OMG I totally forgot, I love Totoro and The Cat Returns. Me and the girlfriend watch them all the time. For some reason I don't even associate them with anime lol

This is something that I debate to myself all the time. When I was younger I wanted to be an animator. I even went to art school. The art scene however, ruined my taste for art and so did art college, so i dropped out and got a job in IT. Back then I watched a ton of Anime. Over the years I slowly stopped watching it. Now that Netflix instant streaming has a ton on there I am watching it again, but I am finding it the same old recycled stories. The same old hero or anti-hero and the same main character. It all seems so cookie cutter to me.

Also, anything rated PG 13 or lower seems to be too childish or immature to me. I also am finding a lot of them that do have good stories seem to use the same character development tools. Back in the 90s we got a hold of some fan subs of Neon Genesis and we loved it. Watching it now as a much older adult....I like it, but not as much.

I was sick last winter with a cold and on break (I work for a school system, so I get winter break off) and decided to watch Moribito, which I actually did like overall. It sort of falls under the same problem most new Anime does. It is mass marketed, and thus mainstream in some way or another so it is dumbed down to make sales.

FWIW just about all animation today is heavily influenced by anime. Whether its cartoons about Western superheroes, Pixar CGI or wannabe Pixar CGI, Disney, blockbuster CGI characters, etc.

The posts complaining about big eye cutesy stuff....well just about every cartoon in any country has those elements especially those intended for younger audiences, FWIW

Ok, I'm going to try to get my 2 cents in before this thread locks

1. If you don't like anime, let it be, don't make stupid threads about it or post you dislike it in an anime thread, treat it like a horshoe crab: yeah, it exists, yeah it may be strange, but, it's just there, you don't have to like it.

2. Not all anime is the same, thinking so is the height of ignorance. Saying so would imply that naruto and eden of the east are the same.

3. Like someone stated in another thread, dismissing things as childish because they're aimed at a younger audience and/or you're trying to be mature is, in fact, immature.

4. There's a wide variety of anime, don't just use a few titles to judge the whole medium.

Did you even read the thread? I cited some anime that I actually enjoyed. You seem to be the one trolling here.

Furthermore, why are you even posting here if you take such offense to others not enjoying what you do?

Yes, I did read it, but there were others posting as well who didn't. I'm not at all offended, not at all, in fact, this reminds me of a thread on myanimelist.com, where some /b/ user posted how much they hate anime, and the thread went on for 12 pages before it was deleted, in short, it was angry neckbeards arguing amongst themselves about anime, it was entertaining.

wut

That's what he's thinking of..

that and allot of hanna barbara cartoon characters had big eyes, and some of todays kids cartoons are just pathetic, never mind big eyes its just big everything.

but then the west hasn't got japanese people doing it all, and most of the west just despises anyone not white so I guess that doesn't help

AND DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT MODS, I WASN'T BEING RACIST JUST POINTING OUT WELL KNOWN FACT, SO KEEP YOUR CLAWS OFF.

Actually, that is pretty racist and it's just downright flamebait, which is against DakkaDakka rules.

Thanks,

For what it's worth

Anime's "Big Eyes" was influenced by American cartoons...notably Snow White

While disagreeing with Albie's strange and, frankly, crazy* dislike of anime, as I understand it Anime is indeed a style of animation.

Film or video/CGI would be the medium.

*

/pedantry.

BTW Not all Anime is about scantily clad schoolgirls and fan service.
Just most of it!

edit My Neighbour Totoru is one of my favourite FILMS of all time.

Don't worry Albatross, just because people don't agree with you, doesn't make you any less right. People could disagree that the we need oxygen to live, but they'd still suffocate without it.

I don't like anime as a style. I don't enjoy Naruto, Full metal alchemist etc simply because I don't relate to them.
I do however really enjoy Studio Ghibli films, but those movies are works of art. And anime, I find, seems to be drowning in generic, same protagonist gak. While there are gems, I find it as a genre, somewhat lacking.

This is not an anime website. While going onto an anime website and stating you don't like anime could be considered trolling, not here. Indeed most of those not overwhelmed by anime are noting good faith reasons, and also most are noting they in fact like some of it.

Be careful of unintended consequences. I'm down with banning anti anime threads if I can get rid of the ten a month "whats your favorite anime" threads too.

A valid argument for making an anime thread sticky, or allowed to dig up, like the comic book thread.

The fact of the matter is anime was originally influenced directly by betty boop in the 50s and since the late 90s western cartoons are heavily influenced by anime, the same way all horror films are influenced by hammer house of horror movies and such, to be honest i cant think of a film, series, cartoon, book, or song that hasnt in some way been influenced by another creative source.
we should rejoice and share the things we do like not spend hours hating and debating the things we dont. ha that rhymes

I don't mind the more "grown up" anime, but I can't stand the kiddy cartoony stuff, and I can't stand any anime with bad acting, so I guess that means I hate it all. But that also goes for any foreign film though. And no, I'm not gonna watch a movie so I can read subtitles for 2 hours. Plucking my own belly button lint would be more fun...

Oh, I don't mind foreign films at all. I watch a lot of them on Netflix.

My only problem with subtitles is that sometimes I don't want by attention being drawn from the action on screen, but I'm too lazy to learn French or Chinese so I suppose I'll just have to bear that particular cross.

for subtitles I find that the smaller screens are better for watching than widescreens

that way you can keep your field of visionfocused on the action and the subtitles at once

failing that i suggest sitting far enough that you can still read the subtitles but keep everything centered at the same time

I don't really like it, most of the time I have no idea what the hell is going on. I tried watching one called Bleach one night and it was jumping scene to scene, very hard to follow. These guys were fighting on a roof with swords bigger than themselves and cuts to two young women drinking tea in a dojo! I guess I have watch from the beginning of the season to understand whats going on in later episodes. The only anime I ever enjoyed was Bo Bobobobobo or something like that.

funny...a lot of the anime's i've seen go like this:

*evil laughter/monstrous gurgly sounds*

High-pitched squeal: Ieeeeee!!! (noooo!!!)

*sickening squishy slurpy sounds*

High-pitched squeal: Yamette!!! (stoooop!!)

*squishy sounds continue*

Crouching Tiger was terrible about that because so much exposition happens in fight sequences.

It does sound strange, but it's nowhere near as strange as russian dubbed anime.
