I used to be in to it, and i still know often talk with a Norwegian Black Metal vocalist/guitarist (Aptorian Demon) and still get in free when he comes over for a concert, but i really only go there for the free beerz he treats me to and because he's completely insane, in a funny way.(met him on UT2k4)
But yea, I grew out of it pretty quickly, seeing Cradle of Filth live at rock am ring (2006 i think) only made this worse and i couldn't keep myself from laughing when they started to play Nymphetamine... but Liv Kristene(which is totally awesome and hot) was replaced with a big fat opera... blimp....thing.....
These days i listen to pretty much anything. I do sometimes listen to black metal every now and then, but that's mostly just nostalgic value and nice guitar work.
I've been stuck on Machinae Supremacy and Machine Head for the last 6 years though...
I was into black metal briefly during my highschool days.
I currently work for an online music gear retailer, so I'm surrounded by fantastic musicians in active gigging bands all day long, and because of this my musical taste has evolved into listening to the subtle details of music vs the overarching theme behind any given band.
A poster above mentioned that he couldnt find any good black metal bands, that they were all terrible musicians, and as much as broad generalizations like these hurt to admit to, I have to agree.
I want to like Black Metal, there are even members from 2 different black metal bands working in the same building as me, but I just can't turn off my ears to the crap black metal bands push through their amps or onto their records.
THE HORUS HERESY: Emprah: Hours, go reconquer the galaxy so there can be a new golden age. Horus: But I should be Emprah, bawwwwww! Emprah: Magnus, stop it with the sorcery. Magnus: But I know what's best, bawwwwww! Emprah: Horus, tell Russ to bring Magnus to me because I said so. Horus: Emprah wants you to kill Magnus because he said so. Russ: Fine. Emprah's always right. Plus Ole Red has already been denounced as a traitor and I never liked him anyway. Russ: You're about to die, cyclops! Magnus: O noes! Tzeentch, I choose you! Bawwwww! Russ: Ah well. Now to go kill Horus. Russ: Rowboat, how have you not been doing anything? Guilliman: . . . I've been writing a book. Russ: Sigh. Let's go. Guilliman: And I fought the Word Bearers! Horus: Oh shi--Spess Puppies a'comin? Abbadon: And the Ultramarines, sir. Horus: Who? Anyway, this looks bad. *enter Sanguinis* What are you doing here? Come to join me? Sanguinius: *throws self on Horus's power claws* Alas, I am undone! When you play Castlevania, remember me! *enter Emprah* Emprah: Horus! So my favorite son killed my favorite daughter! Horus: What about the Lion? Emprah: Never liked her. Horus: No one does. Now prepare to die! *mortally wounds Emprah*Emprah: Au contraire, you dick. *kills Horus* Dorn: Okay, now I just plug this into this and . . . okay, it works! Emprah? Hellooooo? Jonson: I did nothing! Guilliman: I did more nothing that you! Jonson: Nuh-uh. I was the most worthless! Guilliman: Have you read my book? Dorn: No one likes that book. Khan: C'mon guys. It's not that bad. Dorn: I guess not. Russ: You all suck. Ima go bring the Emprah back to life.

Well look its the smugtroll. Nobody forces you to like it, and what makes a musician good? it depends on the people listing to said music... And waht woul you define as good music? Lady Gaga?
@ Shadowbrand... They are NOT Bm they are soft man metal. But yes that discussion can be fun at times. And yes they are the instrumestns of the blessed lord Slaanesh And yes im a metal head, and darned proud of it!

I prefer melodic death metal, Dethklok FTW! I haven't really listened to black metal much tbh though, just a few songs here and there.
I suppose I should give it more of a try before I make my decision.
I'm not a huge Black Metal fan,I like some of it,Dimmu Borgir in particular, simply becuase they seem a bit more "textured" than the average Black Metal band, and as a "musician",I can appreciate them on a technical leval.
@ Shadow.
Enjoy the music you enjoy my friend, and never let anyone convince you that you have to "grow up" and listen to Barry Manilow & "lite rock",I'm 40 years old and I've been listening to Punk/Oi! since I was 12 (first Ramones album),if you enjoy it...keep listening.
That being said, don't limit yourself...keep an open mind concerning music (and indeed everything),you'll be amazed at how much you find you enjoy.
I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
I just watched a Dimmu Borgir vid on youtube (I take what FITZZ says seriously) and it just made me laugh. Looked like a poor 40k fanfilm. This stuff isn't for everyone. Doesn't mean it's for no one, however.

I think Manchu, you found the newer Dimmu Borgir and the band has basically shot itself in the foot. Now the stuff they did when they still sung in Norwegian owned.

Thanks for the compliment my friend,it's nice to know that I'm taken seriously.
I should however have clarified that my coment concerning Dimmu Borgir was ment that "with in the Black Metal scene,Dimmu Borgir are (IMO) the most musicly advanced (perhaps that isn't even exactly accurate)....more accurately,I play guitar and bass, and becuase of this I can recognize a more "textured" song structer in Dimmu Borgirs music then I can In most other Black Metal...alot of the stuff they play is quite technical/complexed...even if it just sounds like a wall of noise.

It's definitely harder to laugh at a joke told in a language you cannot understand. I don't mean to carry this too far. I can see that if someone doesn't "get" this genre then they probably won't give it much a chance. Whether that's fair or not is kind of beside the point, however.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Fitzz, I'm not very knowledgable about musical technique. I know that some speed metal is quite theoretical, taking its cue from Bach's ideas concerning counterpoint. That stuff seems technically impressive to me (in the same way that a really big explosion is impressive) but I can't get into listening to it.

I can definatley understand where your coming from Manchu, alot of Black Metal just sounds like "GROWLROARGROWL!!!" to me as well, but if I hear somthing that I can appreciate on a musical leval..I'll give it a whirl.
I also think that part of my "understanding" of Black Metal comes from my own love of Punk/Oi...yet another Genre(s) that one either loves or hates...or is totally indiferent about

@FITZZ - True... Hell, I like Yes, ferchrisakes! I appreciate the hell out of musical virtuosity - but for it's own sake?
Nah.
Saying that, I have been known to enjoy Metal - I am rather fond of Meshuggah and Fear Factory for example. I'm not too keen on all that Pagan/satanist caper though. I will give Cradle of Filth SOME credit - they seem to be aware of the slight ridiculousness of the genre they inhabit.
At the end fight scene of the first one, I thought "Ringwraiths." Is that a bad thing? But OT: I like the instrumental parts moreso then the lyrics tbh.
