Just had ourselves a competitive 2-on-2 game. It was SabrX and I against Reecius and White925. I brought my Ravenguards. SabrX brought his Witch Hunters Immo-spam (but with 2 squads of seraphims). Reecius brought his tournament Bjorn missile Wolves and White925 his scary Wolfstar army (as a matter of fact, they played against each other recently in a tournament, with Reecius' battle report here).

Anyways, without further ado, the lists:

I have a pretty good idea of how this one turns out, but I won't spoil it!

That was a really fun game, and I am looking forward to the battle report! Thanks for not making a fuss about my rules error, that was really cool of you. It didn't change the game at all, but still, I hate it when I make a stand on a rule that I am wrong about.

Great game though, anytime you want to get another one in, let me know.

Oh yeah, one other thing, have you tried running the librarian in the infiltrating termie squad? Give him Gate and then you can teleport forward and be in the other player's back lines right away. If you take a homing beacon, you can do so without fear of deviating.

Just a thought, your list kicks ass as is, but it may be something worth trying out.

I was under the impression Locator Beacons did not prevent a Librarian that used Gate to not scatter?

I am betting the SW win this one, that is so many missiles!

For casual games, I'm not too strict on the rules. A tournament game would be another matter though. Anyways, usually if a rule could be pointed out by just a simple passage in the rulebook, then I would usually do it. But this would require research and probably disrupt our game for a while. If something is controversial in a game, and as long as it won't really make or break our game, sometimes I just let it go for the sake of smooth gameplay.

Yeah, sometimes I infiltrate my libbie with Shrike. It depends on the game. In this game, there's just too much firepower. Besides, if I had infiltrated the libbie with Shrike on the flanks, then most likely his Null Zone would be out of range to actually be useful, considering we were playing on a 4'x8' table. I usually give him Might of the Ancients because my terminators have problems against enemy land raiders. Homing beacons sound interesting. I will consider it in the future. I'm just a little hesitant about rushing my LR's forwards against melta-spam armies, which luckily you guys didn't take a lot of.

My one big mistake was not accounting for the position of your Rune Priest. Otherwise, I would've put my librarian in the LR that was further away (and made sure he stayed out of range of your runic weapon). Also, I should've probably kept him in the LR just to cast Null Zone.

I can see the controversy in this tactic, and I will not do it if my opponent feels uncomfortable with it. While I don't normally do this, I feel that it is a legal move as long as Shrike isn't part of the unit. After all, everyone else is in terminator armor and are deepstriking. Then again, like I said, I don't normally do this, and if I had wanted to do it and my opponent felt that it wasn't legal, I probably wouldn't do it. My philosophy is to go with the more restrictive ruling if unsure (or to roll for it).

calypso2ts wrote:I am betting the SW win this one, that is so many missiles!

My Ravenguards don't care about missile-spam. Not with 2+ armor and land raiders. As a matter of fact, my list is the perfect foil to long fang-spam, especially if they don't bring enough meltas. It's also pretty deadly against most other lists as well.

I agree that ML are not that scary for the terminators, but they sure ruin the day of Immolator spam.

Thanks. It's not often I get to go up against such good players with good armies (as I usually can't make it to tournaments), so I especially relish these times. I enjoy sharing my experiences because I know some of the readers may find them useful to improve their games. Heck, just writing them and reflecting has made me a better player oftentimes. But mainly, I just enjoy the challenge.

calypso2ts wrote:I agree that ML are not that scary for the terminators, but they sure ruin the day of Immolator spam.

Yup. That's why my strategy was to use my LR's as screens and to deploy in a reflused flank formation to deny some of their long fangs shots against my partner's immolators. How successful was that? You'll find out soon enough.

Yes, it was a very good game! White925's Wolfstar and my Bjorn Wolves, which are both tournament winning armies, came up against some tough opponents.

@Calypso2ts
Homing beacons work with gate as the rules for gate say the unit is removed and then immediately placed back on the table using deep strike rules. The homing beacon states that any unit using deep-strike may come in off the homing beacon without scattering. There is one word in there that throws people off, but following the rules for both grammar and logic, it is clear that is it allowed.

@thread
Yes, LR/Termis spam is tough for Missile Wolves but not unbeatable. You rely on VoF. The termies and LRs both will die to massed templates/kraks, it just takes time. jy2 has speed though, which helps enormously. A lot of it comes down to luck, honestly. Plus, I have plenty of other AT weapons at my disposal besides ML spam.

You're right. I actually usually lose more terminators to Volume of Fire than I do to high-AP/power weapons. However, as you say, what I do have is the speed to mitigate such shooting. In any mission other than DoW, you're looking at most a turn 2 assault and sometimes even a turn 1 assault. It's my version of the "Terminator Alpha Strike" list. Heh, heh...

Yeah, your speed is what would kill me. I would have to get lucky and crack the LRs fast, otherwise it would be super hard for me to win that match-up.

Mission: Seize Ground - 5 objectives
Deployment: Pitched Battle
Initiative: Space Wolves

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DEPLOYMENT:
I will be refering to the Space Marine and Witch Hunter teams as the "The Alliance" and the Space Wolves as, well, the "Space Wolves". Because the standard 6'x4' table was too small, we decided to use a 8'x4' table instead. There were 3 objectives on the Alliance side and 2 on the Space Wolves side.

Space Wolf deployment.

The Alliance's (Ravenguards + Witch Hunters) deployment. We deploy on the left side of the table to deny the right long fangs some shots.

Scouts combat squad and infiltrate onto 2 of the objectives.

Shrike and assault terminators infiltrate onto the right flank and out of LOS.

The Alliance proceeds to steal the initiative!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alliance 1 (SM+WH)

The Alliance advances.

Shrike splits off from his terminators.

The 2 celestians decide to take a smoke break.

Terminators and attached librarian disembark from the land raiders. Null Zone gets blocked by the Space Wolf Rune Priest!

Alliance shooting explodes 1 laserback, killing 2 hunters,

explode a typhoon speeder,

wreck another laserback,

and immobilise a dread.

Shrike would then assault their outer-most long fangs. Surprisingly, they do 2 wounds to him. In return, he would send them packing and off the board next turn.

Finally we have the scrum in the middle between my assault terminators and White925's wolfstar unit.

To be continued.....

Thanks. You can mainly thank Tim for the photos. I was much too absorbed into the carnage.

BTW, your army looked great.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alliance 1 (Continued)

For some reason, wolfstar makes almost all their saves except 3...and I fail a majority of mine, losing 7 terminators. The squad of 1 terminator falls back while the librarian's unit stays locked in cc.

I lose another terminator to No Retreat.

Space Wolves 1

SW movement. Laserback pops smoke.

Disembarked hunters runs into the ruins to claim his objective.

Space Wolf shooting shakes an immolator as well as blows off its main gun.

My scouts go to ground from his missile launcher frag blasts, and I only lose 1.

They also shoot down 1 scout with rhino stormbolters.

Long fangs blow up 2 sister transports on the left despite cover....

....and stun an exorcist.

They also turn the chimera into an almost useless box, just barely alive.

In other shooting, he stuns both land raiders, reduced to shaken thanks to extra armor. Also, Shrike goes-to-ground from long fang krak missiles and survives.

In assault, Wolfstar easily finishes off my terminators and librarian in assault.

Alliance 2

Angry sisters advance and get ready to bring the pain. Lone terminator continues to fall back. My LR immobilises itself on terrain. Doh!

Celestians and seraphims advance some more....

....while battle sisters fall back onto Alliance middle objective.

Terminators advance but are just shy of assault. Shrike went to ground last turn when he was shot at by some long fangs.

In shooting, sisters cause a few wounds, but because of wound allocation, he spreads them out so that only 1 thunderwolf is removed.

Canoness with retinue and seraphims assault! The Emperor answers the Canoness' prayers to become invulnerable. He then goes out to lunch when it is the seraphims turn to pray for invulnerability.

The result? Seraphims....gone. As is 1 thunderwolf. Canoness and celestians stick around though, tying up the wolfstar for another turn.

Coming up, SW Turn 2.....

Teh space wolf army looks great, but I do have a minor quibble- shouldnt those wolves be on 60mm bases, like Canis wolfborn, who is ona 60mm base?

Much akin to demonic juggernaut cav. Seems like the SW player is getting more wolves in on the round Cav bases then he would 60MM ones.

Hope more old fools come to their senses and start giving you their money instead of those Union Jack Blood suckers...

There is no GW model for thunderwolves. Canis is a special character, so no real argument there. Till they make a TWC model and put it on a 60mm, then it'll be illegal. Till then, its fair game.

Have to call BS on that one. The tunderwolf character IS on a 60mm one. Its the only thunderwolf there is. Between him and blood crushers there is precident

Actually, Italiaplaya is right. The rules state that the model must be played on the base they come on, but there is no T.Wolf model so you can use what you like at this point. Hell, you could put him on a 25mm base if you wanted to.

I agree with you that they most likely will be on 60mm bases. But until a model gets made, it is up to the player making it.

And I am glad you like my Marines! That is my baby army, been working on it for years. Each Marine is unique, no two are exactly alike.

His arguement is that its a special character is meaningless though: Follow the logic-

Ragnar is a power armor guy.....on a 25 mm base, ego wolf lords in power armor should be 25mm

Grimmnar is a terminator armor special character......on a 40mm, ergo terminators should be on 40mm

Cain is on.....60mm and so on.

To be honest, your getting WAY too much advantage out of cav bases that should be 60mm- you wouldnt get nearly as many in combat on 60mm then cav bases,

Otehr then the bases, they're very well done.

It's kind of something up to opinion, as there are a few conflicting ideas.

1) Cavalry models of all sorts, including those that GW have released are on the rectangle (dunno the # x # sorry).

2) Canis is a special model.

3) GW hasn't taken it upon themselves to actually release the model in plastic yet, which kinda "Grinds My Gears".

On the topic of the battle report, my god, not even through turn 2 and it has taken this long. Amazing.

@Carmachu
I agree with you in spirit, I really do and think thwy eventually will be on 60mm bases. However, the rules are very clear on this issue. Since there is no model, you put it on whatever you want.

Just like a tervigon and a t-fex. Some people think they should be based on the 6" oval base like the trygon, others say the 60mm base like the cranie. Until the actual model is made, it's totally unclear.

@Wulfenone

The guys at the GW stores are notoriously bad at rules. A good tournament player will know the rules of the game better than most GW employees. That may not be the case in your store, but in general that is true. Don't take what they say as gospel because they are often wrong. For example, in my local store, the Manager often asks me for rules questions. Not saying I know all the rules, because I don't, just making a point.

Honestly though, it's an issue for YMDC. No need to derail jy2's battle report on a rules issue here.

Your argument for them being the same as blood crushers doesnt work either. Thunderwolves are unit type calv. (which is why he put them on a calv. base) blood crushers are unit type infantry (that just so happen to be on 60mm). Now that being said, I do believe they will be on a 60mm when a model comes out. However, till then he can do what he wants. (and has done so at all the tournaments he has gone to.)
