Yes, you get a 50% discount on all standard product. As for a salary, it all depends on what area you work in. Even with a fairly high position and lots of responsibility they don't pay all that much. It took almost 4 years for me to get to a low to moderate salary from a really crappy one!

Well, from a guesstimate, based on the wages posted from the 'job placements' that they have released, wages are fairly low - I seem to recall the most recent ad for a trainee painter was about £12k P.A. , which is pretty low in the grand scheme of things. However, I am sure they have no shortage of applicants since it's a lot of people's dream job; they are fully prepared to take the low wages in return for the GW opportunity.

I'm guessing from your original question that you are referring to the store staff? I would have thought they are on standard minimum wage; no more than that. But yes, there is an enticement of discount (not sure it's 50% though).

From what it sounds like, don't expect to make a lot.

The retail side is probably pretty poor (I.E. not a living wage) unless you're a manager or higher.

For the Studio side, it may be slightly better, but again you probably need to be high-up to do much. As a rule, gaming industry jobs don't pay much.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Slightly off topic but one thing I've always wondered is if GW employees have their backgrounds checked (criminal record etc) as they are often left in charge of numerous younger children.

That scheme is being canned -- I mean the one where you have to get checked for moderately casual associations with children.

Back on topic, if the original poster is serious about his question, the GW human resources department could give a definitive answer.

UK salaries are much lower than their U.S. counter parts, but better benefits. And its still customary for a Background check because the company doesn't want to get ripped off.

Store Managers get an OK salary, but find one of stores not near a big city, one of the one man jobbers and you should be okay.

Regular staffer, not that great, but good while in University!

Nottingham staff get much better salaries and get the opportunity to do all sorts of cool things. Finish school and tailor your CV to the company and you will come up aces. Don't try to impress anyone with your great devotion and knowledge of the hobby, its usually an automatic No at corporate if that is all you talk about.

Minimum wage here is $10.50 (I think) so with a 40 hour work week you're making $420. Per month that would be $1680, and per year that's $20,160. Then you factor in taxes... and you're making about $4.69 per year .

The design people in the 'big' hobby game industry players make ok money. The people who sit at the top and figurehead the company make great money.

Pretty much every other position with any of the big players, expect to make whatever the average pay for your position is, minus a moderate bit as they view simply working for them as an incentive.

And it works.

They can't keep the salary secret because they have to inform prospective employees what the salary will be.

Just ask GW HR as I said earlier.

Starting salary would have been 26k as a manager with a cap of less than 40....I'm in LA where cost of living is super high I can only imaging it goes down from there...

I always wonder if GW store staff get any sort of commission, because in GW Birmingham at least they seem bent on making you leave the shop with as much unecessary junk as possible.

The last time I went in, I was absently flipping through the 'nid codex & one of the guys sidled up & proceeded to try & sell me a nid battleforce based on how theyre "the best assault army in the game".

There was also a memorable incident where I went in for a big mek & they tried to persuade me to buy a WHFB Lizardmen Carnosaur. & Also the usual up-sell when you get to the til:

"Have you tried one of our new paintbrushes? theyre just like regular paintbrushes, but cost thrice as much, you should buy several"

Maybe I just have a gullible face or something...

No, they have minimum daily goals that they have to reach for things like transaction value, academies sold, etc.

If they fall down on those they start getting threatened to be fired real fast. In the U.S. if you drop for 30 days, you have the next 30 to fix it or you are fired.

As a blackshirt in Houston, I was making around $12.50/hr. My wife at the time had the good job, so that was decent cash for a second job. That was back in '05 and when the LotR bubble was going strong. A 60% discount back then too.

Commissions? Sorry, I had to giggle at that. No commissions, just ungodly pressure to make your numbers every day or face the Inquisitors and ultimately the underperforming Heretics are purged.

As a former manager in a "higher class" area I was still paid pants. Let me put it this way, when I left the area manager told me I should think about moving to Baltimore to be a mail order guy. He also told me that "3 or 4 of them cram into a cheap apartment" which was exactly what 4 of the guys I worked with in the area had to do because they got paid pants as well.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity......

In America, business law states that it is illegal to prohibit employees from discussing their wages with other employees, or with anyone. You simply can't stop people from saying what they make, it's against the law. As a manager, if you even IMPLY to an employee that they shouldn't mention their salary to someone, you're breaking the law. Emperor help you if you have it in writing.

Yep, the management of my company tried that, told us via all points proclamations that disciplinary action would be taken against anyone discussing wages (we're in the UK) and eventually someone at the team leader meeting just quietly mentioned that it was extremely illegal to do that.
