I'd love to try clear bases, actually. Heck, if you could shape them properly, they could potentially appear to "project" the surface of the table to the top of the base, so the army would always match its gaming surface.
Actually, it'd also be cool if the outer edge of the base could be ringed by a colour, sort of like what happens in RTS games when you select a unit. And you could use colours or patterns to help differentiate units.
Maybe for a future army.

man thats looks pretty cool, i can totally see coloring the edge blue or red or something, i recon it would look bonkers from a standing perspective looking down on the table top.
any chance you can outfit a small unit with clear bases nd take a pov tabletop playing pic?

Base my models?! Yeah, i'll do that when i finish painting them all. And with my turtle-paced painting and fast burnout rate, i don't think anything will get based. I'd just feel sort of rediculous gluing bits of grass to my painted model's bases while I looked at all my grey plastic guys who still need painting. I'd have to stop immediatly and use the time to paint them, which would mean about 3 would get done, or only one if it's a complex model.

I don't mind as long as they go to the effort of cleaning them up when they are done if they decide not to. Still not as much effort as a model that is actually based, but a decent improvement to the grey hordes that usually plague most stores. However if it really irks you build a table and base to match it, or pay attention and base according to the most popular table type you play on. In a way the base can give context to the model.

A miniature without a proper base isn't finished.
That's my personal opinion of course.
The bases match MY terrain on MY gaming table. That's all that counts. I'm not worried if my bases do not match every other gaming board.
Bases also enable me to use exciting poses on my miniatures, which aren't possible on a plain base.

I own a Realm of Battle board, which I've essentially sprayed to look like some sort of frozen wasteland. My models are typically based in a haphazard manner, but never with snowy bases so they don't match my RoB.
Regardless, since I have converted and painted my Eldar Corsair in two squads I tried different techniques to paint each squad. One squad was sprayed white and then based and meticulously highlighted, the other was sprayed black, based and drybrushed.
I still haven't based them beyond attaching the odd Space Marine helmet, rubble or plastic shavings. One squad has a white base the other a black base. I find this quite nice, although I think models in general look unfinished regardless of painting quality when they aren't based properly. Even the flat brown/green of my fantasy models are better.
For flocking... that is a double-edged sword. The store owner earlier in the thread was a bit harsh. Fine, you may want to sell the whole hobby and have people play with partially finished models isn't really selling the hobby, but flock will drop off. Stones are easier to seal both with extra layer watered PVA and with varnish (Citadel Purity Seal, getitgetit?).

Whats wrong with the old school green bases?
However, i rather have a based mini that does not match than one with a black base.
Atleast my one will match something
Also, never seen those clear bases before.
Who makes them please?
And are they available in 25mm, 40mm and 60mm?
Im lazy with my bases though, so expect this and nothing more

WarMill make a range of clear and etched bases (you can even get custom etched designs if you are willing to wait (as they are quite busy now from what I understand ). I don't know if they sell completely plain bases, but I am sure they will if you just email them. My custom etched bases (they are clearer but these ones have not been washed to get the cutting residue out):

Sorry but all three of those are a pretty good match. Grey/Khaki goes with most tables.
Do you only ever game on one table?
I do have a problem with the Blood Angels' bases though - the death company don't appear to match the others and it's essential that bases are consistent through the army.

My bases are pretty simple but I like to imagine that due to the colour of them (crushed cork on top with the rim painted calthan brown) that they do actually fit most tables, in city fight i'm pretty certain that there would be craters and strikes that blow deep into the ground and scatter earth everywhere hence they fit with that, and snow boards, I can simply imagine they have walked through mud and slush caused from melting snow because not 'every' part of the world would be white...right? then of course a jungle theme would certainly have it's share of bogs swamps and dirt while a mars or alien board would still work due to the colour coherency on the bases.
this is just my take on the matter of course, it doesn't really bother me, it's usually the models I'm looking at not the bases and as long as they're finished in some manner i'm happy, but i can see your point about it, some people just scratch their heads and say "why is that snow based wolf doing in the jungle fighting guard?" it does look odd in some cases.

I just paint mine black. It's unobtrusive and blends with almost everything. One of these days I'll go over my army and do them all up nice. And make a display board. One of these days...
Hmm, or I could just base them with a faux wood laminate so they match the bookshelves they spend so much time on!
A nice base can really make a mini "pop", and if you are painting to a pro standard is required. But for table-top use I don't care. It is a little jarring to see different terrain on the base then the board, but no so much that I care about it.
