Subject: Space Hulk or "Yet another reason to hate GW with a Passion"

The first time I was introduced to a GW game was at a Half-Price Books when I was 10. I can't remember the book exactly but I had to have it because the big guys in white armor were so cool looking and they were fighting these ugly bug creatures. Later I found out the big guys in white armor were Terminators and the bug guys were Tyranids. I do remember that one of the Tyranid units were human soldiers who had a parasite attached to the back of their heads controlling them.
Then I found a Space Hulk book at the same Half-Priced Books and got it. I couldn't afford the games then since my family was poor, but I could dream about being one of the Terminators taking down Genestealer scum on a derelict space vessel...or at least dream about playing the game. As a poor kid, you do a lot of dreaming.
Now, several years later, GW released another edition of Space Hulk and just when I had the dough to buy it, they quit producing it just about as fast as they could. Now I see them on the net for outrageous prices and it's aggravating to a fare thee well.
I still want a copy of Space Hulk (the newer edition would be nice) so I can play it. Moreover, I'd like to get a Chaos Terminator Squad to change things up a bit (at least visually). Are there any out there I can get my mitts on still?

Ebay and lots of cash is your best bet
but every edition is sought after
You can get it cheaper if you go for a set minus the models (many gamers will have removed them to use in 40K) if you've other figures to proxy them with

There are several alternatives out there if you don't want to get stung by the ebay sharks.
Going on the 'humans vs. aliens in space' theme:
(Alot Cheaper) - Project Pandora, by Mantic: http://www.manticgames.com/Shop-Home/Project-Pandora/Product/Project-Pandora-Grim-Cargo.html
Sedition Wars (this one has made a real buzz), about to go on general sale. http://www.seditionwars.com/
Also, the Gears of War boardgame has been winning a fair number of awards and was very well received http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=167
But yes, it is appalling that such a good game isn't on general release permanently. But then you could say the same thing about pretty much all of the specialist games and older board games that were released. The problem is of course, you shouldn't be able to have fun that cheaply..

IMO Pandora is a poor replacement for Space Hulk though it is the most "similar".
Sedition was is hardly like space hulk.
Gears of wars bears very little to no resemblance to space hulk save that they both have tiles and minis.
I'd you want space hulk you can usually find th tile and rules on eBay for a decent price. Then just use your own terminators and nids.

=/. Its aggravating to see images on the internet of the models from that kit that are ruined by bad paint jobs and conversions. The box has been out of production so long that you're only option would probably be ebay (and had such a limited run that charity shops aren't really an option like with the previous editions).
0.o On that note, Space Crusade is sought after? I managed to buy a half dozen boxes of it over the course of a few months. I only stopped buying them when I realized how common they were on the second hand market... (...and still manage to see them unsold next to scrable boards every now and then).

My advice is spend the money you would spend on that on a set of Bug Hunt corridors up on kickstarter right now. You will spend less or the same on a set of corridors + models and rules and your game will look 1000% better

Thanks much guys! Pacific and Foster came up with the best answers but I'm looking at the Bug Hunt Corridors and they are fantastic. I guess I'll get two Termie squads (one Chaos, one Loyal) and the Corridors to start out. As for rules, where might I find some? Preferably .pdf if that's at all possible. If not, then I'll just see if the rulebook itself is available.

Ditto that.
In fact, you don't even need official Terminator and Genestealer models. There's any number of SF models you could get cheaply such as Halo Clix Spartans and Horror Clix Aliens.
The thing is, what companies are there selling Space Corridors?

No, it's really not.
Companies move on. There are plenty of non-GW games I'd love to have copies of. It's either bite the bullet and pay the price or find something else.

Space Hulk was never a reason to hate GW. It was one of the only universally things to come out of GW in a while. Great models, quality product and soemthing the fanbase actually wanted.
It is more evidence that GW is actually scared of money though IMO. Change the models a little to keep the old one Ltd edition and put it out at £70. They'd sell truckloads.
Edited to kill the dreaded double post.

Every time I read anything about Space Hulk I get sad. My brother bought 2 of the new edition and was holding one for me, then before I had the money for him he sold the second to pay a bill.
Now I occasionally look at the prices on ebay and weep.

OP, your best bet is just to spend the ebay price, or track down the 1998 (?) edition on ebay.

You can get the tiles on ebay for about $30. Same is true of all the parts.

Dreadfleet a disaster by GWs standards but i also picked up a copy from a discount retailer and enjoyed it a lot. I loved the narrative in it and thought it was a high quality product that had a lot of care put into it.
It was DEFINITELY overpriced however and that, and a lack of promotion and competent marketing by GW put a lot of people off.
And i love using the Seascape for Dystopian Wars

We rarely play games that are much more than the starter box with one or two more ships so thus far have got away with it (given my mates Covenant a few hammerings)
As far as worth the insane Ebay Prices? Probably not. Up to £100 would be my limit. But as people have said you can get a box sans models for reasonable price and then you could use DV termies and some cheap stealers to fill most of the gaps. The game is a lot of fun but its a real shame GW won't supplement or support it like they did in the old days.

Such a shame...I was really hoping for it to be the 2nd coming of Man O' War when it was first announced, not a one-shot. That would be like GW producing a single box game of Battlefleet Gothic with only 2 factions and a third of the ships...insta-fail.

This is what I have done. I lost all my Space Hulk 2nd Edition in a flood early 2011. I wanted Space Hulk 3rd Edition, but $400??!?!! No way!!!! I did some investigating and research and found that I could make my own home-brew version and end up with a *better* Space Hulk game!
First big hurdle: Obtaining rulebook and mission book.
Stuff has started arriving this week and I imagine it will take me a few months to get it all painted, I'm making 2 squads (Dark Angels & Imperial Fists) complete with Librarians & Captains (the only models I've had to buy at *full* price)!
I plan to document the journey and list all stuff I obtained. I'll update with a link once I've got around to getting it up. (I'm also *refreshing* an old HeroQuest game I have as well.)
I cannot wait to play!

As much as I hate to say it,Space Hulk is pretty much the best game that GW ever put out.
easy, takes a few minutes to learn, then adds on from there and you can add on almost indefiantly to it.
To anyone whos interested, there are numerous sites for free tiles.
You only need about 5 terminators to start with and about ten to fifteen Stealers. If that.
The rules are available for free. It only takes minimal of finding them.
If you want to get down to brass tacks, you can Make your own tiles/ boards.
Styrofoam boards, foamcore boards, card stock. 2-3", depending on the size of figure bases you are using, and a base map of a few corridors and some rooms.
Blip counters can be blank bases with cardstock, ( also avaialble on line).
Egg timer might be your most expensive purchase, and if you want to, you can use your watch.
