So I would like to discuss one of my favorite shows/universes. Z is probably my favorite, never really liked GT very much, and the original is cool, but has bad animation sometimes due to it being over 20 years old.
What do you guys have to say about DBZ Kai's censorship? I personally think it is pretty stupid, and normal DBZ is much better. Kai does have really good remastered quality though.

I only watched Z, and was a pretty big fan of it. I even own the entire Frieza saga on DVD, and a couple of the out laying movies as well. But before or after, I didnt care at all.

Mesopotamia. The Kingdom Where we Secretly Reign.

I liked Z and GT quite a bit.

Vegeta is definitely my favorite character, and since he's such a major part of the story in the Buu saga that's my favorite story arc.

I pretty much agree with you about Kai. It looks great, but I miss some of the deleted content.

Kai is bad.
Z and GT were really.
Vegeta and Gohan are the best in my opinion. Goku was just stupidly overpowered.

Big fan of both, but not GT. Been watching DB+Z for as long as I can remember watching television, and devoutly watched the entire Cell and Buu sagas on their original air dates.

Bulma still makes my paints tighter, to this day

Aside from her though, Gohan is probably my favorite character because he went through freaking hell to get to where he was before getting eaten by Buu (which really pissed me off. We basically never saw what he was capable of, even though he obviously surpassed Goku in a lot of ways).

If you're a fan of the original dragon ball, give Dr.Slump a try. It's a fantastic manga if you like Toriyama's style of satire and storytelling.

It's a great universe that's hobbled by the fact that its writer sucks ass at writing interesting characters and has no damn clue how to draw unique fighting style for each character so he tends to ignore everyone but his favorites.

Basically, if Dragonball was written by someone other than Akira Toriyama, it'd have been much better. Alas.

When I was younger, I happily watched through darn near all of DBZ as it aired. I remember being really excited for every new episode. I think the first episode I ever saw was one of the many, many parts of Goku vs. the final form of Frieza during the Frieza Saga. From then on I was hooked, and watched it all the way through to around midway through the Majin Buu Saga.

Ahh, what a fun show that was.

I'm pretty sure that just about everyone between the ages of 6 and 16 between the years of 1995 and 2002 loved Dragonball Z

Part of the issue, at least for the US, is that we introduced, perceived, and approached Dragonball's franchise as an action series. In reality it is was written as an action comedy (and in the 80's when the standard of quality was lower). Least to say, I've never really enjoyed the Japanese brand of comedy.

Never saw Kai. I am a massive fan of Z, and same as you never really liked GT. To be fair I also think I never
gave it a fair shot since IMO doesn't relate enough to the last episodes of Z.
I have watched a few and gave up. But Z is amazing, every so now and then I start watching it again

It's one of those things that was really cool when you were a kid, and you have a lot of great nostalgic memories about it, but when you get all excited and actually watch it again, you realize that it's not nearly what you built it up to be.

It's a perfect example of why I never trust nostalgic memories.

Yea I started Z pretty much from the beginning, where Goku faught Piccolo. Then I finished the Buu saga, and that was the last time I watched anything pertaining to that cartoon. It was pretty fantastic though.

And they had their own fighting styles! Well, you just hit the proverbial nail on the head.

Yeah, Dragonball was pretty good and DBZ was good up until through the Cell Saga, but then it turned in complete garbage. I watched one episode of GT and didn't care much for it.

Dragonball was a lot better than DBZ, a lot of DBZ was lacking. I thought the story, animation, and characters were significantly better in Dragonball and it didn't feature the more goofy scifi elements that really hurt the show and turned it into a bit of a joke later on. Fething scouters and obsession over power levels...

I think the sci-fi elements were just fine, it's just taht the story became bland, monotonous, and boring.

I agree somewhat, also the fighting animation did actually get worse as the series progressed.

My favorite character is Trunks

I find it awkward looking back. The series invented a collection of cliches that by the end of the Freeza Saga, it just seemed to revel in using again and again and again.

EDIT: On the other hand, at least in Shonen manga, Dragonball is probably the most powerfully influencial series of the last 30 years. It is to Shonen manga what Macross and Gundam are to Mecha.

Meh, when people say Shonen manga is for kids, they mean it

I stopped paying attention to the genre at large ages ago (but then most Japanese media has a very imitative and repetitive problem). The only one I still follow is Naruto and that's just because its the only series that's managed to hold my interest.

Want DBZ 2.0? Check out Bleach. It takes Tito Kubo FOREVER to get anywhere

EDIT: And don't get me started on One Piece. Interesting work, but trying to read it is like trying to read while having a seizure.

I'm watching through it all again with my kids, which is fun.

They get as excited I used to, and the feeling is somewhat contagious.

Its alright, I went through a phase in my early twenties where I was in Japan for about 6 months and I mega got into it, read all the comics and stuff..

But then I came home and watched the cartoons?!

Whats with all the standing around?" Frieza sorta goes "Soon I will destory this stupid planet! haha!" and then the camera is on Gohan for twenty minutes going .. "oooh... aarrr.... uunnn....unnn... nggg...nggg..."

So.. I rather enjoyed the story, Vegeta was quality, but the TV show sucked.

The sci-fi elements in Dragonball were fine, but once they added in the whole galaxy traveling, power level, gravity levels, clones, and time traveling it got a bit excessive.

I actually watched some Kai for nostalgia's sake. I get that people don't like some of the stuff being deleted and edited for kids, but I thought the end result matched the pacing of the manga much better. The manga is fairly fast-paced. The original anime...well, there were practically entire episodes dedicated to powering up and grunting.

I think a better approach for the original series would have been to add more filler stories a la Garlic Jr. rather than stretch out every fight (and pre-fight power up).

He was one of my favorites as well. One of my all-time favorite moments in the series was when he showed up from the future and absolutely pimp-slapped the rebuilt Frieza. A villain that literally had an entire Saga centered around him, and someone who blew an entire planet to pieces...and Trunks beat him without even trying.

It's funny how nostalgia works. I remember watching every single DBZ episode as it aired as a kid because I loved the show, but going back, it's amazing how little goes on in each episode. I mean, there are so many times where it's just one character powering up for a solid couple of episodes at a time, or trying to reach point B from point A. Just looking at the episode titles for Dragonball Z, episode 22 has "Goku Where Are You" in the title. Episode 28's title is "Goku's Arrival." All I'm saying is, it took like 6 episodes of fighting for the hero to show his face.

I lost interest during the Cell saga, but finished it up. I was done when they did the Buu series. By then it felt like i was watching the show just to torment myself with their crappy writing. Early on it was a lot of fun though.

Watched DBZ on tv when I was younger, loved it, hated the filler ( I mean honestly how many eps is Goku running down that snake road??!!) But on the bright side it did spawn one of the best meme's of all time... =o]

That episode just shows how crazy they got with their power levels. In that one, over 9k is like LOLWTFUTROLLIN high. Where as in the Frieza saga they got over a millionish right? Good grief
