I want to know why a Techmarine can't repair his thunderfire cannon if it's destroyed.

You'd burn a whole turn attempting to repair it, so it doesn't seem all that unreasonable.

if its destroyed its destroyed. part of it might have been vaporized. the only way to repair it would be to bring another to battle.

It's 'destroyed' on a glancing hit. And by that logic, how does the techmarine repair a destroyed weapon on a vehicle?

personally i agree with you, a techmarine SHOULD be able to fix it but GW didn't think about that

Ya. I'm more or less just shouting into the wind. Just stinks when you whiff your save on your bolstered building and your AV10 cannon is insta-killed by a glance.

Its basically the softest target in the marine army...a better solution might have been giving it a n improved AV (and a servitor crew damn it) like the big guns rule in the IA books (Artillery units with Armour 11), personally I'd go with armour 12 since it rather looks like a small robotic tank).

In all fairness the cannon can unleash hell if left alone, and the glance that destroys it is the same with all other arty. You pay 100pts ( no codex in front of me ) for a techmarine and the cannon, what you get out of the piece bieng destroyed is completely fair to me, because the techmarine can then roam about if you can get him into cover quickly enough.

That's why a servitor crew would be the one obvious fix, cause when he gets smoked by a lascannon or something you lose all 100 points.

The Servitor Crew I could live with, just because I do not see a Techmarine walking around without the servitors to do the hard work, i.e. operation of the system. then he has a couple of guys capable of sponging wounds.

Considering how little it costs, and if placement and cover can be done correctly it's extremely powerful, I feel it's fine as it is.

Although I do agree that a servitor crew would be more appropriate.

What I hate is when it gets smoked turn 1. 100 points and a heavy support slot down the drain. I think it would be totally within reason to burn your next turn attempting to repair it. Roll your 5+ and it wasn't a total loss. Giving it wounds with the servitors would be a bit much for only 100pts.

You can add crew: Ultramarine Techmarines are independent characters. They can join units such as Artillery.

It works differently with the Thunderfire cannon. The techmarine is mated to the cannon until the cannon is gone then and only then is the Techmarine an IC.

No, the Techmarine Gunner is a single unit with the Thunderfire Cannon, while the Techmarine Elite unit is an independent character and who can join the Artillery unit to double its crew.

It is possible to add more techmarines, but that cuts into my Termintor and Dreadnought allowances.

Not really. A Terminator Squad and a Land Raider Crusader goes for about 400+ points. Call it 150pts apiece for a Tactical Combat Squad and a Razorback, for 300pts total. Round up HQ for 200pts, or thereabouts. Two Thunderfire Cannons and two basic Techmarines come in at 300ptss. For a 1500pt army, you now now have 300pts for stuff from the Fast Attack and Troop choices. I'd go for troops, to help occupy the heavily fortified ruins you should have available. A Master of the Forge and a Librarian should make for nice HQ.

Now the trick would be placing your Thunderfire Cannons on your flanks, so that they can cross-fire. Thanks to BS4, Thunderfire Cannons hit on a hit result of the scatter dice and a deviation of 4" or less. That means you have to roll 5 to deviate 1". In effect you're hitting on a 4+ on Rhinos and similar sized vehicles. Use Tremor ammunition to inconvenience stuff like enemy Land Raiders.

You're making a category error in assuming similar terms have the same referent. They do not. Damage (Weapon destroyed) is not the same as Destroyed (Wrecked). A Techmarine can repair a damage result on an active vehicle, not the whole of a wrecked vehicle.

Quit giving me bad ideas, I already want a land raider achilles, and I am now thinking of razorspam with thunderfire cannons to inconvience all of their stuff.

I don't move it out of whatever bolstered ruin I'm in. Was thinking tremor rounds might actually kill some skimmers and their embarked passengers with that new FAQ. Makes TF and night spinner more deadly

Metal models are already pretty tough, but the TFC is a real pain in the arse to put together. But it is a pretty sweet model!

Between Alpha and Omega, and a little to the left

I find the whole "killed first turn by a Lascannon" rather silly, because even if the Lascan was fired from a space marine it's chances would be about .222 if it's in a reinforced ruin/forest like it's suppose to.

However, being able to buy a servitor crew would really improve it.

I find that for the most part, the unit as a whole is fine (could be lowered in points 10 or 20 to make up for the fragility of the gun). Most players do not ever see this unit enough on the table top to know what it does or how good it can be. Throw this sucker in a bolstered ruin and it can be pretty durable. And if your opponent still wants to waste AT shots at the cannon then your tanks will be free to roam around the board.

Agreed, but, problem is, with AV10, it is also threatened by most anti-infantry weapons : Heavy Bolters, Heavy Stubbers, even a Stormbolter on a Rhino can destroy it!!

I wouldn't waste my AT shots on the cannon...

Anyone played with or against the LR Achilles? I am wondering if an AV14 tank with multi-meltas and a mounted thunderfire cannon changes a lot of stuff in a game.

Yggdrasil,

Though you don't waste AT shots on them, many of my opponents do! Personally, I usually just leave it alone until I am close enough to just assault it and neutralize it, unless I am running my DOA Blood Angels.
