Mech - Skittari, Robots, & Knights (oh, yes!)

Daemons of Chaos was the most unnecessary book ever, so push them back into CSM. Throw all the SM chapters (Blood Angels, Black Templar, etc.) into one book and drop the Space Wolves (that codex was AWEFUL).
As to which to squat, I would like to half-squat Tau (main empire eaten, Farsight Enclave remain) and then fully squat Dark Eldar. I mean, it has taken them this long to get a new codex, I was just waiting for them to get "squated", not to mention that Dark Elves in space is a lame idea. Necrons I want to keep, just for that nice little thing that lurks beneath the sands of Mars...

Squat all in the name of the Inquisition!
Seriously though, despite my Imperial leanings, I could never bring myself to completely Extermisquatus an entire race of 40k. Variety is the spice of life, y'know. (And apparently, also for grimdark )
At most I would find myself losing the carry-on SM chapters ( BT, BA, DA, SW ect) and rolling them into the main Vanilla dex, and I would like the Inquisition (all three ordos and their militant arms) in one book. Other than that, I'd throw the deamons back into the warp (the CSM dex) and stop there.
Really, for me it's not a matter of cutting ones losses, it just cleaning up shop.
BTW, Dark Eldar still have a spot on the shelf at out local GW store. Just saying.

I would get rid of all SM except SW. Well, not get rid of them but just make them all PDF only. Then I would combine Tau, Tyranid, Eldar (both shades), and Orks into Codex: Xenos maybe with an appendix on Chaos Demons. Similarly, Codex: GuardConversions would be evenly split between Traitors and Loyalists. CSM would cease to exist in favor of all Daemon Prince armies, making their codex a handy one pager--probably also PDF. Finally, I would split Witch Hunters and Daemon Hunters into at least four separate books each.
I fully expect that this post will land me a job with GW slightly after Jervis reads it and slightly before his head explodes over how I am the only person capable of succeeding him.
