I know theres already an iranian thread, but this deserves its own:

An order from Gen Mohammed Ali Jaafari, the commander of the guards, raised the operational readiness status of the country’s forces, initiating preparations for potential external strikes and covert attacks.
Western intelligence officials said the Islamic Republic had initiated plans to disperse long-range missiles, high explosives, artillery and guards units to key defensive positions.
The order was given in response to the mounting international pressure over Iran’s nuclear programme. Preparation for a confrontation has gathered pace following last month’s report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna that produced evidence that Iran was actively working to produce nuclear weapons.
The Iranian leadership fears the country is being subjected to a carefully co-ordinated attack by Western intelligence and security agencies to destroy key elements of its nuclear infrastructure.
Recent explosions have added to the growing sense of paranoia within Iran, with the regime fearing it will be the target of a surprise military strike by Israel or the US.

The sound of a ground attack aircraft taking off hot and heavy means someone going to have a bad day. Since they're deploying units in areas that needs potecting.....B52 leaves a massive foot print....or a Fuel Air Bomb would pretty much sterilize the area. Still though...I don't blame them.

US officials admit that they lost control of a drone over the Iranian border, but didn't say if it was shot down or not.

Did the Iranians ever get around to replacing the F4 Phantoms that the U.S. sold them in the 70s? Surely they must have one or two MIG 29s eh?

If by something you mean airstrikes sure, were I Israel I'd be more concerned about the situation brewing in Egypt...kind of hoping the Gyppos don't try to hit the Jews again, it probably will be bloody on both sides. the IDF be slippin

I thought we were always more concerned about their F 14s; and IIRC Iraq mauled thier air force.

That was twenty-odd years ago now mind, they have had a long time to rebuild. And they actually make their own fighters and tanks (which should give some way of comparison between their and Iraq's military capability). Going on size and power of army, it was only the not inconsiderable monetary and military support the US and the UK gave to Iraq that stopped them getting steamrollered in the war with Iran.

Not really but they did fake the previous shooting down of a drone as well as became the laughing stock of the world over their photoshopped missiles.

Guided artillery shell for us is called a Copperhead. Need a laser designater for that. Insurgents do not have heavy artillery either. So can't blame them

A Trillion dollars/pounds spent on fighting/rebuilding over 10 years

China getting stronger by the year.

Iran potentially disrupting oil exports from Saudi Arabia/Iraq at a time of global recession

And finally David Cameron presiding over a 'war' cabinet. I wouldn't trust this guy to lead my orcs and goblins into battle, never mind the UK armed forces!

I love the idea that china is a GROWING threat. Every day that goes by is another day that our economies have grown together like vines.

The more entrenched we get in each other's manufacturing/consuming, the LOWER the odds that we'll ever go to war.

True. Anyway the Chinese and the Indians hate each other far more than either of them hate the West, but Americans seem to think that the world is obsessed with them.

The US Air Force could flatten Tehran in hours with conventional weaponry. No need for nukes at all.
