Do you believe it's time for Malifaux to have it's own Sub Forum in 'Other Games'?
Hell - it's about time!
Maybe in the future, a little too soon...

Folks,
Most of you in the war-gaming hobby should know about the game 'Malifaux', by Wyrd Minatures. If you haven't, it's a Western/Steam Punk/Victorian Horror Skirmish game, famous for it's use of 'Fate' cards to determine outcomes instead of dice.

A relative newcommer to the gaming world, it's rapid rise in popularity could be described as incredible - you can see mentions and nods to it all over the forum, and it's now not that unusual to see Malifaux progress blogs in the 'Dakka P&M Blogs' forum. In my local gaming group, Malifaux has already overtaken Fantasy and Hordes/Warmachine, and is even starting to replace 40k as the most common game on the table!

The purpose of this thread is simple; I personally believe it's time we had a Sub-Forum in 'Other Games' to discuss Malifaux - but I really am keen on seeing if you folks agree, or whether I'm simply looking at Malifaux through rose-tinted glasses! So what's your oppinion?

My vote:
Hell no.
It's still a skirmish game, and thus should go with the other skirmish games.

It's a niche game in a niche hobby.

Heck yeah!

Malifaux is also starting to take over the attention of many of the gamers I know... and I totally love it.

Sorry, I lost all interest at 'Steam Punk'.

Boring, boring, boring setting! Though the models are occasionally interesting.

I agree. Steam Punk is the worst thing ever. lololol

I kid... (or do I?)

Anyways; I think it is still pretty niche. I'd give it a year or two before going ahead with this.

I read up on it when local people started playing it, but I found the subject matter and setting to be bland mixed with offensive. Great models occasionally but nothing that drew me in, plus I like throwing dice.

EDIT: Even though I don't like it I voted for "Not Yet, a little too soon" option. See if people are still talking about it next year...

Rapid popularity is incredible? Not really, most of the gamers at my club HATE it with a passion.

You have seen it replacing Warhammer and 40K in popularity? Whilst I have no reason to doubt you.....maybe your club is different from most other clubs?

Leave it where it is for the moment.

If I am not in my room, is it still my room?

Its a great game, but this is a Warhammer Forum, plus they already have their own forum where people that actually write and work on the game will answer your questions.

BTW, is there a link to the manufacturer's site handy that has info on this? I've heard of it, listened to the D6G guys talk about ti, but when I looked for their web page previously it was... poor. Very lacking in useful info.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.

It would be good if there could be a sub-sub forum within Skirmish Games.

That way Necromunda et al would have their own slots,It would make it tidy and easier to find things

But I don't see why Malifaux should be singled out as having its own sub-forum within other games and recognise there may be difficulties setting up/organising sub-sub-forums. Not that I doubt Legoburner's abilities for a moment, I hasten to add!

+1.

I like the game a lot, and even have most of their models.

The setting is done well, especially when you account for the fact that they already had a large line of models when they decided to make them into a game.
They basically looked at what they made and figured out a way to have them all co-exist.

Is it? I know it started out that way, but I read many many posts from people who never/no longer/rarely play GW games. Sure 40k is the most popular game on the forum, and Dakka has its roots in 40k, but I thought we'd grown out of that "my game is bigger than your game" nonsense a few years back?

I'm not sure what exactly you see but at the top of my screen it says;

DakkaDakka - Warhammer 40K Forums -

In the past month there have been three ongoing topics on Malifaux, with pretty much the same three people posting in each one.

If you start makeing subforums for one skirmish game, then your going to have to start makeing one for every other one.

If you want to discuss Malifaux then by all meens post something in the Skirmish Forum and I'll be happy to talk all day about it. However I'd still point you to the official Wyrd forums, where the people who actually own the company and write the game actually regularly post.

As long as the company doesn't go out of business, and they keep making great models.

The buzz is because they came out with a bunch of fantastic new models at Gencon, along with their first expansion book.
The booth was swamped from Thursday to Sunday.
Two years in a row now, they seem to be one of the most talked about things from Gencon.

I remember Warmachine starting out like this. But the buzz there didn't seem to pick up until Apotheosis I think, the 2nd expansion book.
They had a couple good Con seasons and everything took off.

Does a game have to have a rules revision before some take it seriously?

Malifaux is a great game, and I think it's going to be around for a long time.
If it had a forum, I'd peruse it.

That said, I think it's too soon. There just aren't enough Malifaux threads being generated to warrant them getting their own forum.

@Caty

You're semi-right. That is what the top of the foums say, and Dakka did start out as -and primarily still is- a 40K forum.

A quick peek around will show that there are more games than 40K with their own forums. No reason to discount a game, simply because of the titling at the top of the site. Otherwise, Privateer Press -among others- wouldn't have a place here, either.

Right now, the top page of Skirmish threads is mostly Inquisimunda / Necromunda.

Malifaux has a mere handful of threads, and a small number of posts.

Infinity has more threads than Malifaux.

If/when Malifaux starts dominating Skirmish to the extent that it's of comparable size to WM/H, then I'd back a separate forum.

Maybe in the future, but "a little too soon" is a bit optimistic for me. Not flagrantly unrealistic, but still optimistic. I have no idea how big Malifaux will get, but for the amount of threads/posts about it I see on Dakka, I wouldn't waste even half an hour of Legoburner's time for another sub- (let alone a sub-sub-) forum. Maybe I'm biased, but I feel like race-specific 40K tactics sub-forums are far more warranted than a Malifaux skirmish-scale sub-forum, based on traffic. Man, that was a lot of hyphens...

The Malifaux has a great line of miniatures (very delicate in some areas though), but I would agree that it could be a little too soon to have their own sub forum...for not a lot of people are aware of the game system yet.

Though I haven't played the game yet, I could be interested in it in the near future.
