I'm asking because I'm going to gamesday UK this year and just today got tickets with the miniature.

Now the last Gamesday I went along to was about nine or ten years ago and then I got the Kroot Shaper model and was told (was youngish at the time) to keep a hold of it and don't take it out of it's packaging as it will be worth something one day. Well I just looked into it today and they go on ebay 'buy it now' for about 25 quid. So I'm thinking to myself, what the hell was the point? 25 quid up from 5 over ten years? That's a fairly useless investment if their ever was one. I also have a limited bilbo baggins model in it's blister from the LOTR release, it's a bit better but still piss poor.

So does anyone have any reason to stop me from ripping these things out of their blisters and using them however I like (and I'm talking dremels and jewlers saws here )? Apart from the measly return I would get by selling them which could afford me about half a tank of petrol.

Games Day miniatures generally won't go for a lot, simply because in terms of "limited release"...they're really common. Anyone who's gone to Games Day that year will have the same one.

I can actually remember someone back in the day going on about slipping fivers to games day staff so they could buy more than their allocated on per person. I even remember reading that was the reason GW started selling them with the tickets rather than at the event.

Now I realise those people must have been fairly desperate.

Well, or ridiculous.

The actual 'Games Day model' tends to go for practically nothing. But at that same time, Games Workshop sold the Roadshow and limited edition campaign models with a limit as to how many you could buy per person.

Things like Inquisitor Gideon Lorr, Sergeant Centurius, Sicarius with the twin lightning claws, the Forge World exclusive Thunderbolt Pilot, etc--they actually go for some serious coin.

Now then, when we say "serious coin". How much are we talking?

Open them, paint them and use them however you like. The Gamesdays I've been to have had racks of past years models for sale in various quantities. GW doesn't want them lying around.

It depends on the model. I've seen the Thunderbolt Pilot go for almost $100, which would've netted a profit of pushing $80-90 for the seller.

When did the Thunderbolt Pilot come out?

Just trying to gauge if this is actually anything to be surprised at. Or whether again, I would willingly use it in a conversion.

The Thunderbolt Pilot came out I think, 3? Maybe 4 years ago?

Somewhere in that timeframe. When they released the Thunderbolt Fighter.

Buying 10 thunderbolt pilots back then was not a bad investment.

1. Use them as any other model. This includes up to sacrificing the model JUST for a body part if required.

That said, I have NO FW or GW 'LE' models apart from that supposedly rare 'WH' inquisitor in the hat and plasma pistol (which might have been LE in other parts of the world, but it was common enough to find on the shelves of games stores here, GW or otherwise) - of which I have 5.

I don't like FW's QC enough to buy their stuff, and very few of GWs LE models appeal to me.

I use them just like everything else. I use 2 Reaver Princeps and a Thunderbolt Pilot in my Inquisitorial retinue, and I have a Runt Bot acting as a Big Mek. The Forge World ones aren't actually that rare as you can get them every year at Games Day and other events, same with the Games Day ticket model: everyone who went also has one. The really limited ones are the ones which came with army box sets or just released for a promotion, such as Harry the Hammer, the special Autarch, the unique Necron Lord, etc.

I got the White Dwarf in Space model when I bought my subscription to White Dwarf (I know, I know, a lot of people don't like WD, lol, but I do). I commissioned it out to be painted up like a "Rogue Techmarine" for hire. That way I can use him as a Techmarine in any space marine army I play (I have Dark Angels and a fledgling Space Wolves army. I'm going to start a Blood Angels army too).

Here's the link to the painted model.

http://awakeningynnead.blogspot.com/2010/08/white-dwarf-in-spaaaaaaace.html

So, I guess my answer is, I try to use the in normal game play.

I've used a few like any other model, like the Games Day Wolf Priest. I got Sergeant Centurious a while ago, the Legion of the Damned special sergeant, and since I knew I'd never use him and that he was fairly valuable, I sold him. It's a case by case basis sort of thing, but I'd rather use the models more often than not.

I've usually made the ones that I have bought. But on occasion I've found something quite old and rare, and I tend to sell them if I can't think of a need for them. Usually I'll spend the money on something else and hopefully the figure will go to someone who will treasure it.

And still such a horrid model..

There are cheaper games if you wanna be a "collector" especially when most of the models are common :p The really rare stuff is from the 80s and looks like someone sculpted ground beef and then melted it in a microwave.. Yay rogue trader minis

Paint it, play with it or keep it in a box if the model sucks

I've got the Space Marine Iwo Jima diorama model from a gamesday...years ago. I doubt it goes for much but I doubt I could let go of it for sentimental reasons. I also have a Standard Bearer for the Ultramarines which is a really nice sculpt. I''ll never be doing any Smurfs so that one may have to go sometime.

I really liked that model and was frustrated I couldn't get it anymore. I like my Inquisitors.

While this works in toy collecting, it doesn't exactly work in miniatures the same way. Probably something to do with the same reasoning that an assembled, converted, well painted model sells for much more than a MISB model.

Many collectable things weren't rare at the time. Look at the Chaos Dwarf and Dogs of War stuff on eBay, all sells for a ridiculously high price now yet they were all general releases that were dumped cheap in GW sales.

Owns Whole Set of Skullz Techpriests

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

Use 'em like any other model.

I mean... I've got... lemme think... Chaos Possessed that came with the 3.5 Ed Chaos Army Box, the Cadian Standard Bearer, the Marine that MeanGreen posted up above, the Skullz Ultramarine Standard Bearer, the full Skullz Tech-Priest set, the Lictor from the last Tyranid army box, Gideon Lorr, the Games Day Marine with the Thunder Hammer, the Female Commissar, the whatever anniversary Marine with the WWE Title Belt, the Guardsmen At Ease... can't think of any others. Had two of the Games Day Wolf Priest, but gave 'em away to friends.

But yeah, I just use 'em as normal. The Possessed Champ leads my first Possessed Squad, the Standard Bearer is a Standard Bearer, as is the Ultra Standard Bearer, the Lictor is a Lictor, Gideon is an Inquisitor, the Marines get used as Captains or Vet Sergeants, and the Tech-Priests are awesome for Dark Heresy.

I've never been able to get Sicarius with Claws.

Platuan4th wrote:I never got this one.

Guess it depends where you were.

He never got an official release over here, and was always considered a Ltd. Ed. model. GW Staffers in Oz got them. I had to get mine on eBay.

I need a "Other" option. I open the package, clean the mold lines, and save it. Then I wait until I'm good enough to paint them. Not only with limited edition models, I do it with models that I buy only because I like them, and do not need them for my armies.

Of course, I have tons of minis in their package, awaiting.
