Hi, just back from Conflict Scotland (which was fun) and this is just to publicise a small 40k group based in Glasgow, mainly operating out of each others front rooms.

We are mostly in our late 20's and early 30's. I think I'd speak for most of the group in saying that we enjoy playing with more mature folk (tho not necessarily older) who just like playing the game and enjoy the story round the game.... rather than power gaming, winning at all costs or taking the game too seriously (thus boring the opposition to death). This may come across as a bizarre form of elitism... which it is! That's because we want to scare off the idiots! (by idiots I mean power gamers and probably people with no social skills too)

So if you're bored of the power gamers, but love 40k and want games with some thoughful souls, or perhaps you want to meet some like-minded 40k players with social skills (I know how ridiculous this sounds), do get in touch. The last year (after meeting some superb guys on Dakka[thank you Dakka]) has convinced me that there are people out there who share these views and they are welcome in our group!

TT

PS we have a facebook group called warhammer 40k for glaswegians. Please join it if the rant above makes any sense to you. If not, don't take offence.. its nothing personal!

Hey mate,

Good to see another Glasgow gaming group on Dakka!

I am part of small gaming group operating in the South Side of Glasgow. Amazingly, we also have social skills. Although I didn't make it to Conflict Scotland, a couple of members of the group did and finished a very respectable 23rd out of 120-130.

The majority of us play for the fun of the game (a couple of us really like to win), and we have a nice mix of armies in our group. We are all in our very late 20's or early 30's, have full time jobs, most are married, some have kids and we all know how to wash. Although our group mainly plays in Glasgow we have a member in Edinburgh, Dundee and one in deepest, darkest England.

Due to the fact that we just cant bring ourselves to play in the Glasgow GW store, we tend to host games at each other homes and alternate venues when needed.

I will check out your facebook group.

Cheers,

Dave.

People with social skills who wash all in the one thread!

This is too much for me. I'm away for a lie down.

Remember these are weegie social skills we are talking about, where any pub visit is liable to end up in a melee. Thats the trouble with cross Glasgow hobby events, as a minority hobby it attracts people of different backgrounds, which means they cant all go to the same pub together. IIRC there are only two safe neutral drinking holes in Glasgow.

Ah yes but the madness of this place is part of its identity.. take that away and it wouldn't be Glasgow anymore.

Anyway the west end is awash with non scary non denominational bars. The key to enjoying Glasgow, in my humble opinion, is to avoid Sauciehall St.

Yes, we didn't want to become one of 'those' people. lol

Mature players sounds like a blessing considering the local GW store only offers a 16+ night (or is that 17+?). Being more interested in the fun and the fluff (gay joke pending) I don't want to have to smack some 16 year old elitist who read the rules wrong.

The key to enjoying Glasgow, in my humble opinion, is to avoid Sauciehall St.

Give that man a medal!

PELVIC THRUSTING at your six.

Hi.

I'm actually coming to glasgow uni next year, and by the sounds of things, I'm a little young for your groups, although, I share the same views on gaming. Do you know of any likeminded glaswegian gamers in a younger age gap?

Thanks,
Mav.

Hey guys, I would urge you to get on the facebook wall and collar someone into meeting up or just getting a first game!

Mav - I'm not sure about younger groups. Glasgow Uni used to have a roleplaying club but it had limited wargaming (although that is based on 12 year old information!). There are a few clubs in the Glasgow area such as St. Aidens Warriors in Clarkson. Also Hamilton howlers I have good reports about them too.

On the other hand there are a few younger folk on the facebook group, I just haven't met them yet! You might want to join the group and give Tama Liertz a shout, he's a 1st year Glasgow Uni student and always up for a game.

Hi,

Just posting up here to say hello and making my intro. I'm returning to the hobby after buying WFB and 40K recently. I don't have an army yet but plan to build a Emperor's Children force for 40K, and either Skaven or Orc for WFB. More tempted by Skaven but I know a man with an Orc force for sale. Might be too good an offer to pass up.

Cheers
Stu

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Just come back from a trip to Glasgow, I rather liked it the city to be honest. Was staying with friends in Paisley, which was fairly dodgy for a non local. Stabbing capital of Europe apparently. I had to watch by back all the time with the jakeys, fortunately most just wanted to 'chat'.

Popped into the local GW there on the way back to the station.

I look at your great club and weep.

Mainly cause I'm a few years too young for your groups target range. I'm a Glasweigen (South-Side), I have: a fully painted (except LR Crusader) BT force, an unpainted 'nid force (save a few gaunts) and a half way painted CSM force. I prefer to play games with more mature players (cause they have actually read the rules) and I am a relatively mature player myself. I have a knack at winning but at the same time I honestly don't care if I lose, since I always try to play to have fun.

I have endured playing at GW Glasgow for the last couple of months, but, with a much better grasp of the rules, I seem to no longer enjoy playing there. This is mainly due to the fact that: many (10-15 year old) players use me as 'the rulebook' 'cause they never bother learning many of the rules; The only decent competition I get are from the ocassional adult that braves entering GW Glasgow and that I'm a couple of months to young to be allowed to go to the gaming night on Thursdays. Thw only reason I continue to visit GW Glasgow is to see the couple of friends I made there.

I also really enjoy painting and converting, so any army I present is normally not fully finished.

Well that's my CV, I hope it might sway you into letting a younger player join your ranks (and help him escape from GW Glasgow)

P.S. I also share your same dislike of Power Gamers.

Great to see so many like-minded players in the Glasgow area. Like brother bartius says if you're up for a game, post on the wall of the facebook page and someone will take up the challenge.

Also I'd like to re-iterate that its not so much age but state of mind that's they key thing. So people like gathering storm are most welcome.

I still havent got round to hamilton howlers yet but i've heard its a really good club.

Hi All

I am just about to take my first steps in Warhammer 40k and thought I would say hi, I live in Glasgow, I'm 30 years old and once I started to get my army built up and learn the rules, I hope to be able to have a game with some of you. I have joined the facebook page but wanted to say hi on these forums too.

Hi, this might not be the best place but I was looking for advice regarding getting started in 40k. I will be going into
GW on Tuesday to buy my first set of stuff, my plan is to buy Assault on Black Reach, citadel starter hobby kit, black undercoat paint and the Space Marine codex. Is this the best kit to start with? I plan to build a Space Marine army?

@Robertm80: AoBR is a good start but unless you can find someone to sell the Orks to the hemingway is right, you might as well buy a used SM army.

My first Army was half-used, I bought the Tyranid Battleforce (which remains my only purchase from GW for my Nids) then I got a second hand Trygon (off a friend at GW Glasgow) for £18, 10 Genestealers and a Broodlord for £12 and a set of the new Raveners off of Amazon for £15 (unwanted gift). I ended up saving £60+ on models (enough for a second Battleforce )

The boxed set is probably not the worst place to start Robert, but as hemingway says if you have an idea which army you want, ebay can easily save you 50%. Otherwise its terribly expensive to build up your force.

I have a very vague idea of what army I want, very vague. I know I want a Space Marine army first but not sure which Chapter or anything like that just yet. This is all stuff that I am investigating as I learn more about the 40k universe.
