I've been a lucky player and never had GW write off one of my armies. Then again, Guard, Marines, Orks and the like are all pretty dependable, and have always been popular. But what about the Genestealer cults, Squats, Dogs of War, Lost and the Damned, and other armies that have been effectively taken out of the game? What do you folks do with them? Do you, like a friend of mine, still play with their army lists and lovingly converted models? Or do you just say screw it and pack the models up, to spend the rest of eternity in a box in the attic? Or do you just run them under a new codex as a counts-as solution?
I've always been curious, and hopefully I'll never know the frustration that this sort of thing brings. Share your armies! (and of course, pictures would be awesome )

My Lost and the Damned have been restructured into a Traitor IG army. Didn't hurt that I never really had many CSM units(those in it were already pulling double duty from the CSM army, anyway) in it or Mutants(only a unit of 30 Zombies, and they found their way into my friend's VC). My Cult of Slaanesh got turned into a Daemon Army and a DE army. Basically, losing them as armies got me to spend more money. ... I've been had!

I have a friend who uses squiggoths as battlewagons now that the feral list is illegal.
He really liked the Black Orks models he converted for mad boyz so he ended up doing his entire 4e army with those models.
He spent a ton of monies doing that.
Hmm, a theme?

Chaos Dwarves are alive and well with a new book (PDF) that was produced last year from the people who run the grand tournaments. I'll look for a link later.

I expect Deathwatch to actually be revised into a full army at some point. If GW does it half as well as FFG's been laying it out, you'll be in good hands

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

I don't know if you realize it but you can now again use a basilisk with chaos-y marines via the Tyrant's legion in the Imperial Armour IX Badab War book that came out in October. Granted, the army is best done as a mix of guard and marines but you can technically field all marines and still use basilisks.

Well, you could use those Apothecary sergeants as sanguinary priests if you ran as Blood Angels; you could do a pretty conservative counts-as.
I don't see Deathwatch getting their own army; there's not really enough to them. Aside from Marine kill teams, I don't know what else they'd actually do.
I also can't believe people would just scavenge their old armies for parts; I don't understand why folks wouldn't keep using old rulebooks in friendly games. If any of my armies were no longer tourney legal from GW, you bet your ass I'd still play them.

they're also still a legal force if your opponent doesn't mind forgeworld and you count them as red scorpions (or whatever the chapter is with apothecary tact sergeants in the badab war book).

Speaking as a "back to 1st ed" player, all I can say is: NEVER SELL ANYTHING!
Keep it. Put it in a box and let it age, like chedder. Wait for a new codex/edition/strat to emerge. This may take years. But when it finally does happen, the built up psychic dice energy of the unit will unleash in a storm of 6's!

My CSM army got split after Chaos turned into two separate books (fielding a Bloodthirster just doesnt feel right when he footslogs, and Bloodletters without Power weapons are just not Bloodletters). Then I found out how poorly Daemon (especially Khorne, ironically) plays in annhilation (due to the fact that my opponent always got a "free" shot at me), so they all got rebased and turned into a Fantasy Daemons Army (My soulgrinder wipes his tears with his many cobwebs). My CSM army, who weren't that good before loosing the Daemons, largely have been fractured into 4 cult armies, with Death Guard being currently the only one in fighting condition.

I recommend forging all those squatted armies into great and heavy chains, massing them into great heavy links and then wrapping them about Tom Kirby before hefting him off the end of the pier...

Always amuses me when people bring up armies that have been gone for over a decade. My first suggestion would be to get over it and stop crying about it years later.
My second suggestion would be to use a different list and enjoy all the hard work you put into collecting and painting them.
Squats - use them as guard.
Chaos Dwarves - use them as dwarves or even chaos warriors
Lost and the Damned - use them as guard
Genestealer cult - hmmm you guys actually are pretty fethed but I guess you could use them as just a normal Tyranid list.
Or even better get together with some good friends who will let you just use the old list. It really isn't that hard.

Certainly, those people should do just that, immediately after you send them the money they spend on the army they suddenly found no further support on from the company they bought the expensive miniatures from.
Or you could just hush your inflammatory commenting mouth.

I vaguely recall seeing an army around not so long ago where they had tailored them a little to use as an ork army.
Expanding them out a little and using them as a Guard or 'counts as' Tau Army and a Nid army would work in an Apocalypse game.
For that matter, you could possibly do something reasonable with Tau, using Fire Warrior stats for Cultists, and Kroot for Genestealers.

I've never had it happen to an army.
'Course, I didn't decide to play IW 4 heavy support/Basilisk spam, Lotd, squats (spits!), GC.
I've only ever played a core SM army (call it vanilla, Ultramarines, whatever). Sure, some options vanish (and sometimes they come back), but mostly, my 2nd SM is a playable 5th ed SM army. Same for my Eldar.
Sure, some units are no longer around. These lie unmourned and forgotten in a pre-melt box (this is where metal miniatures go to die. Once all the useful bits have been salvaged, they go into the crucible and are melted down.)
|
I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.
That is not dead which can eternal lie ...
... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.
