Alright, sick of all these gloom and doom naysayer threads on the ally thing. So lets have an upbeat one! Post the coolest/badass/fluffiest/makes most sense/obscure fluff reference ally list you can think of.

It can be a concept, a rough outline, or even a specific list all the way down to upgrades. We'll go off the assumption that for an allied army, you must buy one HQ, one troop, and can buy one optional slot for every other slot (HS, Elites, Fast attack) Also, no combination is forbidden, as we don't officially know who can ally with who yet. You want to ally IG and Tyranids? Go for it. Think the Chaos codexes could have a cool fluff army working alongside a corrupted inquisitor force from the grey knights codex? Sounds cool man.

No whining over how OP a list could be/is. We've got plenty of those threads going already This is just for fun so let's have a good time.

Now on to me, I've got a few ideas on a combination of orks and Imperial guard.

Idea 1: A proper Big Mek ork army
Probably would along the lines of a battlewagon bash type list. Would be using IG as a way to bring proper looted russes, either vanilla or demolishers. The Leman Russes would back up the battlewagons, as well as provide good armor saturation (ALL FEAR MY AV14 ) meanwhile, I'd take a guard platoon and either a CCS, Primaris Pysker, or even a Lord Commissar. The guardsmen would be modelled as grots that are there to help the mek working on vehicles. May even make a "warboss" with a commissar hat to represent the lord commissar. Could be an awesome fluffy/competitive army.

Idea 2: Proper Ork air force Pretty self explanatory, dakkajets escorting a couple of vendettas squadroned. Would be backed up with stormtroopers, storm boys, commandoz, etc. More of a fun army, but would be pretty awesome I think.

Idea 3: An inquisitor/ Rogue trader IG force with blood axe mercs Pretty simple, a rogue trader who hired some orks as some extra muscle. Might take a warboss and a nob squad as troops (on bikes or off, not sure) to act as either counterassault, bodyguards for my big tanks, put em on bikes to go distract the enemy, or even just give them a battlewagon, and run them foward with a couple of demolishers as a linebreaker. Lots of ways I could go with this.

Personally, I would love to ally my Necrons with Dark Eldar. Necrons hate Craftworld Eldar, I don't see why they wouldn't work with Dark Eldar. Not to mention both DE and Necrons are 40k's wildcard races. They can basically appear any place at any time to start a fight.

Considering that the Dark Eldar are terrified of Slaanesh, I can't think of a worse pairing, except maybe Craftworld Eldar and Slaaneshi Marines.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I know!

Grey Knights and CSM. That would work so well! Or Tyranids and Necron! Or Blood Angels and Dark Eldar! Or Eldar and DEldar!

In all nonWard seriousness... I'd like to see Sisters doing some teaming. And Deathwatch being an ally force of one single elite team.

Also, more of the assassins being Imperial and not just exclusive to Grey Knights.

The Necron should not team up with anyone, ever. I don't care if they're people now, just no. When will the Tyranids start meeting the Deathwatch for tea and crumpets, I wonder? @.@

Since I came of age and started building my armies with my own money, my fluff has been (in a nutshell) that my Marine chapter had seceeded from the Imperium and has allied with my Craftworld, both factions working together to survive and thrive.

So now I'll be able to represent that on the table top. Which should be cool in the occasional friendly game.

Coming in Fall 2013! DE 6th edition! NOW WITH 3 TIMES THE COCAAAAAAAIIIIIIIINNNNEEEEEE! Watch the Dark eldar ally with their most acient foe, who turned out to be their best comrade in disguise, SLAANESH!

Codex Writer Matt Ward had this to say: "Well, I looked at dark eldar and said to myself 'this is a decent start, but they need more latex, drugs, and sexy bits...' And that's when it hit me! Slaanesh would be a perfect addition to the dark eldar! I just made him their patron god they worshipped and boom! Problem solved!"

If this happens I will weep for all dark eldar players. forgive me but i just had to type that

If it were allowed Chaos Space Marines/Traitors and Dark Eldar. Sounds a little weird, but I'm saying this in the context of the Dark Eldar being used to represent the crazy flesh creations and mutants that Chaos forces create. I'd like to be able to field the giant mutants, sewn up dogs with human faces and hordes of mutant flesh things that Dan Abnett's always on about, and with the added bonus of being able to represent alien mercenaries too (not using Dark Eldar models for these either of course though). Otherwise, again from a Chaos prospective again Guard and Marines would be a neat thing. I don't know how the rules are going to be layed out, but being allowed to feature guard as cultists, traitor soldiers, local citizenry, or whatever human lackeys Chaos has would be alright. Having a Guard force with only a few marines in it would fit in with the fluff well (Marines, even loyalists, rarely commit large numbers of marines to anything but the most pivotal of battles), thus the marines could be say the overlords of the traitor forces, be providing an elite side to the rabble, etc. ....Yes, I may be sitting here right now building up my original Traitor Kill Team into a small detachment for use with my marines....but that has absolutely no bearing on my glee for the allies rules.... XD

Allies for the Imperial forces may be somewhat fluffy, but I think that they're a bit to segregated to allow for different branches to frequently cooperate, different Guard regiments in the field yes, Marines and Guard would be a rare occurence)

I think it would be rather cinematic to see an imperial guard army on the table fighting the beginning of the engagement and then have SM come on to reinforce them. Representing the marines arriving as a small force to aid in the thickest part of the battle.

Some combinations I'd like to see, all involving the Imperial Guard...

- Ultramarines + IG as Ultramar PDF.
- Iron Hands + IG as AdMech
- Chaos IG + Daemons.
- Rogue IG (separatists? mercs? pirates?) + Orks.
- Word Bearers + IG cultists (whiteshields)
- Alpha Legion + IG Meltavets on Valks/Stormtroopers/Scout Sentinels.
- Sororitas + IG as ecclesiarchal militia.
