What I'm curious about is what is the best thing your standard troops have ever done, for example, in my first proper 6th edition battle today my guardsman sergeant challenged Imhotek and won! (in Imhotek's defense he was down to one wound, but still) anyone else have any heroic stories of their basic troops? Or just any ridiculous tales where your men have won out against terrible, terrible odds?

Random dude with a grenade launcher. Squad gets charged by a rampaging tank. Guardsmen stands his ground, throws a krak grenade into the front armor. The vehicle grinds to a halt immediately in front of him.

The guardsman spits on the front of the tank, turns around, and wonders where all of his squadmates went.

I had a biker sergeant back in fifth survive CC against a Vanilla SM captain with Lighning claw. The Captain whiffed everything and I was able to get one hit through with a powerfist.

Another one my Guardsman Sergeant with a laspistol killed a Terminator Chaplain that had survived 3 rounds of HWS trying to lascannon him to death. He passed about 6 invuls before finally succumbing to a laspistol.

Tournament last week:

Squad of Drop Troop Melta-Veterans Grav-chute inserted from their Valkyrie, landed right on area terrain. Every single one of them passed their dangerous terrain test, and they proceeded to kill the 5 remaining marines and Sicarius in the ensuing shooting phase, effectively seizing the objective and gaining me a Victory-Point for Killing his most expensive unit.

I was quite proud.

Friend of mine who isn't on dakka has a pretty cool story, so i'll say this for him, after a whole turn of shooting at my vulture gunship, it was a slugga boyz's pistol that took it down, rolling the six for shooting at a flyer, and then a six to get the glancing hit.

During a Killteam match, I had 1 slugga boy that killed not only a terminator, but also a Terminator Sgt all by himself. So I modeled that slugga boy with a terminator shoulder pad on him. Even though I run all shoota boyz, I still use that boy as a shoota boy, just cause hes such a pure bread badass

Well my basic troops are 40 Hormagaunts... shining moments though? (All in 5th)
Vs. Space Wolves, he had two thundercav squads come around a building. I put 20 into each and wiped both for no losses.

Vs. Dark Eldar, I wrapped and glanced to death a raider with a squad and HQ inside, getting me three kill Points.

Vs. Blood Angels, I assaulted an immobilised Land Raider and successfully wrapped it, locking a Priest/libby/chaplain/terminator Deathstar inside for the whole game.

vs. Tyranids, they went on a poisonous rampage and killed every Monsterous Creature he had, one by one.

Vs. Ig, had a lone Hormagaunt assault and break two seperate squads, and sweep both in successive turns.

I split my Emperor's Champion off a Crusader squad and ran him towards 2 kroot sitting on an objective. The crusader squad ran to another objective and controlled it.

At this point, I was contesting his, and I was winning 2-1 and this would be the final turn. I charged the two kroot figuring that at best, I'd kill them and still win 2-1; at worst, we'd stay locked in combat and I'd win 2-1. Well, I missed all of my to-hits and/or to-wounds, including rerolls with the old Accept Any Challenge vow, then he landed 2 wounds on me, then I rolled two 1's for my armor saves.

Dead Emperor's Champion, the two kroot consolidate on the objective, controlling it, we tie 2-2.

Stupid freaking Kroot! Plus, I didn't need to charge to win the game...

my IG eviscerater priest + 6 guardsmen jumped off of a platform into CC with Tau fire warriors. (probably isn't allowed in rules, but hey it was cool)

Seeing a squad of veterens swoop in in a Vendetta, secure the area, deliver that math assignment, and extract within 2 minutes would be freaking sweet.

My vehicles, whether chimeras or tanks. I have killed so many enemies from tank shocking (and them deciding to do death or glory) and vehicles by ramming that I have started keeping track for each vehicle. One of my chimeras has killed more MCs than I will bother to list, but includes Greater Daemons, Daemon Princes, some Tyranids, and I am fairly certain there is some Avatar of Khaine gumming up the tracks.

In 5th, I was playing a game against Tau.

I chose to run an Ork Trukk rush.

2 Objectives, opposite ends of the map.

Late game, I've manage to get 3 meganobs on one (had this one since turn 1), and 2 onto the other (just then). Everything else has died, except for a Shokk Attack Gun and some Grots.

Tau starts moving to take the point with 2 Meganobs, but shoots the other one as well. 1 dies, they fail morale and run off the board.

Tau friend has his HQ and a Devilfish loaded with Fire Warriors on the point by my 2 Meganobs. I move in to contest it with the 2 Meganobs and charge his HQ.

The HQ dies, but so does 1 Meganob. I'm left with 1 on the point, with a Hammerhead, Devilfish, and a squad of Fire Warriors (still in the fish) in proximity.

The Hammerhead fires through a forest. The Meganob shrugs it off.

The Devilfish shoots everything at it. The Meganob shrugs it off.

My turn (last of the game), I have the meganob assault the devilfish (just for fun), it explodes and several Tau died, but not the Meganob.

The Fire Warriors could still contest, but the game ended. The Tau player was not happy with just contesting, but he's a good sport.

I also had a Deffkopta come in (first 1500 point game as Orks) on turn 2, and blow up the same Tau player's Hammerhead before it could do anything. That Deffkopta continued to sow destruction and was the star of the game.

I have a few from 5th.

One is a friends storry but hes not on dakka (yet) so here goes. A ig sergeant with 2 squadmates and no special wargear gets assaulted by 7 wraithguard and a wraithlord with a wraithsword with a warlock nearby. First round sees the extra 2 guardsmen get killed. The sarge prceeds to kill two writhguard. Then the eldar fail to wound him the next round and he kills another wraithguard. He proceeds to survive for the next 4 rounds of combat killing no more wraithguard and then dying. We extended the game for the 5 rounds after the first just to see how long he would last but he technically survived to the end of the game. Needless to say that model got a conversion.

Now this one is my own story, a squad of 12 ork boys in a trukk, turn one their trukk blows up. They stand in the crater and go to ground. They proceed to get shot at by half of the grey knight army I was playing against. Over 50 shots later 1 boy and one nob left 1 nob left leadership check time, failed, the nob hits the boy with a bosspole, that boy passes his 6+ armor save 50-80 shots later, and the boy dies and nob runs away. Poor ending but still really epic. The boy that passed his armor save was my best converted ork boy prooving that the better a model looks the more amazing they perform.

The last one was my 45 point ork trukk (dedicated transpor for troop) tank shokking a 250 something point dreadknight who tries a death or glory and fails to glance or pen. The dreadnight dies and I stand staring in amazement. Best moment ever.

I did this with a squad of 20+ Termagants in 3rd. Except I didn't use a tactical marine; I used an Eldar Guardian Defender. The last surviving guy (and support weapon crew member) of a squad.

------------------

Tonight I had three surviving asssault marines from a five man razorback assault squad Overwatch a full squad of 5 meganobs and a Big Mek who were charging them to kill them off an objective. The meltagunner hit the 6 to land the Overwatch, wounded the Big Mek in the front, the Mek rolled a 1 to fail his Look Out Sir, then failed his cover save, and him dying caused the meganobs to fail the charge. Perfection.

--------------------

One of my favorites was at Adepticon a few years ago, in the Team Tournament, playing against the Wrecking Crew, who were running Nob Bikers back when they were still super nasty.

My teammate and I were running Chaos Space Marines and really scrabbling through, fighting and scratching for each point and maneuver we could eke out. IIRC the primary mission was quadrants, held by scoring units. At the end of the game I had a unit of 5 or 6 summoned lesser daemons (my pretty old metal Juan Diaz Daemonettes) in a corner, and our opponents sent a wounded biker warboss roaring after them. He had to go through a wood to get to them, and he ate a second wound doing so. Then he shot the daemonettes with his TL-big shootas, killing a couple. Then he just BARELY made the assault, and started charging up the power klaw. I only had a few models left, he throws something like seven S10 WS 5 attacks, and my girlies just have a 5+ invulnerable, and any dead girls will be more Fearless wounds/saves from No Retreat, so we're probably looking at a wiped unit. But that's at I1. At I4, my surviving girls threw their attacks, managed a 6 to wound, and he failed his save. Dead biker boss gets et by pretty Daemonettes, and victory went to the Cold Steel Mercs.

Two words: Jimmy Ass%^&*^&. Had a squad of three Acolytes with Meltaguns and their pet Jokaero in a Chimera. Chimera gets blown up, and all but one Acolyte are shot down. Wyches charge the last one, he survives, kills one, breaks them, and runs them down. In my turn he runs at an objective. Opponent shoots 3 Venoms at him and he survives, then he runs up, OHKO'ed a Humunculus and takes the objective, surviving the game despite more turns of Venom fire.

Top of T6, A lone GK in power armor, that saw all his brothers gunned down by mass Sisters bolter fire, spent the last 2 turns hoofing it back in an objective lost in previous turns of shooting. Bottom of T6, barely holding the objective a surviving squad of sisters shoots a TL plasma and a TL melta at him. Shoots missed, re-rolled, shoots missed. The game ends with a triumphant "Combat me bro!!" The day is won for the GKs

SoB: Witch Hunters Codex. A trio of Leman Russ executioners reduce the squad to just two members armed with meltas and more or less at the edge of its range. The two march towards the tanks taking a couple of shots at their maximum range which fail to do anything. They get hammered again but just shrug it off thanks to praying.

They walk up next to the tanks and execute them point blank. Both dying in the explosion of the third tank.

Then there was the time a lone superior fired her boltgun into the front of a trukk speeding towards her, stopping it dead.

DoC: Daemonettes are more my standard troops, but they haven't really done anything as cool as the SoB from memory. Just the normal stuff like slapping some tanks to death and such...

My personal secret lair

In 5th a lone wych of mine ripped apart two squads of IG veterans and a Lord Comissar and survived the whole game.

In 5th a single tactical marine held an objective for 4 turns and winning me the game. He was shot at with just about everything. Vendettas, lasguns, russes etc. He was also charged by a veteran squad but he won the combat.

My first game of 6th my scout squad was shot to pieces in turn 2... except for one scout with a heavy bolter. He didn't miss a single shot during the whole game killing several necron warriors, scarab swarms and wounding a Necron Lord but got killed by the Lord after that (in turn 5).

Yesterday an infantry squad of mine that had been reduced to 4 men decided to try and kill the Necron Destroyer Lord. The target was 14" away so the sergeant couldn't fire and the three lasgun guardsmen got one shot each. All three shots hit, all wound, the Necron player throws three ones. The Lord goes down and when the time for the everliving throw comes... it fails. Lasguns are dangerous. Another infantry squad killed a squad of 6 wraiths with FRFSRF earlier in the game.

I shall rule the world someday utilizing my cuteness. And I already have one minion to help me do it!
