Argh, I hate obsessively checking Dakka (being in between jobs at the moment) and not finding anything new in the fantasy section. We need more traffic over here! Any thoughts on how we could get it?
Especially in this discussion section, imho... there's nothing wrong with "Should I start fantasy?" or "What army should I start?" but you'd think we'd have more to discuss, as well!
I was so starved for fantasy yesterday that I went over to asrai.org for some wood elves action... but I prefer my beloved Dakka when we get more traffic...

I think the main issue is that Dakka is a predominantly 40k-focused site. A pity, too, because I can't really stand most of the WFB faction-specific websites. They tend to be a bit...'fanboi'-ish.

I am with you on the sad lack of fantasy traffic! Perhaps the lack of fantasy threads stems from the disparity between the 40k fluff and the WHFB fluff?

Having a good amount of traffic on a forum like this is like having a weekly party. If you do not have a critical mass of regular users, people will show up, look around and seeing not many people there, will leave.
It's sorta' the same here. If you don't have a lot of interesting topics and people discussing them, people will take their opinions to somewhere where they are likely to get more responses, like Warseer.

If I really want to read fantasy stuff I go to The Warhammer Forum but I don't really post beyond the battle reports section. Warseer has a quite active batrep section as well. Dakka is home though, and I enjoy stomping around our armylist section and posting questions here than over on those other two. (Maybe it's the color scheme ... and that I get to be a dreadnought here ) - Salvage

Indeed, its dissapointing. I think it stems from that generally older people play WHFB, who have jobs and such, which conflicts with things like posting on the forums, while 40k is generally infested with children and such.
I'm finding it harder to be on here atleast 1-2 times a day with school, a job, my GF, family, etc.

sadly thats true.
on my local gaming club, almost every kid in my age plays 40k only.
anyway, any idea on how to make this theme a little more alive?
i was thinking contrast with character profiles.
e.g. archaon vs malekith.
and we could decide whos the most powerfull character in fantasy.
what do you say?

@rockabill-gr That sounds like a good topic, but you should start a new one and not change another in the middle of it.
Back on topic, I totally agree. I have caught myself several times a day trying to get my "fix" and seeing the page the same as before. I need to step it up and start looking at other topics other that just the ones about DE, WE, and Dwarfs. Even if I am not interested in a specific army or topic, there is a good chance I might come across it in a game.
The nice thing about Dakka is the people are cool, so even if a person is not sure that a topic is going to take off or not, they should go ahead and post it anyway.

Yeah, there needs to be more WFB talk. But as it has been pointed out, Fantasy players are generally a lot more busy due to their age and thus commitments than the younger dudes who can spend the entire evening painting, going on to forums, etc.

I do think it is a big result of the relative lack of fluff surrounding fantasy I mean most of the fiction is centered around Gotrek and Felix which are repetative and averagely written at best (the later ones). The Legends series is good but the trouble with Fantasy fluff is that Fantasy is just one world 40k is a whole Universe so there is more there.
Also Captain Solon is not a fantasy player and he clogs up a lot of the 40K stuff with complete s***.

I agree with the problem of fluff for fantasy. I kind of have a warriors of chaos force, (5 horseman and a box of warriors) but I only started it because of reading the First Law trilogy. It really had nothing to do with GW's background, simply excitement about the idea of creating some of Bethod's Carls. With better fiction and background I could be swayed to increase the force, which means more interest in fantasy posts.

The problem is in having meaningful discussions over the game/background without devolving into simple "Who would beat who" threads. Flooding the forum with tons of those types of questions tends to be as bad for the forum as having no discussions at all.

I can see both sides... of course we want discussion to be meaningful, but hey, I enjoy a "My club is bigger than your club" discussion as much as the next guy
For some reason, I found fantasy more intimidating to get into than 40k. It could be that the rules are a little more complicated, or that people playing it do seem to be older (and have often been playing for a very long time), but there was some kind of block there.
It might be that there's a similar block here, even on the forum... where people don't feel qualified to post and put in their opinion, or feel embarassed to ask certain things. I know I was (and still am, a bit)! It could also just be me since I played 40k in 3rd edition and "naturally" know more about it... but I think there's something about fantasy that gives it a steeper learning curve and that carries over into people not as readily taking the plunge and posting up threads/replies.

I tend to lurk a lot in here. I post in the Painting and Modeling a bit more often than I do over here. I've got about 50000 questions about fantasy but I don't know the environment on DakkaDakka too well yet so I'm not sure to expect the "yeah, this is how this works and it will do even better with that." or the " pfft noob l2p." so i tend to steer clear a bit. plus, I don't even know what to begin to ask about half the time because my mind runs in about 50 directions at once and I forget something as soon as I think of it.
btw, I'm building orcs and Gobbos. anyone wanna trade some cash or orcs and goblins for my dwarfs from the starter set? I'll post this in trading post also but figure this is the most active thread on the WHFB sub forum, might as well try.

You'll probably get a taker over in the swap shop, I know most people only want one half or the other! I've definitely seen the gobbos up for sale/trade on the forum... which probably means there's someone keeping the dwarf half, and possibly looking for more.

QFT!
I used to play Fantasy back in 5th/6th edition and then didn't play for almost a decade. I currently have about 8 games of 7th Edition under my belt so I most definatly feel like a n00b. I would love to jump in on more discussions going on here, but I honestly don't know what to say. Fantasy has an insane learning curve compared to 40k. It's just so unforgiving when you mess up or forget something. Our Fantasy group tends to be much more laid back than our 40k guys at my FLGS. Not nearly as much competition and it's easier to get answers to questions in general.
And not to derail this thread, but Archaon destroys all. GW used to do "Royal Rumbles" in WD where they would pit all the special characters in the game against each other. Archaon always won.

I'll look in more often I think. I have more fantasy armies than 40K and I've not really tried to collect them!! I h[code]ave lizardmen and undead, a load of unpainted Bretonnia, Skaven and dogs of war. The only ones that never really appealed to me were orcs and elves.

For me it's because Fantasy is currently a much worse game than 40K or Warmachine/Hordes, or WOTR (which I sadly don't get to play much). I love my Orcs and Goblins, and enjoy playing my Dwarves these days, but Fantasy is so badly broken as a game that it's just not as interesting to me.
Maybe 8th will shake things up a bit. But even the latest books seem really poorly edited and so on.
There have been some great threads on here though, and great discussions. It's just sorta sporadic.

I know that certain armies are very overpowered, but I find fantasy much more enjoyable than 40k. I love the strategy involved, and if an army is hard to beat, it gives me an even greater challenge.
That's not to say I'll want to play someone taking an unfair list... but most of the people where I play seem to be reasonable, and I've quickly found out those who are not, and can avoid them if needed

I've only just started. True I was pretty active last week in the army list forum, but I don't really know most of the rules and stuff that just happens. I suppose if you want to boost traffic you guys could go for the post first, think later approach. Or simply adopt the idea that no question is stupid unless it involves a custom unit.... Those are always fecking horrible. Or beefing up anything in Daemons, I mean you guys all talk about how its nasty piece of work, I read it yesterday, and it left me thinking "Does GW just wanna have fantasy consist of the one faction that also exists in 40k?"
|
Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...

RiTides: I mostly play at tournaments (my mates are all 40K or Warmachine players), so I tend to be up against tough lists all the time.
The Irish scene is very friendly though, so I always have a good time at tournaments, but it usually points the flaws in the system to me bigtime.
