@ MGS - I live in the UK too and its not actually illegal for them to state that. It mentioned it quite clearly in my contract for my job i cant mention my salary to anyone else inside the company.
This doesnt really bother me as i feel if you work hard e.t.c you are rpobably the person on the highest salary anyways

A year or two ago, there were adverts for GW retail jobs in WD. The wage was advertised as £13K minimum

When I worked for them as a fulltime store employee at the end of 2004 I was on £10k. If I remember right I think the manager would of been on £15 - £16k. The only reason I know that was I was asked what I'd expected as the salary range. As I'd been in IT before, but knew what GW were like, I said £15k and was told that would be a managers pay.

Why has working in IT got any bearing on what wage you ask for in a interview?

When I was laid off as a support engineer in 2003 I was on £20K. Over the months going for different jobs I had to lower my expectations. When asked what wage I expected when working for GW I knew that even if I said £17k I would not of been looked at. By the time of my interview I'd been doing an insurance call centre job for a couple of months for £12k. Didn't want to undersell myself or make them think I'd only be there for a month and then clear off.

I see - from your original post, it sounded like you were implying that GW and a previous career in IT were related somehow.

I made a crap ton of money when working at GW. And I loved every minute of it.
Except painting for Games Days and Saturday events....
Literally after a week of painting, everything would change 2 days before the due date...and that date was set in stone.
I had a co worker who had to paint 10 dwarfs, and he took 2 days to do one. And I was in charge of the project, but with no authority to penalize him in any way.
When I moved to HQ I made even more money and loved every second of working there. I had great co workers, and loved talking to the CEO every day.
If I could have, I would have reapplied and moved to Memphis this spring....

For those who might be interested, in response to the legality of employees discussing wages, here's a few case laws for two jurisdictions.

Not saying anything about whether or not it's legal, but the fact that it's in your contract does not make it legal. People put things like that in contracts all the time, simply in hopes that nobody calls them on it.

Around here you earn more stocking shelves in a supermarket, it's more a job for those who have an undying love for the hobby. Though I do note that most of the Amsterdam staff has made it quite far in due time, one of them has a management position in Asia now and another is doing a tour in the UK as a store manager.

Wow! Your province is way better than mine...
Minimum wage in BC is $8.50 (or $8, I forget), and at GW you make that, with a 4% raise every year, as a "key timer"
