Not all Anime is the same.
That's like saying "I dislike movies because they're live action."

Some Anime is slowed. Some of it is good.

I do not care for most of it. Enjoyed it when I was younger but as I got older I found it repetitive and even a bit nauseating: similar animation styles, similar mile wide inch deep philosophical spouting, similar misogyny, ect ect. The rare gem that is good is very good, but I rarely find it to be worth the trouble to be honest. If someone I trust makes a recommendation I will watch it. Probably the biggest problem with anime is, of course the fans, who tend to confuse obsession for enthusiasm.

Either you're still young, still watching the series, or haven't seen it in a while.

I sat down to watch a couple episodes when it was on recently. The entire series (including all spinoffs and movies) could be compressed into about 5 half-hour episodes if they got rid of the 45-episode fights, powering-up-to fight, and unrelated stupid gak that was supposed to be comic relief.

Some anime is ok, but like most tv shows, they're hit or miss. Mostly miss.

Oh sweet, sweet truth.

I can count on one hand the number of anime films I can sit through, the number of shows that I like is even fewer.

Also: I currently, and will always, love Dragonball Z.

The DBZ thing was a joke though. Yes me and my friends used to watch it all the time back when we were younger, in between bong rips of course.

Considering most Anime has a summary that begins with "[Male name), a young high school student, is having a boring/lonely/whatever life and...", YES. High school wasn't so special that I want to be reminded of the blind stupidity of the administrators, the cruelty of the fellow students, and the generally boring nature of the studies which seemed to be designed for someone years younger than I was every day.

I like anime such as Berserk (when will he get to damn work on the next season? It's been how long, now?), Hellsing, Noir, Gurren Lagann (I finally broke down and watched it, and while it's not as brain-shatteringly good as people said it would be, it's still excellently enjoyable entertainment every episode), Samurai Champloo, FMA:Brotherhood, etc.

Dismissing all Anime out of hand is narrow minded.
It is like saying I don't like all films because some are crap.

The Ahtman quote was reasonable imho, the series do tend to regurgitate the same tired olf tropes through the story arcs.
Much mainstream cinema is equally guilty of this.

However there are anime worth watching for relaxation and some that are absolute gems.

Minmei isn't that terribly porportioned. She's just annoying as hell.

Personally, the only anime that I enjoy is Full Metal Alchemist, Robotech (First Season, where people actually died and the characters grew up), Trigun ("In the ammount of time we have been talking here, I could have killed you four times!" "In the time we have been talking here, I could have GROPED you five times!" *Buttons fall off her shirt* ), and my guilty pleasure anime has to be Hellsing. Anderson is just too bad ass.

Blech. I know it's closer to the mangoes, but I just can't stand Brotherhood. It just seems..... worse? I don't know, it might just be because I've only been exposed to FMA due to the original series.

So, Death Note is in the same vein as Full Metal Alchemist?

A serious, thriller type anime compared to a comedic, Sci-fi type anime. Because they're both Anime?

So, by that logic, Two and a Half Men is in the same vein as Law and Order. Because they both have actors.

Right.

I think Beserk is finally getting another season, but really just read the manga instead. The manga's been ongoing for years now, and there is loads more to the story now. But I'd start from the beginning - the anime cut a large portion of the story - including reducing the Black Swordsman arc down to a single episode, and removing a few key points of Gattsu's history during the Golden Age arc. Some of these points change Gattsu's character a good deal, too, IMO.

But that's my usual gripe with Anime. They always cut things, change things they shouldn't, or add in stupid filler crap that's not in the manga. I have little patience with most anime, with the exception of Miyazaki's works which are not based on manga. The only anime I've found thus far where I prefer the anime to its manga is Nodame no Cantabile - which if you are looking for something unique and good, I highly recommend that anime series. (That, of course, doesn't keep me from reading the manga to find out what happens next, but that's me being impatient...) But otherwise, I say just go straight to the source and read the manga.

I think I'm growing out of it. I used to love watching stuff based on Katsuhiro Otomo, Masamune Shirow, and Rumiko Takahashi's works. I used to have DVDs of other stuff too like Rurouni Kenshin. I've since gotten rid of all my anime and don't keep up with the stuff as much. I still very much like manga, though... Shirow's stuff especially.

Right.

Wrong. One is comedy, one is drama. They are different styles. You are comparing two genres of anime (a style) to two styles of television program ( a medium). That's your error. You seem to think that by saying something is in the same style, I'm saying it's in the same genre, and so should share the same generic indicators. It's broader than that.

Animation is a medium. Anime is animation in the Japanese style. 'Sci-Fi Anime' would be the genre.

Television is the medium (roughly). Comedy is the style. Situation Comedy is the genre.

Hope this helps.

I don't care about that... as long as it's good. Mind you, most filler isn't very good. But sometimes the changes and the filler are still entertaining to watch.

The twin FMA series for example-- yeah, I think Brotherhood is better... but only because it's better written, not because it's based more on the manga than the first one. The first FMA anime series was still very much entertaining, more so than many series which ARE loyal to their manga.

This could very well be because I can't stand manga. Western style comics are far superior to Japanese style comics in my view.
