Hello!
I was wondering if it is just me that get really annoyed when armies are shown in WD, codexes or on the GW website, and their bases don't match the board!!
It really gets on my nerves!!
Am I alone on this topic?
E.G.
Grassy dark grit on a desert!!
desertish bases on a cityscape board
Orangey-red board with deserty bases
The SW battleforce one is alright, but it's a different shade...
And more...
I know that you can't get it perfect, but a company like GW might put a bit more effort into it...
Just my thoughts

Know what you mean! Hate it also. I reckon that each figure when they go to war takes along their own decorated rubber mat. They don't want to get their feet dirty, do they? My personal bugbear is grass on 40k bases. I mean they are meant to be fighting all over the galaxy, so what are the chances that there is such a thing as green grass? Not to mention the drybrushed gravel...

Yeah, because a base is meant to be a chunk taken out from the terrain they are standing on.

This seems like a pretty nitpicky thing to be hung up on...
They have studio armies that they use for photos. They have studio terrain they take pictures of them next to. Stands to reason the bases won't always match the battlefield. Are you suggesting they magnetize every figure's feet so they can rebase them based on the picture they need to take?

Well then you soul should be dead.
I HATE the look of flocked bases, they never match the board and throws the whole aesthetic off.
That is why I do not use anything on my bases, they are always black.
I was thinking of painting two yellow lines on them to simulate a road though. That is the only finish I would even think about putting on my bases.

So, do you only play on black mats then? A black base looks out of place on everything, while a based model at least has a chance to match up with the terrain - even if the dirt is slightly off, and the grass slightly off, a grassy based model will look decent on most grassy tables. So I guess you're being consistent in having your models look out of place all the time, at least.

Does not bother me. The base does not really matter all that much, heck having the mini painted does not matter to me. I plan to use sand on my bases as I have a desert themed IG units.

Yeah, I used to be in the "black bases are the only way to go" until I got confirmation that some stores will ask you not to play if your models aren't flocked. I wound up capitulating to peer pressure on that one. I've never really been too twitchy about the bases not matching the board, but what kind of irks me is the current "in vogue" style of basing. (Dry brushed faux desert gravel with chunks of static grass.) Everyone else seems to dig it, so I guess it looks good and I'm just the odd man out, but it just looks so manicured. I just go with grass flock. Minimal effort, and that way no one will throw me out of a games store for not finishing my model.

So I guess you're being consistent in having your models look out of place all the time, at least. No, we play on all types of boards, but mostly city fights. (But if I were to base them they would look out of place on every game board because flocked bases are only for models in a Diorama, not for game pieces.) The black base never looks out of place, as the black bases are hardly noticeable, because of the minis that are fully painted. Jimsolo wrote:Yeah, I used to be in the "black bases are the only way to go" until I got confirmation that some stores will ask you not to play if your models aren't flocked...
That is why I contemplated making the base look like an Asphault road with two solid yellow lines running down the middle of them (Basically I have been contemplating painting two yellow lines down the base to make it look like a street.) but even that would detract from the painting of the model.

I take a lot of pleasure in planning, building, and painting my bases.
My IG have cityfight bases with lots of fun wrecked gubbins and my GKs are rocking the lava world motif.
Sure they look a little strange on an ice world or grass, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone comment (before now) on the issue.
To each their own, but to me a black base just looks unfinished.

i like well done bases also, i don't think they have to match the board...i think they should tie the army together. give it a unanimous feel.
i have used sad rich in iron (so it's orange red) i just scoop it on smash the excess off nd paint the rim black with a little bleed over to the sand and it looks like the earth is on fire everywhere i walk, i like it, makes my army look solid together, and thats all i care about.
snowy boards....bring them on baby, i'll melt the ice nd walk on fire

Yeah I'm kind of confused here too. I've heard of not allowing you to play without painted models, but without flocked bases sounds kind of silly/elitist to me. Some people just don't like basing their minis, and prefer the black look. I know I do. I may paint them white to look like they're on snow or something, but anything past that would be out of the question.
Main reason being is I bought some used guardsmen that were based and they've been driving me crazy. The guy used a mixture of sand and glue, and it's slowly been falling off in my case for weeks. I'm tempted to scrape it all off and be done with it, but I figure give it a couple more weeks and the job will do itself And as much as I'm sure some people will go "There's ways of basing it without the stuff falling off"', sorry, but I'm way too clumsy and handle my models way too much for any kind of flock to last. It'd be way more trouble than its worth and just end up making them look bad.
And honestly, if someone tells me "hey, you can't play here without flocked bases" I would probably just go "ok, I'll go to a store that will then."
