Since GW says, change the rules as you and your opponent would like to do, and since Tyranids do not have Allies, if your gaming group uses alot of Allies, would you let a Tyranid player use them? If so why, if not, why not?

Curious as to what people think.

If we were to use that logic, we can extend it to any rule in the rulebook.

That seems difficult. How would you keep it from scratching you when you pick it up?

Fluffwise, sure, but gameplay wise?

You're in for a world of hurt.

As far as we know for 6th edition, Tyranids are the joke army.

You could glue it to a broom stick?

OT - I wouldn't want Tyranids having allies either, I just can't imagine it making sense and I like my games to at least pretend to have some sort of narrative. If someone could make up a story like they were manipulated with cybernetic implants or...actually...that would probably do it...dang...

I thought they were the Joke army for 5th.

I was reading some fluff people putting out. Some Ork Scientist or was it a Herder or what not, captured a few Tyranids and tried to domesticate them. I think that would be a fun army to play against or with. I believe I read someone elses fluff for the same exact reason but using another army besides Orks. Would be nice to use, espically if 6th edition is suppose to be Cinematic.

The humans did it in starcraft, they can do it again here. Just have a Primaris Psyker pretend to be the hive mind.

1: Genestealer Cult. Duh.

2: Tyranid Mind-Slaves have existed since 2nd Edition, at the very least. A grub that infects and controls the host. Imperial Guard would be perfect for this.

Yes, from their own codex.

That does mean fun like the possibility of 12 Carnifexes, though they are still just a Carnifex... So bad example there I suppose...

Genestealer cult would suck if it was fluffy. A few squads of Genestealers and a couple of platoons spamming conscripts. Also, the closest thing to mind slaves are creatures that are controlled by cortex leeches, which "forces them to become a dribbling puppet under the sway of the Hive Mind." Dribbling puppets aren't really effective allies.

Honestly an effective genestealer cult would have to be built from the ground up to be a good and fluffy army list, something like what Forgeworld does to portray the Elysian Drop Troopers (although TBH you could make a pretty good drop troop regiment representation using the regular IG codex). I think someone on TG said it best "If the Tyranids were a good army they wouldn't care that they don't get allies, they would say 'LOL of course we don't get allies. Are you slowed?'"

Should the Tyranids get some kind of boost to compensate for the lack of allies? Yes. Should they have an army shoehorned into allies for them simply for the sake of balance? No. Besides, if all you care about is winning you should have ditched Tyranids when they got their gak codex from Cruddance.

In friendly games I would let just about anything go for the sake of fun or experiment.

I don't write the rules. My ego just lives and dies by them one model at a time.

The fluff based justification for Chaos Daemons to be included as allies in anything but a guard or CSM army can be used to the same effect for Tyranids. In a friendly i'd let Tyranids ally with guard, orks daemons and maybe others at the very least as desperate allies.

This is of course assumes the Tyranids are getting nothing to compensate for other army alliances. If they at the very least can ally with themselves then maybe not.

No.

Im pretty sure the reason Nids aren't getting allies is because they are the one army that won't need them.

Judging by what we know so far, this is certainly not the case.

I'd be cool with it, for most of the ally possibilities.

It would, at least, not be another GK army across the field from me...again...

I think the allies rules might shake things up interestingly, even if i CAN see the possibility for some very cheesy TFG'ing with some of the combos..

The Viletide: Daemons of Nurgle/Deathguard: 7400 pts
Disclples of the Dragon - Ad Mech - about 2000 pts
GSC - about 2000 Pts
Rhulic Mercs - um...many...
Circle Oroboros - 300 Pts or so
Menoth - 300+ pts

Fluffwise - no one, absolutely no one, wants to be on a planet when it's under a full Tyranid invasion. Tyranids don't care who or what you are. They won't communicate with you. They'll kill you, eat you, and recycle you as soon as you're in reach. Desperate allies? You wouldn't even be able to fight alongside them using them as unwitting allies to gain an objective, because fluffwise, you're surrounded by untold billions of other Tyranids. There is no fighting alongside them. They don't land on a planet and fight in little sorties like everyone else.

So no, fluffwise, there is no justification for allying with them. Chaos Daemons make bargains with anyone as long as it gets them worship, Tyranids don't. Ever. At all. Attempts to control them have been poor at best (lol Anphelion).

lazarian wrote:The humans did it in starcraft, they can do it again here. Just have a Primaris Psyker pretend to be the hive mind.

The only psycker who has been able to do anything at all regarding the hive mine has been Tigerius, and that's simply vaguely read it (and all he learned was 'they're hungry'). Use a Primaris Psyker as the Hive Mind? I thought we were arguing fluff based ways here. No, that won't work. The Primaris Psyker would, at best, go insane and die. At worst, shower his fellows with brain tissue.

I rather they didn't. With rumours of larger FOC and far enhanced MC rules, as well as Gargantuans in reg games, Nids might actually be viable, even Nidzilla. Which is good because I run Nid Reserves/Nidzilla hybrid list. Swarmlord, Hive Tyrant with all the goodies, Lictor, Trygon, Mawloc and Carny.

This is exactly how all friendly games should be played imho.

Friendly games should be exactly that. I don't agree wit people that refuse friendly and relaxed players the chance to play with whatever army they wish, after all you can learn a lot from playing against even the most overpowered armies.

First edition, and vanished from the fluff fairly soon afterwards I'm afraid.

I even had a Gretchin Mindslave. He was "Mindy the Mindslave". He died a lot.
