Into the past? Or to the unknown future?
Or which era and time period would you visit?

What if Earth doesn't exist in year 2999 and you set the time machine to go to that time? hmmmm!

I'd do both, go to interesting times in the past, see what the future is like. Just for the laughs also give my past self the designs to the time machine.

Though being a time machine it would mean the past and future of that spot. So if the earth didn't exist then you'd just be floating where it was.

Edit: I'd also visit my future self to see if I figured out how to make it travel through space as well to keep it interesting.

Hmmm.... Good question. There are a few people back in the '60s I would like to go back and give them a good bitchslapp as a grown up version of myself. But otherwise I can think of a few things I would like to buy in the past and have at the present, like Apple stock.

The Earth is constantly moving - not only around its own axis, but in orbit around the sun. Not only that but the sun itself is moving through space. Thus without some kind of compensation for drift, etc (assuming that you were locked to that specific absolute location in space when you pressed the "go through time" button), you would quickly find yourself moving in time a few seconds and emerging in empty space.

Having said that I would travel forwards in time, see what stocks etc are going to be good, travel back in time (pre-me going forwards) to a time when human settlement was sparse with a nice map of mineral deposits and aquire myself some gold, diamonds, etc that I could then sell in "normal" time, buy stocks that would do well in the future, (rinse and repeat until I have lots of stocks) then travel into the future again, cash in my stocks for lots of cash, buy cool cybernetic implants and then explore all of time.

I'd hesitate before doing anything because of the whole butterfly effect scenario. I caress even the smallest string that lead up to my life and I could effectively erase myself from existence.

I'd abuse time to make myself wealthy for starters. Of course, I'd have to be extra manipulative to get that way. Make a ton of money betting on something, stash it under a rock, then come back to the present and find it. I'd also have to stay as far away from my past self as possible, including family, friends, anyone I ever interacted with.

I'd go back and save all the missing episodes of Dr Who and other TV series.

Then once my good work is done for humanity, well I'd go exploring, and there's always the opportunity to make a little money along the way.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Because selling from my private collection doesn't incur the same taxes.

When was the last time you reported Craigslist and personal eBay sales on your taxes?

Would the time machine have its own "field" to protect the occupant in such a situation?

I'm sorry but killing Hitler, Stalin and other evil baddies would fail and possibly end in other horrible events. That's the sad truth but I know what I'd do.

Show George Lucus how people hate the new ones and tell him to not screw it up.

The biggest indicator someone is a loser is them complaining about 3d printers or piracy.
