So, I really felt like an idiot just now when I took a sip out of the cup that held the water I've been painting with. My rum in coke was in a cup on the other side of the desk in a very similar cup. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Unfortunately yes. My painting cup is actually a coffee mug and I tend to drink a lot of coffee while painting... It has taught me to replace the water in it often though.

Mine was worse. I was drinking a bottle of Dr. Pepper and I reached to wash my brush and take a sip. I ended up drinking water full of God knows What, and washing my Bleached Bone Brush into Dr. Pepper

Was it bad that I thought it tasted kinda good and had to take another sip?

I won't bother.

The only time it happened to me was because I was wearing headphones and my sister's boyfriend switched them. I would have let it slide, but I was still using enamel paints at the time, and I really hated my sister's long string of ex-con boyfriends, so I held him down and made him drink the rest of it.

Frequently.

It was worse back when I used to always buy cheap black coffee cups... when they got chipped enough to be not really great for drinking coffee out of any more, I would retire them to painting water duties... You can see the inherent problem here...

Two black mugs, slightly distracted painter taking a sip of coffee while washing out the brush, and only realising the error when the 'coffee' is cold and just not... quite... right...

Eww,gross. Well,I DO use some various toxic chemicals to clean my brushes,so I'd probably die if I drank from that.

I literally downed an entire gulp of painting water before realizing 5 mins later that I had just proverbially drank from the loo.
I now keep my paint water in BRIGHT, LABELED cups.

It seems a lot of people who drink from their paint cup are also drinking an alcoholic beverage. Maybe that's a sign.

To quote the Governator:

"You should not drink, and bake"

Except replace bake with paint, hehe.

My painting pot is clear baby food jar with paint all over it,so it's rather hard to drink out of it. The sight of the gerber baby makes me want to barf.

Yup, i've done all of the above, drank from the jar, dipped my brush in the beer/tea/wine, missed the water pot and created a point on a fully loaded brush with my mouth, tipped the tea down the sink, 'washed' the glue brush in the flock, dipped the paintbrush in the glue then into the basing sand, knocked the ash off my cigarette into anything then drunk/painted with it and pretty much every combo of the above.
The worst times were when I used to paint on canvas with oils. Sipping on tasty white spirit when expecting beer, tea, water, softdrink isn't too pleasant but you do get used to it.

Many, many times. I paint with tea frequently, and use a similar cup for my brushes.

Recently I've switched to using a shot glass for by brushes - I don't need all that water anyhow, plus it motivates me to change the water often.

Since I don't often paint whilst hammering Goldshlager, I haven't sipped the painty water lately.

Well LA-DE-DAH....some of us have to be content with paint water...I mean Tescos white stripe lager @ 13 pence a can..

But yes I've dipped my tank brush in my brew on many occasions....

I haven't drank from my brush water, but I mananged a mouthfull of black paint when the little bugger wouldn't open.

Lesson Learned: Never open a paint pot with mouth, especially with head, and pot, tilted backwards.

I've done this countless times. Soft drinks tastes kinda better.
And I've learned to keep my paint infested water to my right, and my tea/soft drink/ coffee at my left. That keeps me from drinking from the wrong one.

If you paint enough, it is bound to happen. Still bothers me drinking water where I used metallic paint, aluminum chips are not good for you....

I leave a stir stick in the water as the quick reminder and it works.

It normally happens to me really late at night when my brain isn't really functioning correctly

I take a nice big gulp, and slowly spit it back out of my mouth into the cup after realising, no need to make a mess everywhere

I've always been careful about this sort of thing, but I've had friends accidentally take a sip, as my paint "cup" is an old bottle of root beer, sans the root beer, of course.

I find it very hard to believe that your pee is turning blue after having a sip of used paint water.....

Nope. But I don't use a cup, I have a bowl-like container that has notches for better brush cleaning, and holding recently rinsed drybrushes.

For me to mistake it as a drinking vessel I would have to be friggin' hammered.

I have a tendency to want to dip my brush in my coffee instead of my water jar. I haven't yet but have come very close many times.
