Subject: Bad Behavior In Game Stores

Ancient Chaos Terminator

I've met so many nice people since I started spending much of my hobby time at local game stores about 5 or 6 years ago, yet I don't know what it is about Warhammer that brings out so many badly behaved people too. I didn't see so many problems when I played historical simulation board games years ago and I've never seen strategy board game players behave in certain ways in game stores that are common with Warhammer. In the past week alone I've seen the following in local game stores strictly from Warhammer players: 1) One kid knee another in the butt and send him crashing into the painting/hobby table. 2) An adult with an obtrusive and obnoxiously loud ring-tone who also made babbling noises while assembling his models. The same loud voiced guy also complained that someone threw their dice at him in a game the day before. Since I've rarely ever seen him in a store where he wasn't either thoughtlessly or deliberately rude to employees, customers or both it's no surprise. Then he actually at one point made disparaging comments about the intelligence of someone else in the store. Amazing. 3) A kid who gets out of his seat dozens of times, sometimes multiple times in just a few minutes who bumps you every time he gets up and sits down. Even after moving my chair an additional foot away the problem persisted and I also had to ask him to stop kicking me, twice! Needless to say, it's fairly difficult to paint under such circumstances. Of course the parent just dropped him off and left him there with no supervision. Ugh. 4) Two, yes two different adult customers who talked continuously for several hours while in the store on two different days. Neither of these guys ever stopped talking for more than a few seconds in the space of 2 to 3 hours. Neither of these guys brought any models to work on or game with, they just talked incessantly for hours. Many people in the store, including the manager in one case were ready to pull their own heads off after a while just to end the pain. 5) A kid repeatedly cursing at and in front of other kids during a multi-player game. I'll be glad when the new Battle Bunker opens, at least in the larger stores it's possible at times to move around to "hide" from bad behavior till it passes. There's no escape in the smaller GW stores once the dung hits the fan or worse, sits down next to you!

Totally uniformed response. Everyone on the Internet thinks they are so smart. First of all, most of the blather was not hobby related. Second, when people talk continuously non-stop for hours moving from one topic to another without any breaks at all it is generally annoying to most human beings as that goes far beyond friendly into the realm of distracting nuisance. Many if not most of the people in the store were bothered by it, most people would be by such continuous yammering. Unless of course you are one of those people who also behaves that way. In general, it is bad social form to talk for 3 hours continuously about anything, hobby or otherwise, without giving people some respite.

Oh look. Another witty riposte.
There's nothing wrong with being annoyed by people coming in and just talking nonstop, and not actually having anything to say worth listening to or talking to anyone in particular.
In fact, that's something most people consider "annoying".

Anyways, in my game store there aren't really any people like that, but I would just suggest gaming with friends at home or going to a different store.

It could also be something called "conversation", particularly if it were between two (relatively) adult participants. I persoanlly enjoy a long conversation with lulls and swells, gently traversing the topics like walking through a beautiful wilderland. Sometimes my wife and I have company over for nothing more than the conversation!
However, what Kan said and what BrassScorp described are different things. Kan is right about verbal spewing and how annoying it can be, but Scorp wasn't specific about whether this was what actually occured. Of course, there are better venues for a polite conversation than an FLGS, especially if you're not there to make a purchase.

I gotta agree about poor behavior. During a tournament before Games of Concord shut down years ago, this guy was once loitering around, not even in the tournament! He would not only watch the tournament, he would pick up models that were still on the table without asking, say things like blah blah blah you should do this to get an extra 100 points, let me roll those dice you suck! I let it go as I pitied he couldnt even play that day. Eventually he left, but if he came back during the second game I wouldve probably shot off at the mouth to mind his own business and let people play how they want.

These reasons and many more are why it is one day SO COOL to have your own apartment, or better, game room. My only advice is to do your best with it. Everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) has their odd quirks and rudenesses. Hopefully they will mature. But even if they do, there's always someone else who's NEW and hasn't learned these ways yet. So you can either avoid the gamestore entirely (and miss the good side of socializing) or else you can try to figure out how to deal with odd behavior.
Because I have a secret to tell you.
Odd behavior is absolutely everywhere.
Cheers!

Ah, it seems the way its laid out is a spot unclear. See, I read it as 'two chaps having a conversation', but now that you've said that, I can see it can also be read as 'two different chaps on different occassions never shutting up'. Hmmm....Apologies if I got it the wrong way around. If that was the wrong way around? Or possibly the right....hang on, I think I'm confusing myself now....

Bingo. There was a time when I did game in store, but the group I was part of was good friends with the owner, he would even leave us the keys to lock up if we wanted to play later than he felt like staying. All we had to do when there was unacceptable behavior was give him a look and the problem was taken care of.

OP-
This is a social change in the general gamer community as a whole, not just isn't in your shop.
For one thing, the general bringing up the next level of gangers from older cats to younger has... gone. We don't see solid gaming communities putting the smackith down on unruly upstarts. I remember when and all that, but it has to do with an across the board society thing. These little !@#$'s think that its something about respect, or just being able to go into public and rage on, or just do what they do at thier own house with no structure.
We've been doing a good job of cracking down on it ourselves, but there is always the TFG's and the ones and twos that slip through the cracks. Of course, we've got a gameing shop full of cops, military, and generally ... older, more mature crowds that have a pretty strict in house social norm. Punks come in, try that maybe one time out of a hundred, and are easily schooled by thier conteperaries that if they want to stay welcome, they either pipe the !@#$ down, or get thier ears pined back. Best thing is to have the youngsters police up themselves, YOU know that you have a pretty good second, third, forth etc. generation when the shop continues to cultivate both social structure, AND a collective solid gaming crew. For the general D bag, we've got our own ways to deal with them...
One is to call them out and tell them to shut the !@#$ up, or GTFO. The other is to listen, rebut, and if the conversation goes outside of what people really want to talk about, you can stop that stuff too. We do alot of !@# talking out there in the real world, and if you haven't figured it out, Military and Police have a wide range of conversations. I can only guess what youngsers think of some of the conversations that we talk about.
I've noticed things like this though, happening EVERYWHERE. We have to crack a few skulls at work, you have to call someone out sometimes when they want to start up in public, and even once of all times, in the grocery store. It isn't confined to kids, either. People in general are losing thier social norms.
How do YOU deal with it?
One way is a Louisville Slugger, or a nice Crowbar...
OR
You have a collective general conversation that addresses these issues and how does your game crew supposed to, or want to, deal with it. Somethines, people are so afraid of confrontation that they go puss and don't even want to deal with it. They'll let someone be a jagoff in thier own store, and let it happen, because they are either scared, puss, or just don't see it as thier place to keep general collective shop standards.
Biggest, and most difficult thing, I've seen is shops that don't know how to cultivate, or manage a social identity. They want to be EVERYONE to everything, and be everyones pal.
The unfortunate thing about it though, is that not every customer is important, and sometimes, Like that guy said on clerks- "The customer is an a!@##$%."
You are one of how many gamers in your area that your playing at? You need to get with them and see what they want to do. Otherwise, sorry dude, but you are just going to have to suck that one up and put up with thier ... eccentricities.
I say to the rest of you to not bag on this guy and start stuff, because you all know that he's saying what you have seen as well. This stuff has become more prevelent in the general public, and it is creeping into the stores, too.
I sympathise with you, but believe me- There are ways to deal with it.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

I've been incredibly lucky in this aspect. The only real disturbance I remember having to witness was an older lady with dementia coming into the GW store saying "Help me!" Apparently her husband was getting a haircut, and she didn't want to get one. Somehow this manifested itself into some sort of episode where she thought her minder and the hair cuttery staff were trying to get her. She literally went to the back of the shop, trying to get anyone in the store to help her. I felt bad for the guy working the shop. He really didn't know what to say. Hell, none of us did. The minder was at her wits end too. Every time she tried to usher her out of the store, it made things worse. Finally her husband showed up and they were able to get her out to the van and I guess back to the old folks home. The whole time, this lady was asking for help from us.
I do believe that the manager of the GW then stated the the store was closed for the rest of the day after that. Jokingly...

People having conversations in store when I'm playing a game.
... Having to think back to the last time I played in a store - it was a while ago, somewhere around 13 years or so (maybe more) ...
I don't think I ever noticed them. If I was concentrating on what I was doing, then I don't see or hear anything else around me that isn't an "AHWOOGA!".
Kids in my club doing it while hanging around the table where I'm playing my game (and discussing crap like yu-gi-oh or poke-yer-mom or other cartoons for 6 year olds) just get told to take it elsewhere. Like the other side of the room, and to close the folding doors.
