I'll freely admit that I'm a b-level player playng a b-list force: Tyranids. I lose about 75% of the time, and it doesn't bother me. 40K has been fun. I get to field awesome monsters, charge with massive swarms, and eat characters.
Lately, however, the fun factor has been on the decline. I faced Grey Knights for the first time yesterday, and I fail to see the fun of getting a quarter of my force annihilated turn one. Not, I might add the third of my force that is useless because it cannot possibly damage a rhino. I conceded at the end of turn one.
My other game was against Dark Elder. Tabled on turn 4, but at I felt I had some shred of hope of hurting his force. Against the Grey Knights, I didn't feel I had any. Both brought entirely mech forces, and Tyranids have very few ways to deal with them.
Yes, I will have to take more mech-attacking lists, but it feels like with the current metagame of mech mech and more mech, my Tyranids have less and less relevance on the field, and I am forced into making a pretty specific list; Hive Guard, tyrannofex and Genestealers.
The game balance has really gone off. I'm having less fun.

So is this about the general feeling concerning 40k or is it a specific feeling about Grey Knights?
Both feelings are equally valid, and determining which it is can be helpful.
In all cases, go do something else for a month or three and come back and see if the arrival of 6th edition might change something.

It seems that grey Knights are indicative of the current metagame; arrive in tanks, shoot massive amounts of s8 from tanks.

Oh, I have no doubt about that, in fact I'm just waiting to get the first read of 6th edition 40K before I completely give up on 40k/ WHFB and sell my beloved 4th edition Dark Elves and 3rd edition IG...

Amusingly enough, GK don't have S8 that hangs out IN tanks, do they?
You're thinking of the dreadnoughts.
Really, the problem isn't with GK, it is with C: Tyranids.
I would really suggest taking a break for a while or playing against softer opponents/lists. There's also the alternative of upping your list/game and working around the 'current metagame'.

It's the bugs. I am hoping that 6th edition will bring changes to make them more fun. As it is most games are just a beatdown from some newer, shinier codex that nids really can't compete with. I wasn't having fun with my nids either so I shelved them and worked on my eldar. Now I play footdar and I enjoy them quite a bit more. Which is kinda of sad since the Nid codex was actually updated 2 years ago and the eldar book is 6 years old.

If you haven't already done so, I'd highly recommend investing in a second game. Try your hand at the numerous new games that have spread like wildfire across Dakka, like WarmaHordes, Infinity, and Brushfire, to name a few.
I own several spaceship fleets on top of my IG 40k army, and whenever I feel my interest in 40k slipping away, I can always go back to playing and painting spaceships. This is probably a good time to expand your gaming horizons if you haven't already done so.

Good advice here. Try playing an off-the-wall list to shake things up. You might also want to take a short break. I've done it before and it really helps. Maybe just spend the next month or two painting and then give gaming another go. Anyone can get burnt out from time to time.

I admit that I have had the same frustration. After a local tourny playing GK 2 rounds in a row and getting tabled fast it makes me want to pack my crap and sell it off. I am hoping that 6th brings the fun back and some semblence of balance so more than one army is competitive.

Hi,
Some of us in our group started playing 2nd edition a few months ago, and are enjoying every minute of it. Much more humour in the game, more memorable moments, everyone seems to have fun even when things are going badly. Plus there are no more rulebooks to buy!

2nd edition was great IMO.
@ OP It's the 'nids. The codex can't beat an egg in most cases. I've had my 'nids packed up after 2 months of the newest codex release.

Find some new people to play with that are interested in things like scenario play and story-based campains. This can be a refreshing and entertaining alternative to the grind of "sportshammer".

I would also suggest changing up the game types. Missions in 5E are horrid. KP is broke and so are objectives.
Get creative and make a more interesting game.
Overall I feel 5E is one od the more sterile version of the game so far. Alot of players like it that way but for me I only play 40k once in a while and focus on WHFB. It is more balanced over most of the codexes and the rules have a bit more randomess to it meaning some facets of the play is more interesting as you do not know if your assault will actually hit the mark etc...

You actually have a lot of ways to handle it.
- Sell Tyranids, buy Grey Knights.
- Make a point of not playing vs Grey Knights, maybe your opponent will drop them. Stick it to the Matt.
- Wait for 6th edition, for at least couple of months there will be no automatic army builds and everyone will cry and whine how 6th ed nerfed their army, that will be your moment to sneak in with some cunning strategy.

I had the same problem with the armies I collect; They are too outdated and I always get owned. So I got the idea of creating narrative battles or do something enjoyable. E.g. When I was playing the IG with my Dark Angel SM's I was getting owned (I hate the outflanking rule) so I made it that my Company Commander charged into combat against a combined Infantry Squad on his own. I made the point with my friend who was playing with me that my Company Commander saw a traitorous seed in the leader of the squad, so personally went to slay it. I play with risky moves that I find very funny. Have fun with them by doing something that you don't normally do. WHFB is fun and balanced if you want a game where every team has the advantage, just wait if you are going to collect dwarves, 'caus I heard their going to update them in 3-6 months.

I used to love playing my Nids and was so excited when they got their new codex.....
I stopped playing them shortly after. All the Bio-morph that made them really interesting to build a list out of were gone or severely pruned back.
Their on the display shelf till they get a new codex. I got 6 Carnifexs and they got mauled by the nerf bat
I painted and converted them up to a good standard and didn't want to buy half a new army of new model when I put so much work into the others.
So sad cause there an awesome army and I got a lot of love for the Nids.
Not so much for their Codex

When I get sick of playing 40k, I play something else for a while.
I've always had another game on the side alongside 40k (even when 40k WAS that OTHER game).
My current pairing is Infinity and WHFB. I got sick of 5th ed 40k and am sitting out the game until maybe 7th ed. Time to let my elfs have a run, and I get all of my SF fix from infinity (those that live by the sword will be shot by those who don't).
Just because I'm not playing 40k anymore doesn't mean I'm going to sell my stuff, either. There's other rulesets I can use them with (like Tomorrow's War).

10 Psycannons (24") on 5 Man INfantry
5 Assault Cannons (24") on RB
6 TL-AC (48") on Dreads
So basically:
12 S8 Shots at 48" vs 3 Targets
40 S7 shots at 24 or 20 S7 Shots at 30"
20 S6, rending Shots at 30"
So you have 14 potential targets, if your army is disembarked.

For the OP, you named the two armies that are probably the hardest match up for Nids. Don't get dismayed; change your list. Try new stuff. Find something that works for you.
Also, try swapping armies sometime with a GK player. You play GK, and he plays Nids. You'd be amazed how eyeopening it is to play against your army with the one you're trying to beat.
