As some of you might know, there is a classic hex game called "Ogre" which involves giant robotic death machines driving around the world destroying human armies and nuking each other. There have been several versions over the last 34 years, including one with 6mm miniatures.
Now, Steve Jackson Games is going to release a massive 6th edition of the game, with many of the expansions included, constructable standup buildings and Ogres, and anticipated retail price of $100. Why should you be interested? This is an opertunity to get a complete fancy version of a classic wargame, which is reputed to be a ton of fun.

Can we use metal Ogres with it? Just wondering if my old stuff will be useless or not(I doubt my beloved Ogrethulhu will be in it, though).

I think that the hexes are 1.5 inches, which is the same as Ogre Deluxe. So the metal miniatures should work.
Not much hope for Ogrethulhu.

I remember Ogre fondly. Wish I still had my red cover edition that originally cost $3--which back in the late 70's was a lot of money then!
But $100 for cardboard cut outs? I don't think so! I'd expect plastic minis at least for that price.
They really should make a RTS computer game of it.

Chits are not cheap, despite their appearance. In fact, for a limited run game, I suspect that the coardboard is more costly than plastic would be.

$100? You sure you didn't put an extra 0 in there somewhere? I've enjoyed Ogre immensely the times I've played it (including a 28mm scale version at Historicon one year, complete with a scratch-built Ogre to scale) but I always thought the appeal was that it was a cheap game you could play anywhere.

From what I understand, models were only introduced rather recently(around the mid-late 90's), before that, it was a chit boardgame.

I played Ogre a few years ago, and enjoyed it. I don't know if I enjoyed it $100 worth, though.
Still, I might pick it up. If nothing else I can always use hex tiles for Battletech maps, and have a game some of my friends have never played.

It's a new edition, yes. For a board game of that size, though, $100 is far from uncommon.

That was my first thought.
Reading that open letter, Steve Jackson is either engaging in some strange form of postmodern art, or he's a few tokens short of a board game.

Ahh Ogre, back in the days of Avalon Hill, west end games, TSR and all the other great oldies but goodies.
I loved Ogre, and Ogre GEV and all the other expansions, alot of fun but...
as Nurglitch said

That was a awesome game to bad FASA folded shortly after its release, Centurion, Interceptor, Leviathan, and all the other Renegade legion games were incredibly fun to play.
Makes me kinda sad that they are gone..

So true. So very true. I loved the game mechanics of all three games.

I'm a huge fan of Steve Jackson Games, especially Ogre and Car Wars, but I think they've really missed the mark here. Had they put a $60 price tag on this I would have pre-ordered one or maybe two sets, but $100 is almost insulting for a boxed game with cardboard cut-out pieces.

Why do people talk about Centurion like they can't play it anymore? Did you lose your copy or something?

I have the original little folio version that came in a small plastic envelope years ago. I think it cost between $4 to $6 dollars! The first expansion at the time, GEV I think it was called, also came in a small plastic envelope and cost less than $10. It's kind of cool to see this game is still around in any form.

I've only played the original "folio" versions of the game and I can tell you that it was tons of fun and I played it many times back in the day when it was new. That small version was quick easy fun with lots of replay value. I don't know how quick a game is with these newer larger versions, but it sounds like it hasn't changed at all in concept from looking at the SJG website. It's definitely at least worth a look.

Yeah, the price is high, but they know their target market is buying the game for nostalgic reasons, and now has the disposable income they lacked when the game first came out 30 years ago. It'll sell just fine.

Yippie!! I've waited years for an updated version of Ogre. Its great that its including all the expansions and extra unprinted material. As for the chits, they look good and much better than the old black and white ones. I love that they are full color with detailed pictures. The miniatures are nice, but a little odd on a hex map, but still usable with this set. Hopefully if this sells, they'll re-relese the miniatures rulebook. I'm going to pick up a copy as its one of my all time favorite games and all of it fitting in one box, it'll be easy to store and move around. As for the $100 price tag, blame Fantsy Flight Games. Once people started shelling out that much for boxed games, it was all over. Although I bet you could get it cheaper at Amazon or ebay it you don't want to support your FLGS or one of the last small game companies.
