I come to you dakka in search of answers.

My friend has played 40k for about five months. He has almost triple the amount of games under his belt as I do. He plays orks.

And he avoids playing against me like the plague.

He insists that I will break the game by brining six lasscannons (two twin-linked), four missile launchers, and a Vindicator. He insists that ALL the marines are broken. I play Blood Angels, and he plays horde orks and runs gazzy 110% of the time.

Is there anything I can do to change his mind, or am I gunna have to listen to his little speech every time I try to set a game up with him. He is starting to get on my nerves with his "marines are OP with 3+ saves" talk.

Just sit down and tell him to outnumber you with orks. Trust me it is hard to bring down 180 orks and that can be fit into a 1500 point game. With that many orks all he has to do is move, run, take casualties then repeat until he is within assault range.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

A more pertinent question would be: Why bother?

If he's causing you angst when you're trying to get a game going, you might want to consider just how much fun it would be actually playing against him.

Sounds like you're better off just leaving it be.

Who needs him?

There are tons of people to play 40k with. Trying to convince him to play with you is going about it in the wrong way, IMHO. Find someone else. Play with them. Give this friend of yours some time. If he starts wanting to play with you again, go for it. And if not, well, that's life.

Leave him to it, he shouldn't be complaining. Power Armour doesn't help you when Orks bring the close combat pain anyway (+Ghazzy), and even with that many blast markers, he can soak it up and keep coming. Find someone who's happy to play you instead.

Ease him in slowly? Verse him with a watered down list (none of the stuff he doesn't like) and then slowly ramp up the difficulty level. This will do 2 things - one it'll teach him how to play against the most common enemy out there and allow you to play with your friend; and 2 it'll teach you how to be efficient with the different elements of your army that you are not used to.

Hints to achieving this: Run a BA (it says you possess this codex in your sig) army with CC monster type units, (Only _tell_ him that these are elite troops else he might complain) Not only will he get the CC he seems to desire, but you'll be removing the things he fears for the time being.

Play some other people. Point out how many points you pay per marine compared to his boyz. Tell him to suck it up. Basically repeating what everyone else said.

The problem with ignoring him is that the OP seems to want to play with his friend who may be a perfect friend outside of the game, they just have some fears.

I remember being 15

Does he play against other marine armies? It must be pretty hard to get a lot of games in if he doesn't play against marines. If he does ask what's different about your list? If he's just worried about your specific build I'd probably not bther to play him, people who run really specific lists and avoid games against lists they don't much up against tend to be the anti-fun to play against.

If he doesn't play against marines at all, I'd just ask him to give it a chance, that if he does and it isn't fun then he's lost an afternoon out of his life at worst. When you're 15 you've got plenty of those to burn

It's only once you've actually played a game that you can start talking about what was fun and what wasn't, and start building lists for future games that are more fun.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I'm seeing "That's BS! I FETHING SHOT YOU WITH 60 FETHING SHOOTAS AND ONLY 4 MARINES DIED!?" and the general reaction of a Trukk being killed by bolters (I've imobilized one with the first shot of the game once. Sister Superior with a Bolt Pistol. Trukk drives up and a single shot imobilizes it ) being quite common in that game.

Even worse with Death Company (3+ then FNP would probably tick him off heaps seeing as he thinks a 3+ save is broken)

If he doesn't like bolters firing on trukks you should tell him about a game I saw where the first shot was a lascannon at a shadowsword. An absurd number of sixes later there was only a crater where the super heavy had been.

Space Marines overpowered?? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Anyways, I laugh because I have played against some BA the last few weekends and have massacred them each time I've played them as IG.

If I had to make a guess, I would guess that your friend is not used to the idea of losing figures. He is playing a horde army and as such, his strength comes from the amount of figures he has (along with the number of attacks he gets in close combat (for most orks). I had that problem when I first started as well. Seeing 1/4 of your army wiped out is a little disconcerning, but after I got used to it, it wasnt that bad and helped me develop more effective strategies.

I would also guess that at this point your friend doesnt have many figures. This is the major downfall of a horde army. I currently own 2 IG battleforces, Creed and Kell, Primarus Psyker, 2 Valkyries, and 1 Chimera. I didnt get all that competetive until I bulked out my weaker figures. Its a number game and for me, its all about hitting my enemy with as many flashlights. (lasguns) as I can. For orks, its all about hand to hand (at least that what I've seen).

Edit: While I dont condone your friends actions, give him some time. I hope he comes around eventually.

He just sounds like a knee-jerk reactionary. Some people think Marines are overpowered or broken just because their stats are really good, failing to realize that they pay a points premium for said stats and equipment. A friend of mine thinks this about Marines in any and all media - Dawn of War, my old homebrew ruleset, hell, probably even Fire Warrior, that terrible FPS from a few years ago. Some people are just thick-headed.

from what you have posted, you are not breaking any rules. Your friend needs to either buck up and face you, or just stop complaining about your army. Figuring out how to beat things is half the fun.

Sounds like your friend only likes to kick the crap out of easier to assault armies. I cant stand people like that, that piss and moan about how unfair it is for "insert random reason" He needs to learn to better play against your SM army. Personally I think BA are full of hokey but Ive hear people winning against them so it cant be unstoppable.

Dont feel bad, I heard this from my older brother when I first got into Orks. I started winning and all I heard was him whinning and moaning about "how the hell am I suppose to beat 30 orks in a squad? And over 100 attacks?! WTF?!"

But eventually that went away and we started playing more games, he realized that if he stopped tooling his SM to take on SM then he does rather well against me. It is annoying as all hell though, you just want to punch the hell out of people like that. I just want to play a friggin game man, Im not tattooing the victories in my arm

He might only be looking at stat lines. Convince him to deploy his troops against yours and maybe the visual of how badly he outnumbers you will change his mind.
