Subject: Return to the Underhive- a Necromunda project

Hails to all that read this. I've been wanting to get back into Necromunda since I got back into wargaming in 2009 but never had anyone that would play w/ me. That has finally changed (ktbb22 tried a game and likes it) so I've been doing a lot of work on my Necromunda models. I enjoy sharing my current interests on Dakka and this one is going to be a lot of fun since there's crossover between this and my Terrain Project thread. I offer up Necromunda terrain there now and then, but I'm guessing I'll be doing a lot more Underhive stuff for a while since I have someone to play with and if I'm lucky I might get some other people on board once things get moving.
My history with Necromunda is a long one. I was a League Arbitrator for almost 2 years and it was my game of choice whenever I had the opportunity. The place I lived at the time had an amazing wargame community and I had a tight group of friends that liked playing Necromunda (almost) as much as I did. The longest continuous session we played was at least 30 hours long, and I remember we stopped when one of my friends fell asleep in mid-game while sitting on a bar stool. Ha.
I used to be able to quote page and paragraph for most rules, but that atrophied since my last game in '99. I've been re-reading my rule books and it's slowly coming back. man I have missed this so much. It's like hanging out with an old friend you haven't seen in years.
Over the next few weeks I'll be offering up pics of old miniatures I used to game with, 'new' miniatures as they are being painted, terrain as it is being built, batreps w/ photos, etc.
First thing I'd like to share is a HUGE score I made on eBay recently. Awesome part of this is that it has a lot of Eschers, which ktbb22 is playing. I'm really happy w/ this haul. Check this out:
Here's a pic of the entire haul.
The rest of the pics are of individual parts of the haul. First up is House Escher:
House Van Saar:
House Cawdor:
House Orlock:
House Delaque:
Pyromancer. Scum, and Pit Slave:
Ratshin and pre-Ratskin Chief from Confrontation:
Adeptus Arbites:
Forgot this Redemptionists name:
Misc backpacks / loose weapons. Sprue on LEFT is Eldar and sprue on the RIGHT (thanks GiraffeX is unknown source. Both work well for these miniatures.
So there's the start. I'll keep up with this as I can, hopefully once a week or so. Thanks for looking.

Fantastic. I'd really recommend using the Community Edition rules (can be found on Yakromunda, along with the fantastic gang roster manager).

Great haul I've been after the Pyromancer for ages. Necromunda was never as big a deal for our group as Mordheim was but it's still a great game. The range also includes some of my all time favourite models.

It is an oath we honour. @ Bruticus- I joined Yakromunda today. Will check it out and get a feel for the community before posting, but I am reading it now. I'll likely stick w/ the original rules for now since those are what I have the most experience w/ and once ktbb22 becomes more familiar w/ things I'll look at addendum / house rules / etc.
@ GiraffeX- Thank you for your words of support. And thanks for the catch. I was going to make a joke about Imperial vs. Metric left and right, but it sounded really lame so I let it go. And dude you are not old and lame. You are a seasoned veteran with an abundance of experience.
@ Llamahead- The Pyromancer was a buried jewel in the lot. I didn't even notice him until I opened the package. There are a lot of Necromunda miniatures that I don't have, but that list got shorter the day this haul arrived.
@ JohnnyHell- Welcome to my part of the Underhive! I'll be updating this as I can. Nothing 'new' has started yet, I'm still digging though the ruins of my collection, though I expect a lot of new stuff will be coming soon.
@ Dreadclaw69- Consider yourself colored.
@ Hyenajoe- Yes, that was one score. I'd tell you how much I paid for it, but you would be ill to know that such a treasure went for such a disgustingly low price. If the seller had sold these off individually they would have commanded a MUCH higher price. I am so psyched right now.
@ Vik- I'm not a hoarder. I'm an enthusiastic collector.
Yup. That's what I'm going to use as a divider for this thread.
Wow. Thanks for the responses and interest! I'll be updating this thread as I can. So far nothing new to report, but I do have some cool stuff to share. Here's a glimpse of my past accomplishments and future endeavors. This (minus a few models that somehow eluded the camera) is my collection of Necromunda miniatures. A few have been included from the latest haul, but vast majority are from the 90's. If you've played for any amount of time you'll see a lot of miniatures here that you recognize.
First up are my first love in Necromunda- Cawdors. I played more games w/ this gang than all the following gangs combined. I am still going through my old stuff so I haven't found their gang sheet yet but they were mighty. I'm tempted to start them back up again, though under a new gang and fresh stats.
...and here's the rest of the collection. Two are from then haul I showed the other day. Didn't mean to do that, but this is an accurate display of all the Cawdor I have.
Next up is a close cousin to Cawdor- the Redemption. You'll notice a few Cawdor models in here (becasue they are so closely modeled and becasue I collected a lot of Cawdor), and you'll see some slight conversions. I didn't like the original conehead models because the headgear seemed impractical for an environment where they would find themselves crawling through air vents and sludge pipes. Some of the most crushing defeats I ever suffered in Necromunda were while playing this gang, and I was totally ok with that. First pic is what I have ready to play, 2nd is of the entire collection.
Next is my 2nd most played gang- Scavvies. I like to play the fringe of extremes when I game. Not sure why that is. I guess I'm just more inclined to play the 'bad guys', good or bad. I had a lot of fun playing these guys. Partly because of the distinct challenge of the limitations they have, but also because of the absolute ruthlessness they suffered and dealt in return. I had them eat a fellow Ganger on more than one occasion. Ha. If I need more models, I can grab any of the dozens of Cultists I painted up (on my 40K Cultists thread).
This next Goliath gang was a lot of fun to play. The concept was a bit ridiculous and completely unbalanaced, which is why I liked them so much. They saw a lot of play and were my #1 gang for a while. I didn't put a lot of work into them paint-wise, I managed the '3 color' rule and spent more time playing them instead of painting them. Some are pretty decent, but most are slapped together.
Anyway, this is Blaster's Blasters. As a Juve Blaster had an obsession with shotguns, and when he graduated to Ganger he finally got to pick up his weapon of choice for the first time. Blaster made a name for himself over the years and more and more Goliaths sought him out. He decided to start a gang of his own, but the only weapon he would allow was a shotgun. Eventually he allowed a Heavy Bolter and Heavy Stubber as they were sort of like shotguns (huge caliber round) and were as loud as shotguns, they just shot a lot further. Blaster didn't win every encounter, and more than once he bottled without firing a shot. But in the end he was happy.
...and the rest of my Goliath collection:
"What about the Orlocks" you may be wondering? Well, it turns out they had a higher purpose than staying in the Underhive. Every original plastic Orlock model I own has been used as a Cultists (Chaos or Genstealer) and many have undergone conversions that make them barely recognizable. I never played an Orlock gang after my first few 'straight out of the box' games.
These Pit Slaves were the last gang I was working on before I stopped playing. I *really* enjoyed the conversions on this one. I was able to bring "useless" models (2nd Ed Space Marine Servitors) out from my collection and onto the table and play a gang that no one else was running. Even if I don't wind up playing them again I'd still like to finish painting this gang simply because it is just so cool. Far and beyond any comparison this gang has the most conversions of any other and has some humor to it as well (check the name and then look at the weapon... bonus to anyone that gets the rest of the joke). I really wish I had the opportunity to have played them more before things shut down, but there will be more opportunities ahead.
Those were the gangs I ran. The rest are incidentals I used during short campaigns or special scenarios.
These were my 'counts as' Arbites for a few scenario games I ran. They were from a different system called Warzone, and honestly I thought that game was a lot better than W40K. I wish it had taken off, but we all know the end of that story.
These are the only Ratskins I finished painting. I used them as Hired Guns sometimes, but never finished them as a gang. I never even had enough to make a gang with. That has changed now, but I'm not likely to run them.
Spyers. Ugh. That's all I need to say there.
Wyrds. I only played a Beastmaster. Other than that I was never much of a fan of hocus-pocus wobbly stuff, I prefer guns and flamers and grenades. But the models are still really cool.
Painted Beasties:
... and the rest of the collection.
These are all of my Scum / Hired Guns / Bounty Hunters. They have all seen action at some point.
These models were used in a scenario to represent Guilders.
... and here's a glimpse of my retirement fund.
Ok, that's it. I'm tired. For you gray beards out there I hope you enjoyed my tripdown memory lane, and hopefully the young bloods enjoyed seeing another example of what once was. More coming soon, probably some time middle to late next week. IRL is still riding my back but it's manageable and I'll make sure to get my Dakka time in as I can.
Thanks for looking. I'll be back!

That last shot of unopened blisters was a true jaw dropping moment... I'm now itching to dig through my Munda collection and see what I have - I know I have my Cawdors and Catachan gang - think I've got some delaques somewhere plus the original plastic Goliath and Orlocks still on sprues. I've been tempted lately to buy the Heresy Miniatures gang - similar style to Delaques - might pick some up at Salute'13 in April.
But you're collection makes me weep with both jealousy and joy, especially al those blisters - what I want to know is what's in them?

@ Ruglud- That last photo of unopened blisters is a benchmark of my obsession, but in this case it's also karma for a job well done. All of those (and more, some have been opened / used) were a gift from the owner of my FLGS back in '99. I spent my entire weekend helping him w/ annual inventory (like 10 hr days) and once we were done he gave me his entire pile of 'write' merch. You'd be physically ill if I told you exactly how much old stuff he gave me, but I will say it took 2 trips to the car to carry out. I'll list the contents of the Necromunda blisters when I have a chance.
@ Brushfire- I signed up the other day. Still feeling things out and reading up before I start posting.
@ grrrfranky- Next up is terrain, and a lot of it. I'll have pics tonight when I get home. I won't be sharing the WIP for the Necromunda terrain here, I already have a Terrain thread and I think doubling up would be cheesy and annoying since a lot of people that are / will be reading this thread already are following that thread as well. But I'll at least share the beginning of the project here and post completed work (w/ obligatory 'action shots'
@ monkeytroll- Thanks all around. I have been fortunate to have amassed the collection I have, and I'm happy that a large portion of it has seen paint and even more have seen the tabletop.
@ Joe- Yes it is, I know you do, no they shouldn't be, yes it will be, and you should be. That's what you get for living 5600k away fro me.
Ok. Not a 'real' update, but awesome nonetheless. My first post I showed a score on eBay that really boosted my gang collection. Well, I've done it again. This time Ratskins and Spyrers. These are the pics from the auction, they haven't arrived to me yet.
I only duplicated 4 miniatures (2 Ratkins, 2 Malcadon). Depending on how things go etc I might start offering some dupe miniatures as trade bait for other things I want. Members of the LoER move to the front of the line. But not yet. I have some things to figure out.
That's it for now. Sometime soon I want to start putting paint on new models (or at very least upgrade the paint / bases on models I've already started).

Thats an impressive collection. Most of my Necromunda models were acquired or traded for second hand. They seem to be appearing as Daemonhunters henchmen http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/279068.page However the urge to play Grey Kngihts has never been particularly strong painting the Necromunda models is fun.

Another of your threads I have never seen, I think I need to check your profile for threads created. You are a distracted madman, much like myself.
Thanks to FINALLY starting to play this game again (which is still my favorite GW game ever, even above my beloved Blood Bowl and Epic) I've finally found the motivation to rebuild my original Necromunda League terrain. Only one is the original shape, but the rest are built from the same card from years past. I did use additional bulkheads, but I have a LOT of them so it's actually cool to see them going to good use. Regardless of original or new design, they are all excellent additions to my terrain collection and I'm looking forward to subjecting it to the Skalk Bloodaxe treatment very soon. For now, it is functional for the new Necromunda games I'm playing. A bit bland, but all models start somewhere. These are further along than bare plastic and for that I am happy enough for now.
For those of you that read my Terrain Project thread, you'll notice that this is a slightly modified copy / paste of the same post. I did it ONLY because it's completely relevant to both threads and from here on out I'll likely only share completed pieces of terrain as my main focus here will be miniatures.
If anyone is interested in my Terrain Project thread, it's in my sig.
Enough self-promotion. On to the main platforms that my future battles will be fought upon:
(2 images because it is a large piece)
(original piece exactly as it was originally built in '96)
I'll end with a couple of my favorite perspective shots. Welcome to the Underhive.
Will have more to share soon. Thanks for looking.

Skalk, great thread. I played a game of Necromunda last week that was my first since 1994. My best mate, fortunately, loved it, so we'll be playing again soon, hopefully tomorrow.
I also have a fairly sizeable collection of models, though the vast majority of mine are Orlocks I bought to double up as Tyrant's Legion for my Badab Secessionists force. I have a vast pile of the old plastic bulkheads to use for making scenery, so I'll be plasticarding my way through the Easter holidays! It is likely that I will follow your example and do a Necromunda thread to detail my progress. I know you know dsteingass's old thread. That is another inspiration!

I started with necromunda back in the early 90's as my gateway into games workshop wargames (I was like 10 at the time) and have never looked back. It has been a while since I played a game of it but I still have the books (even upgraded to the new underhive book) and my orlock gang which come out to play every now and again with friends. Great thread btw, I will be interested to see more updates!

@ Fifty- Glad that you're getting back into Necromunda! It really is a timeless game, and for me was one of the gems of GW. As for terrain, dstein gave the final push to get my Terrain thread started. Also worth your while is the Necromunda thread by Bruticus. It is incredibly well done and hugely inspiring. Definately one of my favorite Necromunda modeling threads ever. As for your stuff, be sure to post a link to your thread here once you have it up and running. I really enjoy the 'community' part of Dakka. We're a pretty tight group here.
@ Dave- Yup. I am.
@ graven- oh man, you just wait. 40K terrain is taking a bit of a break and the Underhive is going to be exploding. I won't be displaying terrain here anymore (except finished projects) since I'll be posting all of that on my Terrain thread. My focus here is going to be miniatures.
@ rohansoldier- Man, that's cool! How did you get into GW? I'm always interested in sharing those stories, especially when it is Necromunda. I doubt GW will ever release a game I like better. It's above and beyond anything else from them I've played, though I'm a fan of almost everything released before 3rd Ed.
New update today. Not much going on, but wanted to show off my new gang and get the WIP part started.
Before I do that, I want to offer an open invitation to anyone that would like to share your gangs or terrain here. I know there are a lot of you out there and sharing your stuff is always a motivator for other people to dig out their old stuff as well.
Ok, on to the update.
As you know, the Delaque gang I was running gave up after only one (completely horrific and devastating) battle. That left me with the need of a new gang. After looking around I decided to contract the services of a new Van Saar gang in the area. Some of them looked a little worn out / used up, and some looked like they had never seen any action at all, but after a while they started to shape up and I'm looking forward to working with them.
Here they are in the rough (except a couple of extra weapons I'll detail in a moment, not sure why I didn't take an original pic. Oh well)
Now before anyone calls the Watchmen to have me run out of town for Heresy against a classic miniature, please know that the head was already missing when i got the model. Since he was already chopped up I removed the Chainsword to add the Bolter (from the original MK VII armored Space Marine set) so he could shoot further. And please note that I have a pristine copy of the same model just in case a Ganger develops awesome WS feats.
My Juves were also 'pre-chopped' so I decided to give them the same weapon twice. I know it doesn't matter game-wise, but for the fluff of the gang I thought it would reflect the Van Saar focus on technology and weaponry, and for regular gameplay it'll make it eaier to differentiate them on the table. The plastic Autopistol is from the new Cultist set (Dark Vengeance) and the plastic Laspistol is from the Rogue Trader IG set.
Standard Ganger and Heavy models that look like they never saw paint. That changed.
Another Ganger model that got chopped up before it came to me.
Converted Leader and Ganger. I wanted to use a WFB Empire head for the Leader but all my Empire stuff is packed in a closet and it's more toward the back / bottom. Not that interested anymore. So I used a Pig Iron Productions head instead and it works. I'll figure out the fluff for his inability to grow hair anymore later. Or if I get my hands on a Empire / Mordheim bearded head I'll try that instead. The Ganger is carrying a Lasgun from the old RT Imperial Guard set.
And here's the new gang with a bit of paint on them. I'm looking forward to the next game, hopefully this weekend.
That's it for this one. IRL is creeping back up on me again and it's affecting my hobby time but I'll sneak some modeling in here and there.
Thanks for looking!

Van Saar Juves stand a good chance of becoming Gun Fighters, so double pistols is perfectly valid. I modeled my Juve with 2 autopistols too - pretty good combo for a poor BS juve gunfighter under 8 inches.
I think it is fine to chop up those Van Saar models (personally I don't like them much anyway) - they are still available to buy on the GW website after all. Expendables! There are some decent conversions over on Yakro here: http://www.yakromunda.com/forums/index.php?topic=795.0
(Also 'the fluff why he is unable to grow hair anymore'? I think baldness still exists in the 41st millenium, just look at space marines).

Really excited to see wher you go with this. Trying to get back into necromunda, still have all my bulkheads(2 sets), but the card stock was ruined. Saw the link from Dave pointing where I can reprint the card stock. Also looking to scratch build some o my own. Have subscribed for more inspiration.

@ monkeytroll- Why thank you! More to come later, but they should probably belong on my Cultists thread... which reveals my ultimate goal in all of this- to cross over on so many of my threads that I can update them all at once with the same pictures and text.
@ Bruticus- It was intended more for humor. A Van Saar w/o a beard is like Goliath without huge muscles, a Cawdor without a hood, or an Escher without really big... uh... hair.
@ Theophony- It's slow going right now because almost all of my attention has been (surprise) doing terrain. But I have a bit done w/ my Van Saars and more is coming. Those bulkheads are so very cool. They are IMO one of the best things GW ever released. So incredibly versatile, durable to the end of time, and really well detailed. I have a lot of them and if I wind up where I want to go I'll eventually use all of them. Also, glad to see you are trying to get back into Necromunda. It's such a great game. I'll be really surprised (and wicked disappointed) if GW doesn't do a 20th anniversary release in '15.
@ Dreadclaw69- Most of it is from back in the day, but I was suffering from 'hobby ADD' and I wish I had focused more on collection Necromunda miniatures. But thanks to eBay I've caught up a bit.
Not a lot going on with miniatures lately. I've been REALLY busy w/ terrain. A stated before, I'm going to keep WIP on my Terrain Thread but I did finish this that I'll share:
It's not a 100% 'everything I've got' effort by any means, but it was fun and easy and looks decent enough to play on. I like the mix of bright / dark and the things that do not necessarily fit together in the same place. I also like that it has a hatch and a junk pile and crates... it could be anything.
I also picked up my last eBay score for a long, long time. I got a little stupid when I started getting back into this and I'm slamming on the brakes. I'm psyched to have these, but it has to stop.
Spyrers:
Ratskins:
Redemptionists:
The paint on the Redemptionists isn't bad so I may just do some cleanup work. The Ratskins have a decent start w/ basing but need a lot of love. The Spyrers need to be purged with Mr. Clean.
And finally, some actual work on my part. I've started to put some paint on my Van Saars. This one is almost done:
'Almost done???' you may ask. Yup. And here's my reasons.
(1)- real world examples:
(2) Homage to an old friend of mine that used to play Van Saars and had them painted very similarly.
I'll do a bit more here and there but for the most part they are going to look like a modern tactical unit.
Oh yeah- Wednesday nights are Necromunda nights! Starting this Wednesday we're going to try to get in a game once a week.
That's it for this one. I'll have more later.
