Whoa there are a lot in glasgow I didnt know of.

I don't usually game with others then my close friends because my army isnt "what you see is what you get" mainly because I refused to rip the arm off my person to put a new gun on them later on, then I lost the spare parts. Then a lot of stuff was broken or lost in the move ;-; But I would love to play other people and get more into my hobby.

I use a Tau army and I have a DE army that I have never used. (I'm a huge fantasy addict though, even though I only play 2 people constantly)

Also the GW store scares me as I'm usually shy to new people and I don't want to walk in, put down my stuff and be told to "GTF" from a 16 year old with a god complex. I like the staff mind you. Its just scary doing new things lol. If you want my profile, I'm ginger, 5ft 11' ,Live in Kirky, size 34, wash regularly and I'm just out of university lol. I'm told if you look in my eyes in a good day you can see a hamster wheel. As my attitude, I like to learn new things and I am very adapt at losing well - lost +15 times in a row to a empire army and I never give up even if i have 1 model left. Never once had a hissy fit.

God damn, the amount of edits I had to make just to correct spelling was horrendous.

I'm a Scottish gamer myself. Is playing competitively to win such a bad thing that it condemns you to have no social skills and whatnot? I have a thriving social life and I play competitively, because my circle plays competitively and I enjoy the challenge in new tactics, list building and outplaying my enemy.

Why the hate?

I was actually quite excited when I read the thread and was enjoying the thought of a new gaming circle where we could sit down, maybe open a cold bud or something and have a fun and relaxed game, but when I saw this contempt for competitive play I was immediately turned off the prospect. What is it about playing to win you don't like?

The part when a good night is ruined over a argument in a ruling just because the person wants to win that badly?
Dont get me wrong competition is not a bad thing and they dont think it is -as a I gather so far, Its the attitude that sometimes comes with it. So if you actively state you are for 'casual' games those types wont appear. Who wants to ruin a good game and let a pizza get cold over a cover save argument?

Playing "competitively to win" is not equal to Power Gamer, WAAC or TFG. If it was, I'm sure I would have been kicked out long ago I thrive on the challenge - but I want it to be about the game and the tactics (and I guess luck), not who can bludgeon who with whose rule interpretations or secret wargear (especially when I consider I'm still learning all of the nuances - and omissions - of the rules)

I guess, like most things, try it and see - I'm sure we won't be offended if it turns out we are not what you are looking for

For the record I'm not equating power gamers with poor social skills - far from it!

The criteria was no power gamers and no social 'cases'. I stand by that definition (these people are going to be in my living room at some point, right?!).

The bottom line for me is that this is something I spend my leisure time doing. I'm personally not interested in using that time to indulge idiots who don't get that it’s a game. Do I play to win, er, yes, doesn't everyone (though being Tau I understand why this is questioned)? Do I play to have fun with a good bunch of guys* - yes, undeniably. To me the latter eclipses the former in importance.

But Arakasi makes a good point and that is you don't really know till you play someone.

So if I did turn up with my "powergamey" army but with the attitude that it's a game and I want to have fun (i.e. the attitude everyone should have) would that be ok or would I be met with scorn and asked to change my list?

See my local club (in Ayr, if any of you are interested) plays competitive, so it's just what I'm used to.

I would not have a problem with your list as long as it is within our agreed upon point level and any problems are agreed upon before the game (As I currently can not follow the rules of WYSIWYG anyway, it is one rule I must have my opponent agree to waver or Im out of a game)

As long as you did not come to play a game, be a pompas ass, complain/moan/tantrum when something has not gone your way. Ie I get lucky and kill the commander and you stab me lol. I only care about the manour of which the game is played in. I do not want to travel a few miles, waste my money, my time and my night to play against a absolute bastard of a player.

I am sure most of the players also feel this way as they hold games within their homes.

Hi guys.

26 yr old living in Hamilton. I point blank refuse to go to GW stores to play as I remember doing it when I was 14 and the "I MUST WIN!!!!!" attidtude scared me. Having only just started collecting again I barely even know the rules anymore let alone argue over them lol. Me and my brother are keen to watch a few games and get the hang of things before we start to play anyone but each other.

I have to say I agree, I wouldnt be keen to play with anyone that demands my models have exactly what is on my list. Dont get me wrong, I am trying to outfit them with the wargear I want them to have but I've been avoiding a lot of the little bits and peices in an effort to just get my army up and running.

I regularly have the "play to win" argument with my friends over various online games we play. I play for the sake of playing. Yes I would like to win but if I don't then its no biggie, the point is I had a laugh and enjoyed blowing some things up. They on the other hand are of the opinion that there is no point playing unless you are going to win.

If anyone in the Hamilton/East Kilbride area is havin a bit of a game night give me a shout as I would be keen to observe, learn the rules a little better and get to know some folks. Game board creation ideas wouldnt go amiss either...ours is hysterical.

Well, I'll man up and post here. Everyone else has. (Or does everyone in Glasgow play 40k? ).

Now, I'm only 13, but before you pack your bags and leave, I'm far from the 'stereotypical war-gamer kiddie'. In fact, people like that embarrass me. That's why trips into Games Workshop are oh-so-painful, testament to why I haven't been in recent memory.

I'm relatively new to Gaming, but I've been interested in Dawn of War, in the Black Library Books, and in Collecting for a while. I'm a member of the Hamilton Howlers Gaming Club.

I guess I'm posting mainly to ask if anybody wants to attend. We have a Site, although it's rather new and primitive, so here's a link!

Hamilton Howlers

Hope some of you can make it some time. All the details are there, under 'Contact Us'.

Big Glaswegian 'HELLO!' to all you guys.

Archnomad - I think your taking Troys comments to heart.

I do believe you can play competitively (play to win) and still not be a powergamer.

In my eyes a power gamer is someone who must win at all costs. Constantly argues over rules to give themselves an advantage and throws the toys out the pram when they lose.

I'm fairly certain that's someone we could all agree wouldn't be much fun to face.

Oh, well, if he's 6, then maybe not.

Still, you're welcome whenever you can make it! (I don't know if you can jiggle your arrangements around or what...)

Hey Aandayyan don't know what your weekend schedule is like but if you're up for sitting in on a game in Glasgow give me a shout and we can arrange something.

Also the facebook group is a good forum for meetring other mature players:

I shall consult She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed and see if I can wrangle some free time lol. If its the weekend I can maybe even bring along a little play Chaos crew. Think its bout 600 points till I finish painting my Zerkers and Rhino. Saying that, I've played a grand total of 2 games since starting back again...neither of them with my Chaos lol.

Hey.

Ive just started collecting again and was looking for a group to play some games with and hopefully help me brush up on the rules. Folk who are atleast ok with a beginner playing.

Im 22, i like to wash live south side and was just looking for something thats maybe not a club that id need to pay to play games or whatever and something outside of the GW because it tends to be full of screamy little kids, atleast whenever i go in. (No offence to any screamy little kids who read this )

So if you guys know of any groups then let me know cause im really enjoying 40k again and dont want to quite because i cant find a game.

Cheers.

Have a look into the Facebook link Troy's pasted above. Its should be fairly easy to arrange some games that way. I've only been to one game at Dave's (troy tempest) but i enjoyed it and the banter provided. I also go to St Aidens now and again and I've had some good games as the people there are friendly and very fair towards returning gamers like us (in other words they are patient!).

What army are you re-starting with?

Starting with codex marines because i played alot of Dawn of War. Love the fluff with space marines so it seemed like the best choice.

That and i got black reach so for me it was marines or orks and everyone knows marines are two levels more badass.
