Am I truly the only one who likes This particular genre on Dakka? It seems "punkish" for lack of a better word or older types of music are the majority's favorite genres.
This thread can be about anything so long as it has something to do with Black Metal.
I guess I will throw in my favorite Albums and a song.
You don't think this is just hilariously over-the-top GRIMDARK?
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

In all seriousness, I do think black metal is over-the-top GRIMDARK, with Satan this and Darkness that. I prefer good old fashioned AC/DC myself.

Whoa, whoa. Cheese ain't on Dakka's Most Wanted. Shadowbrand, you have been letting us know about this Norse/Metal/Norwegian thing for a while now, however. I feel like you're a bit stuck. Maybe because you're feeling down and bored? Have you ever listened to Wagner?
Alright, Manowar is sweet, only girly men diss Man of War, but this is not the place for it.
Just had to point that out.
@Manchu Not all black metal is Norwegian and I guess I'm just shallow when it comes to music. Albatross and FITTZ took me around the Punk and Jazz worlds kind of. But I just go back to the kind of music I typically listen too.
I guess I'm just a person who can't change.
I've also noticed I'm abit more... Aggressive then usual.

It's a phase, bro. We all get dark and moody at some point in our teenage years.
I haven't yet, but I blame that on my distinct lack of social interaction.

I'm basically a loner, the only reason I think my band took me in was because I was I guess, the only drummer in town who would play for them. They did let me name the band after something in 40k though...
I used to have a decent handful of friends but then I changed schools.
Also I have this gut feeling the Mods will crush my thread anyways. :/

Oh. Well then, I have nothing to say that can make you feel better, I'm afraid. Toodle-pip!

To get back on topic however, I never much understood black metal(or perhaps heavy metal as a whole). I do like to listen to the occasional Hellhammer track though.

Yeah I know that, acctualy I havent listened to much Black metal since I was in junior high and that was...along time ago, long enough I had to look some of these up just to remember them...Heck most of these bands didn't even exist the last time I listened to real Black Metal, I kinda remember Venom, to be honest when I'm in the mood for the kind of music to inspire nightmares I go for some Dark Bluegass or some realy old Pimitive Mountain Gospil
'corse I'm almost twice your age so most of this stuff is old school and out of date for me, but I do live by The Hive Minds Motto "Evolve, Consume, Evolve"

Yeah and that phase usually lasts until you die with the odd pleasant spike at a good Christmas or when you find $100 on the road or something. Ask any old guy.
OT - Black Metal is OK, but there is only so much abuse your ears can take. I still enjoy the classic Slayer albums and the Melodic Death Metal out of Sweden, but that heavy, heavy, raspy voice cookie monster stuff is just a bit too much. Although I do like Dimmu Borgir quite a bit.
@Shads - Hey, if you're interested in expanding the types of music you want to listen to, why not try Prog Rock? It's not as a massive a departure from Extreme Metal as say, Jazz. It's also pretty deep musically and thematically, so maybe that would appeal?
I can recommend 'In The Court Of The Crimson King' by King Crimson, and 'Pawn Hearts' By Van Der Graaf Generator as a possible starting point.
^^ - The Arch Enemies are good. I liked their previous singer compared to Angela though (Starbreaker and Aces High are some of the best covers ever. Especially Starbreaker). I'm a bit spoiled as I bought all of their CDs here and they have the bonus tracks.
Mayhem is hilarious in buddy's metal documentary being about 20 beers past bedtime. Immortal...I just can't get down with them. When I see make-up on dudes with long hair I think two things: Cross dresser or KISS.
When I was a teen, I used to listen to numetal and death metal pretty heavily. And I swore its all I would listen to. I still do on occasion, but I just cant stomach most of it anymore. I swear Ive turned into my father, and sometimes that is scary
I was going to post a local black metal band.....but the only song they had on youtube was imo the worst they ever made. Damn now I not a contributer
Ah Black Metal a genre I cannot take seriously to save my life. Despite this, I like some of the 'half genre' Black metal bands, like Summoning or Equilibrium (Bathory I'd also add there aswell). All the same, it's among my least favourite of the metal subgenres.
On a side note, Arch Enemy black metal? Er sorry no. Melodic death for sure.
To quote the Channel 4 show, Peep Show: "I'm cancelling out of shame, like my subscription to White Dwarf"

Thats another reason I dont really care for the metal category. Everyone is wrong as to what area a band falls in. Its annoying. They arnt this...they are that, like *insert band*
no no no nooooo, *insert band* is nothing like *random category* *insert band* sounds like *insert band* and *insert band* is a strong example of *insert category*
well maybe that would be true if you werent a friggin panzy sisy boi! YEA I SPELLED boy BOI! *insert band* is TOTALLY *insert category*
The bad thing about Black Metal is its general low quality. I love metal, real metal, stuff like Iron Maiden, and while that touches on Black Metal themes, Number of the Beast for example, it does so as part of a broad spectrum of topics covered. Most Black Metal I have encountered bangs the Satan or Pagan drum just to try and stir up religious controversy and appear rebellious to cover a dirth of talent.
It rarely if ever works. Most fundies haven't heard of Black Metal, they dont go to those sorts of concerts and few Black Metal bands make it big enough to draw attention anyway. Those that do such as myself don't care, as we are of different cultures, if we can share our hobby time with Bloodthirsters and not get offended why should Cradle of Filth have anything to rile.
So Black metal keeps on saying the same old stuff and gets ignored, I am yet to find anyone in Black Metal who has much talent, Angela Glossow being the one one I can think of, and she raises attention mainly because she looks different to what you might expect. Frankly most Black Metal is a bit like worn out TV series that add new hot lesbian characters when the plots dry up to stop jumping the shark. If you cannot sing or play the guitar properly enough to do Rock shout something Satanic to whatever riffs you can manage and you have a career in Black Metal.
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.
