Check it out! I'm using a template to make this land raider for my Wolves. It's made out of card stock and reused boxes. It is far from finished and the progress has been slow because I'm watching my son this week and I need to run out to the store for a few things. The pieces that look loose have not yet been glued down, as I want to see how all of the parts fit together first. I'm not sure whether to make it a crusader or redeemer just yet. I am considering buying the guns as bits from ebay, and making the tred out of either foam core or green stuff. I'm really excited about it so far, as I've never tried anything like this. If this works out we'll I could try a storm raven or that celestus assault ram.

The great wolf was pretty upset when he saw that it was pink, but I assured him that this was an extremely temporary phase. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this works out, but I can't help but notice that I have started yet another project without having finished so many others. Hopefully I'll be able to give updates soon.

Please let me know if you can think of anything that I may not have considered or as general advice. Constructive criticism is always welcome. Thanks for looking, and be sure to check back.

Will you use extra bits, or will it be all cardboard?

I apologise, I was giggling as I expected to see a shoe box! Actually it looks kinda good. I would keep it pink too, looks good in Barbie pink.

If I am not in my room, is it still my room?

Haha! That looks great! I cant stand the crappy stuff people do with cardboard these day (like the Ork Looted Wagons) but this is turning out very nice so far. As said before, are you using other bits?

I will see what I can do with the card board, but I have the feeling that I'll end up buying the guns from a bits vendor. There are a lot more panels and lights and things to go on. My wife gave me a nice idea for the tred, but I'm open to ideas.

People would be furious to get their face wrecked by a pink land raider.... just doesn't seem wolfy to me though. Perhaps someone else can start a "Space Poodles" chapter.

looks pretty good. to be honest, i was expecting something alot worse. just be careful that you don't end up spending as much on bits as would buying a second hand landraider in the first place!

Update. I apologize in advance for my poor camera and general lack of photography skills.

I've still not decided if it is to be a redeemer or crusader...

Still need a a lot of things. I am confident that I can make everything except the Flamestorm Cannons, Hurricane Bolters, Frag Launcher and sensor bits perhaps the turret for the Multi Melta. I have found some decent deals on ebay already. I expect parts to come out to less than $15.

I am thinking I can use these Wolf Guard Terminator Assault Cannons

Do you guys think I can get away with this WG heavy Flamer for the Melta Gun?

Please let me know what you think if you've got some constructive criticism. I'd much rather hear it now then when it is to late.

Autocannons are not terribly hard to make out of the Q-Tip sticks (the plastic tubular ones, not the cardboard ones). They actually might be easier to do than to use. I did that for a Land Speeder and it turned out pretty well. I'd post pics but I think I sold it.

That I know, but I've never seen a Land Raider around here (I can PM you with the exacts "why" on full detail if you want) and the patterns one can find sometimes are inaccurate or out of scale. So, having someone who have found one that's good.

Yeah sorry, I forgot how bad some of them are. I didn't post links for fear of upsetting the Mods here, and incurring the wrath of the IP police. They are technically in breach of GW's copyright remember.

I have done a few myself in the past, and with the right bits n bobs/weapons etc on them youd be hard pressed to tell the difference between them and the official ones.

You've got an excellent point, but given how closely their models rip off WW1 tanks, I have a feeling we're okay. lol

Exhibit A:

Your model there is simply a 40kish spin off the British Mark 4 tanks after all. Most of their vehicles are almost direct copies of established real military vehicles. Even some of their more obscure vehicles, such as the Atlas Recovery Vehicle are markedly similar to pre-existing real world designs; the Atlas of course being the M88A2 Hercules:

GW's Atlas Recovery Vehicle

Or perhaps even more strikingly similar is the American M31 series:

Do don't sweat it! Build away! lol

Besides a good portion of the build threads everywhere are built due to these plans; Dakka has always given us scratch builders love! That's why dakka's painting and modeling forums are so vibrant, imho.

Thanks for the pictures Manimal. I never realized the land raider was totally ripped off.

And @ HyperViper6: I did do cardboard drop pods. It's not that I've got a whole bunch of spare time, as much as my hobby budget runs on fumes at this point. I did have a lot of time recently, as I work in an elementary school and only worked 1/2 time this summer.

We are moving this week, and hobby stuff is packed up. I don't know when I'll get to send down to this again, which is burning me up because I feel like I could be finished pretty soon.

Do you guys think I can get away with not doing those exhaust pipes on the back? I really don't feel like making them right now, and am wondering if you guys think it will greatly detract from the model.

So I've done a little bit more and this Land Raider is really taking shape. I need a few more bits, and I've been to lazy to model some this at the moment. But, I think I'm almost finished.

I still need to make the multi melta, and model a psychotic gunner. My son is excited to show you guys that the flamestorm cannons have arrived.

I already included this in my army WIP blog, but I thought you guys wouldn't mind if I put it hear to.

my sons are also very exited whenever i get something of the postoffice. i know that gesture very well. when i´m painting and building the look like their in church, all controled and totaly good behaved... much in contrast to the wild bunch of smelly screaming hooligans they normaly are...by the way they are three , all boys and i hope they will tend to be interessted in 40k when they are old enough^^.

good luck with your landraider, do you plan to flesh out more details on your modell, since some parts are only printet, like rivets or windows and doors...?

There is something funny about looking back at those first models. Mine were total crap and look like they were colored with crayon. It's embarasing, but fun to look back on.

Also, I though back at Fenris, kids needed to hold an axe to not be discarded, but your kid's no fool, he went for the heavy flamer xD

It's been great to hear all the encouraging words. I can't wait to pick this project back up and see it through.

@ Vik: I really enjoyed hearing about your boys, and hope mine will give me some peaceful hobby time as he get's older. As for your question concering the land raider's detail, I was hoping I could get away with just painting rivets. But I think the other things you have pointed out may require more than that. I hadn't considered the question, and am glad you brought it up.

Yeah, that's how we do things around here. Having been born at 4 lbs, he compensates by doing things big.

considering his look into the camera he must be about a yer or so... when he can walk on his own he will find enough interesting things do leasrn from, so daddys free time will come up more often as he will play a lot more often on his own. be sure to watch him doing so^^, great fun. when so young a toddler plays for himself its so cute^^.

as for details, i just would print said parts out anew, fix them on cardbord and thus you get a bit of raised areas to highlite after that... as vor the rivet look, you might get away with small needles or nails. but i tend to a holepunch (right word?) to make small rivet like discs and glue them in place.
and one final question: why the h..l did you print the raider patterns on pink papaer??? might become a stigmata for his whole existence^^, only joking^^

@ Vik: Hole punch is absolutely correct. Also, Pins sounds like a good idea. I had considered just rolling up small bits of green stuff, but that seems like to much work. As for the color, my Wolf lords prefer their mounts to be nice and pink on the inside. Just kidding, the pink card stock was a misprint from work, so I just brought it home to use for paper craft. It is strong, thin, and priced just right (free).

As for the little ones, what your saying makes sense, as mine seems to become more and more busy everyday, discovering "projects" of his own. It is hilarious to watch him at work.

yep seeing kids grow up is gift and pain side by side. as with every step in growing the day will come when they will be standing on their own. gives me always a bitter sweet feeling. in the morning i had such a moment with my two yoear old sun as he told me about his elephants on his bedwear (?)....

as for your prices for scratchbuilding: exellent^^, free is always the thing to do. and one further thought to all those scratchbuilders out there: as you are happily using houshold stuff and allready used paper and cardboard and what not:

you are diong exellent stuff cause you are recycling and thats a wonderfull thing. i vote for more scratchbuilders to save our earth...! considering this we might make a competition out of that...hmmm

I think a scratch building contest would be awesome. I imagine people would be motivated to try it for the first time or take on a more ambitious project than they are use to.
