So what is a one in a million moment that happened to you? It can be good or bad.
Mine was this
Sternguard just got blown up from their transport with one dead in the explosion. With a pain engine(full wounds) and a parasite engine ready to smush them.
They make a cover save from one of the attack from the parasite engine.
My turn. the parasite engine dies from my vindicator. But the Talos is still kicking. It has charging range next turn. So i rabid fire my hellfire bolts into it. 3 wound. he needed to make atleast 1 save. he didnt. Talos goes down.
So what are some really fun moments that makes this game worthwhile?

Excellent Exalted Champion of Chaos

Grim Forgotten Nihilist Forest.

Once with my dearly departed Space Wolves. The game was in it's death throes. The daemon player was left with a single Daemon Prince mortally wounded. The Daemon and my dreadnought had been fighting. All what was left were five grey hunters that sat on an objective. They would be obliterated if the dreadnought failed. Well the Daemon rolled pen and caused it to explode. It wounded and killed the Daemon Prince.

Happy days!

I've sold so many armies. :(

20 0rks charge with slugga choppa on a Waaagh! turn. All get into CC. All roll full attacks. All dice miss. ALL OF THEM!!! We are talking like 60 to 80 dice and I needed 4+. Not a single dice over a 3. The unit got wiped out, but I still drew the game thanks to Ghazkull. Of all the things in 40K I will miss, Ghazkull and my converted Warboss "Bootz" will be missed the most.

The Orks are the pinnacle of creation. For them, the great struggle is won. They have evolved a society which knows no stress or angst. Who are we to judge them? We Eldar who have failed, or the Humans, on the road to ruin in their turn? And why? Because we sought answers to questions that an Ork wouldn't even bother to ask! We see a culture that is strong and despise it as crude.

Table set up: ruins along the right-side edge of the table, an apartment block along the far side of the left, with one ruin before it, and some more apartment block on my left edge. small ruins in the middle of the board. 1000 point game, UM vs UM.

A tactical squad of marines split. One squad ran forward, while the other split to the right table edge. Both groups advance on a shelled out ruin. The sargeant is advancing up the left side on the ruin, wielding a combi-plasma and the second man has a flamer. The squad on the right bears the missile launcher. As they trundle up to the building, the missile launcher hunkers down at the outside wall while the sargeant takes his squad into the building through a crushed wall. Out of nowhere, at the far side of the building, a squad of TH-SS terminators smash through led by a terminator librarian. Terminator librarian thrusts out his hand to fork lightning at my squads, but succeeds in blasting himself.

I return fire. One plasma shot cuts down a terminator, the flamers barely scorches the terminators. The krak missile bowls another terminator over, and that's when the bolters open up... only the sargeant ant the librarian remain standing. The librarian gets might angry, activates a psychic power, and succeeds in killing himself and the remaining sargeant.

I proceed to secure the building.

In the same game I drop a squad of LOTD. They proceed to become a bolt-magnet, but only lose one man each turn. They however wipe a tactical squad each turn in return.

I was playing Nork Dedork (however you spell that), the body guard ogryn, along with Straken, three plasma gunners, and a medic. Well, the demon prince charged, and took out a few. Then, during my turn, stuck in assault with said demon prince. Everyone went down, and when Nork died, he gave the prince 6 strength 6 hits, and he went down. What made it realy funny, is that the other player already rolled for his movement after combat, thinking it would all survive. Then, a bunch of 1s and 2s for saves. Epic moment. That will never happen again.

I had some of the worst luck I've ever seen in 40k while playing Imperial Guard in a recent 2500/person doubles game (each person had a 2000 pt FOC, and 500 points of Apocalypse, Spearhead, or extra codex stuff that could violate FOC). I had two moments that made me want to bang my head on a Baneblade.

Round 1, a Stompa drops a S10 ordnance weapon on my Baneblade. He penetrates, rolls a 6 for Chain Reaction, and then rolls a 5 for structure damaged. There's 2/3 structure points, in one of the first shots of the game. Immediately thereafter, he hits it with a Zzap Gun from his battlewagon, rolls high on the strength, penetrates, and rolls a 5, taking out the 3rd structure point, and blowing up a 500 point tank before it even had a chance to move. I guess the chances of that happening aren't exactly astronomical, but it was made worse by the fact that it happened because they'd stolen the initiative, and it just seemed to be a perfect storm of horrible luck.

Towards the end of the game, I got behind the Stompa with an outflanking Valkyrie, carrying a Veteran squad with Meltaguns. By this point, the Stompa was all but destroyed (3/4 Structure Points were gone), most of its weapons were destroyed or out of ammo, and it was moving at half speed due to a Drive Damaged result. However, it was worth 500 VPs, and there was a squad of Nobs in the belly; if I could blast them out, I could drop my last Storm Eagle Rocket on them and send them to Ork hell. I fired 3 Twin-Linked Lascannons and 3 Meltaguns at the AV12 rear, hoping to wreck it. All 6 shots missed. I rerolled the Twin-Linked Lascannons... and they all missed, again. 9 dice in a row, not a single one rolled higher than 3. Quick math tells me that's a 1/512 chance. The nobs inside never really got to do anything (the game ended not long after), but without those ~800 VPs, we lost by a mile.

I was playing a for shiggles game with a couple of friends, using a kan wall. me modified spear head and used 3 corners for deployment. the "angry marine" (CA blood angels) player drops a furioso on my right side, while the other ork player drove his bikes toward my left. failed every save i had for the walkers, and the dread by the furioso goes boom. i have nowhere to run my boyz that they can escape the BA dread, so i move them arround so that i can at least get the nob into CC. he gets 1 wound with his attacks, than rolls a 1 for the extra. my nob wrecks it.

top 3:

One:
I was playing IG vs SM. Lascannon blows up a rhino, all the marines survive. Demolisher fires in a shell, killing all 10 as they were in a nice bunch. Same turn Marbo throws a det pack again killing 10 marines, and a squad of storm troopers killed enough marines to force them to fall back, hitting the table edge and taking them out.

Two:
IG vs GK. He had 3 psyriflemen dreads. Turn 2 Marbo and both my stormtrooper squads drop in behind them, no scatter. Marbo's detpacks hits dead on, blows it up. Meltas in the squads take out the other 2 dreads. Ending up losing in the end (bad tactics), but it was amazing to see all 3 come in at once and do exactly what they needed to do. Opened up the board for me to move tanks around. Sadly I focused on termies when I should have ignored them.

Three:
IG/Orks vs IG/SM. First turn my friend runs a trukk up. They open up trying to pop it (nobs and warboss). Everything misses. Hydra, medusa, plasma guns, you name it. Set us up for an easy win after they nobs multiassaulted all the tanks and took them out.

A non-GW one then?

While playing the second 7TV scenario (Satellite Down, where both sides are scrambling to retrieve a crashed satellite) I decided as the forces of good to use two cars, while my opponent fielded a large force of mooks. One of said mooks found the satellite and tried to scurry off, only for me to send both cars after him in an attempt to stop him from winning the game. In rather ungentlemanly fashion I tried running the little git over numerous times, only for that little gak to dodge each time, making it to the boards edge in one piece! If only I disembarked and shot him..

I was playing in a doubles tournament when I decided to pop open a rhino with my Daemon Prince in order for my Blood Angel ally to assault the occupants.

I fired a Bolt of Change. Hits... Penetrates... Explodes!

Needed a 6 to wound my Daemon Prince. He got a 6.

Ok... No biggie, 3+ armor save.

Rolled a 1.

Turns out it was its last wound.

On the last turn, I was huddled in a corner, but leading by kill points. Then a land raider full of TH termies rams my predators side armor. On the way to the primary target, he tank shock my own librarian led termie squad as well as another squad behind them (both having just one person in the path of the LR). The results went like this:
-Leadership for both squads: failed.
-Have 10 inches of board to spare: flee 12 inches for the front squad, 11 inches for the back squad. Both destroyed.
-predator gets a penetrating hit: explodes 5 inches
- explosion hits a sniper scout squad on the other side of the predator: all get a wound (there were 4 left in the squad)
- all scouts fail and die.

End results: Instead of leading by 2, I was down by 3. His assault termies didn't even bother to get out after that.

It was horrible to witness (funny as hell for everyone watching), but also one of the silliest things that happened to me during a game.

I roll well with my Tyranids and tend to never actually get into unlucky situations!

I bought a small block of Chessex Dice to go with my Deathwing. Horrible.... horrible things happened. Terrible evil things. Scars of the mind. Anyone that played me over at showcase around Feb/Jan knows what happened. Went 0-4.

- Squad of 4 Bikes Turbo through Dangerous terrain and all die

- Belial's Command Squad apparently didn't know what Feel No Pain rolls are and managed to barely make any of them. Few situations of "Stormbolters caused five wounds, roll 4 ones, roll zero FNP rolls. Horrible things.

- Got tabled in two turns by a fairly balanced GK army. Stormbolters did scary things to me

- 70$ spent on 6x Cyclone Bitz. I killed a Vendetta and a Chimera throughout the entire tournament. Frag did more

- Multimelta off an Attack Bike kills a Dreadnought. Dreadnought explodes and kills Belial and the Attack Bike

- Lone Belial vs Lone GK Librarian. I fail the difficult terrain move to charge. He stormbolter'd my last wound. Such is Life

- Meltabombs on a Bike Sarge killed a dreadnought in combat. Dreadnought killed Bike Sarge in explosion. Terrible things

Overall, a great event!! - The dice just hated me and the 3/4 GK players did not help.

Bloodthirsty Bloodletter

Greatest one was a game on Tuesday: Necrons vs Grey Knights, Capture and Control.
First turn a Stormraven moves flat out right in front of my lines, the entirety of my shooting does nothing. I begin to suspect this will end badly.

Second turn the Raven unleashes all weapons on one of my warrior squads guarding my home objective while 10 Purifiers and Librarian dismount ready to assault.
A single warrior (of 10) survives the salvo and stands his ground. Only 3 others reanimate. The Purifiers and Libby assault my C'tan nearby yet despite Hammerhand and Might of Titan going off cause all of 1 wound. C'tan squashes 1 Purifier in return.
My turn I send in my Overlord and Lychguard as a counter assault. He succedes in killing the C'tan but the explosion kills 4 Purifiers and wounds the Libby.
The Lychguard smash the rest of the squad and the Librarian falls back. I consolodate to keep him running and hope to start a comeback.

From this point things get interesting. Draigo and 4 Paladins arrive close to my lines via deep strike. More ineffective shooting follows and Im on the back foot again.
Though 1 Paladin falls and the Raven is immobilised. The Lychguard move back to keep out of charge range.

And then this happens...
Draigo's unit assaults the battered warriors guarding my objective. The combined attacks of Draigo and 2 other Paladins results in..

3 warriors down. Lone survivor does nothing.

On to the Daemon hammer...

2 Hits...

The warrior stands his ground! Lychguard make a second bold counter attack.
A Paladin falls and the other 2 are wounded though the warrior dies. The Necrons win combat.

He rolls for his morale check..

An 11!!

The Lord and Lychguard escort the fleeing Paladins away to the other half of the table and my second warrior squad, which spent the entire game so far hiding in ruins, make a dash to secure my objective. End result was a draw despite me spending most of game trying not to get tabled. Still can't quite believe I got away with that.

Back in 4th I managed I was using my guard against a marine player, it was some chapter but i cant rememeber now. First turn I lobbed a basilisk shell over half the board onto a rhino filled with a kitted out command squad and special character. I pen, roll a 6 on the damage table and the whole lot died in one go. I think I killed about 600 points with that shot...in a 1000 point game. I think my opponent folded after that. XD

Another good one still in 4th and still with my guard was when a friend of my brother challenged me with his chaos. He set up his new daemon prince in the middle of the board and started gloating about how it was going to own me. So I set up a demolisher right in front of it. I got first turn, rolled forwards and fired. Demolisher cannon shot lands right in the princes face...and he failed his invun. Boosh, down on turn one. I smirked quietly to myself as he raged.

Final guard story. Apocolypse game. A lone guard sergeant, having somehow managed to pass his leadership, charges an enemy baneblade with a melta bomb. He hits, pens and scores a 6! Roll again, another 6! I was in hysterics at this point, my opponent wasn't. I roll a third time but only get a 4, shame. Still it was impressive.

Ok some of these are mine some a buddies...I'll try to denote which belong to him.

First one my friend is playing marines vs the old crons. The monolith is getting rather close to his lines and has been missing w/ LC all day at it. Well one turn before its in range he shoots at it again. Rolls a 6 to hit, 6 to penetrate, 6 to explode, and of course a 6 for the radius. The resulting explosion killed enough warriors to cause a phase out. Just to make sure I grabbed that dice and rolled it getting a 2...dumb luck I guess.

Now one of mine. I have IG vs wolves. So I have a 10 man squad hunkered in a crater after their Chimera was on the wrong end of a longfangs ML. Well some normal termis had DS near them and procceded to unload on them. I go to ground and pass every save. Next turn I order them back up and shoot at the termis...no damage. He shoots at me again on his turn, to which I go back to ground and take no wounds. He then charges through the crater at them and makes it. It is at this point the guardsmen must have read the right litany or something because they procceed to cause 4 wounds, 3 of which he rolls ones on. With his return swings the Sgt and the assault cannon (all that was left) do nothing. I mean he needed 3s and either 3s or 2s and not a single wound out of 6 attacks. Then they decided to book it out of there. My guardsmen decided to persue (don't ask why) and caught them. He rolls for fearless and picks up two more 1s. 10 guardsmen should never beat 5 terminators in CC after being shot twice!

Number 2 for me had to be some IG veterans taking a charge from some Khornate aspiring champ termis w/ LC. Well much to my surprise I dropped all but one of them. PW sgt for the win yo. And the sgt lived. Of course I still lost and the sgt tried to run. He gets away but my CCS is out of range to rally him and he's gone next turn. Instead of just pulling him he levels his laspistol at the termi and pops him one right between the mutated eyes. One las pistol...one dead terminator.

#3 was a Revenant...now I know they are strong and all that yadda yadda. Well in a 4K per side game it is alongside my DE against a buddy playing orks. He's bragging that his Super Heavy has never gone down let alone turn one. Well just to test this out I drop 2 of the strength D templates on it and the other 2 scatter onto the supporting BW full of nobs. When the smoke cleared the BW were both toast along with all but 1 wounded nob, the super heavy was blown up (as in a 6 on the catastrophic damage table) and all but the big mek and ghazzy inside lived. He conceded right then and there.

Ahh...good times...good times.

I'll toss in a Fantasy Battles one.

My horde of white lions smashes a horde of plague monks, breaks them, and overruns. I knew that I'd be exposed to a small unit of giant rats, but I thought to myself, "They are just rats."

Next turn, the rats charge into my flank. Three white lions manage to do only one wound. The rats do one wound in return. I fail my stubborn roll despite being withing my general's radius, break, and watch as my 600+ point unit (there was a mage in there too) is destroyed by a unit that costs like fifty points.

The skaven player reminds me about that every time we see each other.

The eye of terror

My chaos lord of khorne with daemon weapon on a bike gets shot at by a mob of 30 ork boyz with sluggas and choppas.
They all fail to wound, and are just out of assault range.
On my turn, I use a squad of CSM's to shoot them, and kills about half the unit.
My lord fired his twin bolters, taking another two down, leaving twelve.

Lord charges.
Rolls for daemon weapon.
Twelve attacks total.
Ten hits.
Eight wounds.
Eight failed ork saves.
The four orks attack back, causing no wounds.
The orks fail morale, and are caught and killed in a sweeping advance!

The next turn, my lord is assaulted by a killa kan, but kills that too!

EDIT: Catch the enemy by suprise, and you're khorne lord is no longer useless
EDIT 2: Actually, the kan was immobilised, but died in the same turn anyways, thanks to my daemon prince

Me and my friend were using the castle wall pieces, I had 5 AOBR terminators guarding the right flank as he outflanks 12 wolves and his HQ (he plays SW) after first round of assault he has 10 wolves and his HQ and i have one powerfist marine left. 2nd round his wolves dished out 11 wounds on that one guy. So I picked up the die, I know they were 2+ armor saves but I should, statistically, fail at least two, I gave the dice a good shake and made all 11 of those saves

The Golden Throne

I once immobilized all three of my Ruses going over terrain. Rolled three ones. Lost the whole squadron!

This crazy thing was this was deep in the game and I was being greedy. I didn't have to move them to win, losing them forced a draw!

I've had two very recently. One for minis gaming, one for general RPG-ing.

For minis, specifically 40k. I had the following happen in one turn with my Sisters:

2 rhinos with dozer blades got immobilized on terrain (1, then 1 twice)

My twin linked Dominion squad managed to miss all 3 melta shots with twin linked.

My exorcist rolled double 1s to hit with its shot (rolled 2 shots).

And to cap it off, a deep strike mishap had Celestine and her girls put into dangerous terrain, where I lost 4 out of 11.

And for general RPGing, in this case Shadowrun from last night. A quick note on Shadowrun's rules for those unfamiliar, everything is based on d6 rolls. 5-6 are "hits" and 1s are "glitches". If you roll more glitches than hits, it is just a small fumble, but if you roll only glitches and no hits, it is a massive, critical fumble. If this happens, a character can spend a point of Edge (a stat that is pretty much used for big, important rolls) to re-roll it.

Now that you are briefed, here is the situation:

My character wants to use his gymnastics skill to vault over a desk and attack a bad guy taking cover behind it. All told, I roll 8 dice for gymnastics tests, and a vault like that requires 2 hits at most. So a pretty reasonable roll, right?

Roll 1: 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 4

Erk. Well, no worries, I can use a point of Edge and...

Re-roll: 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 4
