Under the couch

It's April (Under The Couch's 5th birthday!), and that means it's time for another Shades of Red painting competition!

It's also a mere 2 weeks since I got married, and so I thought it would be fitting to run a competition that's themed around togetherness. And so, Shades of Red 5 is entitled: Dynamic Duos!

What we're looking for is a pair of miniatures that look like they belong together. A wizard and his familiar, a pair of matched assassins, a hero and his faithful sidekick, twins separated at birth and finding themselves on opposing armies, the timeless wanderer and his eternal nemesis... The possibilities are endless.

Up for grabs is a first prize of miniatures to a value of AU$165, and a random prize of a AU$50 boxed set. Entries close at the end of April.

Full details and information on how to enter can be found here

congrats on getting married!!!

this sounds like a good reason for me to paint something that isn't a Space Marine...

quick question...
the rules on your site say this in the description:

"What we're looking for is a pair of miniatures that look like they belong together."

and then say this in the entry rules:

"Your entry can be a single miniature from any manufacturer..."

which is it???

i have minis wrapped in, or holding, their familiars, or i have minis with a seperate sidekick...
i prefer the two options i have w/ familiars, but could paint one with a sidekick in a pinch...

i hope you get a good turnout for this comp...
thanks for putting it together, and offering generous prizes...

cheers

Same questions and comments as above, excluding italics. Is the judgement all painting-based or is any of it going to conversion?

Editing-last-years-rules fail...

I've fixed it now. It should have said 'any two miniatures'...

That's a very good point. I had initially envisioned two separate miniatures, but there are a lot of models out there incorporating two miniatures into a single model, like the Ork Warboss with attack squig... I've added a line allowing that sort of thing as well.

Judging for all of the SoR comps has basically come down to a mix of painting standard and how well the model fits the theme. Conversion isn't specifically considered, but would potentially add to the theme.

Darn it. I'm no good at painting, and can only barely pass at converting simply.

Keep in mind that there's a random prize as well... so you don't have to be the best painter in the comp to win something

This may be a question with an obvious answer, but should the models be predominantly red? Or is it more that they should include red?

I couldnΒ΄t see any mention in your rules...?

Nope, no red required.

Incorporating red into the entries started out as the theme for the first couple of comps, but we've moved on to different themes for the last few.

So the 'Shades of Red' is now just a reference to the website in general (or the red couch that I use as my logo specifically).

Very cool. I'm not gonna promise I'll get something in, considering my general painting motivation, but I'll try.

Any scale up to 54mm. Within the appropriate ranges, any model is fine. We've had at least one tank entered in a past comp.

Do we get extra bonus points for fitting none related minis together as a duo? assuming they look great together?

If they fit together well enough, the judges shouldn't even notice that the minis aren't originally related...

One clarification question:
Do the models need to be properly based, or can they be put in a piece of terrain(within scale) as a sort of vignette?

Display bases are fine. The comp's not linked to any particular game, it's just about the miniatures, so how you base them is entirely up to you.

Keep in mind though that display/diorama bases can potentially be distracting if they get too big for the miniatures. The focus should be the minis themselves, with whatever they're standing on enhancing rather than taking over.

Would you say a wrecked tower would be distracting for two human sized models?

It would really depend on how it's done, how big the tower is, and so on.

So basically grabbing extra items from other completed projects doesnt equal to more effort or more plus points?

Grabbing items from other completed projects would make it invalid as an entry. It has to be something you paint this month... (Which, obviously we can't enforce specifically, but the requirement for it not to have been shown elsewhere before the close of the comp, and to provide an unpainted pic with the finished entry are intended to at least keep it pointed in that direction).
