Personally I like the humorous touch on the parrot most of all. Admiral Parrot?

This is the new White Dwarf model, an exclusive Citadel Finecast miniature that is only available to those of you that have a White Dwarf Subscription. The model will be available to existing subscribers from the 29th October, and new subscribers can get their hands on him as soon as they start their White Dwarf subscription. As you can see from the picture above, it is a rather tasty model, lovingly sculpted by Giorgio Bassani. In previous years, Grombrindal (for that is his name) has taken on the guise of a Dwarf Warrior, a Space Adventurer, an Aviator and now, a swashbuckling Pirate.

It's a great model. Is it worth getting a WD subscription for? Definitely not.

I couldn't agree more. My current subscription ends in exactly 12 months. It's been running for years because I resubscribed for several years at once during the last time they offered free issues and other merchandise or discounts to resubscribe. If they are still in this "no deals or special offers mode" they've been stuck in now for the past few years I may let my subscription lapse for the first time in 2 decades. Pricing has gotten way out of line the past couple years and the arrogance of the upper management recently in both pricing, service and other policy changes is offensive.

Oh, I really enjoyed your typo of "moist" for the word "most". Moist amusing!

No, the age of "failcast" (ugh, people saying that makes me wretch) was when Finecast stuff first came out and the quality control was terrible. Things have evened out.

The model looks good. I like the White Dwarf sculpts, even if I don't have any use for them in-game.

At the risk of derailing my own thread, I don't see any less problems with Finecast now than I did when it was first released. Besides being for the most part terribly expensive even compared to the metal models it replaced, it is still necessary to open every package of it in the store before leaving because the need for exchanges is just as common now as it was the week they rushed it into stores. Quality control on what goes out of the warehouse is still a HUGE issue. I see complaints and exchanges all the time. I've been avoiding buying much of it, but the last set I bought just a week ago had a broken piece and the store manager graciously opened another to get me a replacement. The week before I watched them play "musical boxes" trying to get a good quality cast of a certain model for another customer. Certain models are bad every time because there are clearly flaws in the mold, yet GW continues to crank them out without first correcting the problem.

And some other ordinarily very positive people I know also felt compelled to discuss recent problems:

Great sculpt! I would certainly buy one of them... If they gave me a free WD subscription for a year

Just shame that WD seems to have become less and less interesting to me over the last year or so, it has less hobby and more 'BUY THIS!' crammed into the pages nowadays.

Anyway, love the sculpt, I have never heard of this Giorgio Bassani dude, is he new to GW? Whatever the case he has impressed me with the amount of detail stuffed onto Grombrindal.

Yes, there is a significant per issue price break for subscribing over buying it over the counter one issue at a time, but it's still not what you'd call "cheap" by any standards.

In the US, White Dwarf is $9 per issue. A 1-year subscription is $75, 2 years is $140.

Like many White Dwarf models before it. A nice curiosity, but really really not worth forking out a WD subscription for (before you even get to paying for the mini itself)

I did as well.

Not bad, but not worth entertaining WD over. Maybe if they reissued the Long Drong Slayers, or republished the Lustria book, or opened up a World Wide Campaign over....

But just for the rag?

No.

Not as a snack for a magazine subscription, or a reissue of a real pirate dwarf army that has a use in the game.

All this is is a dwarf without a use.

Got enough of them already, why would I need another one.

Ok, I am getting sick and tired of people saying Failcast. Why? To me anyone who complains about getting a free minature has no credibility now. I guess it's one thing to say you do not like Finecast because you do not like what it's made off, but it's another thing to complain because of imperfections. If you have any imperfections, call the 1 800 number and GW will fix it for you. In most cases you will get a full feldge mini, so basically you will get a free miniture.

I bought a Fine Cast Zoanthrope. It was missing one small fin and I called asking for a replacement fin. When my order came in, I got a complete new blister. So basically at no extra cost to me, GW gave me a free miniture. Yes I still have a mini without a fin, but now I got 2 Zoanthropes. While one is imperfect and not complete, GW did rectify the situation and I beleive went over and beyond.

Complain as you want, but at least GW stands behind their product 100%. Not happy with it, call them up. Not happy about it and not calling? Well now you are just the fool then. There really is no use of complaining. So far I am liking the Finecast and I can't call it Failcast at all, since if I am unhappy about it, GW has made me happy by rectifing the problem.

At least GW has excellent customer service. That is one thing you really can't complain about GW.

Sorry got angry for a second. This will not make get a WD subscription. I haven't bought a WD in years since the quality of the magazine to me has gone down.

All I see WD is a glorified advertising for GW that I HAVE TO PAY FOR. So this mini does not entice me at all to get a WD subscription.

And no your wrong, GW doesn't stand behind their product 100%....infact they sell you a kit so you can fix it yourself and not have to bother them with complaints like; missing pieces, mis-formed bodyparts, resin bubbles ( just use superglue...HAHAHA ), crisp details (and if you buy that one I got some water under a bridge that is 'nice and crisp' and i'll sell it to you for a song ) all with signifigant price increase. Thats the worst part they rush this 'new wonderproduct' that will replace ' the evil metal that was making us increase prices' without fully testing it, with out training personal in how to pour it and cure times and to me personally it seems like the quality isn't getting any better. I still see pictures of models that make me cringe when I remember how much people are paying for this "New revelation in model production".

Personally I don't like the feel of it, I don't like the material and if I wanted resin I would buy Forgeworld or another companys products. For those people who say "FailCrap" is easier to work with them metal are fooling themselves. There is a whole host of tool's and new materials you now need to do just to make the model complete. How is that easier?

As for WD, it's been a rag for about 4 years or so. There has been almost no hobby content other then a few Eavy Metal Masterclasses (which they could of put on the website instead of padding out the page count in WD). All the rag is is one big 'o0o0 shinezz buy now NOW NOW NOW!!!' I understand that a inhouse magazine had to promote its own products, there is nothing wrong with that WD has been doing that for a long time now. But it's always had other content in it. The battle reports have always been fixed but not in the way most people think. There used to be heaps of 'build it yourself' stuff but since GW now sells there own line of gameboards and terrain why would we want people to make stuff, buy ours....even though we see the same crappy RoB and terrain in all the pictures, it's depressing.

Hmmm.... so GW sending you a complete new mini because something is wrong is not standing 100% behind their product? Of course people who don't call have to fix everything themselves.

Still I can understand about not liking the feel of the material.

I haven't bought a WD in over 5 years. I agree there is No Hobby Content at all and that is when I stopped collecting WD.

I am not sure what will get me back into collecting WD again. One thing I know for sure is getting them after everyone else by mail, will NOT get me starting to get a WD subscription. I almost got one just because I would have got it a week earlier, but now a week later? No thank you.

Also I want Hobby Articles, not just But the latest releases. Also I want to feel I am buying a Hobby Magazine not just an Advertisement.

Same here, I know it's a inhouse publication so it's going to pimp GW products. I can understand and accept that, but they don't need to beat us over the head with it ie The Giant issue, the whole issue basically amounted to 'OMFG getZ a GIANT~!!!!111!12 Thez are da roxorzzz1!@!#!@#21321321'. But atleast it wasn't as bad as Mat Wards quote on the webpage about something to do with the blood angels "It's so overpowered your opponent will be asking to see the rules because they will think you are cheating!" (rolls eyes) really? That really is pandering to the lowest common denominator.

But I know the old days are long gone and never comming back. I know things will never be like they where...blah blah

I think, maybe, and only maybe, what will get me starting to get WD again is if in every issue, they have something like (damn, forget the name since it's been so long) where they bring in new rules. I think it was called Chapter Approved.

I also want quality articles again about converting and painting, stuff to do with the Hobby, and no more fake Combat Reports.

Also I want more Lord of the Ring stuff again. For a while at one time, they were the best stuff in WD, at least for me.
