My opponent for this game came all the way from China. He actually came back for vacation and drove all the way up here from SoCal (Southern California) to visit a friend. Since he was here, I was happy to oblige him with a game.
As I had no idea what Mark (aka mray01 here on dakkadakka) was bringing, I decided not to bring my hardcore Maximum Threat Overload necrons nor my Wraithwing necrons just in case he was more of a casual player than a competitive one. Instead, I brought a more middle-tier necron list with a lot of new units that I had wanted to try out. Some of the new things I had wanted to experiment with:
- Nemesor Zandrehk and Vargaard Obyron
- Tomb Blades (proxied using my Raveners)
- The Flying Circus....that's teleporting Immortals with Veil Crypteks (and Obyron)
- Shooty Tesla Immortals
- Mindshackle Necron Lords
When I saw what Mark brought, I knew I was in for a very tough fight. He brought a Shrike Ravenguard Space Marines army with assault terminators! It was the kind of list that I used to play, very tough and very fast. And it was beautifully painted, so win or lose, it would be a pleasure to play against such a handsome army.

PRE-GAME ANALYSIS:
Necrons:
We both really didn't know what to expect in terms of each other's armies. I decided to bring a shooty necron build with some mobility in the form of 2 teleporting units (Obyron who has Veil and a Veil cryptek). I also was trying out a few units for the very first time, including the 2 HQ's, tomb blades, Veil of Darkness cryptek and necron lords. I think such a list would be fun but not too over-powering. Though this list isn't probably the most competitive necron list out there, I think it actually matches up well against Mark's Ravenguards. That is because I've got the volume-of-fire to take out his terminators, who are his main threats.
However, his ravenguards are very, very dangerous. Shrike gives the entire army fleet, meaning they will most likely be in assault range by Turn 2. Assault marines can actually assault on Turn 1 if he infiltrates them with Shrike. He's also got a lot of support fire with 2 squads of devastators, snipers galore and a drop-podding tact squad that should be able to hit my guys no matter where I deploy them. I think it will be a challenge to face his Ravenguards. If there's one thing my necrons don't like, that's a highly mobile army. Thanks to fleet, my opponent does have a highly mobile army which may be problematic to me if I can't get a good turn of shooting in.
Space Marines: (by Mark)
First, very happy to be up here and getting the opportunity to play against a great player. I know from past reports and dakka posts that Jy2 is a great player and that no matter what this game will be tough. I brought my Shrike list, which is balanced and tough, but still, they are just Marines, which i don't find to be strong Codex compared to Guard or Grey Knights.
When Jy2 mentioned he would bring his Necrons I was not sure what to expect at all. I played against the new codex Necrons once and all i knew about them was to stay away from those Gauss blasters on the immortals - they can generate so many hits and wounds that they can (especially 30 of them) whittle down my terminators, which are the main hammer of my army. Thus, my tactic would be to mitigate their effectiveness as much as possible. The other thing I know about playing against Necrons is they are relatively weak in close combat, which should give me a huge advantage as my army is pretty much "get in your face" (so long as he doesn't shoot the crap out of me with those Gauss Blasters). Which brings me to what i am thinking prior to the start of the game and missions, which is - get in his face quickly with support from my scouts and devastators. Again, I wasn't too familiar with his list, so I knew that I needed to be fluid and play smart - supporting my units with each other. Shrike and my assault unit will outflank as this is usually what i do with them - they can turn the tide and also be a mental distraction to my opponent.
Overall - looking forward to a great, fun and competitive game.

Ok, when you said RavenGuard I now know what you mean. Yeah his Ultramarines put us all to shame with his painting. His list is also a tried and tested one...he has won tournaments over here in the past with it. Gonna go with the Marines taking this one. I think lack of AP2/1 weapons on the Necrons part will give them huge problems when dealing with his TH/SS Terminators.
Mark if you are reading this looking forward to a game when you get back. I have been fine tuning my Necrons and am ready for something non-DE.

I don't have my codex with me, but are you saying that you can't mix "schools" within a royal court? That all crypteks in a royal court must be from the same "school"?
I was of the notion that you can mix harbingers in the same court. You just can't take unique wargears more than once. I only have 1 solar pulse and 1 veil of darkness.

I think what he's saying, jy, is that you have to have two Courts in order to have 2 Crypteks in one squad (since only one Court member may join any given squad). Since Obyron can't take a Court, your list is technically illegal (as you have two Court members in each squad of Immortals).
EDIT: The list is legal. The deployment is not (as a squad may only take one Cryptek or Lord from any given Court). So you would need a second Court to put a Lord/Cryptek in each Immortal squad. As Obyron cannot take a Court, the deployment is illegal.

No that's not what he is saying. You can only take 1 model per Court and put them into another unit. Therefore to get 2 models into your Immortals you would need 2 Courts.

I'm not so sure what you're saying. Each unit of Immortals has only 1 cryptek attached. You can attache 1 cryptek to each squad. It's only when you want to attache 2 crypteks must they be from 2 separate court.

Hi Just Dave, good to see you here again.
This list is just to try out new stuff. I already know how well my competitive Canoptek necrons can do. I need to broaden my necron "horizons". I think that there are a lot of fun stuff in the codex besides the Canoptek units and command barges and I'm going to experiment more with them.

The scouts (excluding telion) aren't really a worry, unless there's good dice rolling i find scout snipers do little. The drop pod will be down in turn one and the locator beacon means that the termies can come in right next to it and so be in your army's heart straight away. Be afraid. Or he might infiltrate a squad of termies with shrike...I'm afraid that the crons might get smashed here. Is the WBB rule still limited by certain weapons negating it (eg. power weapons)? If not you may be in the clear with some good rolling.

Pretty convenient that a necron list with only 2 decent anti-tank shots per turn ends up facing a list with only 1 mobile transport. I give this one to necrons with a list tailored to torrent down foot lists. Theres no way this would be a TAC list in a tournament setting.

That's what I normally do with my Ravenguards - infiltrate a unit of 10 TH/ SS with Shrike. Reanimation Protocols, that's what WBB is now called, is not negated by power weapons or Instant Death now. Thus, my immortals with resorb lord will always have a 4+ chance to come back. Thus, they are actually quite resilient to shooting. It's only in assault where they are vulnerable.
Dr. Temujin wrote:Oh yeah, Veil of Darkness is for Crypteks with Harbingers of Despair, not Destruction. I'm pretty sure you just forgot that or something, right? Otherwise, looking forward to the battle report.
Right. Although I didn't list it, I've actually factored in the cost of the Harbinger of Despair/Abyssal Staff into my Veil cryptek (or should I say, Veil-tek).

I actually designed this list without knowing what he would be bringing. So whether he brought MSU-mech or an all-foot list, I would've used the same army. It just happened that by coincidence, my opponent brought an all-foot list, which is why I mentioned in my Pre-game that I actually matched up well against his army.
You're right. This isn't a TAC list that I would bring to a tournament. It's got holes in it that makes it very vulnerable to certain armies (especially fast assaulty armies like my opponent's Ravenguards). I've never touted it as such. What it is is an experimental list to let me try out a lot of units that I think has potential to be pretty good. But don't expect the list to be a walk-in-the-park as well. It's got a lot of hidden synergies that I feel will give many opponents problems.
As for AT, don't be fooled by just the 2 lances. Wraiths, scarabs, spyders and even the tomb blades all have the ability to crack open vehicles. It may not be AT the likes of shooty MSU armies, but IMO it can handle medium mech armies.
Exalted Pariah wrote:All the telsa would glance them into useless metal-boxes though.

Unfortunately, you are thinking about gauss weaponry. Teslas don't have the glancing ability that gauss does, though I much prefer their 24" assault profile as well as their ability to generate extra hits. If I had a phaeron overlord, I would take gauss. Otherwise, I take teslas.
I think tomb blades are potentially a very good unit. I'm intrigued about them as well.
