Subject: British murder... bit of a puzzler (Update - an arrest has been made)
|
 |
Fixture of Dakka
|
Here in the UK, a young girl in her 20s was reported missing just before Christmas and sadly her body was found yesterday three miles from her flat. It's not official yet, but the police are treating her death as suspicious and the press are assuming murder.
She was last seen on CCTV in Tescos buying a pizza on Friday 17th December at about 20:30. Her boyfriend, who was away for the weekend, reported her missing when he returned home on Sunday.
Here's the puzzler. Her mobile phone, keys and coat were still in the flat. The receipt for the pizza has also been found in the flat. There was however no trace of the pizza or the packaging.
The keys, coat (seen on the CCTV), mobile and receipt impies she returned home after her trip to Tescos, but if she didn't leave of her own volition (as the presence of her keys and mobile phone would suggest), where's the pizza?

I assume this is humour, but to clarify, the pizza was of the prepackaged variety and would have needed cooking.

The pizza was frozen?
If so, pizza shards may have been used as the murder weapon...

Mulling it over, King Cracker's "solution" does put forward the interesting idea that it may have been consumed prior to her coming home i.e. she took to someone else's home and ate it there. In which case, why has this individual not come forward as being the last person to see her alive?
I guess you could also accept Gorskar's solution that it was stolen by the person responsible.

She could have dropped her stuff there by accident (IE went in to pick something up, put her bag down and forgot it) before heading over to someone elses house with the pizza who was her murderer or possibly another victim.

Or the Butler.
Or, she was cheating on her bloke, and that person slotted her.

The boyfriend did it. He got hungry, and had her get a pizza. When she returned, he knocked her out. After bringing her away and killing her, he went to a bro's house to chill with pizza and have an alibi
Or the cops took it as early evidence coughsnackcough

Nobody finds it odd that everyone takes it as "every day business" that she was being recorded on CCTV?
Invasion of privacy and draconian control measures don't stop crime apparently.
Clearly Chuck Norris has kidnapped her and is keeping the pizza in his beardpocket.

Not especially no. CCTV exists, and sooner or later you're going to be caught on camera. Meh. No invasion of privacy, and it's not exactly in my room.
That would be my webcam.

That was my first thought when the police got him to do an appeal (they often do this when the partner is considered a suspect to study their psycological reaction whilst they are reading the statement). Indeed when he was making the appeal, he referred to her in the past tense (this was prior to her being found). However, it could be that he had accepted she was probably dead. He also has a fairly ironclad allaby in terms of British geography. Sheffield (where he was) is about 6 hours from Bristol (where she was).

Not that ironclad:
He travelled back to Bristol then reported her missing she could have been alive up until the point he came home.
Call it probable.

Or she could have went missing during the timeframe of him returning home from Sheffield to Bristol.
I have to wonder if he had tried to reach her at some point during the weekend.

And you being a citizen of Britain know that it's not cameras trained on your homes peeking through your windows, watching every move you make.
It's CCTV in public areas. Just like almost every bloody country in the world has.

I actually don't care about CCTV, it's not one of the things that bothers me. Actually, being a vain , I don't mind it, especially as it does a pretty good job in identifying people responsible for criminal acts.
Anyways, back to the original topic, I imagine the pizza probably disappeared under fairly mundane circumstances; eaten somewhere other than the flat, or maybe taken by the killer.

You do raise a very good point here though. CCTV was not enough to stop THIS murder, but it was enough to know that there was a frozen pizza involved. Clearly no amount of CCTV is going to fix this problem, because the criminals will always find some way around it. They'll start hiding in their houses if nothing else, and the privacy wierdos (who are probably criminals, or at the least closet libertarians) will whine and moan when we put the cameras in their houses. If only we had the foresight to find and implement some means of tracking items AFTER they were bought. I propose a gps in every pizza. Failing that, why not just microchip people with gps devices? It would be great, because then we would just be able to go back and look at the people who were in proximity to her. You could implement other biometric tracking, vital signs and whatnot. Hell, we give each individual one an ip, then we could just set snmp traps for people upon death, and immediately pinpoint anyone within three meters or so of that person at the time. That would completely render consequence-free murder impossible AND finally render privacy impossible. I'm a genius!
