On hive planets which are over crowded with food and water really limited, do you think the hive would have plants processing their citizens own feces made into steaks? burgers? or poop burgers? are there any fluff that would support this?...water recycling on ships are common but food recycling not so...just curious as to what a normal Hive citizen eats...

I don't know if they would be called burgers. I know that they have to import a huge amount of resources, including food and water. I would assume that they would have a large reclamation capability.

Well, they process dead bodies to make food, so human waste would certainly be used. I'm pretty sure that ships reclaim waste.

In my opinion, the unbelievable number of people on hive worlds means that any kind of technology which can preserve/create/extend resources will be used. So, yes, I think so. Of course, I could be wrong.

Seems sensible enough. For a fantasy overcrowded hive world that is...not saying I would not be revolted at such an idea. It makes sense if Hive Worlds do such things so that their population can survive and continue duty to the Imperium

I belive that they would on some level do recycle their waste into food but I also belive that you are limited in how long you can do that. You would still need a influx food to make "fresh food" out of.

Walk in the shadows and deliver the Emperor's justice into dark lairs of his enemys. Strike from the shadows and let them fear the very darkness they call home. Embrace the shadows for when all others would be driven mad we shall remain whole.

Recycling waste into food is a fairly common staple of scifi in general. It would certainly be right at home in 40K.

And ultimately, it's really no different to recycling water.

Or eating fruit.

I believe in the Cain novels they refer to Soylens Veridians(Soylent Green) quite a bit. If they can stomach that, no reason why they wouldn't stomach the other stuff.

it is mentioned in Dark Mechanicus that Hive Worlds have massive reclaimaters which take the waste from a hive city and process it into food and water.

the 'food' is mostly a tasteless(thank goodness) nutrient paste. It can be assumed you can buy flavored paste. the richer citizens can buy real food.

Space Marine power armor does this as a bonus feature to allow the marine to function without food for long periods.

Yep, any biological waste and any source of "nutrient" oh what the hell, read dead body is processed into tomorrows food.
It starts at the top of the spire on hive worlds with the rich eating real food. Then it starts being recycled. By the slums at the bottom, what they're taking in has been recycled several times over. I think theres mention of it on a 40k background website article, taken from an old GW source which rang a bell with me

And I bet people who watched Demolition Man though the rat burgers would be unappetising

I believe theres a bit in one of the Space Wolves novels where they're storming a hive and the protagonist gets his exposition on about how yucky it is that they recycle dead bodies.

Yeah... they weren't great books...

Everyone's faeces gets recycled into food by a normal biosystem.

In a Hive City it would be easier to put all organic waste into a huge tank which digested it down and squeezed out nutrient rich bacteria cells which could be dried and formed into food bars or something like that.

The Megacities in Judge Dredd recycle dead bodies, they have huge conveyor belts with the dead on them going off to be processed. Viewing areas allow family and friends to witness their loved ones' corpses moving along to be made into something useful for the city.

I'd assume that the richest hive citizens could get proper food imported (either that, or there's a special vat for the highest-quality poo..).

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

They used to reference "Spook" in some of the old confrontation fluff. I believe it was food made from dead people. If you found an old fermented batch it produced hallucinogenic effects and could lead to psychic abilities.

Ive actually read that the diet of an Imperial Citizen varies by the circumstances that they live in.
Like an agri-world could produce live stock and grain for meat and vegetable products.
Whereas an industrial world would give out food packs (remarked at in Sons of Fenris, where Haegr finds nothing but food packs to eat during the Dark angels siege of hyades).

Well, yeah and no.

Remember that in "His Last Command", Gaunt executed some former Hive World Munitorum staff for rendering down dead bodies, causing a massive outbreak of disease at a forward fire base, and selling the rations earmarked for the fire base on the black market.

It's more likely that the "processed" dead bodies/waste are done in a very very very specific manner to create some kind of tasteless gruel and fed to mutants rather than the human population proper.
